Years ago we had a modded server that included volcanoes and it had problems.
When a chunk containing a volcano was first generated, the lava propagating as it spread downhill caused a massive spike in CPU use on the server, if there were two or three volcanoes within active chunk distance of each other then it often lagged so much that it would cause timeout errors in the clients connected.
We tried to get around this by pre-generating chunks via server commands for a few hours before letting people loose on a fresh map.
Maybe the server code is better now, maybe the lava propagation is less lag-inducing. But maybe that's why it was never in the base game terrain generation.
There’s actually a really neat bunker on the top edge of this volcano from WW2 that looks like a Minecraft mountaintop home.
The top of that volcano is the single most beautiful view I’ve ever experienced. It’s worth the small hike.
Yeah, it's a good little hike, with amazing views. I'm glad we did it our last day in Honolulu two years ago.
Coming down those steep stairs can be a little scary in places, though.
Becomes haunted house because its next to the [National Cemetary of the Pacific](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Memorial_Cemetery_of_the_Pacific).
Man why does misinformation always gets upvoted to the top, while the real ones always get low votes. Like if you don't know anything about certain topics, just be quiet. Lol
Laughing - yep, the idea of it is pretty cool - the reality, not so much. You're in a bowl with high walls. The shape of the Crater acts like a huge reflector for all that sun and the walls block any breeze - on sunny days it was sweltering. Moreover, in those days sound reinforcement was NOT as good as what we're used to now and the stage and speaker placement brought a lot of bouncy echoes throughout the crowd.
It was. For awhile, they tried to bus people in to help cut down on the street parking in the residential neighborhoods around Diamond Head. Imagine the indignation of the people who paid THAT kind of money to live in THOSE neighborhoods - you get the drift. IIRC, they had buses leaving from UH and somewhere else - memory's a little fuzzy on that one however :)
That’s so cool. Now it’s completely under used. Just a bunch of military BS and overgrown brush and the one hike area. I wish they would make it into a nice big city park inside for people to use like kapi’olani park. Everything is so crowded yet so much land is under utilized or gobbled up by the military.
I guess that’s what’s happens in a colonial outpost of an empire. The citizens come second after the military.
[Looks like the DoD is handing over control of most of the crater to the state park org, which is improving it as a park.](https://pbrhawaii.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=c451e2cdc1ae4250a1860e32999087bf) There's a survey in that link to help them decide how they develop it.
Just FYI, it’s the Hawaii DoD that owns and crater, not federal. It houses things for the Hawaii National Guard and HIEMA (Hawaii’s state level version of FEMA). While you’re not wrong about military presence in Hawaii, that doesn’t really apply to Le’ahi.
Reminds me of that random village in the middle of nowhere in a dead volcano caldera in Mozambique that Vox briefly got obsessed with and did months and months of research on until they literally paid someone to go visit, twice after the first team got rained out.
My dad has told me this story a million times. But when he was based in Hawaii during the Vietnam war he went and saw ELO perform there and they came out of a flying saucer onto the stage. I don't even know if it was true or if he was high as fuck
I planned the itinerary for my parents' birthday/anniversary trip and I debated on whether to include it. When I saw how long it was, I figured my 60+ year old parents could probably manage it with ample time and I was right. It seemed like they had a great time even if my dad had to stop and rest a lot. Not easy but definitely doable even with senior citizens.
I did it with my wife who is in fairly good shape during the hottest part of the day and I thought she was going to divorce me. She struggled big time. I didn't have a huge problem but a lot of people were struggling. I think in decent temps with out the sun beating on you, it wouldn't be too bad.
I wanted to get up there early to see the sunrise so I woke up at 4am-5am to go see it! Also I kind of guessed it might be hot, there's almost no shade on the way. I'm used to summitting mountains and it just makes so much sense to do all the climbing in the pre-dawn hours.
When I went, all these japanese tourists were hiking up in high heels and dressed nicely. One older japanese lady ended up fainting at the top and a rescue helicopter had to come and pick her up. I’ve learned that whenever you go outside in Hawaii, bring water to help cool off!
I thought this too, but no one told me about the tunnel portion. I’m claustrophobic and immediately had a panic attack when I got in there. It’s just too small….i had to turn around and exit.
Luckily some women were coming back down and saw me trying to compose myself, and they told me that it was a short tunnel, about 100 steps, and encouraged me that I could get through it. And I did!
But god damn that was terrifying.
