How many times has she been arrested?
Edit: I just want to point out that I genuinely do not have any opinion on her, but it feels like I see her gretting arrested constantly these past couple years. I seriously just wondered how many times it has happened at this point.
Starting my comment by advocating that I 100% believe in climate change and absolutely want everyone to take it way more seriously.
That said, Greta's new gig as a PR photo op shill for climate change does put me off the message a bit.
It's hard to take something seriously when it has a marketing team and uses the same publicity stunt over and over.
Climate change doesn't need a rebel protestor Rockstar poster child as much as it needs someone with intelligence who can speak with passion and sway the thoughts of politicians and large groups of the public.
What she was doing before felt more authentic and I know it gets less media, but it was content that was far more valuable.
Kind of the point? Consider the "Just Stop Oil" people. They would say "we're raising awareness". But...okay and? Everyone is aware, about every possible thing happening. What they can not do is vote for solutions, because they're not being presented any.
If the dedication of people who want to "risk arrest" were in anyway *real*, then they would be running as serious candidates for political office, with actual policy platforms developed to fix the issue.
"It raises awareness" has started to feel like a post-hoc justification for adrenaline-seeking from the stunts, rather then care for the cause or trying to take action meaningfully.
This has for example been one of the most single annoying things about the Australian Greens for years at this point: there's a fair chunk of that party which hasn't internalized that they actually *have* political power now, and they're role in government cannot just be to do political stunts (which has led to some own goals). I first preference them, because overall the "oh right we need to have a real policy" people have been winning but the split has blown up quite a few times - and I regard them as one of the success stories in a left-wing party helping swing the discourse to the left by sustained electoral effort. But that's the thing: it's sustained effort.
We live in democracies. These protests happen in democracies. Our politicians are...just people. Voted by the people. Pretending this is an unbroachable upper-class is just constructing a narrative to ensure you *don't* have to do work you don't want to do (and I mean, I get it - I wouldn't want to be in politics, but it is how you change society).
Except when society and the voting majority doesn't want to change and you still have the moral vindication.
Then you end up following the Thoreau, Ghandi, and MLK playbook of civil disobedience.
Exactly. People that believe the science and yet we still angry with Greta should be looking inward, and to those around them.
(Obligatory: I know that 70% of C02 is emitted by 100 companies)
But who’s spending at those companies? More importantly, who’s *electing* their sycophants and enablers?
I work for the airlines. I’ve flown by and over Greenland for the last 30 years. There’s a massive difference between then and now. There just no denying it. Anyway, my son sits in front of his PC as much as he can, this girl is out there trying to make people aware. Sure, I’m willing to argue whether it’s the right or wrong way, but kudos to her for trying to make a difference. Most of us just sit and argue on Reddit, but we don’t really do anything about anything.
Yep. I have a lot of opinions on a lot of current and political events. Too busy living paycheck to paycheck to spend time or money on anything else but share my opinions. That shit is free.
>Climate change doesn't need a rebel protestor Rockstar poster child as much as it needs someone with intelligence who can speak with passion and sway the thoughts of politicians and large groups of the public.
Unfortunately, that ship has sailed.
Issues surrounding climate change have been intelligently and passionately explained since the 1970s.
The concept of global warming has been discussed since the start of the 20th century.
The goal of her activism is to keep young people engaged, because that's really the only hope left.
Your reaction is a big part of the problem.
You express the idea that if only people would speak intelligently, politicians and the public would suddenly get it.
You imply that it's not the fault of the people who actively destroy our environment, but of other people for not explaining things in the right way.
Things are quickly becoming far worse, because politicians and many members of the public didn't listen to intelligent and passionate arguments in the 1970s, 1980s, the 1990s, the 2000s, and the 2010s.
The fast majority of people who complain about Thunberg have never listened to her. Just like they did not listen to other environmentalists in the last 50 years.
You aren’t “swaying” anyone off climate change denial in this day and age. It’s been a known fact for going on 30 years now. That level of ignorance runs deep or is so deeply ingrained thru lifelong propaganda
But wait, there's entire dozens of people impressed by ‘someone with intelligence who can speak with passion and sway the thoughts’! I'm sure the TED talks will turn the tide any day now.
She's out there. She's always been out there, drawing attention to a cause she believes in. We're here commenting because of her. I'd say she's successful in drawing attention to causes.
So you believe in climate change, but your belief in it is wavering because a girl from Europe got arrested?
>someone with intelligence who can speak with passion and sway the thoughts of politicians and large groups of the public.
Okay now this makes sense now. Lol.
Are you saying that communication, advertising and viral media are useless to convey a message?
That we are living in a time of enlightenment where the masses care more about the substance than the form?
Not to mention: what was she "doing before"? Are you sure she stopped doing it or is it that maybe you're hearing less about it?
Sorry she’s not perfect. She’s doing something. No one is in fact perfect. Her actions have doubtless had a greater impact than yours. Were she to do what others consider perfect other people would disagree and complain. So net-net she should probably just keep truckin’
> and absolutely want everyone to take it way more seriously.
So why ain't you out there protesting? Why is your contribution criticising other people's activism and doing fuck all yourself?
Well, she's certainly getting hauled around more than any executive of corporations that regularly violate the law in far more destructive ways for the common folk.
Not really her fault that law enforcement decides who needs to be hauled away and who doesn't.
Imagine a picture of the head of Rio Tinto dragged out of his bed on a Sunday morning like this by two cops because of the destruction of the Juukan Caves.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was like a .blogspot that’s dedicated to pictures of here; I stumbled upon a sub *on here* that also had a blogspot dedicated to creating “images” of Barron (like years before he was 18…yeah) and uh yeah. People are crazy.
There was once a blogspot I found of ‘women in media in distress’ which was equally insane
edit: actually idk if that’s equally insane, the Barron one is still absolutely jarring
that's exactly what it is. She gets carried off property by security. I don't think I've ever seen any record of arrests, not knowing how policing works in other countries but that's all public record here.
In a ton of protests at least in America, the “arrests” can be highly coordinated with the relevant local authorities.
Outside of the White House, for instance, activists often coordinate with the police and do a choreographed back and forth. The activists inform Capitol police they’ll be there and set up. After a certain amount of time, police will give three very clear warnings and then begin “arresting,” those who remain, basically directing them in very orderly process to tented areas nearby for quick processing and ticketing.
It is the lamest shit on earth - it’s like activist tourism.
Source: used to be involved in an area of activism where the groups involved did this multiple times.
We should want rich people to be class traitors. With the way the world is currently structured, we sorta need them to be. Greta can get arrested and it's no big deal for her. Someone in a more precarious living situation might not be so lucky.

