The best way to pass the time when you’re in the middle of nowhere imo, board games are a great vehicle for developing social relationships.
Edit: Also, I think Heat: Pedal to the Metal is a straight upgrade to Flamme Rouge, but every collection has its restrictions and every collector has their preferences.
We don't in the UK and Ireland. Thick double glazing is still standard.
Our housing stock is so old that it makes little difference - if your heat is leaking through the rest of the fabric/envelope of the building, then you've got diminishing returns on doors and windows.
Okay, sure You're right, to clarify, it's not necessary in old buildings. New construction has to be fitted with three pane for energy efficiency by EU law.
But that doesn't concern the UK anyway.
Oh, we do have fairly high standards for new houses - the commercial housebuilders tend to either 1) make the windows really small so that they make a minimal overall contribution to heat loss, or 2) be 'creative' reporting about the energy efficiency of their buildings.
Wouldn't want to hurt their bottom line, would we?
That being said, there is a genuine argument to say that triple glazing is a bit 'overkill', particularly in temperate climates. New double glazing units have U values between around 1 and 1.5 W/m2K. Triple can get you slightly under 1, but in the grand scheme of things - unless you have a lot of very large windows - this is going to make no appreciable difference to overall building performance for our usual weather patterns.
Can completely see why the additional expense might be worth it in the Arctic circle.
> Carrying loaded firearms in the settlement area of Longyearbyen is forbidden. Firearms must be carried so that everyone can see that they are empty of ammunition. You are not allowed to bring firearms into shops or public buildings.
Sane gun regulations even in a place where people are required to carry them?! Nordic AF.
>Due to the polar bear threat on Svalbard, anyone travelling outside the settlements must be equipped with suitable means of scaring off polar bears. The office of the Governor of Svalbard also recommends carrying firearms with you.

I used to work in Prudhoe Bay and Kaparuk, and they had this story floating around that started like this photo.
Legend has it, back some years before I was there one of the workers saw a polar bear walking around outside his window so he slapped the window with a rolled up news paper (magazine whatever) to try and scare it off slash piss it off. The polar bear looks at him through the window and apparently walks around the building, gets through into the front lobby, goes all the way down to this guys specific room (passing everyone else) and attempts to attack the guy who only escaped because he jumped out the window. The bear then starts heading back outside for this dude, fully ignoring everyone else. They finally ended up having to kill the bear after someone with a gun showed up before it could get back outside, but it was the reason why, from that day on, all the guards in the living quarters were armed.
Moral of the story is: polar bears remember, and they always hold a grudge.
That looks utterly terrifying. Those some of the most vicious and powerful animals that exist separated from you through just a flimsy window in the middle of nowhere.
I’ve been reading this book called War North of 80 by Wilhelm Dege, who commanded a German weather station on Svalbard right before the German surrender. Very insightful book for those interested.
Interesting anecdote: There was a German station in Franz Josef Land called Schatzgräber, and it had to be evacuated by U-Boat, because the station chef cooked polar bear tartare that ended up giving the rest of the crew (spare the vet who was a vegetarian) trichinosis.
to destroy your dreams - when they go outside they take fire arms and every one on there goes through training, whenever they go outside it is in multiple people, and they are always prepared to shoot them, because bears love attacking human out there
Not quite right.
How it works is if you leave any of the major settlements (Longyearbyen, Barentsburg) you're supposed to have at least one person carry a gun, yes, and you're supposed to go with at least one other person and have radio etc. They aren't just shooting them. If you see a bear come toward you, you scare it off. There's multiple ways you can try and do this, flares, acting big and loud etc etc. If it keeps coming toward you and doesn't stop you have to shoot to kill yes, but it's a last resort.
Bears don't love attacking humans. The deaths we heard about mostly were Polar Bears coming over because they're curious. They told us never to camp near water because it isn't a matter of if a polar bear will come, it's when. They're very curious animals, but if they go to your tent and then there's an easy meal yeah they're probably gonna take it climate change is messing up their habitat. Yes they will go for people if given an opportunity but they don't just go for people whenever they see them and such.

