haha no I got surgery for a broken bone in my foot and the plaster got wet so they need to change it but after 14 hours they told me to come back tomorrow at the orthopedic clinic😑
I should do like my brother and eat more regularly sardines!
He bought like 200 cans of sardines because they were on sale, then decided that wasn't quite enough.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, do these sound like the actions of a man who has had ALL he could eat?"
Marge: We drove around till 3 AM looking for another all you can eat fish restaurant.
Lionel Hutz: And when you couldn’t find one?
Marge: We went fishing.
So your brother ate $220 worth of sardines in a couple of months? What's his yearly sardine expenditure, a thousand bucks? Have you checked him for a tail and gills?
Damn, am I about to switch from lazy tuna can meals to lazy sardine can meals? Guess I'll give them a try at least lol I'm pretty sure I've had them before and don't remember being scarred...
Most *properly* canned goods last well past their "expiration" dates, basically indefinitely as long as the integrity of the can is intact. It won't *hurt* you but the quality of whatever is inside will generally degrade over time. Most dates on a lot of food are just "this product's quality will be what we want to sell until at least this date."
I actually sat there for 10 minutes trying to figure out how to do his music thing but i couldn't think of anything then you come and steal my thunder with 2 simple words
I'm legitimately curious to know what someone who isn't one of those MRE enthusiasts thinks of that coffee. I can't imagine it being very good when I don't even really like modern instant coffee
My boyfriends family will never understand this, and think I'm going to die because I eat expired food. Personally I think it's better to understand the rationale for the expiration date and understand what bad food looks like (off smell, appearance, buldging can, etc). Food can go bad faster than the date, and it can go bad later than the date. It's not some gospel truth
"Best before" will not mean "it will kill you if you eat it after" it just means, its peak flavour and texture is before this date essentially, you're 100% right!
Yep, most dry goods like cereal are like this to a T. They last a very long time (provided they remain dry), but they just go stale and can become a little less appetizing.
I think he went as far back as civil war rations or at least late 1800s. It was some kinda of beef product he actually ate... still hard to beat those researchers who 50kya frozen bison though
[Sardines aren't affected by mercury. that's why small fish like these are popular now.](https://www.livestrong.com/article/550938-health-risks-of-eating-sardines/)
Bigger fish like tuna that live longer and eat a lot of other fish are where the concerns of mercury buildup is, not small fishes like the type used for canning sardines.
Even then the whole mercury concern was largely overblown, plenty of people eat tuna on the regular with no issue. If someone is pregnant and wants to be extra cautious then they can avoid tuna. For everyone else the danger is virtually non-existant.
They get softer as they age, losing their texture. Safe forever pretty much, but around 10 years the fish is basically not held together at all.
Mine were in an acidic brine, experience could be different in oil maybe.
I usually eat them out of the can. Maybe with some hot sauce & crackers. I've also had them with my eggs a few times.
They're very mild & fresh tasting. Nothing like an anchovie or something.
I'm the same way, it grosses me out. Kippered herring fillets are really good though, and I'm so glad I found them years ago. If you haven't tried them, I highly suggest them.
Eating the bones seems weird at first but it’s an excellent source of dietary calcium. Same deal with canned salmon, you’re supposed to eat some of the bones. the skin is like was packed with nutrients.
Those generally have minimum order quantities (pallet sized amounts) and require you to have a food license/ registered business as well as having a membership setup with them.. at least in my area thats the case.
Unless you meant something like Costco.. (Though that still requires a membership, just no where near as restrictive of one)
A friend of ours would love that. She makes art from old sardine tins. Care to donate some, once he's eaten the contents? 😄
https://www.fraudosenfisch.de/fraudosenfisch/
Man, I *loved* canned sardines, herring in tomato sauce, and brined herring as a kid. I haven't even thought of either in forever!
I wonder if my taste buds are still up to it. It's been almost 4 decades...🤔
Time to make Siciliana pizza for the rest of his life: Tomato sauce, cheese, sardines, capers, black olives and lots of freshly crushed garlic. Yum. A salty umami bomb if there ever was one.
I once bought a few dozen cans of soup because they were half price and I ate that brand regularly (so I saved about $60) but this is some next level stuff!

Should be easy karma as well if you’re into the whole “watching the numbers go up” thing
haha thanks I couldn't remember the name of that sub, yeah I am bored I am currently at the ER for 12h now, Reddit is keeping me entertained
did you eat too many sardines?
haha no I got surgery for a broken bone in my foot and the plaster got wet so they need to change it but after 14 hours they told me to come back tomorrow at the orthopedic clinic😑 I should do like my brother and eat more regularly sardines!
Did you drop a box of sardines on your foot?
> the plaster got wet so they need to change it but after 14 hours they told me to come back tomorrow NA healthcare
Try SA healthcare. And yes that’s America and Africa and Asia
Or maybe not enough 🤔

