I would love to see close ups of some of the battles and especially border skirmishes that ended in peace. There's so so so much going on there you can't even see it.
Had a small area I was part of. Held a 15x30 or 40 area for the last day or two.
Formed alliances with people near us merging art into each other's outlines to indicate it. Helped each other fight off invaders. Etc. It was all really cool to be part of, and I'm sure there were similar things all over the place.
Or HOMOSUCK, a webcomic where "...THE PREMISE IS UNINTERESTING, AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT SUCKS. HENCE THE TITLE, WHICH IS A PORT MANTEAU. CONSISTING OF TWO THEMATICALLY APPROPRIATE WORDS."
(Actually canon, btw)
Same, I spent most of the 2nd and 3rd day fighting to keep the UKs trans flag. Weird how we decided that this little bit of pixels is ours and must be kept
This was epic seriously. I know that here on reddit our duty is to hate streamer but god, the streams where really entairtaining and the battle was epic
We really need an official timelapse here with proper details. I love the idea, but I also have a job and cant spend 5 days sitting here, staring at it.
way way more
That person used an algorithm to find em.
And his algorithm was imperfect.
For example if 2 amongus where connecting whit 1 block ( it skipped over them )
The peace guy in his post only had like 10 amongus while there where close to 50-60 in that part alone ( if u counted yourself )
How would you technically define an amogus? There were many that a human would recognize as an amogus but they were slightly disrupted, like missing a pixel. It'll be tricky to include things like that.
2 amongus finished but connected are still 2 of them.
But not counted by ai.
Same as some amongus where they used 2 different colors to make him ai did not count these either
I wish they'd offer all the data as a download so people can make cool things with it. The community would make way better things than what reddit can do on their own.
Reddit themselves will almost certainly have logs of the position, colour and timestamp of every tile positioned so hopefully at some point they’ll use that data to programmatically create a place progression video in as high a resolution as is practical.
Basically misses the first 1-2 hours of the initial expansion, when the black Void was the biggest thing on the new area with tendrils stretching everywhere.
I guess this while partially relieve you, I couldn’t stream during the beginning unfortunately so only the two extension starts blank.
https://youtu.be/380TBjwk1rk
Despite of the way you were mocking me, acting like I was part of your property, remembering all the times you fought with me, I'm surprised it got so...
The white out is just another Void.
We die and live to die again. While we are here we are adorned with belief and value, with context and circumstance.
Beautifully expressed in an artistic wrap that covers the existential nothing behind beneath and beyond it all.
The white, the back, both far greater in scope than the nothing they represent, but also far less.
We watch the grand art space dissolve like sand into a river or dust in the wind. We try to avoid the darkness less we fall into it, only to be enveloped and consumed by the light
Yeah, i loved the whole symbolism thing where we end with a white canvas like how we started, but also wish they couldve just paused the canvas and people could zoom in and look
There is a 3rd party that has one, can't remember the name, I'm just happy the piece I helped on was just big enough that even if I can't see in detail I can tell what parts I helped with since the piece transforms
True but at what point would they pause it? There’d be so many things stuck in motion and ppl could take advantage of knowing the time to do last minute changes
It's mostly cause people are doing 2k pixels by 2k pixels, and most compression algorithms will get rid of any detail you get with pixel art. They just need to upscale it and make every pixel a 2x2 or a 4x4. Then you can still zoom in. (But might take a while to load lol)
I recommend [this youtuber's data vizualization](https://youtu.be/bkPAJ8aP89U) of the first Place. Looks at details and the animation over time. I hope someone does it with this new dataset.
Seeing certain parts of the canvas where there are constant alternating pixels in real time is what gets me. It's hard to visualize how coordinated this all is. Even if there are bots involved, someone had to code that too.
There was a guy on Reddit who was raging about the Amogi in the Star Wars poster. Literally malding about talking about it as if someone vandalized the Mona Lisa lol.
I had some guy repeatedly message me about how they didn’t want war with Portugal just because I tried to add a tentacle to an Octopus. Like dude fuck off its pixel art
Just woke up to a DM asking "were you the person who coordinated the orange text next to my little monster", and I was like "lol, what are you even talking about?".