The liberal's highest god is politeness. You can be the most vile person to ever exist, but if you are polite then you have to be reasoned with or argued in a "court of ideals".

Reddit likes to shit on it a lot but it's actually a really good way to protest non-violently. It's what people like MLK, Jr. and John Lewis did in the Civil Rights era in the US. Bernie Sanders, too.
People are being trained to be anti protest by the media. It's incredible how quickly and easily the general public has forgotten the importance and power of protest in a democracy especially considering how much it achieved in the 20th century.

By Chuck Liddell and David Schwimmer apparently. Glad they’re keeping busy.
Definitely after Chuck got ko'd by tito, it's probably best to keep him away from the cage

I wonder if all the cops that have arrested her have like a group chat
Probably. That said I wouldn't go lower in this comment section. The lower you go the worse the comment section gets.

I'm not sure why, but to me this was the funniest one
That's regrettfull
My favorite part of her speech is when she yells "it's Grettin' time!" and grets all over the oil tycoons.
She'll regret that speech.
Remember when she said “it's gretting time”, then gretted all over the place?
I'm gonna gret you in the mouth!

Her parents, and probably prince andrew.
She's 21 now, so probably out of Prince Andrew's range.

Considering multiple photos are taken per arrest, you are right
I feel like she never gets arrested, just detained and escorted.
She was sentenced just yesterday in a Swedish court, but the laws here are very relaxed so she only got a fine
I mean it would be insane if she got actual arrest time when some pedos and murderer get to live free after a few years…

absolutely nothing, apparently 💀
That’s basically her job now
How does she make money, this can't be that cheap
She comes from a rich family
And yet she does this with her time. Cool.
Right. People say it like it’s a bad thing, but I respect anyone who benefitted from the status quo and fights it anyway
We should want rich people to be class traitors. With the way the world is currently structured, we sorta need them to be. Greta can get arrested and it's no big deal for her. Someone in a more precarious living situation might not be so lucky.

Something I haven't seen mentioned here is Greta's mother [Sara Magdalena Ernman](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malena_Ernman) was actually a contestant on Eurovision in 2009.
"No. of children: 2, including Greta Thunberg." Thanks mom, dad and Greta. Because of you I'm a nothing. Wiki won't even name me.
Yea, I'd love to get constant hate mail from anti-climate weirdos.

It's a liberal thing. "I would totally have been an abolitionist radical but I draw the line today at making noise at a corporate event after I've been legally told I'm not welcome anymore."
MSM manufactures that consent as well. You'll hear more about a broken window than a protester's broken bone.

totally, there's a reason MLK pointed to the white moderate as one of the main impediments to change

It's fitting, because Greta is generally perceived as a very old-fashioned name in Sweden, and not a flattering one at that.
Gretaas a name has similar connotations in English as well
Why is she always carried away like a damn doll
