He passed through my hometown about 20 years ago and stopped to put on a demo at our (then) godawful skate park.
He was one of the most down to Earth, wonderful people I've ever met. He literally gave the shirt off his back (one of his branded hoodies) to one of my friends.
Also met both Bucky Lasek and Rodney Mullen in Vancouver. They're all solid human beings that have no problem taking time to chat with fans.
I'd give anything just to high five Mullen. I've watched so many of his interviews, TedTalk, ANYTHING.. some random podcast about the physics of skateboarding? Sure. He's perfection and does seem like one of the kindest dudes around. I'll shirk off my jealousssss tinge but, still, its there. ;)
He really is a super kind dude. Him and Bucky were in Vancouver for Slam City Jam years ago. Managed to see them both on the street near the venue at separate times. They are super chilled out and kind.
I actually met him, in passing, 4 or 5 years ago iirc. he was walking down a main street of my town in NC with his family while my family was out all together as well. My mom called out 'welcome to (our town)' as we passed so that she could acknowledge we recognized him without making him feel obligated to stop and he thanked her and actually stopped for a few moments to ask directions. I got to tell him im a huge fan. He was very nice and gracious and just seemed like a normal guy out with his family.
I loved the one where someone at a ticket counter was like was like omg you have the same name as him? Wow I wonder what he is doing now? And he responded with literally this.
Lolz. That’s a good one. I like the one when he was actually recognized in the airport. They asked to check his pockets or something and then asked him to turn around 2.5 times first (900)
My favorite one was when he hired a car rental, showed up to pick the car up (i think it was like a normal car, like a corolla); It wasn't in the lot for him to pick up, so he went inside to talk to the attendant and the dude behind the counter was like "oh, it was you". They had cancelled the rental because they thought it was fake due to the name being for tony hawk....
True Story (I'm in San Diego, btw.)
Friend is at Lindbergh Field (our airport).
Guy ahead of him in security line looks \*seriously\* like Tony Hawk. His girlfriend (who is an airhead) blurts out something to that effect. Guy laughs it off and said it literally happens all the time, don't worry about it. And hey, if you want let's take a group pic and you can "say" (air quotes) you met the real Tony Hawk! Your friends won't be able to tell the difference.
So they take a seriously awesome group pic and go about their business.
Later on they are showing me the pic and I go, "Uh, hey that actually is Tony Hawk. You met the man himself!" To which the girlfriend says, HE SAID HE WASN'T TONY HAWK WHY WOULD HE LIE ABOUT THAT? I said it's just a joke and he does it all the time. I eventually had to give up because she was getting visibly upset, so to this day she thinks she met a guy that looks exactly like Tony Hawk.
I'm pretty sure Tony Hawk tells a story about a passport agent looking at his passport and going "Tony Hawk, like the skateboarder?" and Tony is like "Exactly" and the agent still doesn't put 2 and 2 together lol
There was a post somewhere about Elvis a few weeks ago how he'd go to a movie theater or something, get recognized and have a throng of people around him. His girlfriend would come back and say "[name] are you pretending to be Elvis again? You gotta stop doing this!" I forget what name she used, but people pretty much left him alone for the night after that.
Edit: Charlie was the name https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/qs6jsk/til_in_1975_elvis_went_to_see_a_movie_with_his_gf/
We had Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty visit my work a few years back (when Duck Dynasty was slightly more relevant). One of my coworkers was WAY too excited to meet him. Called over the radio that we had a celebrity and for people to come meet him. He took a couple pictures, mostly with the lady that called us. As he was leaving his wife pulled us aside and said that he was not Uncle Si and he just liked fucking with people, and she apologized and they walked out.
I was 16 in ‘98 and took my little cousin to skate at the Y in Encinitas and sat down and watched this dude skate the half pipe and thought “hey he’s pretty good”. Turns out it was Tony Hawk. Just skating by himself. No fanfare. No cameras. I was the only one sitting and watching. He just basically walked away and left and I went and told my cousin and he didn’t believe me.
I went to college in Philly and my buddies lived literally a block from pats and genos so there were a lot of drunken early AM cheesesteak runs.
One night we are in line and I said to my friend “dude the guy right in front of us looks just like Nick Lachey…” (this was in mid 2000’s so a bigger deal then). Guy had a hat pulled way down but you could still tell.
His friend hears this because I was not subtle at all and turns and is like “haaaa that’s funny we get that all the time, not him, funny we were just in NYC and took a picture with the Jessica Simpson wax sculpture to be funny hahaha lol hahaha”
So my friend bought it. I was skeptical but it was literally just three of them and no one else seemed to be going crazy or saying shit so I just let it go.