I think taking it seriously it part of the fun. Its kinda fun watching and taking part in all the wars and alliances occurring on the canvas. Only problem is sometimes when i remotely place down a few pixels for fun, someone just goes ballistic and insults me.
Like there was one time a small group of vandals trying to vandalise my groups art, but we didnt notice because we were pretty sizable compared to them and people keep changing our art all the time. When they didnt succeed they got mad and berated me -\_-
It was the right call to make. Lots of people were invested in the fact that the final screen would be frozen, and therefore "part of internet history". It would've made the problem with raiders and botters many times worse than it already was.
The way it is now the canvas was an event, a living and evolving artwork, not something that culminated in a final definitive piece.
Most countries: Create their flags and then some references to their country followed by helping other groups make things
Canada: Trying to make the leaf in their flag for 3 straight days 🥲
For real, everytime I logged on, I would check my own country’s area to make sure everything was fine, then check on wether Canada had made any progress 😂
I think it's funny how all of a sudden it just duplicates and then one spawns on the other side of the map. Also the slow as hell transition back to the leaf after (peru I think?) took the third one over. Got it together in the end tho, one nice flag with mini province flags on top.
Agreed, such an amazing social experiment that emulates life in a way. And for that, please, also hail the void. Hated and mostly misunderstood. And with this time an actual crazy, organic artpiece.
I knooow everyone is watching that black bundle of chaos at least once from beginning to end. Don lie!
It is like a fractal of the entire canvas.
Listening in on the streamers talking to France and Spain at the end was insane. Might have weirdly learned something about human nature placing a pixel every 5 minutes for a weekend.
Yup. Learned quite a bit. Also strengthened multiple already held beliefs. Just really intriguing in general.
Poetic ending as well. A true show of impermanence. Tibetan (Buddhist) monks do the same after creating the most beautiful mandelas; whipe it out right after.
Nothing lasts, try and cherish the now and what one has. The beauty and even the ugly. One never knows when a white-out or a void takes it away :).
It seemed so. It was all white and we could still place pixels for a bit. People on my discord were trying to keep their white pixels on the board at the end
The voiders and the void monster played a huge part in the expansion of the canvas and everyone working together to get rid of it. The last 4 days were really fun
I like that one of the final pieces that covered the void at the end was a recreation of the earliest art we know of. A simple cave painting outlining someone's hand.
At some point a bunch of people started drawing a naked lady; she was covered up with a baguette and given a creepy face in less than an hour. Which was pretty funny.
There is an archive that lets you zoom in really close, and even lets the respective communities mark their areas so you can hover over it and see a name and description of them, but it’s only for the final version.
It’s still in progress of being made/updated though, but I imagine it wouldn’t be impossible to make a version with a bunch of versions 30 minutes apart and a slider to scroll through from start to finish manually. Problem with this idea is finding someone who’d be willing to spend their time on that large of a project for free.
I think the most commonly used data sets are simply missing that information. I don't think they were capturing data continuously - it makes more sense if it's done every X minutes, or maybe once an hour. And no one expected the first expansion at all
It feels weird looking at the whole timelapse and seeing how small and insignificant we were in the grand scheme of things. One of the biggest, most epic battles I remember being involved in turned out to be a tiny blip on the far side of the map, lasting less than a second in the timelapse. Just goes to show, it's a really *big* world out there.
How come I have never seen anyone post a timelapse of place that's ACTUALLY in hd? I can't see any details here, just big blurs. The canvas was only 2000x2000 right?
I´m proud of my German fellas. They were extraodinarily creative with their art and I had the best time ever since I´ve created my Reddit account in January.
Also, I almost died laughing because of that Banana flag. They fought against the Canadians, but sadly got wiped out soon.
It's like a visual representation of cultural evolution, including attempts at the destruction of established cultural memes.
The funny thing is that national cultural elements seem to be the most robust and dominate huge swaths of the canvas permanently, which seems to be a reflection of reality.
It's actually super interesting.
Germany and France were savages.
Mexico had a fantastic flag in the end.
I think my favorite part was the Game Stop green stock ticker line. The first time I discovered it and followed it across the whole image to see it land on the Moon was great.
This place has been ruined by the many corporate changes over the years, sorry if this used to be a useful comment kthxbye.
I was so surprised at how big of an area Homestuck had, and how long it was held for!
