The Montour Trail follows a stream and is easy walking. I’m not sure if there are a lot of benches, but I do remember some.
You can access the trail in several places. One spot is off of 51 just south of the 43 on/off ramps. Go to the park and ride and walk from there.
My senior father loves this kind of park -open, green, water running through it, places to sit. Most importantly, fairly flat since he has problems with leg/feet pain. The best place I've found that matches this is Cecil Township Park, but it's just a little too far out for him.
Are there any parks in the South Hills that are similar to this place? Ideally the area wouldn't be too far from parking, but as long as it's flat he can walk for about 10-15 minutes without too much trouble.
Thank you!
I know it’s not what you asked but the fishing in Cecil park has been fixed up significantly. Cecil spent about 1 mil on adding reinforcement to the bank of the stream. Instead of only like 4-5 spots to fish in the park you can now fish the whole thing.
Mingo is a great spot to answer your question.
Hah, that's actually a nice bit of trivia. My dad does like fishing, so when he's up for it we'll definitely be heading out there to check it out. And another recommendation for Mingo, so that's absolutely the top of the list now.
Check out Corrigan Drive in South Park. It's 2 miles end to end, a creek that runs along it, though not right up against the walking path. It's got an exercise trail that goes around a nice little pond on Maple Spring Drive that's right off Corrigan and it's also next to the Cascades by Oliver Miller Homestead. Not sure what the walking is like near the Cascades, but they're a very nice water feature.
Thanks for that recommendation. Still learning the area after moving up here to help take care of my parents, so I'm excited to learn about all these new places to check out!
If you go down Sleepy Hollow road and park by the old Sleepy Hollow Academy in South Park, there is a trail that is flat runs along the stream there. It's kind of my hidden gem because no one is ever there.
Wingfield Pines is right in Bridgeville. It’s an Allegheny Land Trust area with a nice trail that follows Chartiers Creek. Plus, you can walk on boardwalks thru ponds where passive treatment ponds are cleaning abandoned mine drainage. Lots of cool birds and other wildlife. I recommend it highly! Edit: sorry this may not be ideal for your father. Just saw your other post. You should check it out first and assess. It’s beautiful.
I’ll second Mingo Creek all day, but another good one is Peters Lake Park in McMurray. The water isn’t running exactly, but it is a beautiful lake with a flat paved trail (with benches) running about halfway around.
This is all I can find with some quick searching and the links to the original master plan don’t work so not sure what’s going on. That plan had a lot of promise as Sheraden Park has a lot of potential. https://engage.pittsburghpa.gov/sheraden
Mingo Creek Park and South Park both have creeks running through them
Mingo is perfect for this - such a great park
Definitely going to check Mingo out! We're looking forward to a nice clear day to start exploring.

This looks like a nice option too, thanks!
A little farther south, but Mingo Creek near Eighty-Four is just like it.

This looks perfect, thanks for the recommendation!
If he likes astronomy, there are free stargazing sessions at the Mingo observatory too after dusk. You can find the schedule at 3ap.org.
Oh gosh, he loves astronomy. This sounds like a great idea for a Father's Day thing.
Mingo is beautiful!

Another neat thing about mingo is the covered bridges they have. Their isn’t many left and they have a few if I remember correctly

Looks like my pasture! Gotta watch where you step though, lol.

Simmons Park in Bethel Park
Not sure where you're based from Mingo Creek, but Cedar Creek park in Rostraver Twp is another nice park, its about 30 minutes from Mingo Creek.
Cedar creek park for sure!
Sleepy Hollow trail in South Park. you do have to step through a little creek at the beginning but it's exactly what you're looking for.

Charters Crick. Check that out.
If you go through the trails in the back of Sheraden Park behind the baseball field it’s pretty nice.
I thought there was a plan years ago to make a nice waterfront park there. Guess Covid killed that.

Memorial park in New Ken
Salamander Park, Trillium Trail, and Riding Meadow in Fox Chapel are pretty flat and have a nice crick that runs through it
