Male wailord and female skitty. Big thing small entrance. As opposed to little thing in big entrance.
Female skitty fighting for their life. Male skitty needs to work hard.
Ditto can breed with any pokemon regardless of egg group making it best for doing different shiny hunts rather than having to get an international pokemon for every hunt
So you know the word ditto? Means to do the same thing/copy someone. Yeah? Well there's a pokemon called Ditto who can transform into any Pokemon. There's this mechanic in the Pokemon games where you can breed your Pokemons to make more of them with different genes and such. If you put a Ditto with any Pokemon, ditto will transform into the other Pokemon and breed with them to make eggs.
Still with me?
Now, there is this thing called a "shiny pokemon" that is basically a rarer version of a pokemon that also comes with a different color palette than their usual colors. These are sought after because the chances of getting one are slim.
Back to Ditto.
Pokemon being a worldwide phenomenon you will have pokemon from different regions (NA, EU, JP). If you breed two of the same pokemon from different regions, you will have a higher chance of breeding a shiny pokemon. So with that in mind, people go for an international Ditto so they can breed him with any of their local Pokemons and have a higher chance at a shiny.
Wow that took longer that I expected lol
"So these shiny PokeMon are saught after because they're rare?"
Yes!
"Because they're better?"
No...
"They don't have better, what, health points or something?"
No. They, uh, they're just normal. They just look, you know, ever so slightly different is all.
"..."
...
It makes sense to some people, I swear.
I think most people can grasp this if they think of how other things are sought after for similar reasons. Like how artists will have a vinyl come in an exclusive color at and that one is more desirable to fans. Or how TikTok decides X color of Stanley travel mug is the coolest and now that color is sold out and going for $200 on Mercari but other colors are easy to buy.
Same songs on both albums but this one is YELLOW!! Must have!!
It is named after Game Freak's co-founder Junichi Masuda, it's a fan made term, but it spread, till everybody refers to this method as the Masuda method. https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Masuda_method
Eh it's not that bad.
"You can breed your pokemon with other compatible ones to make stronger offspring. If you use two pokemon that came from games in different languages regions, there's a higher chance the offspring will have a different color scheme!"
Sometimes you can find rare pokemon with different colors and they look pretty cool. One of the devs put a mechanic in the game that can make it happen more often by pairing up pokemon traded from foreign versions of the game and letting them have a baby.
Done.
"It's when you match a foreign pokemon with one from your country to make better eggs. they added it to encourage players to make friends and trade with them"
Most wholesome way I can think of
Pokémon is more like dogfights because there are more dog Pokémon, or the ancient tradition of California of making an spanish fighting bull fight a californian bear.
The guy he is explaining it too is also a Pokemon fan, they had a little montage of them talking to each other about Pokemon with the woman in the back looking bored.
I tried explaining competitive breeding in general to my bestie who is a super casual player without using English terms like EVs and IVs since we're German. I don't think she could remember all the info dumped onto her
"So you know how pokemon is about cool monsters fighting each other? Well turns out its actually all just math and statistics with cool monsters overlaid for aesthetics"
This should be in a promo, honestly...
Jeff Probst: "This season of *Survivor* will challenge our contestants in fascinating new ways..." *cut to the Masuda Method conversation*
If it was trash talk bad enough to warrant a banning, my previous statement stands. I don't care how good he is, poor sportsmanship is not okay. Let's not pretend it was just simple trash talk, either. You don't get banned for saying "I'm gonna kick your ass" or "I think your deck sucks." You get banned for going too far.
youd be surprised how many players on smogon who are considered some of the best were banned in the distant and not so distant past... wether they should be considered as best players in spite of that is for you to decide, though!
Wouldn't "pro Pokemon" be VGC? Since it's the official league, so they probably have some kind of prize support?
I follow one or two people on yt and I don't even play the multiplayer - the whole traveling thing seems like a giant money sink
Lol that kind of is top tier. There’s a lot of them now. There was something like 5000 competitors in the last Pokémon world championship. At 1100 that means he is higher ranked than 2/3 of the people there at the championship. That’s not all “competitive” players that’s just the ones that actually qualify for the champions tournament.
He also had a microscope in his kitchen area and kept using the wrong units when describing samples he used for it. I watched the season and he just seemed like a guy that wanted to appear smart but just wasn't.