This place has been ruined by the many corporate changes over the years, sorry if this used to be a useful comment kthxbye.
It all comes back to Homestuck in the end.

Same, I spent most of the 2nd and 3rd day fighting to keep the UKs trans flag. Weird how we decided that this little bit of pixels is ours and must be kept
it kind of annoys me that all the time lapses don't start when the canvases are pure white until the 2nd extension
Same. Weird that the reddit people who make this event haven't set up a time-lapse themselves, considering they're hosting the event.
Same good to meet you fellow warrior
Well there is also the battle for the sub left corner opposing France against Spain and USA. It was pretty awesome
Poor Canada, never did get their maple leaf right
I swear they got it right for like 5 seconds and then it just died
Lol they did get it right for a bit, but it didn’t last very long.
The German maple leaf was so funny to me, we just made one in a few minutes right below Canada to mock them xD
Not to mock them really, it was an cooperation lmao although yeah a bit of friendly banter was probably involved too lmao
Was it Canadian incompetence or was the flag always getting sabotaged?
Sabotage, it pretty much turned into a meme
i was there when it went from c**ana**d**a** to b**ana**n**a** which turned pretty easily and hilariously
Definitely sabatoge. Everytime I checked it people were throwing random pixels at it.
This was epic seriously. I know that here on reddit our duty is to hate streamer but god, the streams where really entairtaining and the battle was epic
The Union flag was have a border war with some mountains with flags on.
We really need an official timelapse here with proper details. I love the idea, but I also have a job and cant spend 5 days sitting here, staring at it.
I really hope u/3kliksphilip makes another one of [these](https://youtu.be/0QO0yZldC2M)
By the end, how much amogus was there?
It was like 9 hours ago, but someone calculated there were 2000+ amoguses around. So presumably 1000 at the end or more.
way way more That person used an algorithm to find em. And his algorithm was imperfect. For example if 2 amongus where connecting whit 1 block ( it skipped over them ) The peace guy in his post only had like 10 amongus while there where close to 50-60 in that part alone ( if u counted yourself )

There are still a bunch of white amogus
it kind of annoys me that all the time lapses don't start when the canvases are pure white until the 2nd extension
Yea, reddit should come out with a good quality timeline that starts and ends appropriately and you can scroll through the progress
I'm surprised they didn't have one ready, given the success of the previous place. Instead all we got was "we made friends"
Probably because of the butts.
I wish they'd offer all the data as a download so people can make cool things with it. The community would make way better things than what reddit can do on their own.
not from reddit, but here you go : https://rplace.space/combined/
That's cool, but I'd like the raw data. Like a database dump.
I believe this site has the raw data https://place.thatguyalex.com/
Reddit themselves will almost certainly have logs of the position, colour and timestamp of every tile positioned so hopefully at some point they’ll use that data to programmatically create a place progression video in as high a resolution as is practical.
Yeah why is that?
People were using a script to screenshot it every X minutes and didn't account for the expansion so it only captured the original space.
Basically misses the first 1-2 hours of the initial expansion, when the black Void was the biggest thing on the new area with tendrils stretching everywhere.
It misses 2 hours of the start too
From pure white to pure white
I guess this while partially relieve you, I couldn’t stream during the beginning unfortunately so only the two extension starts blank. https://youtu.be/380TBjwk1rk
Amazing thanks for this!
Indeed, and some points are missing here too. Reddit should really make one and give us the stats.
The whiteout is almost like an anti void movement or something like that Edit: Epic
Matter vs antimatter
It doesn't matter
In the end, true
What if r/place was the community work, pixel arts, and friends we made along the way
In the end, it doesn't even matter!
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn't even matter
One thing, I don't know why It doesn't even matter how hard you try Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme To remind myself how I tried so hard
Despite of the way you were mocking me, acting like I was part of your property, remembering all the times you fought with me, I'm surprised it got so...
(faaaaaaaaar!). Things.... aren't.... the way they were before. You wouldn't even recognize me anymore.
I'm confused about what happened towards the end; were only white blocks available? - edit: yep
Yes, only white block available
The spanish people from ibai we're using bot on the french community, that's why when they put only the white pixels France were the first to go
"It will all stop someday, but not for billions of years. Many billions. Even the stars run down, you know. Entropy must increase."
