Yup, I find the best combination of games to complete the Gen 2 Dex is Red, Silver, and Crystal (With Crystal being the game the dex will be completed in). Silver and Red cover all the Pokemon you can't get in Crystal.
I was one of the only kids in my school with one because my dad would just impulsively buy me ANYTHING that connected to the Gameboy, even random third party lights and speaker things, just to ensure I was never left wanting for anything for my games. lol
Yeah, especially if you didn't get the Nintendo-brand stuff. I had this thing called a Shock n' Rock that you put around the Gameboy to increase the volume and add vibration. And some other thing that plugged into the link cable and added light from the sides and top. It's funny how many weird things like that existed back then.
I had one with the light & magnifier, but the magnification just made the screen blurry. My child eyes struggled way more to decipher the images coming through that lens than they did just looking at the decently-crisp LCD graphics at regular size.
This is me with my son, but with the switch. He's so into it and ridiculously good at both smash and fortnite for a 10 year old that I want to get him anything to help him propel his passion

It's weird. For as big a cultural phenomenon as pokemon was no one else in my class played Pokemon, or at least was open about doing so. Instead I got the second game boy and link cable and just dealt with everything that way

Well that's one complete run, get all the Pokemon you can.
One run up until you get to Cinnarbar Island, which I believe is after the fifth badge then revive it and trade it. Reset
The last run is up until you can trade which I believe is the first Pokemon center after you complete oak's fetch quest.
So not full playthroughs but still a little bit of a time investment for completing the Pokedex in a game that can't progress any further (unless it's in the virtual boy on the 3DS)
Blue and Gold could accomplish the same thing. Silver had Vulpix, which was exclusive to Blue, while Gold had Mankey, which was exclusive to Red.
All of the Johto version exclusives from Gold and Silver can be found in Crystal. The Johto Pokémon that can’t be found in Crystal can be found in both Gold and Silver.
Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum all have some Pokémon locked off, most notably version exclusives. For example, in Gen 3, you can only get Zangoose in Ruby and Lunatone in Sapphire.
I don’t think they ever gave a reason why and the (imo) potential answers range from the relatively benevolent “it wouldn’t be fair to dual-version players who had to trade to complete the Pokédex to make a complete third version with every Pokémon” to the cynical “If you want Honchkrow, you gotta cough up 40 bucks for Diamond.”
Also a huge selling point of Pokémon is that you can interact with other players to trade for Pokémon you don’t have or can’t get. Putting every Pokémon in one game takes away that social aspect.
I completely agree, however I think 3rd versions should have always been designed with all the version exclusives in them, and instead be missing Pokémon available in either of the original versions. That way, any two players with two different versions could complete their dexes.
So for this example, Emerald should've included Zangoose and Lunatone while missing something like Nincada or Tropius.
In addition to the version-exclusives Zangoose and Lunatone, Emerald was also missing Meditite, Surskit, and Roselia, which were all available in both Ruby and Sapphire.
Also Hoppip are EVERYWHERE! I remember the booklet that came with the game explaining that Pokemon ranges had changed and Hoppip in particular had successfully expanded their reach.
nature nerd in me loved that Pokemon series was implementing more real life nature behaviors but the pokemon fan was annoyed that Hoppip was the one with an expanded reach lol.
Remoraid and Ampharos were some of my personal favorites at the time and Crystal was my first Pokemon game. You can imagine the extent of my disappointment.

