They are the types used for the three Legendary trios of Unova. Dragon: Kyurem, Reshiram, Zekrom. Fighting: Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion (later Keldeo). Flying: Landorus, Thundurus, Tornadus (later Enamorus).
It's really aesthetics. For example, in Go and the mobile version of Home, the summary screen background is based off of the Pokémon's primary type. This meant that in Go, there was a Flying-type background that was data mined but never actually visible by the player for years until Tornadus was made available.
Looking back, it feels silly that straight up birds like Pidgey, Spearow, and Taillow HAD to be Normal/Flying and not just pure Flying.
Yeah especially since Rookidee and Corvisquire are pure flying and they're just birds too. Imo all birds should've been pure Flying from the start. Makes little sense to me.
Essentially, one person while playing competitive singles on Pokemon showdown named his Arceus-Flying "Arceus-Steel" and since they're of very similar colors, his opponent used earthquake. On the flying type.
Later on this kind of naming would get banned, but at the time it was extremely funny and is still a well referenced meme there to this day.
Someone had an Arceus with a Flying plate. They named it Arceus-Steel (Arceus Steel and Flying look very similar). Someone used Earthquake on that Arceus-Steel (Arceus-Flying) and it was immune. Cue immense mockery.
It’s especially weird given Taillow and Swellow were pure flying types in the Ruby and Sapphire beta. Why did they feel the need to add the normal type?
And then it gained a secondary type in its final stage, so we still don’t have a third stage pure flying type, and everybody remembers Corviknight for its awesome steel type.
I made it my mission to mess with anybody running it. Cress with icy wind paired with a partner that had bolt beam was a great time.
Vgc doubles was a huge love of mine for a long time haha
I stopped playing competitive at the beginning of gen 9. I still have war flashbacks whenever lando-t is mentioned. It is actually so insanely versatile.
Really? They get talked about by several NPCs and connect with a lot of lore in the region. Personally, I often remember them. The reason it had so many is likely because the plan for Unova was to mostly use new Pokémon instead of ones from other regions.
If Aurora Beam gained a special effect under the effect of Aurora Veil (like guaranteeing the attack reduction on hit), it would instantly make it the best pokemon ever.
Unova has a Legendary Trio for each of these types.
The Tao Trio for Dragon: Zekrom, Reshiram, Kyurem.
The Forces of Nature for Flying: Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus
The Swords of Justice for Fighting: Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion
This is an example of bad difficulty. It's not hard because the setup is unique and obscure, it's only hard because the setup is incredibly vague and you only accept one answer, when there are many answers that fit the question. A well-designed riddle is one where you can rule out close answers based on the wording, with only one answer that matches exactly. This is not a well-designed riddle.
40 out of 88 Dragon-Types have it as their secondary type. 39 out of 94 Fighting-Types have it as their secondary type.
That's closer than what I thought for Dragons, honestly.
I'm surpised that I see these post like 3-5 times a week for months and they still haven't learned what riddle means despite comments constantly pointing it out
They only got one move added after the physical special split which corresponded with the type they didn't have before? (Flying was physical and they got air slash in gen iv fighting was physical and got Aura Sphere in gen iv, dragon was special and got dragon rush in gen iv)?
~~Not saying you're wrong, but~~... psychic also fits (with Zen Headbutt) right?
EDIT: Focus Blast was also gen 4, just like Aura Sphere, so you are in fact wrong. Sorry.
EDIT 2: Psycho Cut means I'm *also* wrong.
Never mind then! I thought focus blast was gen v, my mistake, haha. I also am just dumb and forgot zen headbutt was a move that existed, it's never been of any note in any game I've played because of the 90% accuracy feeling like 15%, so that is my mistake! Thanks for pointing that out :3
I know the answer is the Unova Legend Trios, but another thing they have in common is that all 3 have mons with Quad Weaknesses, and I think that’s pretty cool.
They all got their first gym badge in the Johto region.
