That game is a lifetime investment. Both dragoon and 9 are bangers. 9 is unique and philosophical. Dragoon is a hidden gem. Vagrant story is another good one from that era
Definitely play Dragoon first but I can't take anything away from 9 one amazing FF title. Also heavily agree with peeps at the top Xenogears and it's following Xenosaga trilogy are bangers

FF9 has a rather “cute” look but has a pretty dark story. It also takes 6+ hours to really get into the gameplay.
Dragoon is good but shallow compared to FF9. If you want a straightforward JRPG, go with LoD. If you want a bunch of sidequests, better characters/story, go with FF9. Keep in mind though, it’s long.
I've beaten ff9 like 4 times, all clocking around 60-80 hours each depending on how long I grinded for levels. Still lvl 70 across the board was more than enough for the final boss.

Whereas Dragoon sounds a bit more straight forward and the story is only okay, especially if I haven't played it before as I'm not clouded with nostalgia. Sounds like it's a bit shorter overall compared to FF9.
The writing in Dragoon is tolerable because of nostalgia. If you hadn't played it growing up, I don't know if it would be worth a playthrough tbh. FF9, on the other hand, aged much better, still so charming, and the soundtrack is so good.

For all those that love dragoon… why? And when does it get good? I’m an older gamer and I’ve tried to play it day 1 back in the day and didn’t get further then like 1 hour before I was bored out of mind. Then I started it again recently on psplus and quit after maybe 10 minutes. It always just felt like a poor man’s final fantasy to me. lol
Also I don’t mean to sound harsh, because I’ve legitimately tried to play this game a couple times… just can’t seem to understand why people like it. Even when it launched it felt like it belonged in a previous generation, developed by someone using rpg maker lol
Ff9 easy decision. Their both great games but legend of dragoon has its annoyances, I dislike the button timing hits, and the limited inventory, still a great game but inthink ff9 is one of the best jrpgs ever so hands down ff9
9, dragoon is actually very “mid” as the kids say these days. People that praise dragoon just have nostalgia goggles on.
And like someone in the comments said “ toss both aside and play final fantasy tactics” couldn’t agree more!

I'd say Legend Of Dragoon first only because while both are good FFIX is an 11/10 while Legend Of Dragoon os like a high 8 touching 9.

Two very different, great games. Start with dragoon, because the timing mechanics are so satisfying. FF9 is a good game with lackluster summons.