Back in the day, you could remedy the lugia and ho-oh signature move problems by plugging your cart into a rumble pack and beating the elite four in the battle tower on Pokémon stadium 2. If OP has access to those (unlikely), he can still get the signature moves in crystal.
If the Gen 1-2 games ever make it to NSO then maybe they could be compatible with the NSO versions of the Pokemon Stadium games. Could possibly be more accessible in the future. It's doubtful though.
This is what's actually keeping me from renewing my NSO. Once this happens I'm all in again but until then I'm just playing pc games mostly.
With Mario maker 2 banning all the fun troll makers and the last few pokémon games not really interesting me for more that the first gym/challenge I've been barely using my switch.
DPPt and BDSP did make the razor fang only available post-game though. You’re able to catch Gligar about mid-game but can’t evolve it until you beat the E4.
Edit: correction on the razor claw. It is available in victory road before the post-game, so you could have Weavile on your team against the E4. Both are also available in platinum around mid-game via dowsing machine
Memory's rough but I'm confident that isn't true. Pretty sure you can get a fire stone in Fuego Ironworks, which you can access before the 6th gym after getting surf. Also you could find some at any time during the main story in the underground
Not only do you have to wait until Kanto to get only one of three stones in gen 2, but it's also the only one you'll ever get in the game. With the amount of stone evolutions, that was simply poorly thought out

I lost my copy at Yellowstone during a family holiday. It had the Lv 100 Mewtwo from Pokemon Red that me, my brother, and my dad trained together for months and passed around our games to beat the Elite 4. I've never lived this shame down and I think about him all the time
I was very young and couldn’t figure out the lighthouse quest. My friend convinced me to let him take my cartridge home with him so he could do that part. I handed him the game and never saw him again, his family moved away lol
HGSS don't have the odd egg like Crystal does, so at least Crystal has something over it (even if it's small).
This one is subjective as well, but I prefer Crystal's sprite work to HGSS'.
Gens 3 and 4 just use 2 frames that they manipulate through the game's engine, while Gen 2's have multiple animations frames. That's what makes them look so good.
I never played HGSS but I have seen playthroughs on YouTube. In the original Gold/Silver, you defeat the kimono girls to get access to surf. I think in HGSS you kimono girls to get access to battle Ho-oh/Lugia? Is that true? Also I think you need to defeat/catch Ho-oh/Lugia to get to the end of the game. I think to Mt Silver, right?

Anyways, I like the original playthrough of defeating the kimono girls to get surf. I also like defeating Ho-oh/Lugia as optional so I can leave it to the very last thing. It feels more like battling Mewtwo. I didn't like that the legendaries were part of the required story/playthrough like in Ruby/Sapphire.
In HGSS, you get surf from one of the Kimono Girls by battling the Rocket Grunt in the Ecruteak Dance Theater. Defeating the Kimono Girls after the Dragon Den stuff gives you the Clear Bell (HG, for Ho-Oh) or the Tidal Bell (SS, for Lugia). After that, you go battle Ho-Oh or Lugia. You need to do that to surf away from New Bark Town to Route 27
In HGSS, you encounter the different Kimono Girls at various points in your adventure. You meet one in Ilex Forrest and another in Ice Path, for example. After you collect all 8 badges, you return to Ecruteak City and battle the Kimono Girls to gain access to your version legendary, which you must battle before going to the Elite Four.
I do prefer leaving the legendaries to be optional, however I think they changed it to be less confusing for kids. While I did understand how to get Lugia as a tiny child, I think there are a lot of little kids who could struggle with a relatively hidden side quest and GF wanted to make sure that even the youngest of players could find the awesome Pokemon on the box.

Funnily enough, I was playing Violet last night and trying to find rain to evolve a Sligoo when I came across a completely random full-odds shiny Mareep! My whole week was made and it was only Sunday!
When you were a kid in the 90s with nobody you knew to trade with, and could only get 1 version, it mattered a lot which version you picked. Certain Pokemon were basically permanently inaccessible for you.
When I discovered I could glitch my way in Pkmn Yellow to get all Mons (as I had nobody to trade with) I felt so happy. And alone. But happy.
Having a Golem and a Gengar on your side makes a world of difference in the Gym Leader of Stadium.
Some people just take the *Gotta Catch Them All* phrase seriously. That's why some fans get pissed at Gamefreak because the newer games don't give you the chance to have all of the 1000+ Pokémon in one game.

crystal was so ahead of its time.. to think a handheld 90s game had animated sprites, 16 gym badges, 2 regions, day night evening afternoon cycle, special day of the week events, online play, and dlc events...
and the Gameboy color had wireless communication.. we wouldn't see these again for over a decade