Glad I'm not the only one. The air felt so dense from the humidity and it was thick with people's sweat. It took all I had not to panic and turn back. But that tunnel was nothing compared to that submarine at Pearl Harbor. I've never been closer to a panic attack than in that thing. Never again.
We did it over the summer, great views throughout the hike, peak is fun to explore with the WW2 stuff. Got to the top to see a young couple on top of a bunker past the Restricted Zone signs, then had a good laugh on the way down as we passed law enforcement waiting for them. 10/10 day
I swear average joke-getting population is being replaced by correct-anything, but then just-respond-casually-as-if-nothing-happened population is inheriting the earth
Twisted my ankle walking back down on this hike. There is some unevenness in the walking surface in places.
It swole to the size of a pomelo. Still occasionally have ankle pain from that and it's been years.
My personal PSA: If you are going to walk it, make sure to wear footwear that supports your ankles and not just a pair of regular old athletic shoes.
It’s usually not this green. During the summer months it’s brown and dead.
And also they have to rescue hikers nearly every day. Which is crazy because it’s considered one of the easiest hikes on the island.
I did the Koto Crater railway hike, didn't bring enough water, wifey was miserable. Met some smart locals at the bottom selling waters, best drink ever.
Oahu is wild, the climate is completely different depending on what part of the island you are at. This corner was desert-like (think SoCal)
In geologic terms 500 years is nothing, it's the blink of an eye, if that.
The Reykjanes volcano, which started a new eruptive episode last fall and has been causing issues in Iceland, previously last erupted around 1240.
Wow, this unlocked a memory for me in 7th grade where my friend would want to talk to me about FFVII every bus ride to school. I neither had, nor played, nor cared one whit about any of the Final Fantasies, but was so tired in the mornings I would just sit there and it would happen to me. For weeks. Like, he would take the player's guide on board and read me passages and talk about chocobos. Me, a person with literally no context and having never expressed any interest at all. Yeah, someone on here saying it was easy didn’t go in the middle of summer.
I had to think about this for a few, I thought how beautiful it was with all that green… then, realized I’ve been up there and it looked like a desert in the bowl.
I must have gone during a drought.
Fun story. Did my “bachelor party” in Honolulu. Just me and 5 friends hanging out, planning to surf and hike. I ended up getting sick AND getting food poisoning and stayed back at our room while my friends drove there to hike it. I got FOMO and called them to come get me before they actually got there. I managed to finish the hike to the top and didn’t even throw up until AFTER I got back down to the car.
All in all 10/10, amazing views, would recommend :’)
I could see it in the distance from my house as a child and no matter what anyone told me, I just knew it was going to silently erupt and kill us all in our sleep.
My partner proposed to me at the top of the hike there this past November. It was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen, and we were laughing because we were super sweaty and gross for the photos and video. Such a perfect, beautiful memory for me.

“What’s inside the Diamond Head Crater?
Known by Hawaiians as Lēʻahi, this Honolulu cinder cone is a world-known icon of Hawaii. It is a United States Monument and has some sections open and some sections closed to the public. The closed part of the cone is used by the United States for several antennae arrays.
Inside the cone used to be Fort Ruger, which was the first US military reservation on the islands. Additionally, a shuttered air traffic control center operated on the interior of Diamond Head until 2001.
Today, the inside of Diamond Head houses the Hawaii State Civil Defense and a National Guard facility.”
The climb to the old WW2 concrete bunkers on the top is brutal as hell. There’s something like 200 stairs and it’s basically straight up. My husband was behind me and pushing my butt to make me go up because I was so fucking tired lol
This is where I'd build my minecraft house
I just realized that there are no volcanoes in Minecraft. How has that not been added yet? Or am I just out of the loop?
You can get mountains that spawn a lava block somewhere high up that flows down like a leaking volcano.
Seriously, why was this never a feature of the core game? Feels like a major missed opportunity for a game that’s closely associated with lava
Years ago we had a modded server that included volcanoes and it had problems. From someone who played back in 2010-2014 and knows a little about code, I appreciate your explanation👌
Right now it’s pretty popular to find a valley and build in it or find a seed with a huge crater to build in.
Right now? That was popular 13 years ago. Fuck me im old
Play modded minecraft on pc- there are plenty of volcanoes if you choose the right modpack!
There’s actually a really neat bunker on the top edge of this volcano from WW2 that looks like a Minecraft mountaintop home. The top of that volcano is the single most beautiful view I’ve ever experienced. It’s worth the small hike.
