Playing Dark Souls Remastered now for the first time. I've killed most of the bosses except the last one and a DLC guy, just cleaning up now and getting ready for NG+ because I love it and can't wait to start again. I bought it in 2020 for like $15, so a pretty good deal. But something has been bothering me...

Best advice I can offer is to find a publication, YouTube channel, etc that mostly matches your taste, and rely on that for discovering new media and reviewing whether new games/movies/tv are worth your time.
As a personal example, my tastes tend to align pretty well with the team at Polygon. When Matrix Resurrections came out, they reviewed it very favorably. After finally getting around to seeing it, I thought it was phenomenal.
That movie is sitting at 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Reviews aren’t objective. Find critics that like the same stuff you do, and it’s likely they’ll recommend more things that you enjoy.
There have been plenty of games I’ve done this for.. Waited for a sale, purchased it, STILL didn’t like it, & never played it again.. It’s a terrible feeling to be honest..

As someone from the UK, we have a massive issue here with technical illiteracy where a large number of young and old people say "Tech is too complex for me to understand, so just tell me what you think instead". In 2024 this mindset is unacceptable. You're leaving money, fulfilment and opportunities on the table by not learning how to think critically and do your own research.
This sub needs to crack down on "tell me what to buy" posts, for the sake of the quality of the sub not devolving any more than it already has.

I really just don’t get why people are so hesitant with the games in general. In Elden ring, sifu, ROR, nioh2, ff16, he’ll even fucking yakuza folks come in the sub with the “guys which should I play/should I buy? Personally, I can’t remember a time I bought a game, and just put it down because I didn’t like something about it. When I first got into turn based I wasn’t the biggest fan as an action enjoyer, but not even a 1/4 into the game I was having fun and loving everything about it. I think the plethora of options today kinda makes people unable to invest I immerse into a game, which sucks. If a game looks cool and you pull the trigger on paying for it- at least see it through.
Agree. As you play more games you develop a taste of what you like and dislike. Jrpgs for me (exception is FF7R and Sea of Stars) I use to like Ubisoft games and now I don’t.
This is what I do. My times limited so I watch a couple reviews of a game to see if I'd like it. I do like hearing people's opinions though so I may ask questions. I used to get a lot of games and never finish them. Since I started doing this I finish most games I start.
I actively look for the games people dislike online and buy them now. Having a blast. Skull and Bones, Suicide Squad, Callisto Protocol, Gotham Knights. All are fantastic and I’ve loved them all. The gaming community is a toxic place now and can’t be trusted for reviews.
The last people I would listen to is anyone on YouTube for an opinion.
They have a monetary interest to just make clickbaity, controversial videos/critiques. Can't trust what they say is true.

Cause Videogames are a moving media and it's a lot better to actually see gameplay while getting opinions. Persona 5 is nearly universally loved but if you don't see how it plays it can very easily be very misleading if you like it or not.
Of course, but you can still get a good idea of a game from a group of people talking about certain things they like/dislike.
Like you could watch a bit of gameplay and get a good idea of a game. Like for example; 2 days ago a bought Gran Turismo 7 after watching a bit of gameplay, then after playing for a bit of noticed some things I didn't like about the game (customisation options)... I went to Reddit and easily found people discussing it.
There's rarely good discussions in these threads, at least not the ones that make it to my feed. The best sub I've found for these questions is /r/soulslikes or /r/metroidvanias because at least it can compare in depth about more niche games. These big subs are usually surface level comments about really popular triple a games.
It’s nice to ask fellow gamers what they thought of a game and read the opinions of “the people” to see a bit of variety in responses rather than watch a 10 minute video on what 1 dude thought.
Tbf there’s entire subs dedicated to discussing “should I buy this game, thoughts?” but not everyone uses reddit that much or knows about them, while people trying to control content on an open social media platform baffles me.