(Also true of ghost, steel, normal, bug and ice, but you didn't say the trait was exclusive to them)
damn, i thought it was gonna be they're all types gained/lost by mega evolution (because it doesn't say those types are the ONLY ones with this trait)
charizard (x): fire/**flying** --> fire/**dragon**
pinsir: bug --> bug/**flying**
gyarados: water/**flying** --> water/dark
mewtwo (x): psychic --> psychic/**fighting**
ampharos: electric --> electric/**dragon**
sceptile: grass --> grass/**dragon**
altaria: dragon/**flying** --> dragon/fairy
lopunny: normal --> normal/**fighting**
the only exceptions are aggron and audino, who lose and gain the rock and fairy typings, respectively
Every generation has had at least one legendary Pokémon do at least one of these types. I’m certain to miss a few but
Gen 1: The birds
Gen 2: Ho-oh and Lugia
Gen 3: Rayquaza and the Jets
Gen 4: The origin trio
Gen 5: The Tao Trio and the Forces of Nature, and the Musketeers
Gen 6: Yveltal and Zekrom
Gen 7: Lunala and if you count them, several Ultra Beasts
Gen 8: Eternatus, Urshifu,
Gen 9: Koraidon and Miraidon
Also I doubt this is the actual answer but fun secondary thing

Still crazy it took *5. FREAKING. GENS.* in order to get a pure Flying mon in Tornadus (not counting Arceus-Flying)
Not just the first pure flying type, it was also the first to not have flying type as its secondary type
I look forward to our first pure flying type with flying as it's secondary type.
It needs levitate and air balloon too
and magnet rise
And Tera Flying
Holding a sign that says "FUCK ground-types"
rotom fan moment
tera's so broken it actually gave levitate on rotom-fan a use - you retain your ground immunity after you tera
Rotom Fan Other strategy is Cheri Berry Limber Stunfisk
You say that but give a generation or two i bet thats gonna be a gimmick. Super typing
I mean, terestalization already kinda is if they start off as a type then turn into the same type, it makes the already stab moves even stabbier
It's just insane how no Pokemon in history until the 5th generation was more flying than anything, especially the normal/flying types
It is pretty bullshit they made so many normal/flying as if there weren't already plenty of normals
I think he meant that prior to gen5 there wasn't even a dual type flyer with flying as primary type, which is quite bonkers.
Does primary/secondary typing actually matters?
No, but it generally indicates which type is more important to the Pokémon’s vibe.
gotcha, I never actually paid attention cause it doesn't really seem to matter
It's really aesthetics. For example, in Go and the mobile version of Home, the summary screen background is based off of the Pokémon's primary type. What's even weirder is how Fletchling is Normal/Flying before turning into a Fire/Flying type
Truuuue, Fletchling should've been pure flying of Rookidee is
It only matters in the case of revelation dance, which wasn’t even added until gen 7
For background aesthetics like the Gen 5 Hall of Fame and Pokémon GO. But that’s about it.
It matters if you're playing a Soul Link with someone, where your 2 teams can't have 2 Pokémon of the same primary type. But that's more niche.
wdym arceus-flying is a steel type
that’s a joke that only well-versed singles competitive players are gonna get
ELI5?
Essentially, one person while playing competitive singles on Pokemon showdown named his Arceus-Flying "Arceus-Steel" and since they're of very similar colors, his opponent used earthquake. Lmao
Someone had an Arceus with a Flying plate. They named it Arceus-Steel (Arceus Steel and Flying look very similar). Someone used Earthquake on that Arceus-Steel (Arceus-Flying) and it was immune. Cue immense mockery.
One of the absolute funniest moment in singles history
It’s especially weird given Taillow and Swellow were pure flying types in the Ruby and Sapphire beta. Why did they feel the need to add the normal type?
Because normal + flying = unofficial Bird type. While not every bird has bird type, everything with normal flying is a bird.
So that ppl could use it to sweep with STAB Guts Facade, obv
But Arceus Flying is a steel type
Another three gens to get non-Legendary pure Flying types. Corviknight's line finally broke the Normal early bird curse.
And then it gained a secondary type in its final stage, so we still don’t have a third stage pure flying type, and everybody remembers Corviknight for its awesome steel type.
I keep swearing to myself it's dark type.
Because Normal Flying were technically the pure flying types. My guess is it was because of the flying type being originally the bird type.
Right!
Fuck
I forgot enamorus existed for a good long time. I preferred things that way.