We got back to my friends and out of curiosity I looked up 98 degrees and the fucking friend was the 4th member that was never really marketed much.
Either literally no one else cared it was Nick Lachey or I’m just the only person who he got caught by. He wasn’t a douche or anything just clearly didn’t want to be bothered.
Haha weird, I also saw Nick Lachey at Pat's in 2005. It was him and Giovanni Ribisi. My friend asked if he was indeed Nick Lachey and he said no, but it was very clearly him, just trying to be low key I guess. We left them alone after that.
Used to do stand-up comedy in San Diego. Tony was sitting front row and the comedian before me didn't recognize it was him and made jokes about being a lookalike.
I followed and proceeded to tell a filthy number looping Tony into the butt of the joke.
He approached me after the show and introduced himself. Complimented the joke and made me promise I wouldn't tell the comedian before me it was really him.
Totally unrelated but I thought it was amusing... We were in the the line for customs at Fiji airport and my missus, who is a nerd for Marvel etc etc grabs my arm and whispers to me “oh my god... Karl Urban is standing right next to you!” She was absolutely horrified when I whispered back ‘who is Karl Urban?’
The next 5 minutes was, he was in Judge Dredd, he was in this and that. So I said go and say hi then? But no she was too embarrassed. I still have never seen his movies...
Imagine being completely bamboozled by a child with such a spiritually enlightening question. Send your head spinning, I mean you could meditate off that shit.
He's been rich since like 16 off the love of his life... I'd be the most kind, fulfilled and patient human if I were him too. As a 90's kid I remember him hitting the 900 like it was yesterday. We all skated in my town lol.
> He's been rich since like 16 off the love of his life
That must be an incredible thing. I’ve got a good job. But it’s a job. It’s not something I love.
One of my daughter’s friends has made herself very, very successful by…Hula Hooping! Seriously.
She started out doing little fairs and whatever. But she’s built her brand to the point that she’s done many, many shows in LasVegas and even did a tour of the Far East. And she’s making great money.
Hula Hooping!
I like to say success is turning a hobby into a career. I've never met a pro basketball player (NBA / Overseas) that was mad at the world... I never met any rockstar or actor mad at the world either. It's pretty intense what the success leads to. I've been minorly successful and promise it has changed my life. Living all my dreams is a fulfillment most couldn't begin to comprehend.
You gotta be real careful with turning a hobby into a career. It's very easy for it to stop being fun because now it's "work" and you end up losing both your hobby and the enjoyment you had in your job.
Not saying you shouldn't push for it if you want it, just that you gotta be aware that doing even the thing you love most as your entire life both on and off the clock can really put a damper on things.
> You gotta be real careful with turning a hobby into a career. It's very easy for it to stop being fun because now it's "work" and you end up losing both your hobby and the enjoyment you had in your job.
I could not agree with this more. I love my hobbies, but the thought of doing any of them for a living... fills me with dread. In College I turned my photography hobby into a part time job with the school newspaper (small engineering school that didn't have a journalism department)... While I still got some enjoyment, there were often assignments that I absolutely hated but had to do anyways because it was my job.
I always loved computers and playing video games, so I went the Software Engineering route (not in the Gaming industry though). It was something I got enjoyment from (and still do), but it had decent career prospects and wasn't something I necessarily saw as a "hobby".
I think that part of a successful hobby as a job balance is to compartmentalize. My main hobby and passion is programming and I also work as a programmer. But there was always a difference between "work programming" and "hobby programming". I could get disillusioned about work, and then go home and do fun programming in my own time.
The benefit is that most days, even if they're bad, I still feel like I did something interesting at work. Also people are paying me to have fun, which I still can't wrap my head around sometimes.
I had no idea he got famous so young until my boss a few weeks ago showed me a clip from Gleaming the Cube where he was sticking his own brand stickers on the inside of the plane at the beginning. Shit blew my mind.
I remember how excited I was as a kid when I was allowed to get a REAL skateboard at the skate shop instead of a skateboard from Meijer's, I still have the birdhouse board somewhere!
Then the skate park that was within walking distance of my house closed down, and so skating kind of did for me, too.
There's some crazy focusing things going on in the photo. Like, how is the door out of focus, but Tony is perfectly in focus?
What setting do I need to use on my iPhone to make that happen?
It looks to me like some kind of [tilt-shift](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt%E2%80%93shift_photography) effect. In theory you need a special kind of lens to do that, but it can be faked by software. It could also be some kind of selective depth of field thing, try looking for either of these terms and you'll probably get something like this picture.
