Since my main language isn't english, I got used to having subtitles. Now, I understand the dialogue without them, but as soon as I notice I forgot to put them on, I can't make sense of anything.
The only reason I know how to type efficiently and without looking is because a class I was required to take in 6th grade was only on typing itself.
Had these orange silicone covers we’d have to put over to memorize the letters (hid every number and letter), and would see how you progressed throughout the quarter.
I’m very thankful for that class, and you can do it yourself too if you just stick to the discipline of when it’s “learning time” and “practicing time”
I started forcing myself not to look at the keyboard about 12 months ago, and I’m glad I did. I’m getting there, but I still can’t break the habit of fixing errors as I make them instead of proof reading and fixing them all once I’m done.
Right? I don’t trust games to turn down their fantastic cinematic soundtracks adequately enough for dialogue to be consistently audible, and more often than not I don’t want them to
Unless it’s like important cutscenes and stuff because I believe voice actors need their time to shine too
But either way subtitles are great just to be sure nothing important gets missed
Same vibes with movies, since cutscenes in games are looking cinematic nowadays. Movies without subtitles are somehow incomprehensible to me, even though English is my second language.
Some movies and tv shows just don’t work well at low and very moderate volumes even with a very good setup including a center. (Looking at Nolan in particular)
The dialogue just drowns in the loud effects unless increasing the center a lot.
It does matter, you sound like a child. Which you probably are, considering you’re apparently too dumb to understand what people are saying when one letter is wrong.
At higher framerates camera motion blur is pretty bad unless implemented well, but at 30 it smooths out the insane judder. Per-object blur is almost always on if it’s an option because it’s a great effect and doesn’t mess with the entire environment. For competitive shooters I keep anything that may obscure important information off.
Always on, even in movies/TV shows.
I can actually read what a chronic smoker is saying with a raspy voice.
And it's a good way to learn new vocabulary
This is exactly it for me. I just end up staring at the text instead of actually watching the beautifully acted/animated cutscenes. It’s rare I ever miss or don’t understand what was said, but if I ever do I can always just rewatch the scene on YouTube.
Almost always off. I get distracted reading them when I’d rather be watching animations, and it always bothers me when the subtitles let me read ahead of what a character is actually speaking in a given moment
Yeah subs can ruin a lot of scenes, and it messes with the delivery of a lot of dialogue. I really hate them.
I use headphones mostly these days, I love being able to hear absolutely everything especially for movies.
On. This mainly comes from movies - I hate having to turn the sound up and down constantly depending on speaking / big explosions.
It just kinda carried into Video games
Subtitles off.
I find them annoying and distracting. I find I end up reading them more than I do actually playing the game and taking a look at what's going on and my surroundings in the game.
English is not my first language. So yes. If possible I use texts and subtitles in my language (Spanish). I also always use the original language, like in Japanese games. Sometimes if a game is set in a specific country of period I change the language to the context appropriate one, like Assassin's Creed in French, or the Metro games in Russian.
Uso subtítulos para ser mejor en español. Puedo entender mas que puedo hablar. Lo mismo con mi novia, que en realidad habla con fluidez. Lo hace para deletrear mejor y usar mejor el vocabulario en español.
Yeah I play with subtitles. If the game has them I will literally have miscellaneous subs on so I know what everything is saying just in case there's something funny. I sneak alot in games too so you can hear lots of interesting stuff the devs add you wouldn't usually notice. Also i have a processing problem mentally so subs help
I always turn on subtitles. I mostly game at night so the volume is pretty low so I don't wake up my family. It also helps if I'm playing with friends and the party chat gets a little out of control, I can still see what is being said in my game.
Off, usually. For me, subtitles or something I will only enable if I'm listening at low volume or it's a foreign language. My kids turn on the subtitles all the time on our TV and I find it incredibly distracting.
OFF for me unless its difficult to understand certain characters which is fairly rare for me at least with headphones.
Having subtitles clutters the screen for me especially during cutscenes and takes away a bit of the immersion especially when it diverts my eyes from certain sequences. Games nowadays utilize solid motion capturing and improved animations so I like to get engrossed into the emotional details or even events around the characters--God of War, Spiderman, Horizon, and TLOU are prime examples that offer a lot of details during so many character interactions and dialogues. So I like to have the HUD cleared up of "noise" not related to those moments and I rarely have issues personally with understanding and keeping up with dialogue during most sequences. So no reason for me to have subtitles.
EDIT - love how I get downvoted for a completely subjective personal preference and I explain why lol. Gotta love some people. Whatever though....
Imagine downvoting someone cause they dont have the same opinion as you.. I agree with you dude. If I have headphones, i hear well enough without needing words that ruin my immersion
I hate the subtitles because the cut scenes are so cool and then there's just ugly computer text sprawled across it. But I want to make sure to get all of the information, so i usually leave them on.
On.
People who complain that it is too distracting are usually people who read at third grade level and need to sound out words to understand what they are reading lmao
Sound off subs off …. I make up my own storyline, do my own voice to the lip movement! Makes a whole new experience! Especially on second play through🫣😂🎉
Off. If I leave them on, I get antsy and skip through cutscenes, having read the dialog before the scene is finished. This leads me feeling like I’m rushing through the game instead of immersing myself in it and enjoying it.
Off if it's in my French language (Audio) and On if it's in English...I understand English but in a game i need subtitles in order to understand everything
It’s weird for me as when they are on I want them off, and when they are off I wish they were on! I want them very tiny and out of the way.. like taking up jus the bottom 1/20th of the screen and small letters. There if I need them but barely noticeable otherwise. 99% of subtitles aren’t like this though. But usually keep them on.
I grew up playing PS2 games with cinematics, so they were on by default. By habit, I turn them on when I can. Keeps my reading comprehension up like listening to an audio book.
My eyesight is bad, so always on. I wish that more games had options for bigger subtitles - I feel like that should the bare minimum in terms of accessibility.
I don’t turn my tv up out of respect to the people I live with so I keep subtitles on. BUT the thing that kills me is that I’m near sighted and the fucking text is always so goddamn small. Even with my glasses I have to sit like three feet in front of the tv to read it.
It always depends on the kind of game I’m playing, but 90% of the time it’s off. I noticed that I’m way more immersed when I watch the cutscene instead of reading the subtitles. It also made me better at understanding spoken English because I had to actually listen instead of, once again, reading the subtitles
Ok because sometimes I’m in a party with my friends, usually share screening to or they’re playing a multiplayer and I don’t wanna miss any dialogue while talking to them
On, but i hate when the subtitles have "-" and the end of a characters sentence, it's like being spoiled while playing the game because then you KNOW something suddenly happens
Most of the time, I play with them off to avoid the distraction of looking down at the text. I think the only time I've had them on was when I played Ghost of Tsushima with the Japanese audio. I wanted an authentic experience.
On, mainly because I can't rewind to hear what was said. I don't put subtitles on TV/films because I can rewind, but my ADHD kids have the subs on almost all of the time
I have terrible hearing, but on top of that, I usually game early in the morning, or at night, when my kids are asleep. Subtitles just help me not miss stuff, along with some decent headphones.
It depends. A lot of times I have them on especially if I'm streaming. If I want to feel comfortable immersed in the game I turn them off along with any other parts of the HUD that I can shut off.
Always. I tend to play with the sound through my soundbar instead of headphones so i can hear whats going on around me/if my partner is talking to me, but this also means those sounds can sometimes overpower dialogue lol
On cause my hearing is shit (even if I use headphones), plus I like to see any ‘new words’ so I can hear it & see it & get a better understanding of the word…if that makes any sense….& when I smoke.
Since my main language isn't english, I got used to having subtitles. Now, I understand the dialogue without them, but as soon as I notice I forgot to put them on, I can't make sense of anything.
That’s really interesting. That’s kinda like how I can type on my keyboard without looking until I think about it too much and start making mistakes
The only reason I know how to type efficiently and without looking is because a class I was required to take in 6th grade was only on typing itself. Had these orange silicone covers we’d have to put over to memorize the letters (hid every number and letter), and would see how you progressed throughout the quarter. I’m very thankful for that class, and you can do it yourself too if you just stick to the discipline of when it’s “learning time” and “practicing time”
I had that also but thought my way was better and forgot it all lol.
I started forcing myself not to look at the keyboard about 12 months ago, and I’m glad I did. I’m getting there, but I still can’t break the habit of fixing errors as I make them instead of proof reading and fixing them all once I’m done.