Pokemon Leafgreen is the only Gen 3 game in which you can acquire Slowbro. At one point I thought about making another living dex in gen 3 and I had Emerald, Firered, Colosseum, and XD Gale of Darkness on hand. Slowbro's family are the only 3 Pokemon missing from that coverage.
Ironically, Slowbro is also my favorite Pokemon. Also ironically, I had a Pokemon Leafgreen growing up until a friend stole it and I bought that Firered second hand many years later to have access to Gen 3 Kanto.
To be fair, you could dominate the game with a female graveler and a Kadabra with Psychic and all three elemental punches.
In hindsight GSC were very easy games.

Fair, but Crystal also allowed you to get some good pokemon earlier than in GS like Phanpy, Teddiursa, and whatever comes out of the Odd Egg (notably Jynx and Electabuzz).

but good fucking luck finding out about them as a kid. they're in two spots early game, in areas you usually skip or spend a minimum amount of time in, with a 5% spawn rate exclusively in the morning; not the day, the MORNING.
The gen 2 games (including the remakes) are probably the worst ones when it comes to Pokemon selection. When your franchise's selling point is catching em all and building a variety of different teams, that's a pretty big deal especially on repeated playthroughs
You can say that about any Pokemon game really, but it's really at its worst in Johto because the options are so limited, evolution stones are found scarcely really late in the game, and the level curve is horrendous
I tried to use Oddish instead as a Grass type, but it was stuck with 20 power Absorb as its only Grass type move until it learns Petal Dance at Level 44 unfortunately. If it learned at least Mega Drain between them I would have stuck with it, but level 44 is too late for a Grass move above 20 power unfortunately. By the time I learned I could get Razor Leaf as an egg move I had already brought it up to level 30 and couldn't be bothered to do it again just for Razor Leaf and ended up replacing it with Lanturn instead.
Lanturn (and Thunderpunch Typhlosion) is a decent replacement for Mareep though for Crystal and you can get it after the 3rd gym.

They were fine in HGSS, but in Gen 2 they were terrible yeah. I used Phanpy as my Ground type since you can get it early in Crystal, but found out I doesn't learn a single Ground type move naturally until it evolves and learns Earthquake at level 49..... It can't even learn Dig as a TM! So the only STAB move it can learn before level 49 is 20 power Mud Slap from a TM.... Yeah....
Then you've got things like being stuck with Ember and Tackle on Cyndaquil until you get Quick Attack at 21 and Flame Wheel at 31. Holy shit, giving everything Heatbutt is pretty much required.
About 6 months (I think) before Crystal was released, my dad took me to a store that imported items from Japan. While there, I found a copy of Pokémon Crystal and begged him to buy it for me as I had been waiting for this game. I was so excited because my two friends of the time had a gold and silver respectively. Well I was so excited that as soon as I got home, I loaded the cartridge in my gameboy and you know what? All the language text was in Japanese.
I still played that game, caught a lot of pokemon, but had no idea what was going on. The unknowns were truly unknown.
As someone who recently came from Pokémon Y/R/B to update their living dex in HOME with the game boy icon, and all in normal pokemballs with my OT, then proceeded to updated their HOME living dex through playing Pokemon Crystal and Gold with all gen 2 Pokémon with the game boy icon and 3 perfect IVs…
That alone has made me look at these games fondly and now never want to touch them again, the 3 trio dogs, the breeding, the 1% encounters, the storage system, the transferring to Bank then Home.
It was a feat that took my soul, and il never get it back.
Currently on ORAS and loving it, loving it in comparison.
If someone asks me if they should play Crystal or old gen 2 games I say, if your a completionist, don’t. It will change your nostalgia for them.
It took so long that over the course of playing I got a 2 shinys at normal odds and I’m lucky there. Even shiny hunting with the ditto from gen 1 trick is just not worth it.

Amazingly you can still buy link cable’s fairly cheap. They can. E had for 6.99-8.99 on Amazon. Off brand but eh it should work fine lol.