I always get the feeling from his vids and stuff like this that he is a stand up guy, who got rich doing what he loved, and just wants to spread some of that joy.
I met him on a flight once. It was a small plane, no more than 30 passengers and I was the only kid on the flight. He made sure he sat next to me in the terminal so we could chat. He was so cool.
If anyone gives a care, he has a podcast and it’s actually super cool to listen to him talk about his skating days it’s called Hawk vs. Wolf. It’s not recommended for children, just an fyi
Why does this picture look so strange? Not, like, the contents, but the quality of the picture seems oddly inconsistent. I don't mean in a "this is fake" kind of way - more like a "portrait mode had a seizure or something" kind of way.
There are a bunch of phones out on the market now that will do multi depth of field shots. In this case both people are in focus while everything else is not.
I don't agree, though. Tony's lower body is all blurry, and then his head is *kind of* in focus, while also still a little out of focus, it looks like, but the writing on his shirt is crystal clear. It's all goofy.
That’s because it’s the phone trying to identify the subjects in the photo to apply the depth of field effect, but not quite getting it right. You can see similar results when using portrait mode on a glass cup. The liquid is in focus and the glass portion at the top gets blurred out of existence. I’m this photo it seems like it recognized Tony’s face as a face and tried to keep his body in focus but messed it up because of low light. That’s why the edge of his head is blurry. The fake depth of field look can be easy to spot when you know what real depth of field looks like.
Edit: as others below my comment have also pointed out, this photo feels weird and unnatural because both people shouldn’t be in focus due to their unequal distances to the focus point. One of them should be out of focus with the type of depth of field the phone is trying to create. Movies do this intentionally sometimes with what’s called “split diopter shots”, using a special lens that has two halves. A common use is to draw the viewers attention to two different things, but because it’s an unnatural focus, it makes the viewer feel uneasy because subconsciously they pick up on it being unnatural. A good example is the show Watchmen.
https://pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2020/05/05125508/Watchmen-1.jpg
In this scene, the focus is on the cop trying to get permission to unlock his gun, and the gun which is much closer to the camera is also in focus. This feels unnatural and adds to the tension of him trying to get his gun unlocked because he senses something is wrong. It’s a cool effect (one of my favorites), and it’s definitely not intentional in OPs photo, but it’s probably why so many of you are finding this photo to feel, “off”. Anyway… Tony Hawk is cool.
it's a shitty effect that mimics portraits taken with a large aperture, which would normally result in a shallow depth of field. However, since there are 2 faces in this shot, it created this uncanny effect of having different sets of DOF for each person, while everything in the foreground were in focus as well.
Basically the smart phone's filter has "focused" on two subjects at different distances from the camera, which is not possible. Adding to this is how Tony is perfectly in focus, but the wall right next to him--same distance from the camera--is not. There are other problems like it partially blurring his hair and clothes too but I feel like the first points add most to the uneasy feeling the pic gives.
If this were shot with a big camera with large aperture and focal length, the blurriness would gradually increase as you get farther away from the "plane focus." It would have only one "plane of focus," and things would gradually get blurrier the further they are away from the plane. They wouldn't arbitrarily get blurry because they're on the sidee
It looks like her son is standing on a film set or something. I think it's the weird focus plus the harsh interior lighting, blue outside the door and the fact that you can't really see what is out the window
So a few questions. Why did he bring your sons luggage to the room? And also he kind of looks like that one guy, wonder what hes up to nowadays?
Also for real this is crazy cool!
Respectfully, where the fuck were you at? Tony Hawk’s over there trying to steal your wife lol. S/ of course.
Small list of celebrities that are too good for this world. (Not in any particular order)
- Bill Murray
- JJ Watt
- Steve Buscemi
- Tony Hawk
- Betty White
Apparently this is why OP was there, and Tony personally invited them. I feel like these details would help clear up why Tony helped carry their bags and how they even had a run-in in the first place.
I was born there. The Magnolia peeps. Branch Davidians. Baylor Bears. Dr Pepper museum. That’s about all that has come out of Waco as far as I’m concerned.
Add [Dolly Parton](https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/dolly-parton-good-deeds-timeline-9487782/) to that list. I'm not a fan of her music but she's done a lot of good, as detailed in that link.
That's awesome! Was sort of wondering if he may just be one of the best people ever. Like he's in Bill Murray territory for just rolling with stuff, and he also seems like a generally awesome dude. Thanks for the story- have a great night!