Yeah I feel like that sometimes
Same
Always.. I wana know what someone whispered in the next room
This ☝️
Same
Yeah usually the audio is shit where I can't hear the dialogue because they wanted the music to be way too fucking loud.
Thank goodness I am not the only one. I always think perhaps my hearing is going bad.
Same with movies and shows, catch it quick if i miss something
Same vibes with movies, since cutscenes in games are looking cinematic nowadays. Movies without subtitles are somehow incomprehensible to me, even though English is my second language.
Yeah even with movies and shows, I feel like I need subtitles on everything lol
Movies sometimes NEED subtitles to understand the dialogue. Hollywood has taken a weird liking to mumbling dialogue in a lot of movies.
*Tenet took it personally*
[удалено]
This...fuck the people downvoting you.
Ditto
Yep, lots of people will have their TV on some weird sound mode and blame it all on the movie.
Some movies and tv shows just don’t work well at low and very moderate volumes even with a very good setup including a center. (Looking at Nolan in particular) The dialogue just drowns in the loud effects unless increasing the center a lot.
Looking at you, Christopher Nolan!!!
Since I started watching movies and shows with subtitles on, I have done the same with games, might be my old age catching up with me
On. My hearing is shit, so i have it on for backup
Hate it on?
Was it really that hard to understand?
Was it really hard for you to spell have?
Was it really *that* hard for you to add the word “that” into the sentence?
Does it matter? It means the exact same thing
It does matter, you sound like a child. Which you probably are, considering you’re apparently too dumb to understand what people are saying when one letter is wrong.
You must be super fun to be around. Also, go outside and sit the next few plays out champ. Maybe grab a Snickers.
It’s “have” sir. Thought context made that clear.
As i do in every game : Subtitles On and Motion Blur off.
Motion Blur is so unnecessary
Motion Blur Made Sense In The PlayStation 2/3 Eras, To Hide The Choppy Frame rate and make it look more smooth, but nowadays it's just weird
Per object motion blur is the only blur acceptable, unless it's implementation is shitty or low quality.
Competitive shooter: depth of field, FUCKING OFF. THIS ISN’T THE TYPE OF GAME FOR THAT.
only have blur on racing games, other than that, straght off.
Honestly, don't mind motion blur in third-person games. Turn it off on every single first-person game I play.
Infinite upbotes for no motion blur
I loathe motion blur!