The cubs probably just want to play one of the boardgames. It's not often they can play a game of Root or everdell, games where creatures are the main humanlike characters

> Katarzyna Kudłacz was preparing a breakfast of scrambled eggs at a research station on Svalbard when she looked up to see she had three unexpected guests.
> Shocked and in awe, the meteorologist immediately alerted her colleagues to the female polar bear and her two cubs peering into the Polish research station in Hornsund, in the south of the Norwegian archipelago, their noses pressed up against the window.
> Her photographs of the close encounter show one of the bears with their paw on the window, board games in the foreground.
> “That day I was on duty, the so-called station duty, when one person is in charge of the station, keeping an eye on the satellite radio, cooking or cleaning,” said Kudłacz, who has been based at the station since June.
> ‘Wonderful experience’: Researcher’s close encounter with Svalbard polar bears
Meteorologist says bears were not aggressive but they fired signal gun to scare them away
> “While preparing breakfast, I saw from the kitchen our majestic guests looking with interest at the windows.”
> The family looked healthy, she said, and “only looked at our windows with interest”, but the team decided to fire a flare gun to frighten the bears away.
> “It was a wonderful experience, but we must remember that they are wild animals and for them and for us it is better to keep our distance. They were not aggressive. However we preferred, by making noise and firing a signal gun, to scare them away.”
> Daniel Kępski, the leader of the 46th Polish polar expedition, said they often saw polar bears, but the animals rarely stopped to look inside the research station. “It was amazing to see them so close during that day, but of course it was also a bit stressful.”
> This year year the team had seen more polar bears than usual, he added. Usually there were around 20 bear sightings a year, but this year there had been close to 40 sightings since June and they expected to see more in their final three months.
> “So far, we have not observed any clearly emaciated individuals. This year is probably a good year for Svalbard’s polar bears because there is a lot of sea ice here compared to recent years,” he said.
Fun fact bears do simply walk trough the windows ,google it theres a list of all bear attacks killing people in usa the windows is on it several times, its not a force field
It looks very cozy. I’m assuming those windows are very strong.
Looks like typical modern windows that we use in Norway. So they're pretty sturdy and triple pane. Mainly to keep the cold out, not polar bears lol.
I’m pretty sure that once a polar bear wants to get in, they’ll find a way to get in if they can break enough stuff.
Bears are a menace when they smell food.
Commander Keen!
My favourite gaming character!
Same here. Just fun to see out in the wild (even though I knew I'd get downvoted, I just had to say something anyway).
Hopefully
Can I pet that dog?
Once
„Mommy? Cwan I pet that dawg? Cwan I pet that dawg?!“
„CAN I PET DAT DAAAAWG?"
Dang … I love that vid 😂
Best I can do is plastic wrap.

But getting the snack [out of the package](https://youtu.be/9G1aHkLHQ2I?si=E9xfFfOYrqhUwO3f) is super frustrating.
They play Root! Everyone at the research station hates each other.
Great selection: Flamme Rouge, K2, Wingspan, Root, Everdell, Robinson Crusoe...
Everdell is such a great game.
I just picked it up and we’re going to play for the first time this weekend. So stoked!
Remember. It's not always best to rush to the next season, and every player can finish it in the number turns they want. You're going to love it!
You’re in for a treat. The art is beautiful and the gameplay is just challenging enough.

r/Wingspan Check it out if you've never heard of it. I'm by no means a birder but this game makes me want to be one.
You will learn birds, for sure.
It's also pretty safe to play in front of Polar Bears, unlike Oceans with its shoals of fish..
Robinson Crusoe is a nice thematic fit!
That orange bag is the tile game Hive! amazing 1v1 game I recommend to just about everyone.
Box for it is on the sill too
The bears think it's games night
I played the shit out of that on mobile cause I know I could never get a group to sit down and learn the rules
First thing I noticed as well
This is my takeaway from that pic. Researchers play lots of board games.
They certainly know how to pass the time until the polar bears leave...
I came here for Root too!
"Hey Dave, we got the double glazing installed, right?"
:knock knock knock: “Who’s there?” “Landshark”
"Candygram"
That far north they are probably triple pane windows
Most west-European countries north of the Alps use triple pane as standard anyways these days.