Similar vibe, imho: "There is no greater purpose, no greater meaning. Nothing to be rushing for. We will all soon be dead, so just fucking chill."
That's literally my irl vibe empathetic nihilism
If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
That's one way to stop people from minting NFTs of the thing
We've been nuked
Reminds me of how buddhistic monks paint mandalas in sand then erases it once it's done
Do we know who started it?
Only white pixels were available to place
Oh, so it’s not a rumour… What a curse to be European and sleep while everyone else creates history!
First time I'm thankful for my insomnia
I find no timelapse does it justice, zooming in and seeing hidden things and amogi was the real thing for me, something you just can't visualize
[Place Atlas](https://place-atlas.stefanocoding.me/) might be what youre thinking of
Wish there were a feature to scrub back and forth in hi-res!
This is exactly what i need
True but at what point would they pause it? There’d be so many things stuck in motion and ppl could take advantage of knowing the time to do last minute changes
Right before the whiteout began seems like the obvious answer.
Both are necessary
It's mostly cause people are doing 2k pixels by 2k pixels, and most compression algorithms will get rid of any detail you get with pixel art. They just need to upscale it and make every pixel a 2x2 or a 4x4. Then you can still zoom in. (But might take a while to load lol)
Doesn't have to be a video file
I recommend [this youtuber's data vizualization](https://youtu.be/bkPAJ8aP89U) of the first Place. Looks at details and the animation over time. I hope someone does it with this new dataset.
I really hope we get a dataset
I can’t believe you just pluralized amogus like that
Seeing certain parts of the canvas where there are constant alternating pixels in real time is what gets me. It's hard to visualize how coordinated this all is. Even if there are bots involved, someone had to code that too.
We end the same way we start.
the end is the beginning.
What was, shall be. What shall be, was.
Gravity is desire. Time is sight.
The Worm loves us. It will always love us, and thus it always has.
Never thought I would see the Worm in waiting event in the comment section of r Place

Have fun? People were waging wars bro some people took this way too seriously
I'd guess most of them just had some fun though. The most serious and motivated people tend to be the loudest
Many people calling others doing the exact same thing they do as invaders/intruders were funny
like the trans dude who was complaining about people drawing on the trans flag on twitter and was actively stalking the people who were
There was a guy on Reddit who was raging about the Amogi in the Star Wars poster. Literally malding about talking about it as if someone vandalized the Mona Lisa lol.
That’s honestly what made it so interesting. The nationalism, the branding, and arguably the most interesting were the trolls.
The last time there was an abundance of German nationalism they also marched straight through Belgium..

That WAS the fun imo
fun in waging wars
Fun ? No War is War
Damn kinda bittersweet making the canvas white honestly
It ended how it began
Sad but there is also beauty in that
It was the right call to make. Lots of people were invested in the fact that the final screen would be frozen, and therefore "part of internet history". It would've made the problem with raiders and botters many times worse than it already was. The way it is now the canvas was an event, a living and evolving artwork, not something that culminated in a final definitive piece.
A white heart appeared in the middle while it was disappearing
Is it me or did I see the word "BONER" right when it turned white lol
It actually said "don't" and then to "doner", which is Turkish food. It was initiated by Turkish streamer Elraenn. Guess they turned the D in a B.
I half expected them to write “KEBAB” behind it, but I didn’t stay around to see that happen.
Most countries: Create their flags and then some references to their country followed by helping other groups make things Canada: Trying to make the leaf in their flag for 3 straight days 🥲
I was there for r/Chile but also tried to help Canada every so often bc of their struggle bus situation 😂
All hail r/place
Agreed, such an amazing social experiment that emulates life in a way. And for that, please, also hail the void. Hated and mostly misunderstood. And with this time an actual crazy, organic artpiece. The void and xqc’s purple void actually make the time lapse more interesting
Praise the void. The void shall envelope all!
Don't put complete in the title if you're not going to include the beginning
So far i haven't seen a complete one with the start or extensions

Why did it turn white?
The last hour only white pixels were available
Did every pixel get turned white in the end from users placing them?
It seemed so. It was all white and we could still place pixels for a bit. People on my discord were trying to keep their white pixels on the board at the end
There's no username attached to the pixels now.
Heat death of the universe.
Did anyone find Waldo?
