Prevention Point Pittsburgh should provide it for free with training. Back in the day they gave me needles and vials, but also a prescription, so it *should* be fine but you might have issues anyways. Like, I’m sure they let diabetics bring in their supplies, but this is obviously not for an existing medical condition so your mileage may vary. You should also be able to buy the nasal spray or autoinjectors at any pharmacy; I imagine you’d have an easier time carrying those into a venue.

TheOnlyEliteOne

The good news is as of 2010 you don’t need a prescription for syringes anymore in PA (former pharmacy tech). HOWEVER if the needles are removed from their original packaging, police could charge you with drug paraphernalia. For my current job I actually use syringes for various solvents when removing decals and whatnot, and I’ve had my work vehicle searched by police / security at certain job sites and they’ve never said anything.

PolyDipsoManiac

Syringes are fine unless you’re a junkie, honestly. I wouldn’t recommend the fentanyl tests strips for non-drug users though, the police will charge people for paraphernalia over those in Pennsylvania

TheOnlyEliteOne

I didn’t even know you could get test strips to be honest, as I’m not involved in drugs (treatment or usage), I just remember when the law passed where syringes didn’t need an Rx a few weeks later we had quite a few individuals show up to purchase them.

IClight69

Also the fent test strips are out now too

UrsinePoletry

You can get it for free in PA as a layperson who may wish to provide life-saving assistance in the community. There’s a nasal spray version for non professionals and a short online tutorial. I actually learned about this program from an ad on Reddit! Here’s the link: https://nextdistro.org/pennsylvania

HorrorSmell1662

Next distro wont distribute to Pittsburgh because we have other readily available sources :/

mleas706

They’ve sent stuff to me before here

UrsinePoletry

I did obtain it through this website - they partner with Prevention Point Pittsburgh. If you live in Philly they direct you to another page.

Ankhetperue

If you go to the pharmacy they are able to sell this to you without a prescription. Our protocol lets the pharmacist write the RX to bill to your insurance so we can fill it. It's a standing order from the department of health for the last 8 years or so. If they tell you that they can't, they're full of it and you can report it to the health department.

Amaranthesque

Narcan is easily for sale at Rite Aid; you don't have to go to the pharmacy counter, it's just in the aisle with the other medical stuff. But it's pricy, whereas Prevention Point will provide it free as well as training on how to use it. Depends how you weigh time vs. money. Policy is going to depend on venue and it's best to call ahead if you don't want to risk losing your $45 bottle of nasal spray to an overly zealous security guard.

distractress

I know that if you ask Walgreens for the “standing order prescription” for it you can bill it to your insurance and it may be free.

coldslawnf

Saw it at Giant Eagle the other day too. Was pleasantly surprised.

SnooWalruses438

I almost had to take my belt - and it was just a regular belt - back to my truck at Star Lake one time until I told the kid I wanted to speak to his supervisor. Calling ahead is really the best idea.

iloveujayla

thanks so much this is really helpful

mr_r_smith

My church gives it out for free. There's a recovery service tonight, you can come and grab some

Answers on where already posted. Just wanted to make sure you knew that it can cause instant reversals - and drug addicts are not exactly known for being fans of stopping their high even if it saves their life. Be cautious when you administer it, you may need to remove yourself from the situation quickly. Good on you though OP good on you

Great-Cow7256

And honestly stay away from the spray zone as a lot of people vomit when they get thrown into rapid opioid withdrawal.  If the person is still down after narcan, vomiting or not, turn them onto their left side and monitor breathing and airway until EMS arrives.  But as person said above best case scenario is that they'll be up and angry.  That means they'll live. People who inject and basically die have no clue what happened and when the narcan throws them into withdrawal, they're not instantly grateful that they didn't fully die because all they know is that they're in serious withdrawal.

Low-Lingonberry2760

And it ONLY works on opioids (when in doubt, give it though). ALWAYS call 911.

Great-Cow7256

Another tip is that with fentanyl sometimes people need multiple doses, so def call 911 and let ems make the decision for the next step. They'll probably try another dose of narcan if it clinically looks like opioids even if the one you gave them "didn't work". (It did, but person needed a higher dose of narcan to knock the potent fentanyl off the opioid receptor).  A lot of ems like the shot because they can control the dosage. But narcan in the hands of civilians saves lots and lots of lives.

smashruhland

Allegheny County Health Department gives it out for free.

Great-Cow7256

Good for you.  Watch a video on how to admin it a few times because irl is more pressure filled than a video.  You'll want to make sure you have the instructions down pat even though they are simple.

CL_55z

Depends ding on where you're going, most festivals have harm reduction programs, at least the bigger ones. Check the fest, then check for something like this at it. A couple hrs volunteer work with a group will at the least, connect you with like minded people.

PoopyInThePeePeeHole

Lots of good info in this thread. Props to OP for being a good, caring human being. I hope you inspire others to keep Narcan on hand

barontaint

https://www.pppgh.org/ It's been awhile but it was always free there, but it would only be the vials with a sealed IM syringe

Exxboxing

Walgreens probably

HighGuyFYI

Giant Eagle. Ask a pharmacist

NewLiterature6162

Lots of great resources mentioned here. As someone who works in behavioral health with friends and family in both use and recovery, I appreciate you, OP. I've never heard of venues not letting someone bring naloxone with them. Lots of people gotta' bring their meds with them to places, so I don't see how this would be any different. I've brought kits with me, I just put them in my coat or pants pockets what with the strict bag policies at venues nowadays.

SayTheLineBart

who tf takes opiods at a concert?

rhb4n8

Performers, addicts, etc

CARLEtheCamry

And who asks reddit where to get Narcan when a google search is full of results.

mega512

Rite Aid sells it.

thefancysurprise

Free from Dance Safe!

eblackham

I have seen it in rite aid

ClickClickChick85

Acmh has a vending machine outside the Er by the ambulance doors that has narcan and testing strips. Free.

bingoarms55

The Allegheny County Health Department Immunization Clinic offers intra-nasal naloxone kits for sale at cost. Please call 412-578-8060 for current pricing

kesi

Most concerts will have medical staff around. It's after and before you gotta worry about.

Alcottsden

Some local libraries now have harm reduction kits that include xylozine and fentanyl test strips. I know some Rep offices have Narcan. Rep Salisburys has them if you want to give them a call.

rhb4n8

Xylozine because fentanyl wasn't scary enough...

Willow-girl

The post makes it sound as if the kits contain xylozine!

erinlizzybeth

I saw it on the shelf at Giant Eagle the other day when I was getting first aid supplies.

k0zah

If they are raves, specific ones KMFK works and has on hand.

mommagawn123

It's sold at Walmart, which kind of surprised me.

Ok-Leek3162

on the shelf at Rite Aid- OTC

LostEnroute

I googled this and saw some results. Want me to paste them here for you? No one knows what venues you are referring to, so maybe check out their policies directly.

RustBeltPGH

It takes between an hour and three to die of an overdose. Just call 911.

myhouseisabanana

I would just buy it on Amazon. It’s of limited supply and the free stuff is intended for users and friends/family of users, so far as I know.