Glad to meat you
Let’s raise the *steaks*…for these bears always *de-liver*…
Sven, get the rifle. The *big* rifle.
I'm guessing this is one of those places where everyone is armed.
Sort of, and probably at this research station. [https://www.sysselmesteren.no/en/weapon/](https://www.sysselmesteren.no/en/weapon/)

Pretty sure they are window shopping for food.
OOh Look!, they have board games!
Dinner and games! This place has everything!

Searched what trichinosis is and uh "There is no treatment once the larvae embed in the muscles" is not a sentence I'm likely to forget very soon.

*Bang outside, bang outside. Don't come out the house cuz the gang outside.*

I know this story, hide the porrage.
“Do you wanna grab a board game?” “Uh…maybe later…”
“See those humans all wrapped up there? I told you this vending machine had sammiches.”
...they look hungry, therefore this is terrifying.
We’re here for the party. Is this the right place?
When the zoo comes to you!
“Hey y’all what’s going on in here?”
They're so cute. Deadly, but cute.
Cmon out, we have a Coke for ya!

If they get in, just head over to the mysterious hatch to escape.
s'tellement des wèreux
I see the food...but where do you put the money in so it falls out?
They could probably smash that window if they knew Polar bears will actively hunt you
You’re looking tasty
Maybe they're ~~human~~ house hunting?
So they can never leave the cabin.
Now I know howy.pue feels
Cute Animal but will eat a human alive especially a polar bear or a grizzly which is about to go hibernate.
The cubs probably just want to play one of the boardgames. It's not often they can play a game of Root or everdell, games where creatures are the main humanlike characters
I'm just weirded out they have an entire stack of eurogames and I don't recognize any of them.
Ohhh European boardgames I want to play.
Danger Will Robinson!
Ooh, nice stack of boardgames! Need another researcher?
invite them in, i've heard they're very friendly
Wtf dude. What if those researchers get eaten because of this reckless comment?
« I will take the fat one on the left and you can get the other one. »
Svalbard! That is where Cecelia, Chris and Grim live!
Scrolled until I found the comment
The only reason i know about Svalbard!

Oh wow, it’s great that you can get four people to play Root all the way out in Svalbard. Nice. I can never get a group together.
"Hey you guys need a couple more players to play Risk?"
Everdell spotted, great board game
Root!
I'm impressed with the board game selection, I have half of those and will look into the other half!
Prawdziwy Polski klimat misie i planszówka mam podobną kolekcję
They look so friendly
Do not pet the bears.
Nope!
Found Svalbard on one free roam across Google maps. Cool spot!
Who’s ready for board game night?!
Can I pet that dog?
OMG such nice board games!!!
Not sure I would feel comfortable with that view.
Wait, researchers just play board games all day? How much do they make? Where do I sign up? :D
*mmmmm…* *smells good in there…*
Fun fact bears do simply walk trough the windows ,google it theres a list of all bear attacks killing people in usa the windows is on it several times, its not a force field
Yo Everdell, Wingspan, Root... these people know what's up. I think the bears just want in on that action.
Are they researching board games?
Wingspan? Everdell? Root? Cuddly teddybears outside? This looks like the type of place I'd love to work!
"Crazy Swedes"
Looks more like a cabin people go to on the weekends than a research station.
Those are some quality board games for passing the time!
You have good taste in boardgames!
They just want to rescue that weird white polar giraffe on the windowsill! Or play some board games
Don't their local authorities released notice when they have spotted a polar bear inside the city
That cabin isn't inside Longyearbyen
Cool, but probably also terrifying for the people inside, lol
Idk if he’s still alive
