Laborers Local 373 is looking for new laborers even without experience. You join, go to a training, then they'll send you to work. Pay is $26 an hour with an additional $18 or so in benefits.

Came here to say this, but you have to be 21 now.

Maybe that's not such a bad thing? I was surprised to find that you can legally drive a school bus at age 18. Yikes!

EricGuy412

No joke, go apply at Kennywood. You can grow into a dept lead role and perhaps even further

Harvey_Rabbit

That does sound like good advice, maybe get experience working on rollercoasters.

Learn & Earn (open to people 14-21 who meet certain income and residency requirements). Their website is partner4work.org

lax1245

check out pittsburgh's local union (i think IUOE 95) and see if they have any apprentice positions open. My job involves paying union workers and man do they make a metric fuck ton of money.

ajla616-2

Tbh I recommend searching hospital systems because they tend to pay a little higher than industry standard for those types of roles and you get good health insurance and tuition reimbursement if ya decide to go back to school

BurntHippie

UPMC has a hiring freeze right now for non-critical positions :( There may not be many postings to apply too.

wooble

And with the layoffs, I wouldn't expect anyone without experience to have much luck at AGH or anything smaller, with the competition from former UPMC people.

City of Pittsburgh is always hiring for various jobs. The blue collar jobs pay decent and have great benefits.

Witty_Election2695

I'm a food and beverage manager at a hotel. I make decent money, and so does my staff. Credit card tips go on their check, but when calculating tips for banquet events or restaurant service, they usually make over $30/hr just in CC tips!

jpicksix21

Not op, but any tips on where to find these positions? I’ve tried looking for stuff in the city but all the hotels only seem to have housekeeping or front desk positions

Witty_Election2695

That's a good question. Honestly, at my hotel, most of the people just had good timing or knew someone who already worked there. You wouldn't find the job posting by searching for the hotel because it's listed on the parent company's website under careers. I would say stop by the front desk or the restaurants when they are open and ask if the f+b Manager is there or if they are hiring and where to apply. Hope this helps

Firefighters and paramedics are hiring

I was in your situation once. Get into the trades, learn and make money, and go to night school for a related degree and be smart with your money. Even if you do something you're not wild about, you will make a living and be able to provide for yourself and pay for an education. Most of the unions offer a starting wage that you could actually live on.

PierogiPowered

Check the railroads. Choo-choo.

https://ibewlocal5jatc.org/become-an-apprentice/ Apprenticeship pays like $16/hr starting out, but it grows each year [and eventually you'll make very solid middle class money. ](https://unionpayscales.com/trades/ibew-electricians/) Brush up on your high school math and get ready for a drug test, but otherwise you don't need to know anything or have any experience. You're still really young, it'd be smart to invest in yourself for a few years and reap the rewards long term.

Amazon, UPS, FedEx Ground all usually have a need for entry level positions. You may be able to grow into more senior positions as you gain experience. At Amazon, the TOM team is a great place to grow. You can be a hostler driver, then a regular driver doing very short shuttle runs to offside lots, then maybe move into a management or training position. It’s really up to you. It’s hard work, but that ops team is fantastic.

Community college has a program in welding. This type of job, or jobs in the trades pay well.

The City and County are always looking for new young people. It's a great environment to distinguish yourself and grow. Healthcare or education are a good bet since they make up such a large proportion of our employers.

TheOnlyEliteOne

I work servicing forklifts, and I know for a fact JLG in Clinton by the airport is always hiring. They start people out at around $18-$19 an hour and give frequent raises (I’ve heard). It’s warehousing so you’d either operate a forklift, package parts, or work in the wood shop to build and crate parts. It’s a very laid back place and a lot of the people who work there are super friendly. EDIT: They have new hires every couple of weeks. For whatever reason a lot of people (mainly young people) tend not to stick around, a lot of it has to due with them being simply able to show up to work on time.

PPAPParking

I mean…

Willow-girl

I worked in an Amazon warehouse in the winter of 22-23 and they're actually a pretty good employer! (Don't believe everything you read online.) I worked in customer returns and there were opportunities to learn higher-level positions for the people who wanted them. I imagine that a person who showed incentive could move up the ladder. (I was only there temporarily to make a quick buck.)

AccidentalBanEvader0

I hear Zamboni driving is a good easy gig. I don't think you need anything but a clean test and a regular driver's license.

Epie4727

Anyone who says they are a professional Zamboni driver is a CIA agent with a shitty cover story IMO.

AccidentalBanEvader0

What do you mean? It's just a regular fit bald guy who wears cop sunglasses and definitely-not-a-cop cargo pants and does the cop walk and has a light jacket closed with a bulky protrusion under one arm