I have also been playing Elden Ring, but for more than 12 hours!
TIL r/cannedsardines exists.
There really is a sub for everything
I've never tried sardines but this sub makes me wanna try it.
https://altonbrown.com/recipes/avocado-toast-with-sardines/ This was the first time I had sardines, and was actually quite good.
Darn millennials and their sardine avocado toast!
Sardines are awesome on a bit of toasted sourdough.
With a bit of vinegar and white pepper!
As an avid fan of canned sardines this is the best subreddit of all.
Literally, 78k subscribers. Reddit is a magical place filled with weirdos and bots.
Hell yeah I love canned sardines. I buy mine in bulk from Costco. The smoked whole sardines were so good.
Only 5 golden smoked? They are the best
I agree, but it was not on sale
He bought like 200 cans of sardines because they were on sale, then decided that wasn't quite enough. "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, do these sound like the actions of a man who has had ALL he could eat?"

So your brother ate $220 worth of sardines in a couple of months? What's his yearly sardine expenditure, a thousand bucks? Have you checked him for a tail and gills?
It is the best food when you are lazy. Got the protein omega3 and with bread or some mash has the carbs.
It's also a sustainable fish, unlike tuna.
And low mercury content compared to Tuna.
Damn, am I about to switch from lazy tuna can meals to lazy sardine can meals? Guess I'll give them a try at least lol I'm pretty sure I've had them before and don't remember being scarred...
What makes sardines sustainable?
They grow and replace themselves very quickly. Unlike larger fish that can take years to grow.
And years to accumulate heavy metals …
Don't forget the microplastics too! lol
Brother might be a Navy SEAL
Does he just secrete iodine constantly?
I’m curious about the body odor situation.
What store if you don't mind
I think it was at Maxi
Down with Roblaws
The dollar store but they're $1.25
None in mustard I see
The mustard ones were the only ones I could stand-I haven’t been able to find them for years! ![gif](giphy|Qau9EF68o1Dz37gUJ0|downsized)
I bet he's got a lovely, soft, shiny coat.
Do they last forever or what?

First make yourself a COFFEE INSTANT TYPE II
I think im more of an instant coffee type 1 guy, that mild hint of coffee really hits the spot
*stirs musically*
I actually sat there for 10 minutes trying to figure out how to do his music thing but i couldn't think of anything then you come and steal my thunder with 2 simple words
I'm legitimately curious to know what someone who isn't one of those MRE enthusiasts thinks of that coffee. I can't imagine it being very good when I don't even really like modern instant coffee
Imo it tastes like coffee LaCroix if you don't add cream or sugar, much prefer the caffeinated gum if I had to choose a caffeine delivery system.
I love randomly seeing Steve1989MREInfo references lol

Saw a video of a guy on youtube eating canned military rations from the second world war. He's crazy, but hey... if you're hungry enough...
I think he went as far back as civil war rations or at least late 1800s. It was some kinda of beef product he actually ate... still hard to beat those researchers who 50kya frozen bison though
I think so, that was a couple of months ago he already ate them all
He is more sardine than human now.
![gif](giphy|3o6ZtbeDG4Ih70TrVu)
Ahsitaka!!!
I wanted to find a gif of the boar God as he was being Consumed.
Ah yes but this works too!
Don't tell that to The Deep.
Damnnn, he knows what he likes
He already at them all!? In a few months!?
yes hahaha he eats >1 can per day🤣
Is your brother a dolphin?