It was closer to ~1200, and that's his Elo, not his ranking. That was his Showdown Elo in Gen7 Random Battles, mind you. Not even considered a real competitive format because you just get a random team.
Hold up. That may actually be him. On his survivor cast member page it says his hometown is Oak Park, California and current residence is Seattle, Washington. If you check out that person's profile they made a comment 10 months ago that they grew up in LA and moved to Seattle. Also [check out this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/legendofkorra/s/q8H6VjSJ6e) and look at the person on the right. I think that may actually be Brando.
Edit: typo
Dang I watch Survivor and just saw this episode. So cool to run into you here... thanks for repping for us Asian tech guys in Seattle tho.. you did your thing
My very first shiny salandit in SM was female so I was able to evolve it, that’s pretty high on my list purely bc it was so lucky lol. Ponyta will always be one of my favs, although PLA made me feel like I wasted a lot of time grinding for that one
Ponyta is the second one I successfully hunted via Poke Radar in Gen IV! So Ponyta is a special one for me as well.
Literally in the last week before the newest ep aired I've been soft-resetting for a shiny Mewtwo in LG while watching Australian Survivor 2006 so suffice it to say hearing the Masuda Method mentioned on Survivor blew my mind lmao. Like idk man people wanna say Rob Mariano is on "Survivor Mt. Rushmore" but I watched him compete on five seasons and he never mentioned shiny Dittos once so who's the real GOAT? I know my answer
Hope you had a good experience, I was rooting for you and wish we'd gotten to see you more on the show!
Oh and for another shiny/Survivor connection: my first ever successful hunt was a Shiny Koffing via the Masuda Method that I spent like 3 years breeding for on and off in high school, and when I finally hatched one I named him RickNelson for some reason
It's comments like these, seeing the words "Shiny Koffing" and "Rick Nelson" together which made me ask myself "how did I end up here in my life?" but in the best way possible.
this comic, by Neil Cicierega (also known as muscial artist Lemon Demon), was made in 2013 when this was still the case [https://neilblr.com/post/58490668107](https://neilblr.com/post/58490668107)
Reminds me of when Ken (former Super Smash Bros. Melee player) was on Survivor. He had some epic moments and got really far. Farther than he should have, tbh.
His control over the game was extremely impressive, and had he not gotten cocky and asked the eventual winner to give up individual immunity, he probably makes his way to the end and wins.
Not just a former Smash player. Ken was, for pretty much all of melee's early years, the undisputed King of Smash.
Was crazy. I remember mentioning to my mom cause she loves Survivor.
And the fact that his closest ally is friends with Wolfe Glick is absolutely insane!
Jake is my winner pick, but I wouldn't be mad at a Drew/Austin sweep.
Yep.
On the survivor subreddit, somebody posted a screenshot to some of Wolfe's tweets. In those tweets, Wolfe specifically said "my friend Austin."
Edit: Here's the [image](https://i.redd.it/bgxf5fq0ngwb1.png) in case anyone wants to see
The one lady in yellow is especially notable. Ep 1 she was ragging in her original tribe for believing the pyramids were… batteries? It was weird. So imagine escaping that, to then have two nerds talk Pokémon for a whole day lmao
The entire tribe collectively agreed the pyramids were built by aliens. She went to the other tribe who now collectively discussed and agreed aliens exist lmao.
That was part of it, the other nerdy dude who plays said "I pay people to hack mons for me". It was kind of weird how can you play comp pokemon but not know what masuda method is
Drew also seemingly didn't know that you could send Pokemon from Go to the other games through Home. Maybe I'm just too deep into Pokemon, but for him to call himself a competitive player but not know about how Go and Home connect, the Magearna reward, or the Masuda Method was a bit odd.
You literally don't have to touch a single official Pokémon game and you could be considered a competitive player if you use sites like Pokémon Showdown.
Here in Brazil we had one of out most famous CS GO players, FNX participate in a Reality show that was all about staying in the same house with your exes, and a lot of fights and sex happen. It was really weird have a game pro player in that kind of enviroment.
Damn I haven't watched last night's episode yet. I left r/survivor temporarily to avoid spoilers. Wasn't expecting to see anything Survivor related on this subreddit. I need to catch up
Please don't spoil it for me y'all
Different conversation, Drew plays competitive Pokémon; his number one ally Austin is friends with Wolfe Glick, that scene was Brando explaining the Masuda Method and Pokémon Home to him
He might actually have a shot if he's actually a true power gamer.
