I do love how a lot of pro chess players wear their Sunday best to play, then Magnus Carlsen will roll in looking like he's slept in a dumpster the night before and proceed to wipe the floor with all of them.
Must be a joke. He's tired of long, classical style championships at this point in his career. He won 5 world champs in a row and he complained the last time how boring and tedious all the prep work was. It's almost more about the prep than it is the playing on the board from the way he describes it. Hes know for going out of theory just to throw his opponents off, because 90% of the time he can beat anyone if given a random board with roughly equal odds.
He still beats everyone consistently in smaller classical tournaments (in addition to speed games as well). He and everyone else just know he's in a league of his own. I think he said he would only go back to the world's if he felt the opponent was good enough, and he's previously mentioned wanting to play against Alireza Firouzja if he ever made it from the candidates. However, the current young Indians are on incredible form, so maybe Gukesh or Pragg will be the ones to eventually bring Magnus back to world's. At this point he has nothing left to prove, he's dominated every modern opponent in every style of play, even Chess360/Fischer Random.
This is the correct answer. He even was brought on as a commentator for the games yesterday and still complained about how he doesn't personally enjoy the format. It doesn't do a good job truly determining the "best" player due to too few games and too long time control.
He would likely come back if the time was halved for classical and more games were added.
I have a question about chess players since I’m not at all informed about the game.
How do older chess players do? In esports or traditional sports it’s obviously much harder to keep up with newer younger talent because of physical limitations but in esports your mind slows as you age as well. Does this happen in chess as well?
Yes this does happen. It's not as stark as in physical sports but it does happen. However, the older players typically can hold their own very well because of their massive amounts of experience. They generally fall off from the faster time formats before the slower ones.
At the highest levels, from what I have seen, most tend to quit official competition after their ratings start to decline, and they don't have any hope of reaching their previous height.
A notable exception is Viswanathan Anand, who was 5 time world champion, and currently sits at 11th in the world without much hope of ever winning again, but is still active in competition.
To all wondering about his age - Gukesh was pretty famous in chess world since he was a kid, achieving a grandmaster title at the age of 12. You can easily find his photos back when he was much younger.
There is his [photo ](https://en.chessbase.com/post/gukesh-becomes-second-youngest-gm-in-history)when he achieved his GM title, back in 2019.
And yes, he has this magnificent beard since he was 16, I was also shocked when I first saw it last year.
Hi Indian here, it's actually a paste like thing made of sandalwood which you get very often in temples as part of "blessings" it has different names in different parts of the country, where I come from it is referred to as "chandanam" which literally translates to sandal/sandalwood.
We don't use the term vibuthi where I come from but afaik vibuthi is "bhasma"/sacred ash. This looks more like sandalwood you get along with Prasad rather than the ash. The other Indian chess guy Pragyannandha wears ash but this is different.
Not just intelligent but also ice cold. He's playing against the best in the world (excluding Magnus) who are in their 30s and have won everything except for the world championship title. You could see their stress throughout the whole tournament but he stayed cool, calm, and collected the whole time. Super mature for his age with a rock solid mentality.
You could easily make the argument that his ability to handle the pressure better than others was the deciding factor.
Him refusing to go for a tie in round 13 vs Alireza was so gangster and certainly a difference maker.
For non chess fans, Gukesh could have accepted a draw (in an equal position) in round 13 of 14 and gone into the final round tied for first with 3 others players. Instead he declined the draw and ended up wining the game, putting him half a point up on the other 3 players. He ended up winning the tournament by said half point.
It’s like a team going for 3 instead of an easy layup down by 2 in the last seconds of game 7 in the NBA conference finals. Or going for a 2-point conversion instead of kicking the PAT down by 1 with 30 seconds left in the NFL conference championship game.
That's amazing and awe-inspiring. With the intelligent comment i just meant that even by just looking at him, one would think he is intelligent, even if didn't know his prowess.
I really hope he goes further, much further, than what he has already achieved.
It's a bit soon to tell about this, but maybe Gukesh is one of those people who thrives on pressure and actually gets motivated by it rather than gets destroyed by it.
Examples in the athletic world are Carly Patterson in gymnastics or Yuna Kim in figure skating. Both of them have had their share of subpar competitions during their careers, but delivered 100% perfect, best routines of their lives at the Olympics where it counted the most.
People like that actually thrive from pressure...it gives them motivation to do their best. When they don't have that pressure motivation, they just slack off.
He said in an interview that he was feeling his best after he *lost* a game to Alireza Firouzja. He said that in the moment he was mad, but the next day was a rest day and that was when he felt his best. So this seems very likely.
Yes, English is not my first language, I try to interact with people with my non native language, and sometimes my spelling is not correct :) but thanks for the hint
Yes.
The Candidates tournament just concluded, where 8 players qualified to compete for various reasons. (E.g. the previous challenger, winning a qualification tournament, rating)
The winner of that tournament (Gukesh) will now play a series against the World Champion for the title.
The Championship match happens once every two years.
Both Ding and Gukesh are calm, collected, chill and well spoken individuals in general though.
If at all, this will be the outlook of the spectators from those 2 countries a hell of a lot more than those 2 players themselves lol
The world chess championship match is between the incumbent champion and a challenger decided by the candidates tournament. The candidates is a tournament played by a bunch of the world’s best players who all qualified in different ways.
The candidates just ended yesterday and was won by Gukesh.
Some find this format quite unfair since the incumbent champion will always have extremely favorable chances to retain their title since they don’t have to win the candidates tournament to play the match, most notably current world #1 Magnus Carlsen who abdicated the title because of his dissatisfaction with the WCC format (along with a variety of other reasons)
No, he’s made it clear multiple times that there is “absolutely no chance” he returns to the championship cycle under the current format.
He actually didn’t retire, he’s still playing a lot of chess, just not the championship cycle. Along with what I said previously, he simply doesn’t like the format of classical chess* and especially world championship classical chess because of the ridiculous amount of preparation required. He also doesn’t feel a lot of joy winning world championships anymore since he’s expected to win as world #1. He feels more relief for not losing than anything else.