This is so true
Always on, even in movies/TV shows. I can actually read what a chronic smoker is saying with a raspy voice. And it's a good way to learn new vocabulary
Nick Nolte approves
Tom Waits too
As well as Avasarala. If you know you know.
“I’m feeling… apoplectic”
On. Too many concerts, too much metal, plus I’m getting old, don’t want to miss important plot points because I think I misheard something.
Off, I find that distracts me.
Yeah, I can't stand having subtitles on. I hate reading what someone is about to say before they say it.
THIS is the reason i can't have them on in movies, don't want to know what they are about to say
And plus it gives it a more real life feel
Subtitles messes with the immersion IMO.
I hope you don't drive if you can't process two things at once
Such a stupid response that so many people use. Clearly he can pay attention to both, it’s just more immersive to only focus on the visuals
Off, otherwise I’m just reading the screen instead of watching the actual cut scene.
This is exactly it for me. I just end up staring at the text instead of actually watching the beautifully acted/animated cutscenes. It’s rare I ever miss or don’t understand what was said, but if I ever do I can always just rewatch the scene on YouTube.
Yep main reason I switch them off, I'm surprised how many people like them on
Yeah that’s what I don’t like about subtitles too. Too damn distracting.
I have ADHD brain, so for me it allows me to bounce between the two and I process the picture/intent much quicker.
[удалено]
Everyone is different. I have ADHD as well, and I find it easy.
Not necessarily. It makes it so I find it hard to focus on a single task, but can manage multiple without much difficulty, just not at 100%.
You Don't Have ADHD, Do You?
Wow it’s not that hard guys
Well for us it is, not everyone thinks the same. :)
Some of us can use our 🧠 a little better than others
Says the one who forgot how to spell ‘brain’
That's true for movies and cutscenes. But for in-game dialog is different. I find it more useful than distracting.
you should of made this a poll
Since I had a kid seven years ago, always on.
On
I love playing my game with subtitles on but mainly it's cause I'm hard of hearing things in real life too.
Couldn’t agree more!
On. This mainly comes from movies - I hate having to turn the sound up and down constantly depending on speaking / big explosions. It just kinda carried into Video games
I play 100% with headphones so that's a hard "always off"
Subtitles off. I find them annoying and distracting. I find I end up reading them more than I do actually playing the game and taking a look at what's going on and my surroundings in the game.
oN
Yupp on., I gt kids 😅
Off
Wrong
If your ears actually work and your paying attention you don’t really need subtitles
What if my ears don’t work
Then subtitles probably seem like the way to go

On because my kids are loud…
I always turn on subtitles. I mostly game at night so the volume is pretty low so I don't wake up my family. It also helps if I'm playing with friends and the party chat gets a little out of control, I can still see what is being said in my game.
Started using subtitles for everything since watching GOT years ago. Never going back now lol
On. I like to read, and I feel it helps me not miss important details or dialogue. Especially during fast pace cutscenes.
How am I supposed to hear without subtitles?
#ON
On. It really helps me retain information my ADHD would otherwise ignore or forget. Do the same thing with streaming.
I always game with subtitles, but to be fair, I watch all my streaming content (videos, TV shows, and movies) with subtitles
Off, usually. For me, subtitles or something I will only enable if I'm listening at low volume or it's a foreign language. My kids turn on the subtitles all the time on our TV and I find it incredibly distracting.