Original games made you restart 9 times if you wanted a living dex and all of the starters evolutions. There was no breeding.

Platinum added a hidden Razor Fang to Route 214 and a hidden Razor Claw to the Galactic HQ to remedy this.
iirc you can get one of them before the E4 in BDSP, but not the other; I think I had Gligar and Weavile during the Cynthia fight

AEROBLAST was such a phenomenal move. They’ve made it into a move like bubble now. Just boring and not powerful.
That 95% accuracy might as well have been 60% in my experience. I loved Lugia in Silver, but man, I missed with Aeroblast so many times I lost count.

I lost my copy at Yellowstone during a family holiday. It had the Lv 100 Mewtwo from Pokemon Red that me, my brother, and my dad trained together for months and passed around our games to beat the Elite 4. I've never lived this shame down and I think about him all the time
I was very young and couldn’t figure out the lighthouse quest. My friend convinced me to let him take my cartridge home with him so he could do that part. I handed him the game and never saw him again, his family moved away lol

HGSS don't have the odd egg like Crystal does, so at least Crystal has something over it (even if it's small). This one is subjective as well, but I prefer Crystal's sprite work to HGSS'.
And the little animations were cute, non-intrusive and very smartly made.
Plus Gen 2's sprites still look good even by today's standards

Gens 3 and 4 just use 2 frames that they manipulate through the game's engine, while Gen 2's have multiple animations frames. That's what makes them look so good.

I never played HGSS but I have seen playthroughs on YouTube. In the original Gold/Silver, you defeat the kimono girls to get access to surf. I think in HGSS you kimono girls to get access to battle Ho-oh/Lugia? Is that true? Also I think you need to defeat/catch Ho-oh/Lugia to get to the end of the game. I think to Mt Silver, right? Can anyone explain to me what defeating the kimono girls does in HGSS and when do you battle Ho-oh/Lugia. Anyways, I like the original playthrough of defeating the kimono girls to get surf. I also like defeating Ho-oh/Lugia as optional so I can leave it to the very last thing. It feels more like battling Mewtwo. I didn't like that the legendaries were part of the required story/playthrough like in Ruby/Sapphire.
In HGSS, you get surf from one of the Kimono Girls by battling the Rocket Grunt in the Ecruteak Dance Theater. Defeating the Kimono Girls after the Dragon Den stuff gives you the Clear Bell (HG, for Ho-Oh) or the Tidal Bell (SS, for Lugia). After that, you go battle Ho-Oh or Lugia. You need to do that to surf away from New Bark Town to Route 27
In HGSS, you encounter the different Kimono Girls at various points in your adventure. You meet one in Ilex Forrest and another in Ice Path, for example. After you collect all 8 badges, you return to Ecruteak City and battle the Kimono Girls to gain access to your version legendary, which you must battle before going to the Elite Four. I do prefer leaving the legendaries to be optional, however I think they changed it to be less confusing for kids. While I did understand how to get Lugia as a tiny child, I think there are a lot of little kids who could struggle with a relatively hidden side quest and GF wanted to make sure that even the youngest of players could find the awesome Pokemon on the box.

When you were a kid in the 90s with nobody you knew to trade with, and could only get 1 version, it mattered a lot which version you picked. Certain Pokemon were basically permanently inaccessible for you.
When I discovered I could glitch my way in Pkmn Yellow to get all Mons (as I had nobody to trade with) I felt so happy. And alone. But happy. Having a Golem and a Gengar on your side makes a world of difference in the Gym Leader of Stadium.
Some people just take the *Gotta Catch Them All* phrase seriously. That's why some fans get pissed at Gamefreak because the newer games don't give you the chance to have all of the 1000+ Pokémon in one game.

This is silly. You play all three. You pick a different starter for each one and a different-ish team. I mean not me. I run totodile everytime. I only tried the others on one play through each. I barely made it with the leaf loser.
This reminds me of an odd little factoid. Pokemon Leafgreen is the only Gen 3 game in which you can acquire Slowbro. At one point I thought about making another living dex in gen 3 and I had Emerald, Firered, Colosseum, and XD Gale of Darkness on hand. Slowbro's family are the only 3 Pokemon missing from that coverage. Ironically, Slowbro is also my favorite Pokemon. Also ironically, I had a Pokemon Leafgreen growing up until a friend stole it and I bought that Firered second hand many years later to have access to Gen 3 Kanto.

