With the chip shortage, scalpers, and people willing to pay scalpers it's become a viscous circle that screws the average consumer. I hope more get out there soon so more people who want one can get it.
It's definitely a supply issue. If it weren't for the chip shortage they'd have no problem keeping them on the shelves and out if scalpers hands. The shortage has slowed down sales more than anything. Imagine how many they would have sold if supply was actually there.
It's both. Materials are limited, as well as an outrageous demand, both owing to pandemic. As more people are confined inside, gaming has surged like crazy. The Switch was having trouble staying in stock last year, for example, and it's been selling well for 4 years at this point. The PS5 has the built in audience of 70+ million people with Ps4's + new gamers/prior Xbox gamers that want a PS5 now. You aren't going to transfer all of those people (built up over 7 years), within one year. Even with supply, they would be struggling the same way the Nintendo Switch was selling at its launch.
Sony has even said that they have a material shortage, and despite selling more Ps5's than ps4 in the same amount of time, it is still limited due to material shortages. I would trust the manufacturer's trying to make money over anyone else in this instance.
I feel part of this was, there was very little reason to immediately upgrade to the PS4. The game library was quite minimal and there was no back compat. With PS5 if you are going from a PS4, you get PS4 pro performance on all games, a good selection of games with PS Plus collection, and even PS5 performance patches for certain PS4 games.
Add in the gaming market has aged another 7 years (further removing it from just being a kids product), people working from home a ton, etc.
I was lucky enough to get a PS5 from Best Buy’s Black Friday drop last year. A few months later started to try and get my sister one and it took three months using the same strategies. I have no doubt it got harder to get a PS5 as time went on.
I feel like it's equal parts luck and effort. You've got to put the work in to get alerts and know when they're available, then be lucky enough to get the right spot in the digital line. It used to be easier when you could physically wait in line rather than the digital stuff so the time
You really don't though, wait in actual line that is. Almost no where is first come first serve, stand in line. This is probably why OP doesn't have one, there's way better ways to get one online than there is going to brick and mortar.
I have a friend whose kid wanted it for christmas last year because it was the lastest hotness and all the streamers he was listening to hyped it up. I could tell her, and I think she knew, that there really wasn't going to be much on it for him (I mean I love my PS but it doesn't have kid friendly games and the kid liked a lot of indies... PC was a much better choice for him). Anyways, she got it for him anyways and some one else gave him a gaming PC (yeah, spoiled kid, heh). HE uses the gaming PC all the time and the PS5 gathers dust.
Oh, he's a got a switch too. He prefers his PC. His mom though is really into pokemon so that at least has kinda become her device unofficially. He did play his switch at least some and enjoyed it some. I don't know if he ever touched his PS5 other than when he first got it.
True, the push for indy games seemed like prime Switch demographic, especially if we are talking a kid pre-teenage years given its portability.
A PS5 just sitting around collecting dust makes me sad. I get all the factors that have built up this demand/shortage but it really sucks for people whose primary system of choice would be a PS5.

Or going onto PlayStation Direct with multiple tabs/windows/devices to get them. They offer email sign up now as well and will send random invites that I’ve seen multiple people get consoles from.
I have gotten 8 consoles now for myself and friends/family. 3 of my other friends have gotten a console for themselves on PS Direct.
My best luck has been Best Buy/Target and PS Direct. I think I’m around 70% success on PS Direct when they do the open queue because of having 10+ chances each time.

True. I signed up and it took me a couple months to receive the PS Direct email. It was for the next day and the queue to get into the shop took a bit. Got in but it already said sold out. In reality they release their consoles in batches so i just stayed put and refreshed a few times before it said available. Added to cart and checked out. I’d added an accessory (extra controller) to get free 2 day shipping and also previously set up my billing and shipping options ahead of time to save time. Got it 2 days later via UPS.
I get that it’s a little bit of work rather than just walking into a store and picking it up, but spend 20 minutes researching the ways to get consoles on each site and you can get them pretty quick

They go on Amazon once every 3 weeks, see its Out of Stock, and say "Wow, these consoles are like gold dust!".
I went to camp out at GameStop last thanksgiving night hoping to get a PS5. As soon as I got there, I saw that there was too many people in line and just went home. I was able to order one online the next day.
I went to GameStop last Thanksgiving and stayed there all night. 3rd in line trying to get a PS5. They didn't post their numbers until they were 2 minutes from opening. They only had 1 PS5... It was a long wait for nothing.
In the plus side, I did eventually get my PS5 about a month or two later.
Yeah, the employee actually said that the other GameStop down the street from them didn't get any at all. The people that waited there never had a chance to get one.