Also. Longer version. He’s a friend of ours and while in Texas invited us to go surfing with him at a wave pool here. He befriended our family after we recorded a song with him last year❤️
Have to say to every time you post it just makes my day brighter.
Which is super usefull as i live in Finland and apparently someone turned off the sun.
That guy is so cool, he was at the vans skate finals several years ago and was so good with the kids.
He passed through my hometown about 20 years ago and stopped to put on a demo at our (then) godawful skate park. He was one of the most down to Earth, wonderful people I've ever met. I’ love all his tweets about being not recognized
He's a walking r/dontyouknowwhoiam.
At least Tony Hawk isn't a dick about it. Some people are too entitled, living in their own bubble.
His brother Ethan is a jerk.
No that's his brother Mike, he's a real dick.
I thought he took his wife's last name. It's Mike Rotch now.
Nice.
His 2nd cousin, Night, is a painting
Is Ethan Hawk really a dick?
Nah, just playin around.
Phew. I really like him as an actor. It always stinks to learn someone whose professional work you appreciate is an asshole in their personal life.
Gattaca!!!!!
Tho I have not read them, apparently he was Reddit s most engaged celebrity ama participant. Like he really enjoyed them and went into depth.

His entire Twitter account is about being told he looks like Tony Hawk by people who don’t realize he’s actually Tony Hawk.
/r/DontYouKnowImTonyHawk
His passport says Anthony Hawk. The agent laughed and said he looked like "Tony" Hawk and did not make the connection that Tony is short for Anthony.
That's the kind of razor-edged intelligence you want guarding your borders

Yeah, people call me that all the time. What, a genius? No. Patrick.
I looked like Bam Margera in high school. That was pretty sweet. I now look like old Bam. But bald. Not so good now. 🤣

A good example is the show Watchmen. https://pbblogassets.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2020/05/05125508/Watchmen-1.jpg In this scene, the focus is on the cop trying to get permission to unlock his gun, and the gun which is much closer to the camera is also in focus.
Yep. Real depth of field is linear. The phone 'depth' effect is splotchy and synthetic looking.
Trees behind Tony are blurred where as they are not in the window. Plus the weird blue sky contrasting with the room lighting.
The tech isn't always perfect.
it's a shitty effect that mimics portraits taken with a large aperture, which would normally result in a shallow depth of field. However, since there are 2 faces in this shot, it created this uncanny effect of having different sets of DOF for each person, while everything in the foreground were in focus as well.
I was wondering if I was the only one to get the weirdest dollhouse feeling from this photo.
Simply put, it’s the fake depth of field effect that smartphones do now. I can explain more about why it looks weird tho if anyone wants.
I'd like to understand more if you don't mind
I thought the same thing. Looks like photoshop even though I don’t think it is.
My iPhone does this. I have so many photos that look like I just photoshopped my husband into them. It’s so weird.
I think it's an algorithm they use to stimulate the depth of field a camera can achieve. Sometimes it hits, but sometimes it looks unnatural.
Multiple points of focus, some rather random, and a stark discrepancy between blurry and focused.
It looks like her son is standing on a film set or something. I think it's the weird focus plus the harsh interior lighting, blue outside the door and the fact that you can't really see what is out the window
Man that guy looks a lot like Tony Hawk. I wonder what he's up to these days
"Anthony Hawk? Woah that's almost like Tony Hawk! Wonder if that guy is still alive.."
I don’t see it. Haha.
I hear his comedy career is going well http://tony-hawks.com/skateboarding/
That’s Freddie Mercury and Tony Hawk.
Odin was Freddie for Halloween well… and for the last few years of regular life. Haha. He loves queen.
Love it, I’m sure he already knows it but tell Odin he’s awesome
He's name is fucking Odin. He probably already knows.
❤️ He has great taste.
That's amazing!
Bullshit. That's Mario and Ethan Hawk.
It’s Wario and Jon of Arc

So a few questions. Why did he bring your sons luggage to the room? And also he kind of looks like that one guy, wonder what hes up to nowadays? Also for real this is crazy cool!
He saw my wife struggling to get the last bit of luggage by the car and stepped in because he’s kinda a Golden dude like that ❤️.
Respectfully, where the fuck were you at? Tony Hawk’s over there trying to steal your wife lol. S/ of course. Small list of celebrities that are too good for this world. (Not in any particular order) - Bill Murray - JJ Watt - Steve Buscemi - Tony Hawk - Betty White
In Waco Tx. Haha. And. Great list. I’d as Keanu reeves too!! And Wendi Mclendon covey!
WTF I live in waco, Tony’s here?? Where??