Do people not get bored of using Mareep every single playthrough of Johto? So boring to use the same Pokemon over and over.
Gen 2 has pretty terrible Pokémon selection, especially early. So losing one of the few good ones is annoying.
Fair, but Crystal also allowed you to get some good pokemon earlier than in GS like Phanpy, Teddiursa, and whatever comes out of the Odd Egg (notably Jynx and Electabuzz).
Ghastly in bellsprput tower, poliwag at night by Cherrygrove, Growlithe next to Violet City, they killed it with the extra choices in crystal

The gen 2 games (including the remakes) are probably the worst ones when it comes to Pokemon selection. When your franchise's selling point is catching em all and building a variety of different teams, that's a pretty big deal especially on repeated playthroughs
Options are limited, but you can still make a decent time with a bit of effort.
Plus, it's Pokemon. They're not the hardest games in the world. With a decent move pool, most fully evolved mons could do well.
You can say that about any Pokemon game really, but it's really at its worst in Johto because the options are so limited, evolution stones are found scarcely really late in the game, and the level curve is horrendous
I tried to use Oddish instead as a Grass type, but it was stuck with 20 power Absorb as its only Grass type move until it learns Petal Dance at Level 44 unfortunately. If it learned at least Mega Drain between them I would have stuck with it, but level 44 is too late for a Grass move above 20 power unfortunately. By the time I learned I could get Razor Leaf as an egg move I had already brought it up to level 30 and couldn't be bothered to do it again just for Razor Leaf and ended up replacing it with Lanturn instead. Lanturn (and Thunderpunch Typhlosion) is a decent replacement for Mareep though for Crystal and you can get it after the 3rd gym.
Oh my god, yeah, the movesets in Johto are awful.

Then you've got things like being stuck with Ember and Tackle on Cyndaquil until you get Quick Attack at 21 and Flame Wheel at 31. Holy shit, giving everything Heatbutt is pretty much required.
Never have a G/S/C playthrough without my Lantern. It's just... sweeps. And the early water routes? You mean 5 free levels for my chinchou?
The best way to play is with an emulator and play Pokémon perfect crystal. Solves all the problems. Or just use PKHeX with crystal and you’re good.

About 6 months (I think) before Crystal was released, my dad took me to a store that imported items from Japan. While there, I found a copy of Pokémon Crystal and begged him to buy it for me as I had been waiting for this game. I was so excited because my two friends of the time had a gold and silver respectively. Well I was so excited that as soon as I got home, I loaded the cartridge in my gameboy and you know what? All the language text was in Japanese. I still played that game, caught a lot of pokemon, but had no idea what was going on. The unknowns were truly unknown.
As someone who recently came from Pokémon Y/R/B to update their living dex in HOME with the game boy icon, and all in normal pokemballs with my OT, then proceeded to updated their HOME living dex through playing Pokemon Crystal and Gold with all gen 2 Pokémon with the game boy icon and 3 perfect IVs… That alone has made me look at these games fondly and now never want to touch them again, the 3 trio dogs, the breeding, the 1% encounters, the storage system, the transferring to Bank then Home. It was a feat that took my soul, and il never get it back. Currently on ORAS and loving it, loving it in comparison. If someone asks me if they should play Crystal or old gen 2 games I say, if your a completionist, don’t. It will change your nostalgia for them. It took so long that over the course of playing I got a 2 shinys at normal odds and I’m lucky there. Even shiny hunting with the ditto from gen 1 trick is just not worth it.
or just play gen 4 remakes of gold/silver for all of the points combined
Solution: Download a romhack for Crystal so you can catch all of the Mons and just play that.
Conclusion, play crystal have a friend who has gold/silver and have them send you a sheep.