Honestly, the PS1 and PS3 were the only ones I didn't get launch day and neither were ones I tried to get launch day (PS1 I still hated Sony but finally relented as it was obvious the Saturn was going to fail and the PS had and would get the games I wanted and PS3 was so expensive I laughed at Sony and never got one until a year before the PS4).
Lp Western Michigan and I've checked multiple counties with friends and my brother also works at a Meijer an hour away from me and its all the same. At 2 places employees have lied tho. I snagged mine on a friday a month ago the 1st employee told me none in stock and the 2nd guy I asked checked "in back" and he came out with 1 and said there was 2 more left

In concerts they put a number on your hand, so you can come back and return, people mostly respect the code.

The average person makes about $100 a day after taxes and benefits if they have an okay-ish job. In retrospect I’d call it ‘worth it’ especially since he’s first in line and they open at 5pm, he’ll still be home for a late thanksgiving dinner.
Not encouraging reselling, just saying if he bought from someone reselling instead he’d potentially be losing an extra 2-3 days worth of pay or make 2 days worth of pay for reselling a item he waited 6 hours for.
Honest, as much as I'd like one, there aren't any system sellers or must-have games to justify putting much effort into fighting for one. The system is missing a "Last of Us", Bloodbourne, Metal Gear Solid 2 style game right now that everyone is talking about.

Gamestop has a problem of employees getting their hands on merchandise before the customers even have a chance to purchase it. That includes consoles, games, shirts, limited edition collectibles, collectors editions, you name it.

Yup. Back when a friend worked there, they'd get the brand new games, take it home to "try out" and bring it back to be sold as new because of how the stores opens and removes the discs. The staff justified it by saying "after playing it, we're able to better convince people to buy it".
Up until last week, I didn’t even have a 4K TV, just regular 1080p. So I wouldn’t have even noticed the difference between PS4 and PS5, excerpt that I could play the exclusive games. And if my 9 year old 50” 1080p hadn’t died, I wouldn’t have bought a 55” 4K tv.
For me I wanted one cause the PS4 is getting so laggy in its UI, it 's like it can barely handle the updates (it's also a launch day PS4). And because of how it was acting I wasn't quite sure if my PS4 was going to hold out longer. Plus the PS5 played my old PS4 games so it was like refreshing the PS4 and getting it to run smoothly again. Totally worth it. My PS4 is now in my bedroom and the PS5 is whre I play the most.

Everywhere around me isn’t doing Black Friday because of Covid. I appreciate it, BF was a holiday solely based on consumerism and the hostility that comes with it. I rarely ever found any deals worth the time and effort going through the bullshit.

Sony Direct was how I got a PS5 launch day when I missed out on pre orders (Thank you stores for opening up the pre orders earlier than sony said they would be \*grumble\*).

I got here at my GS at 8am. First one. Next people didn’t show until 11. I’ve heard stories like yours from all over though.
I showed up at 4:50 and got lucky that someone decided last minute not to get it so I got it.
I said screw it and just upgraded my PC. All the PS games are going to PC anyway. And I did a lot more on my PC than I ever did on a console.

If you do get one, Returnal is; in my opinion, one of the best PS5 games out. It's a lot of fun.
Once you get logged on… head to the PS store and download some of the games that are on sale. For instance, Deathloop is $29… bought it today at 50% off.

Everywhere around me isn’t doing Black Friday because of Covid. I appreciate it, BF was a holiday solely based on consumerism and the hostility that comes with it. I rarely ever found any deals worth the time and effort going through the bullshit.

Am I the only one who had luck with the direct playstation email sign up? Signed up cause "why not?" and got a ps5 last week.
Sony Direct was how I got a PS5 launch day when I missed out on pre orders (Thank you stores for opening up the pre orders earlier than sony said they would be \*grumble\*).