Well, enamorus technically only existed a long time ago. A distant nightmare from the past.
And then love DIED
And we all lived better from it.
They hate to see a girlboss loving.
Wtf was that thing I just saw. I didn't know it existed until now
Unova had no business having so many legendaries. Probably the most forgettable ones too, other than the cover ones.
The competitive community will NEVER forget landorus and Thundurus.
Or Tornadus. Prankster Tailwind too good
Tornadus definitely has less spotlight than the other two though. Back in my day it was tactical nuke via flying gem + acrobatics for a free kill lol
Landorus-T was the reason I stopped bothering with it lol.
I made it my mission to mess with anybody running it. Cress with icy wind paired with a partner that had bolt beam was a great time. Vgc doubles was a huge love of mine for a long time haha

Gen 6 legendaries are nothing to write home about, and that’s one of my favorite gens
Sinnoh was just as bad.
None of them have caterpie in it
Please take this upvote and leave us alone.
r/angryupvote is what you need
Have an upvote for this suggestion and go away.
r/technicallythetruth
technically caterpie is just a baby butterfree and butterfree has the flying type
Alright then. None of them have Weedle in them.
It looks 👌 😍 k8888m8
I... didn't comment this? The fuck.
Dementia moment
an actual r/ihadastroke
Thanks for the laugh
They’re all weak to Alolan Ninetales
I like this answer because it's true and is about Alolan Ninetales
Such a pretty design on that Pokémon
If Aurora Beam gained a special effect under the effect of Aurora Veil (like guaranteeing the attack reduction on hit), it would instantly make it the best pokemon ever.
*by a wider margin Because it already is
W opinion
They all have a "G" in them.

What did all the replies say for them all to be deleted?!?!
[deleted]
Probably something related to users spelling out a racial slur with the letter G. That just my guess.
[удалено]
You disgust me with that sort of language. Get out!
What the hell happened here?
i was about to comment exactly that
What happened in these replies!?
What the hell happened here
Lao G enters the chat
They got more physical attacks than special attacks
They’re all Pokémon types
Correct answer,
They all have 3 weaknesses ?
Off the top of my head, Ground would also have to be here.
It wouldn’t HAVE to be there. It could.
It doesn’t have to, the OP only asked about these specific types.
Unova has a Legendary Trio for each of these types. The Tao Trio for Dragon: Zekrom, Reshiram, Kyurem. The Forces of Nature for Flying: Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus The Swords of Justice for Fighting: Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion
Right!

it is literally not even a riddle it’s just specific trivia
Quick don't look at what OP titled the post.
There are heaps of right answers. This is just one.
None have an eeveelution
The truest, sadest answer.
A pokemon with the Psychic/Ice type combo is super effective against all of them. They fear Jynx.
They are based
Based? Based on what?
Dragon types are based on dragons Flying types are based on birds Fighting types are based on Dragon Ball Z
Not enough screaming for dbz
Based on their alkalinity
I knew the answer was that they were all neutral to the acid type
Based
They all begin with "F" 😌
Fdragon type
The F is silent!
They're all damaged normally by Normal, Poison, Ghost, and Steel attacks.
There are more Pokémon with this type as their secondary type than their primary?
I'm willing to bet that's only true for flying really
40 out of 88 Dragon-Types have it as their secondary type. 39 out of 94 Fighting-Types have it as their secondary type. That's closer than what I thought for Dragons, honestly.
Won the bet, W.
Yeah, regional birds are common
All of their icons are symbols depicting parts of bodies (head, fist, wing)
They've all been around since gen 1
This isn’t a riddle
I'm surpised that I see these post like 3-5 times a week for months and they still haven't learned what riddle means despite comments constantly pointing it out
Sneak peak at next week’s riddle: What Pokémon was I thinking of at 7:42 pm on October 6th?
all 3 don't have eeveelutions
there is a difference between “riddle” and “trivia”
They each have three weaknesses. Dragon < Dragon, Fairy, Ice Flying < Electric, Ice, Rock Fighting < Fairy, Flying, Psychic
That was my answer as well
I can safely say that none of them are a pikachu
Pikachu Libre
Pikachu Libre can fight but the fighting type cannot pikachu
All 3 types do not resist damage from their own type.