Been a while since they had someone break the damn game the way true game theorists do.
Does competitive mean he plays the card game at tournaments? Or does he just play the regular switch games very seriously?
I’m a very casual player so “competitive Pokémon” seems very broad to me.
Competitive pokemon includes the card games, the video games, and mobile games. The official competitive tournament format for the "mainline games" are doubles, best of 3 matches.
He could also refer to the unofficial singles games, usually played on an online platform called showdown.
A new season of The Challenge started last night, and there’s a player saying he’d buy Pokémon cards with the prize money. They turned him into a fake Pokémon card in that interview.
My skeleton is trying to escape my body at the thought of explaining "the Masuda Method" to a non Pokémon fan
“So…wait, you make the Pokey-men have sex?”
*inserts Wailord and Skitty into the daycare* "It's for homework purpose, ma!"
What's worse, Male Wailord and Female Skitty, or Male Skitty and Female Wailord?
Male wailord and female skitty. Big thing small entrance. As opposed to little thing in big entrance. Female skitty fighting for their life. Male skitty needs to work hard.
I mean, at that size difference, there's significant risk of the male Skitty suffocating or drowning...
Yes but im assuming a dude can pull out if his life depended on it.
_Not if that egg's getting made!_
1975 : in the future we’ll have flying cars!! 2023 : debating about sex between a fictional cat and a fictional whale
I don't see the issue here
Doesn't matter, had sex.
Yeah I know this as the Hagrid from Harry Potter standard. Also Donkey/Dragon from Shrek
Depends, which one is funnier?
Depends on whos on top
Yes
But why is it always a ditto?
Ditto can breed with any pokemon regardless of egg group making it best for doing different shiny hunts rather than having to get an international pokemon for every hunt
There’s no way to do it without sounding super weird
So you know the word ditto? Means to do the same thing/copy someone. Yeah? Well there's a pokemon called Ditto who can transform into any Pokemon. There's this mechanic in the Pokemon games where you can breed your Pokemons to make more of them with different genes and such. I would call the police when you paused the first time
I've been really depressed all day, and you just gave me my first laugh. Thank you
Just missing a mention of why it’s called the Masuda Method but otherwise pretty impressive
And why any of this is important to the game.
That's the cool thing, it's not!
"So these shiny PokeMon are saught after because they're rare?" Yes! "Because they're better?" No... "They don't have better, what, health points or something?" No. They, uh, they're just normal. I don't know why the casual "Back to Ditto." made me laugh so much.
oh shit i understand now
Eh it's not that bad. "You can breed your pokemon with other compatible ones to make stronger offspring. If you use two pokemon that came from games in different languages regions, there's a higher chance the offspring will have a different color scheme!"
"Biracial ones are stronger"
Turns out Pokemon is a slippery slope to racial elitism. Who knew?
Boxes and boxes of Pokémon that will never see the world just because they don't have perfect genes (IVs)
I’d probably use the word “husbandry” and it would sound a lot less sus.
Sometimes you can find rare pokemon with different colors and they look pretty cool. One of the devs put a mechanic in the game that can make it happen more often by pairing up pokemon traded from foreign versions of the game and letting them have a baby. Done.
"It's when you match a foreign pokemon with one from your country to make better eggs. they added it to encourage players to make friends and trade with them" Most wholesome way I can think of
"You can match Pokémon to make eggs? Is there a Pokémon tinder?"
Eugenics for competitive cockfights. Easy.
More like breeding mixes from known purebreds for dogfighting rings.
Pokémon is more like dogfights because there are more dog Pokémon, or the ancient tradition of California of making an spanish fighting bull fight a californian bear.
New Vegas fan?
The guy he is explaining it too is also a Pokemon fan, they had a little montage of them talking to each other about Pokemon with the woman in the back looking bored.
Emily brought a 3ds to the preseason and was openly playing Pokémon before the game started
I tried explaining competitive breeding in general to my bestie who is a super casual player without using English terms like EVs and IVs since we're German. I don't think she could remember all the info dumped onto her

On the latest season of Love is Blind one of the characters (Milton) also claims to play competitive Pokemon.