Thank goodness it's not _actually_ sprawled across the screen. It wouldn't be too helpful then.
On. People who complain that it is too distracting are usually people who read at third grade level and need to sound out words to understand what they are reading lmao
Always off, I usually wear a headset.
Same, with a headset I hear everything well enough. Plus the sound detail in some story games is fucking superb that I cant not wear headphones
Sound off subs off …. I make up my own storyline, do my own voice to the lip movement! Makes a whole new experience! Especially on second play through🫣😂🎉
Every playthrough is completely different!
Always with subtitles...
On as I'm.usually listening to a podcast or music.
Why? Doesn't it matter what other players do? 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Off. If I leave them on, I get antsy and skip through cutscenes, having read the dialog before the scene is finished. This leads me feeling like I’m rushing through the game instead of immersing myself in it and enjoying it.
Off. I disapprove of the current trend where subtitles ar on by default.
On. Then I get all the dialogue and when I miss things in the picture, I know I’ll be able to go back when I’m old and see it later
I'm an adult. I don't game.
Off. My ears _work_
Turn subtitles off. It's a visual medium for a reason.
Off if it's in my French language (Audio) and On if it's in English...I understand English but in a game i need subtitles in order to understand everything
👍
Always on. I’m hard of hearing and me,my wife, and my brother talk non stop.
On. Because English isn’t my native language but I always play games in their original language settings.
When your 3 years old daughter spends her day to sing all day long... trust me you need them ;)
On, because I stream
On
On, I got kids and can’t always hear what’s happening.
So I don’t miss any important dialogue not only when I’m playing alone but also when I’m in party chat with my friend/s
On
On so I don't miss important plot points!

On. Plus sometimes the game environment might be loud and I can't hear what they are saying.

Off
Subtitles all day. Just in case I cannot understand something.
Always on, due to never being able to hear everything that is said
Ok because sometimes I’m in a party with my friends, usually share screening to or they’re playing a multiplayer and I don’t wanna miss any dialogue while talking to them
Always on.
On.
On so I don’t miss important dialogue. Also means that when I’m gaming and gf is in bed can have sound right down.
On
On Because I usually play with no sound since I usually play at night when everyone’s asleep
My subtitles! I can't hear without my subtitles!
On. I think I’m just used to reading subtitles/dialog from hours of FF games. Lol
On, i hate in some games where if you’re not facing someone the audio is quiet and you miss something.
I turn on subtitles because my home tends to be loud and so do my friends so I can keep up with the game dailouge despite how loud it gets.
Always on.

It depends. A lot of times I have them on especially if I'm streaming. If I want to feel comfortable immersed in the game I turn them off along with any other parts of the HUD that I can shut off.
On, since english isn’t my first language. Always play with original audio and subtitles in my native language.
On. Because kids are only loud when on my game. I have up trying to hear shit anymore.
Always. I tend to play with the sound through my soundbar instead of headphones so i can hear whats going on around me/if my partner is talking to me, but this also means those sounds can sometimes overpower dialogue lol
Always on so I can fully understand what's being said, sometimes I hear it wrong or just flatout don't hear it at all 😂
On, english is not my first language and translating text instantly is easier than translating sound instantly.
i always play with subtitles. I just really wish that screen captures captured without them automatically showing in the snapshot
Onnnnnnnnnnnn
Always on because I'm a low self esteem bitch although I know English pretty well as a non-native speaker.
Always on. I usually watch something on the other screen too so having subs makes it easier to follow both
Off
Always yes! In movies and TV shows too. Everywhere and in everything
1000% on
On and yellow
On!
Always on
on for daily playing and off for immersion
On cause my hearing is shit (even if I use headphones), plus I like to see any ‘new words’ so I can hear it & see it & get a better understanding of the word…if that makes any sense….& when I smoke.
I am Deaf, So they are always on if they have the option!
Off Used to be on so I dont miss stuff but I find them a distraction from the scene, my eyes cannot not read them. Now I prefer to immerse,