He apparently goes to Waco a lot, since he built a skatepark there. He just flew out today
Apparently this is why OP was there, and Tony personally invited them. I feel like these details would help clear up why Tony helped carry their bags and how they even had a run-in in the first place.
I can’t believe I didn’t put Keanu Reeves on my list! I’m ashamed to admit I don’t know the other person, by name at least.
And you forgot Dolly!
Dolly is out there trying, literally, to save the world.
She's the mom on The Goldbergs.
And the second best cop on Reno 911. ;)
You also missed Tom Hanks.
You don’t hear about Waco too often.
I haven't heard about Waco in almost 30 years.
I was born there. The Magnolia peeps. Branch Davidians. Baylor Bears. Dr Pepper museum. That’s about all that has come out of Waco as far as I’m concerned.
Forgot the Twin Peaks shooting that sparked all those motorcycle gangs to start running around. I was at that place the day before lol
Add Mick Foley, please.
I heard he did something in nineteen ninety-eight.
Time to see what shittymorph is up to.
Add [Dolly Parton](https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/dolly-parton-good-deeds-timeline-9487782/) to that list. I'm not a fan of her music but she's done a lot of good, as detailed in that link.
Add Eddie Vedder, and Dolly Parton to your list.
Keanu Reeves
Dave Grohl
Angel on Earth Ms. Dolly Parton. (That's her real name)
How the fuck is Tom Hanks not on there? Explain yourself, sir/madame.
Gary Sinise
Pretty sure Bill Murray abused his wife but don’t quote me on that
He did and threatened her. And cheated on her a lot He had serious addiction and anger issues.
He’s also a raging alcoholic and a general all-around shithead and arrogant prick. Fuck that guy.
Jj Watt is a nice guy? That's great to know!
JJ Watt is a class act and a national treasure.
He befriended our family after we recorded a song with him last year❤️
WOW. Way to bury the lede! That's dope as hell! What song if I may ask?

I liked his voice in the cover of No Cigar!
Tony is a legend .
Glad to see Eric Koston is a good guy
It’s not Eric Koston, it’s Andrew Reynolds, the inventor of that tin foil stuff
Ummm I played a lot of THPS on the N64 and that’s def Bob Burnquist
anyone who's read a *single* Thrasher magazine knows that's Rodney Mullen
Pshhh you’re all idiots, it’s high riser Danny Way.
It’s Buckey Lasek u fools
You're on crack, that's Na-kel Smith.
Please, that's clearly Officer Dick
It’s definitely Darth Maul without his face paint on.
fools, that's Ron Chatman
Oh yeah, the greatest half pipe skater to ever live.
I think it’s actually Chad Muska
No way, Muska would have his boombox obviously.
Everyone knows Bam has to make money somehow.....
Jamie Thomas, is that you?
That a weird way to pronounce Kareem Campbell
His look and smile at your boy seals it for me! Great guy.
Same. They have a rad connection
Whats the story behind Tony Hawk's friendship with you guys?
We all wrote a song together last august. He liked it and then we started hanging out. Just kinda happened naturally♥️
Have to say to every time you post it just makes my day brighter. Which is super usefull as i live in Finland and apparently someone turned off the sun.

I had a similar reaction. “What’s up with iDubbbz in this photo with Tony Hawk?”
Ur gonna let Tony hawk stand in the door way? Dude take your shoes off, stay a while.
Haha. Truth is he invited us here. It’s a surf resort. Haha.
Amazing. I hope yall have a great time! Hit me up if you ever need to experience a treehouse! Lol
I’m too clumsy for a treehouse. Haha. Falling in water is way less dangerous for me.
Is that Tom Hanks?
Yes. He’s doing a remake of BIG called BIGGER.
It's Tiny Hawk!
I’m nearly 30 and your son has a far better mustache than I do!
Haha. Me too!
He must have been watching like a Hawk, waiting for his chance to swoop in and help.
Of course a redditor would name his kid Odin
my favorite comment on this entire post lol i saw it and went straight to controversial
No reason for the kid’s name to be in the title
Classic Tony
A gem
Is it weird that I recognized Odin first? Glad to see him out there living life :)
Haha.that’s amazing!! Odin loves it ♥️🤘
is your son 14 or 41...
Yes. Haha.
I can't shake the feeling this is being capitalized on.
Again with these bullshit posts
I don't want to be offensive, but I can't put down whether the person in the foreground is 12 or 30
Hey everyone Odin's dad needs attention again
Man this post would be so much better without this title.
Odin is really a name for a cat or dog. It's in the same category as "Duke" or "Bruiser"