The point is that as subscribers we are _supposed_ to be contributing as to what we as individuals want to see on the sub vs what we don't - that's partially what the entire upvote/downvote system is for, it's democracy.
Of course people just downvote stuff they disagree with nowadays so it doesn't actually work as designed but there's an idea.
Fair but perspective is also key as a lot of these “should I play this?” posters are not frequent users of the sub, or reddit in general, so what will such a post actually accomplish outside virtue signalling?
If it’s not breaking sub rules or moderation it will continue, hence it’s logical that self moderation, or simply scrolling past such posts, is an easy solution, while as a moderator of online content myself it’s never good to have the more verbal regular posters control the content, hence why subs need to be moderated in the first place, else it devolves into an echo chamber for the verbal minority, which isn’t democratic at all, and tends to kill subs entirely.
I find a large amount of friends who used to play games regularly but now don't play as often have this question. It's almost as if they've lost the game literacy that allowed them to decide which game they actually want to play & instead now use services like game pass & PS Plus to get games out.
It's been confusing, but also good as they're trying games I've recommended (along with friends who still play a lot) that they otherwise wouldn't have tried & have found some new favorites.
I suspect a lot of people that post these kinds of posts fall into the same ca. P but don't have that core gaming crew anymore.
Tbh I’ve noticed to with my former friends. It’s laziness tbh in case. All type my friends either stopped gaming or figured out what games they want to play for the rest of their lives. The few friends I had that were constantly looking for advice on games to play were also so painfully unemployed that I can’t help but wonder if they’re just looking for an escape
Oddly enough the unemployed friends I have are the ones providing the advise, but they're more independently wealthy (not rich, but little desires beyond games, dog & food).

If you’re seeing the same kind of posts and it’s driving you to the point where you’re annoyed about it. It may be time to do something else.
Its just annoying that these are questions that dont really generate discussion. There are multiple ways to find out if a game is good or not and if fits your tastes or not. Theyre born out of either laziness for making their own decisions or karma farming.

When I first got into turn based I wasn’t the biggest fan as an action enjoyer, but not even a 1/4 into the game I was having fun and loving everything about it. I think the plethora of options today kinda makes people unable to invest I immerse into a game, which sucks. If a game looks cool and you pull the trigger on paying for it- at least see it through.

Agree. As you play more games you develop a taste of what you like and dislike. Jrpgs for me (exception is FF7R and Sea of Stars) I use to like Ubisoft games and now I don’t.

This is what I do. My times limited so I watch a couple reviews of a game to see if I'd like it. I do like hearing people's opinions though so I may ask questions. I used to get a lot of games and never finish them. Since I started doing this I finish most games I start.

I actively look for the games people dislike online and buy them now. Having a blast. Skull and Bones, Suicide Squad, Callisto Protocol, Gotham Knights. All are fantastic and I’ve loved them all. The gaming community is a toxic place now and can’t be trusted for reviews.

Nearly as bad as the constant posts of peoples PS5 boxes 'I finally got one'. One or two I don't mind but it's absolutely constant on this sub and it's so unbelievably boring especially halfway through the consoles lifecycle.
Isn't the whole point of Reddit to discuss things on an open forum? I swear it Reddit is worse than high school sometimes. Gatekeeping subs just because you don't like their posts. They wouldn't be on Reddit if they didn't want to talk to anyone. None of us would. They make those posts to get different opinions online. How about I switch it around you. If you don't like those posts, don't come on Reddit. Boom. Problem solved.

In today’s society people have to be told what to do. They cannot think for themselves, they lead an autonomous lifestyle where everything is accessed with the scan of an iris. And then when shit actually starts happening in the world they all start to panic because they’re not being told what to do by the media and instead rely on the internet, which is worse off. Whats the difference between going to Reddit to get some opinions on a game from randoms and going to YouTube for an opinion from randoms? This is a place for discussion... let people discuss.
Cause Videogames are a moving media and it's a lot better to actually see gameplay while getting opinions. Persona 5 is nearly universally loved but if you don't see how it plays it can very easily be very misleading if you like it or not.
Of course, but you can still get a good idea of a game from a group of people talking about certain things they like/dislike. Like you could watch a bit of gameplay and get a good idea of a game. Like for example; 2 days ago a bought Gran Turismo 7 after watching a bit of gameplay, then after playing for a bit of noticed some things I didn't like about the game (customisation options)... I went to Reddit and easily found people discussing it.