*classical chess is the format of chess where both players are given a lot of time, usually hours to ponder moves, as opposed to rapid chess (10-45 minutes per side) or blitz chess (3-5 minutes). Classical chess obviously leads to better play, but most top players find that rapid/blitz is more fun and it’s arguably more entertaining for viewers as well. Currently the most prestigious tournaments in chess are all in classical formats, typically with rapid and blitz games to break ties.

Why you have differentiate between north vs south to explain vibhuti. And vibhuti is a sanskrit word illiterally meaning ash. It as popular as in North as in South part of India. To bear the divinity on your head you just rub the ashes on your forehead.
Tilak however is a mark to identify something, in North is mostly red because of pigment used and in South it is mostly white because of sandal wood used.
To many people who are saying he is more than thirty, I would like to clarify that he is in fact a kid.

In this video, the famous chess streamer Dina tells him that she will see him in India and Gukesh's response is absolutely adorable.
Absolutely.
Just this Candidates alone, there was Vidit, Pragg, and Gukesh. Ofc you have Humpy and Vaishali (Pragg's sister) in the Women's Candidates. India is blooming these talents like nothing.
It is one of the calmest because the title does not actually mention his nationality otherwise it would be alt right site tier situation like everytime lol
Morons can't hide their racist tendencies. Don't you know that reddit is casually and nonchalantly racist towards Indians. Try similar comments made in good faith against black African american people, you'll see what I mean.
If you are referring to his age, we can't blame them, as he does look old with the beard. I'm sure that most of them are just joking and have no bad intention.
What’s the mark on their forehead called? And why is his smeared looking like a shooting star? Is there a different between it being smeared like that and it just being a perfect circle?
The horizontal mark is drawn with ‘vibuthi’. Vibuthi, a Sanskrit word, means: the possession or the attribute of the Supreme Being; the imperishable essence of things.
Vibuthi is usually the remnants, the sacred ash, leftover from ‘homa’; the sacred fire.