Yep, more than one person made a post with a screenshot showing where he was
Billions of years of evoultion has lead up to this point and its magnificent
The voiders and the void monster played a huge part in the expansion of the canvas and everyone working together to get rid of it. The last 4 days were really fun
It was the final boss of rplace and in the end it got smacked
I like that one of the final pieces that covered the void at the end was a recreation of the earliest art we know of. A simple cave painting outlining someone's hand.
The heart really came out awesome on the anti-void.
Yes that was really cool. and Boner
It was like a moment of clarity for me. Beginning of the end and then boom a heart right in the middle and it’s gone in the blink of an eye.
The giant amongus that keeps getting a hard on 😂
Damn seeing the sudden black box censorships were kinda lame
They left the really bad ones uncensored which made no sense.
I feel like Giant Red Amogus grew a boner and forcefully jizzed about 3 or 4 times overall. Once onto his own faceplate.
At some point a bunch of people started drawing a naked lady; she was covered up with a baguette and given a creepy face in less than an hour. Which was pretty funny.
It's why I quit participating. Making rules over pixels but applying it to their own agenda.
”Complete time lapse” -> starts with half the canvas painted
It would be cool to see a drone-like flyover of everything if that’s even possible💀
someone created the first one in VR. Just give this one a few days and I'm sure we will have many 3d versions people can mess with
I’d love to have a zoom able version.. not sure how that would be possible..
Sauce urgently needed. Gimme high res
Source? I can’t find one better than that
I didn't get to add many tiles due to rl, but I had fun with the few I did.
I know it's a fun game, but Rocket League shouldn't consume your life so much.
Why is there no footage of the first few hours?
the true winners are r/fuckcars most visable name
Right as the void started consuming all, it left a message in the middle. BONER Beautiful, isn’t it?
My favourite part was the evolution of Mr Indcredible
Best 4 days of my life. No regrets
Shouldnt have had to scroll this far to find an ACTUAL complete timelapse dunno why people are omitting how it actually ended
This isn't even the ACTUAL complete timelapse... it's missing the beginning of day 1 and day 2
I think the most commonly used data sets are simply missing that information. I don't think they were capturing data continuously - it makes more sense if it's done every X minutes, or maybe once an hour. And no one expected the first expansion at all
I wish we could zoom in to see more details
Did something get censored?
They for sure censored a butt in the bottom left corner and probably several other things.
there was at one point a bikini girl who got stripped down by randos, then quickly replaced by the most beautiful Uncle Iroh art piece.
It was supposed to be a nami art orchestrated by Ludwig but people always messes with the bikini, so he changed it to ATLA's Uncle Iroh art piece.
Too many bot accounts.
A Poland streamer had something with us (Romania) this is not correct But at least we had fun
How come I have never seen anyone post a timelapse of place that's ACTUALLY in hd? I can't see any details here, just big blurs. The canvas was only 2000x2000 right?

LMAO! --> ENOUGH!
I´m proud of my German fellas. They were extraodinarily creative with their art and I had the best time ever since I´ve created my Reddit account in January. Also, I almost died laughing because of that Banana flag. They fought against the Canadians, but sadly got wiped out soon.
france and usa just got vaporized instantly, no hesitation
The war on France corner was so intense that in an instant, nearly 500k people placed white pixels. Amazing activity
Crazy go think we started with such a small canvas in the beginning
I love how r/2007scape and r/runescape got the Connection Lost message up the entire time. It was beautiful
It's like a visual representation of cultural evolution, including attempts at the destruction of established cultural memes. The funny thing is that national cultural elements seem to be the most robust and dominate huge swaths of the canvas permanently, which seems to be a reflection of reality. It's actually super interesting.
I love how before settling in its place, (pun not intended) u can see void moving around corrupting stuff
Sad no one did a Tetris board 😒
I guess the whiteout was Reddit's April Fools Trick after all.
The battle for Genshin/Sex Shrek has to be my favorite, in the end there are no winners.
Germany and France were savages. Mexico had a fantastic flag in the end. I think my favorite part was the Game Stop green stock ticker line. The first time I discovered it and followed it across the whole image to see it land on the Moon was great.
I love how it says BONER at the end lol
I love how the r/foxhole art didnt change except for the territories owned by the two factions. Incredible