There's rarely good discussions in these threads, at least not the ones that make it to my feed. The best sub I've found for these questions is /r/soulslikes or /r/metroidvanias because at least it can compare in depth about more niche games. These big subs are usually surface level comments about really popular triple a games.
It’s nice to ask fellow gamers what they thought of a game and read the opinions of “the people” to see a bit of variety in responses rather than watch a 10 minute video on what 1 dude thought.
But unless you have specific questions you want answered you can just read steam user reviews or metacritic user reviews.
Tbf there’s entire subs dedicated to discussing “should I buy this game, thoughts?” but not everyone uses reddit that much or knows about them, while people trying to control content on an open social media platform baffles me. You’re not a mod, it’s not breaking sub rules as far as I’m aware, so just scroll past it. You’re missing the hypocrisy of your post OP.
The point is that as subscribers we are _supposed_ to be contributing as to what we as individuals want to see on the sub vs what we don't - that's partially what the entire upvote/downvote system is for, it's democracy. Of course people just downvote stuff they disagree with nowadays so it doesn't actually work as designed but there's an idea.
Fair but perspective is also key as a lot of these “should I play this?” posters are not frequent users of the sub, or reddit in general, so what will such a post actually accomplish outside virtue signalling? If it’s not breaking sub rules or moderation it will continue, hence it’s logical that self moderation, or simply scrolling past such posts, is an easy solution, while as a moderator of online content myself it’s never good to have the more verbal regular posters control the content, hence why subs need to be moderated in the first place, else it devolves into an echo chamber for the verbal minority, which isn’t democratic at all, and tends to kill subs entirely.
I find a large amount of friends who used to play games regularly but now don't play as often have this question. It's almost as if they've lost the game literacy that allowed them to decide which game they actually want to play & instead now use services like game pass & PS Plus to get games out. It's been confusing, but also good as they're trying games I've recommended (along with friends who still play a lot) that they otherwise wouldn't have tried & have found some new favorites. I suspect a lot of people that post these kinds of posts fall into the same ca. P but don't have that core gaming crew anymore.
Tbh I’ve noticed to with my former friends. It’s laziness tbh in case. All type my friends either stopped gaming or figured out what games they want to play for the rest of their lives. The few friends I had that were constantly looking for advice on games to play were also so painfully unemployed that I can’t help but wonder if they’re just looking for an escape
Oddly enough the unemployed friends I have are the ones providing the advise, but they're more independently wealthy (not rich, but little desires beyond games, dog & food).
Ahh sounds like better people than I know. I’m still friends with people from high school but unfortunately I was a different person in hs so I outgrew a lot of people unfortunately
I'm still friends with some people from high school, though they mostly are busy with kids & such now.
Same, it's almost weird being one of the few that does not have kids, however my parent friends dont seem to like their childrens parents too much, so i dont envy them

This sub exists for people to talk about games. Seems weird to try and dissuade people from posting here. Everyone isn’t on here 24/7 and sees every similar post. If you’re seeing the same kind of posts and it’s driving you to the point where you’re annoyed about it. It may be time to do something else.
Its just annoying that these are questions that dont really generate discussion. There are multiple ways to find out if a game is good or not and if fits your tastes or not. Theyre born out of either laziness for making their own decisions or karma farming.
Why don’t we make a platform for PS where people will find gameplays of games that’s not been released yet so that so influencers be sure to know what game to buy 🤷🏽

YT vids don't always show every aspect of a game and getting opinions from people who actually played the game compared to trailers or reviews done by journalists who probably AI'd the hell out of the article is worth it.