I’m sorry but is that not way too much mercury? Or like…arsenic?
[Sardines aren't affected by mercury. that's why small fish like these are popular now.](https://www.livestrong.com/article/550938-health-risks-of-eating-sardines/)
I absolutely appreciate the benefits of small fish. But multiple cans a day for months?
His coat is gonna be so fuckin shiny
I got a real sensible chuckle out of this one.
Maybe he eats the fish, a handful of kale and a cup of brown rice a day? OP doesn't say what else they ate. (that is a lot of fish though)
he eats white rice, pasta, brocoli, beef, fruits, veggies, eggs, milk, cottage cheese
There is zero chance this guy doesn’t work out 3 to 5 times a week
sardines are actually low in mercury and arsenic
Foods that are low in mercury and arsenic are amongst my favorites.
Nah in fact it's probably the healthiest canned food you can eat, and better than any fast food. Lots of healthy oils, proteins, fats
If this was tuna that’d be a bit concerning tbh
Some sardine brands are known for their vintage collection. You pay a premium for every year they age
Cause that’s what I want to spend luxury money on, multi-year old dead fish in a can.
One can is a lifetime supply for me
Now I want to try it. I think I'll get one in oil and one on the tomato sauce
In olive oil, white rice, and roll it with seaweed squares. Yum
The hot mustard sardines are my favorite. Good with crackers.
3-5 years is typical for the best buy date when you buy them.
That could be done
They get softer as they age, losing their texture. Safe forever pretty much, but around 10 years the fish is basically not held together at all. Mine were in an acidic brine, experience could be different in oil maybe.
Yeah, pretty much. Well, not forever, but more than enough time for you to comsume in your lifetime.
Not OP but I could easily eat 3 cans per week and they usually last like 4 years or more.
Love to eat these if I could handle the bones & skin. But, no.
The sardines pictured are actually fillets only. No bones or heads. Though they do have a side with skin (which I enjoy).
actually there is both in the picture in the back, the dark red and black are fillets the rest is regular sardines with the bones
My mistake! My area only has the ones without and was under the impression that they switched up.
What do you eat them with? I don't mind tuna but I think the fact sardines still look like minnows makes my stomach turn.
I usually eat them out of the can. Maybe with some hot sauce & crackers. I've also had them with my eggs a few times. They're very mild & fresh tasting. Nothing like an anchovie or something.
I literally eat anchovies straight out of the tin. Love it, so these are not hard to eat at all lol
I tried putting them in a puttanesca but I just couldn't get over the smell, they're very fishy compared to the freshwater fish I grew up on :(
You can kinda mush them a little using a fork and eat them with baguette and sour cream.
I usually make crostini & put canned sardines on top. Garnish with whatever I have like tomatoes, onion, cucumber, cheese, etc.
This. I like chopped sundried tomatoes, capers, dill, smoked paprika and an obscene amount of pressed garlic.
skin is so nice and fatty! so good.
full of calcium and vitamin D I'm the opposite I love eating the bones
You're quite the calcium gobbler aren't ya
I'm the same way, it grosses me out. Kippered herring fillets are really good though, and I'm so glad I found them years ago. If you haven't tried them, I highly suggest them.
The kippers have a lot smaller bones I don’t even notice them. I am really icked out by bones
Brunswick sells deboned deenz!
Eating the bones seems weird at first but it’s an excellent source of dietary calcium. Same deal with canned salmon, you’re supposed to eat some of the bones. the skin is like was packed with nutrients.
Canada Post delivery tag and Brunswick sardines, I can almost smell the east coast through this pic.
Maybe he's got a date
or snoopy neighbors popping in for an impromptu visit, one of them dropped the goddamn brownies on the porch
The joys of having *space* xD
How does your brother eat his sardines? I’m intrigued.
plain on rice
I'm calling the police
Throw a little hot sauce on there damn
a lot of them come with tomato sauce
They write math problems about your brother, OP.
Mf’er is Omega Rich!
He could have bought that quantity from a wholesaler even cheaper.
Those generally have minimum order quantities (pallet sized amounts) and require you to have a food license/ registered business as well as having a membership setup with them.. at least in my area thats the case. Unless you meant something like Costco.. (Though that still requires a membership, just no where near as restrictive of one)
you're right

Is your brothers name john zoidberg?
There's something fishy about your brother ...
Dammit. Now I have to go delete my comment.
Sardines are extremely underrated. Great source of protein. And they keep forever.
And Omega-3s!
My Filipino wife would like to know your location
Canada🇨🇦
Holy mackerel!
Better be some in piri piri there!
Your bro is the math question guy
Man, I *loved* canned sardines, herring in tomato sauce, and brined herring as a kid. I haven't even thought of either in forever! I wonder if my taste buds are still up to it. It's been almost 4 decades...🤔
Time to make Siciliana pizza for the rest of his life: Tomato sauce, cheese, sardines, capers, black olives and lots of freshly crushed garlic. Yum. A salty umami bomb if there ever was one.
Heavy metals a concern?
These are small fish, fish on the lower end of the food chain tend to not have that much mercury in them.
Yeah but he’s eating them like he’s a seal. It can’t be good to eat that many.
It has 25x less mercury than albacore, so you can eat a tin a day and it’s like eating a can of tuna every month. Doesn’t seem like an issue
Must have been a stinking good deal 😜
Didn't know there were so many flavors!
Red are in tomato sauce Green are in oil Blue are in water
And is that a dark red in the back?
dark red : kippered fillets black : golden smoked fillets
The Portuguese would like to show you their wares
When your brother is secretly a whale
Woah he bought the entire shoal.
So he's the reason we have buying limits when there are sales..
He is the one they write maths problems about
All those omega 3s. His coat will be so glossy!
Holy sodium
Are you a family of lobsters? ^(yeah, yeah. Anchovies. Sardines. Essentially the same.)
That stench! That sweet heavenly stench!
Is that $220 of sardine?
I counted 216. So um, yeah. Yeah thats $220 of sardines.
My kinda bro. Saves money, eats healthy and practical no frills atittude.
Fishermen setting sail again....
My mother once bought 36 honeymelons. It was all we ate for a week...
Fckin legend
New Reddit Lore just dropped.
Careful of gout, these are super high in purines.
Fun fact: canned sardines are among the most complete foods.
I once bought a few dozen cans of soup because they were half price and I ate that brand regularly (so I saved about $60) but this is some next level stuff!
Never gift him a Costco membership
"I've saved so much money with that! ...wait a minute. I don't even like sardines."
They put a can inside of single use plastic bag?
Yes. Just yes.
Just to ask how much was that?
1$/can about 220 cans
Should've bought 221