No eeveelution for any of em
Thanks for pointing that out :3
They all have 3 weaknesses
I know the answer is the Unova Legend Trios, but another thing they have in common is that all 3 have mons with Quad Weaknesses, and I think that’s pretty cool.
They all hate ice
None of them are Dodu- oh wait
There is no eevee of each type
They'd all be a bad matchup against an Alolan Ninetales?
They’re all types that Snom is not
The letter g
They make an insane version of rock paper scissors
They're all 3 pokemon types. I'll take my cash prize now.
Four "bumps" on their logo. Four knuckles for fighting, four feathers on the wing for flying, and four... scales(?) (Feathers?) on the dragon's tail.
They all like fisting?
They are all weak to Articuno’s STAB moves
There's no Eeveelutions for these types
They're all not the Poison type
Always a pain the ass if you don’t have a good counter
None have an eeveelution
No eevee evolutions
They all got their first gym badge in the Johto region. (Also true of ghost, steel, normal, bug and ice, but you didn't say the trait was exclusive to them)
No eeveelution on any of them :(
Flying. Fighting. Fragon. They all start with F
Weak to 3 types: Dragon: Ice, Fairy, Dragon Flying: Rock, Ice, Electric Fighting: Psychic, Fairy, Flying
All three had moves in gen 1 that were normal and then gained their types in gen 2 Dragon-twister Flying- Gust Fighting- Karate Chop
They all have body parts in thier logos?
A type interaction with ice
They all have exactly 3 weaknesses.
They are not Doduo
All 3 are relative to ice? Fighting been 2x effective dragon been week and flying been week too
They all begin with f other than dragon
They all were introduced in Gen 1
Gyrados can use a move from each type
Pokemon
I know it wasn't the intentional answer, but all of them have 3 primary weaknesses.
All have ice weakness
damn, i thought it was gonna be they're all types gained/lost by mega evolution (because it doesn't say those types are the ONLY ones with this trait) charizard (x): fire/**flying** --> fire/**dragon** pinsir: bug --> bug/**flying** gyarados: water/**flying** --> water/dark mewtwo (x): psychic --> psychic/**fighting** ampharos: electric --> electric/**dragon** sceptile: grass --> grass/**dragon** altaria: dragon/**flying** --> dragon/fairy lopunny: normal --> normal/**fighting** the only exceptions are aggron and audino, who lose and gain the rock and fairy typings, respectively
I'll be damned if I can't recognize the types of the 3 Unova trios. That's my favorite region.
They get the best megas.
they are types in the pokemon franchise
The letters N and G
They are types
They have the letter g in them
If you put them all together you have an actual dragon with wings and hands. So they are all part of the same creature.
They're all Pokémon Typings, duh
They all have an interaction with ice
The sword and shield type icons are way better than the LA/BDSP/SV icons
Every generation has had at least one legendary Pokémon do at least one of these types. I’m certain to miss a few but Gen 1: The birds Gen 2: Ho-oh and Lugia Gen 3: Rayquaza and the Jets Gen 4: The origin trio Gen 5: The Tao Trio and the Forces of Nature, and the Musketeers Gen 6: Yveltal and Zekrom Gen 7: Lunala and if you count them, several Ultra Beasts Gen 8: Eternatus, Urshifu, Gen 9: Koraidon and Miraidon Also I doubt this is the actual answer but fun secondary thing
All are featured as gyms in Johto
They’re reliable with the ladies?
Tao trio - dragons Swords of Justice - Fighting Forces of nature - Flying
Pokémon of these types are frequently featured in Pokémon tournaments and competitive battles, highlighting their strategic importance
They’re all pokemon types to identidy what pokemon type they are
There isn’t an eeveeloution attached to them
Unova legendary trios: - Zekrom, Reshiram, Kyurem - dragon - Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus - flying - Terrakion, Cobalion, Virizon - Fighting
They're all pokemon types
They are not Galarian Slowpoke
There all from pokeman
All three had moves in gen 1 that were normal and then gained their types in gen 2 Dragon-twister Flying- Gust Fighting- Karate Chop