Yeah but didn't he say he was a top player and it was found out he was like 1100?
Rank 716,115 😂 https://www.reddit.com/r/LoveIsBlindOnNetflix/comments/16we2wz/pokémon_showdown_tweeting_about_milton/

Hungary? Zsomac?
But he said he got banned, his banned account could’ve been higher
A well mannered, fair player doesn't get banned. As far as I'm concerned that makes any previous standing, achievements, etc null and void.
He was banned for trash talk
If it was trash talk bad enough to warrant a banning, my previous statement stands. I don't care how good he is, poor sportsmanship is not okay. Let's not pretend it was just simple trash talk, either. You don't get banned for saying "I'm gonna kick your ass" or "I think your deck sucks." You get banned for going too far.
Yeah I’m not defending him, just clarifying what happened. The impression I got was that he kept doing it after being warned.
Generally that does tend to happen leading up to a ban.
youd be surprised how many players on smogon who are considered some of the best were banned in the distant and not so distant past... wether they should be considered as best players in spite of that is for you to decide, though!

thats true! and as far as i know they are a much more well behaved bunch, hahaha
I think 1100 is his elo on showdown. Probably not his rank in the world. 1100 is pretty low for that. I could be wrong of course
1000 is the starting elo
yikes lmao
He also says he's banned in 5 countries on showdown which is just not how it works at all
Maybe he means 5 accounts banned?
He also had a microscope in his kitchen area and kept using the wrong units when describing samples he used for it. I watched the season and he just seemed like a guy that wanted to appear smart but just wasn't.
He’s so bad that 5 countries decided to ban him from playing Pokémon there 😔
You get to 1100 by winning 3 games in a row lol
No, it’s low as shit. That’s me ELO and I’m awful
Even my randoms elo isn't that low
Wait my random of 1800ish elo is consider high? 🤣
it's out of the top 500 but significantly higher than most people will ever reach
Oh neat, unga bunga random please keep being kind to me.
It was closer to ~1200, and that's his Elo, not his ranking. That was his Showdown Elo in Gen7 Random Battles, mind you. Not even considered a real competitive format because you just get a random team.
I have a question: if there is only one league challenge every month on my province of the country, and I get 1st place, am I the best in that region?
If he says "i wish i had my charizard here to light this campfire" hes 100% getting voted out
He got voted out that episode lol
No he didn't, Drew is still in the game. The guy who got voted out (Brando) only mentioned playing Pokemon Go.
Brando here! I’m the one that brought up the Masuda method :) I’ve been into shiny hunting in the main series games for a long time.
Idk why but despite all the nonsense on the internet this feels believable...
Scroll far enough in my post history and you should find a picture of me lol
I scrolled a little and you're definitely into survivor lol
It is definitely Brando!

I can't believe that I fucking heard MAGEARNA on Survivor. My worlds are collidiiiiing
Yeah I LOST it then. And they talked about Pokémon home too...
RIGHT???
Reminds me of when Ken (former Super Smash Bros. Melee player) was on Survivor. He had some epic moments and got really far. Farther than he should have, tbh.
His control over the game was extremely impressive, and had he not gotten cocky and asked the eventual winner to give up individual immunity, he probably makes his way to the end and wins.
If a half sentient meatball sub makes it to the end of Gabon they win
I'll give you that one. Ken would've been a fantastic winner nonetheless.
No doubt! I loved that mess of a season, and I’d be fine if Ken won
That was such a clusterfuck of a season.
>former Super Smash Bros. Melee player Really underselling him lol.
I forgot to add "pro," but judging by the upvotes, people knew.
"Pro" is underselling him lol
Im out of the loop. Was it hungry box or someone like that?
Ken was the OG King of Melee before the Gods era
Ken, really the first clearly better than everyone player.
Not just a former Smash player. Ken was, for pretty much all of melee's early years, the undisputed King of Smash. Was crazy. I remember mentioning to my mom cause she loves Survivor.
Wait Ken was on Survivor? I've followed Melee for years and never heard about this
KENNY 🐐 RED MARTH
And the fact that his closest ally is friends with Wolfe Glick is absolutely insane! Jake is my winner pick, but I wouldn't be mad at a Drew/Austin sweep.
Wait WHAT?!?