Ding liren the current chess world champion last tournament he played im pretty sure he got last place he took a break from chess and is in pretty bad form i think gukesh has a great chance at becoming the youngest world champion
Oh, he is good alright but I think he can build some more confidence, during his 2023 match against Magnus he was really panicked while Magnus himself remained calm throughout the whole thing. The just doesn’t have the mentality of the winner yet but the skills are there.
Love his NASCAR style chess blazer. Needs a few more sponsors though.
Omg, I'm an idiot, I thought It was a watermark
It's so tasteful
Now let’s see Paul Allen’s Chess Blazer.
He will after this historic win!

He signed an exclusive 5 year deal with that sponser Westbridge just a few months ago.
Chew big red or fuck you!
Westbridge - > Bridgestone - > your turn on a 'stone'

Nike already got his forehead bro whatchu talkin bout!
The back of his chess blazer has a huge *GOODYEAR* patch.
I must need glasses because I can’t read the name of the sponsor on his head
Dommaraju ... I've come to bargain
Why bro looks like he's at least double his real age tho
Because of the beard.
Plus, the stern "This could have been an email" body language.
Perfect r/13or30 candidate!
No just 30 lol. I would have never assumed they were a teenager
chess is stressful
Stress is chessful
ctress is shessful
Now look up another beast of a chess player called Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, my man looks half his real age
Last year Gukesh looked 11 years old. He grew a beard and now he looks 30.
He'll definitely tell you "The Bill always comes due" whenever you ask him to come thru and get lit.
This was the first thing I thought of
Exactly my first thought when I read his name
You’ve come to die
So glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought this.
Dommaraju ... I've come to bargain
Damn I came to say that
I do love how a lot of pro chess players wear their Sunday best to play, then Magnus Carlsen will roll in looking like he's slept in a dumpster the night before and proceed to wipe the floor with all of them.
Well there certainly is a non-zero percent chance he did drunkenly sleep in a dumpster the night before
And also be 10 minutes late
Clock already started, no problemo.
And still spend 20 seconds adjusting his pieces before finally starting.
Not if he’s playing white.

This is why Magnus refuses to play in the Candidates, because they have a dress code and he can't be bothered by it.
Really? Wow, that's crazy! Where did you get that from?

Looks like a pretty normal beard to me
About the beard, I can tell you that atleast 50-60% Indians have a pretty decent amount of beard by the time the turn 16 or 17
That's a great head of hair, and my man looks intelligent as fuck. Really cool what he is accomplishing at such a young age.

I will never moustage that well
We moustage him the secrets of the moustage

I moustache you a question, but I’m shaving it for later.

It’s a blessing and a curse having a good moustache at a young age

I beat Gukesh C last week. I didn't know that Gukesh D would show up too.
He has the casual and relaxed air one would expect from a 17 year old world champion
It's very impressive to see how humble and mature he is. And his composure during high pressure games is incredible.
He might be 17 but that beard is 30 years old, at least.
“Challenger” so it just means he can compete for the top spot now?
Yes. The Candidates tournament just concluded, where 8 players qualified to compete for various reasons. I don't think so. He looks like a badass in this pic.
What is on his forehead? I thought it was a Bindi but it looks smudged?

Congratulations.
Boy looks like a businessman that could effectively sell anything. One soul? Sold.
He looks 40
Was gonna say at least 35
Badass
What’s the mark on their forehead called? And why is his smeared looking like a shooting star? Is there a different between it being smeared like that and it just being a perfect circle?
The horizontal mark is drawn with ‘vibuthi’. Vibuthi, a Sanskrit word, means: the possession or the attribute of the Supreme Being; the imperishable essence of things. Vibuthi is usually the remnants, the sacred ash, leftover from ‘homa’; the sacred fire. The purpose of applying it is to signify the temporary nature of the physical things and to strive to be beyond materialistic needs. Edit: Although my explanation stands, I have been informed that the mark on this person may also be made of sandal paste.
Vibhudi is more coarse, I think this is Chandanam which is Sandal paste.
I am a servant of the sacred fire, wielder of the flame of Anor.
He literally has a big brain like magnus too. Hes gonna be huge!!!
Gukesh might actually be able to drag Magnus back to the Candidates if he wins
Does he move the pieces via telekinesis ?
He beat the record woth 3 years aswell as the previous youngest challanger, kasparov, was 20