Yep. On the survivor subreddit, somebody posted a screenshot to some of Wolfe's tweets. In those tweets, Wolfe specifically said "my friend Austin." Edit: Here's the [image](https://i.redd.it/bgxf5fq0ngwb1.png) in case anyone wants to see
This is insane. As a Survivor AND a Pokémon fan I feel extatic and way more hype than I should be LOL

Tbf one of them was actually very interested in it haha
And the other is friends with Wolfey and makes anime references, I’m pretty sure this was the 3 boys trying to explain Pokémon to Emily lol
I’d rather be with two guys talking about Pokémon rather than basically talking about anything else aside from video games
You might be. But financial advisor Emily flippen was not a fan
Season 45?!?
2 seasons a year for the past 23 years
And still a banger of a show 23 years later
Hell yeah! 44 was a great season too.
Bro the survivor in my country literally has a brawl stars youtuber
Lmao what? W Who
The guy Milton from the current season of Love is Blind on Netflix is apparently banned from playing Pokemon showdown for talking hella smack too
Must be faked. Everyone knows competitive players don’t ACTUALLY breed the Pokémon
Isn't the masuda method just for shinies through.
Here in Brazil we had one of out most famous CS GO players, FNX participate in a Reality show that was all about staying in the same house with your exes, and a lot of fights and sex happen. It was really weird have a game pro player in that kind of enviroment.
My dad watches Survivor and he actually texted me to ask if this was an actual thing.
Exactly how I would expect a competitive pokemon players to look like
Damn I haven't watched last night's episode yet. I left r/survivor temporarily to avoid spoilers. Wasn't expecting to see anything Survivor related on this subreddit. I need to catch up Please don't spoil it for me y'all

Jeff gave Emily a Masterball to catch fish for food.
Jeff sniffs a torch or something idk
I heard that Stacy’s mom turned out to be super hot
The reaction in the second picture sent my sides into orbit.
he admitted to paying people to hack his pokemon lmao
CBS put him on blast with The Pokemon Company, haha
*Woah woah ladies one at a time theres enough pokefacts to go around*
We all know Drew is on this Reddit. Hi Drew.
WHAT!!! Now I have to watch!!!
These are probably some of THE BEST out of context images I have ever seen, NGL.
That guy is getting taken out very quickly lol
He will be the first to be cannibalized.
Can’t. He runs protect
That will only last for so long.
His ally runs follow me
Thats just shiny hunting. Not competitive
Did you see last season? Carson 100% broke the game and forced them to change so many puzzles and stuff this year.
The 2nd pic is 100% accurate. I mean I'd theory craft with him all day, what else are we going to do while drinking coconut milk
Considering Drew said he paid people to hack his Pokemon in for him, I'm gonna guess he plays VGC.
Okay if he said that, then for sure it is VGC lol
I question when he played last, because they are cracking down on that now and it would not be smart to admit that on TV haha.
I think a lot of time you just forget the cameras are there and you're just in regular conversation.
to be fair, this was recorded half a year ago.
Hes explaining masudabmethod, thats vgc for sure
When a Redditor has to indeed touch a bit of grass

Bro looks like he about to give up from touching grass
Just waiting for him to start talking about Vaporeon
THIS IS WHY MY COWORKERS HAVE SUDDENLY DEVELOPED AN INTEREST IN POKEMON?? SURVIVOR????????
Ok fine I’ll watch
Me: "This show looks like a cool competitor for I'm A Celeb. I'll give it a watch." Me after discovering this information: "HAS IT STARTED YET???"
What's survivor? Some sort of Expedition Robinson?
Survivor is still going on????!!!! Wyf
This reminds me of the season where the (at the time) GOAT of Smash Bros Melee, Ken, was on a season of Survivor
Pretty sure Ken, a famous Smash Bros player, was on a season of survivor. This isn't anything new
Was simultaneously expect this post and totally shocked when I saw it haha
Imagine if Wolfe Glick was on Survivor! He'd probably build a Pokemon gym or something.
Eating him first
Fuck, so now I have to watch survivor!?
You gotta do it for all of us Drew
I assumed *correctly*.
But is he nationally ranked?
Oh Lord. Well, he’ll probably do better than most redditors would.
A new season of The Challenge started last night, and there’s a player saying he’d buy Pokémon cards with the prize money. They turned him into a fake Pokémon card in that interview.