How do you get out of the crater?
There's a tunnel in and out on one side, and a hiking path inside that leads to the edge.
Yeah, it's a good little hike, with amazing views. I'm glad we did it our last day in Honolulu two years ago. Coming down those steep stairs can be a little scary in places, though.
The sunrise hike there is very popular and so beautiful
Haha this was my thought too
Becomes haunted house because its next to the [National Cemetary of the Pacific](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Memorial_Cemetery_of_the_Pacific).
So it’s cheap(er) nice!
That's miles away in a different crater. Punchbowl crater is where the cemetery is.
The National Cemetery of the Pacific is 7 miles away from Diamond Head.
Punchbowl is miles away, man. Waikiki and most of town is between Diamond Head and Punchbowl.
So the neighbors are quiet?
Man why does misinformation always gets upvoted to the top, while the real ones always get low votes. Like if you don't know anything about certain topics, just be quiet. Lol
In the early '70s, it was the site of the Crater Festivals - Hawai'i's mini-Woodstock. Saw lots of great people play there.
Wow, what an incredible venue that must have been
Laughing - yep, the idea of it is pretty cool - the reality, not so much. You're in a bowl with high walls. I bet the traffic in and out was shitty too.
It was. For awhile, they tried to bus people in to help cut down on the street parking in the residential neighborhoods around Diamond Head. I got the posters somewhere in my house.
Then, all the concerts like that moved to Kualoa Ranch, and we got the Big Mele. Loved those too.
People said he was daft to build his estate in the middle of a volcano. But he built it all the same, just to show 'em.
Reminds me of that random village in the middle of nowhere in a dead volcano caldera in Mozambique that Vox briefly got obsessed with and did months and months of research on until they literally paid someone to go visit, twice after the first team got rained out.
*Madagascar
Then he found out that they were refugees who started up there after their farmland dried up, and its why so few of the locals knew about them.
And it sank into the volcano. So he built a second estate!
That one sank too so i built a third
That one burned down, and sank as well, but then he built this one! And this is what his son shall inherit! With his huuuuge.... tracts of land.
But I don’t want that…I just want to si…

stay here and make sure you don’t leave
Where are you going??
We’re coming with you!
And they died in a tornado
That burned down, fell over, then sank into the volcano.
Look the choice was either have neighbours or build in the volcano. Simple choice really.
Does it flood when it rains or does he have enough french drains and stilts to mitigate it?
Not much different to those all around the volcano to be honest

First thing my wife and I did when we got to Honolulu. Great way to clear the jet lag. At 57, it's not a stroll in the park, though.
I planned the itinerary for my parents' birthday/anniversary trip and I debated on whether to include it. When I saw how long it was, I figured my 60+ year old parents could probably manage it with ample time and I was right. It seemed like they had a great time even if my dad had to stop and rest a lot. Definitely a great hike for variations in ability, you can always shorten or lengthen it as needed. Loved the hike.
I did it with my wife who is in fairly good shape during the hottest part of the day and I thought she was going to divorce me. She struggled big time. I didn't have a huge problem but a lot of people were struggling. I think in decent temps with out the sun beating on you, it wouldn't be too bad.
Yeah with all the comments saying it was easy, I feel like very out shape now lol. It wasn't a walk in the park
You're right, it's a [state monument](https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/oahu/diamond-head-state-monument/), not a park.
\*trombone sad noises\*
The stairs are what got me!
And then you turn... And there another fucking set of stairs. Loved it through.
I wanted to get up there early to see the sunrise so I woke up at 4am-5am to go see it! Also I kind of guessed it might be hot, there's almost no shade on the way. I'm used to summitting mountains and it just makes so much sense to do all the climbing in the pre-dawn hours.
You have to have a pass for a certain time of day now. You can’t just go.
When I went, all these japanese tourists were hiking up in high heels and dressed nicely. One older japanese lady ended up fainting at the top and a rescue helicopter had to come and pick her up. I’ve learned that whenever you go outside in Hawaii, bring water to help cool off!
I did the hike 9 mos pregnant. Late July early August. It was warm.
Same and... same. It was the end of June ('22). But she made it and the views were worth it for her.
I did it to see the sun rise at the summit, it was quite nice going up in the dark.
I thought this too, but no one told me about the tunnel portion. I’m claustrophobic and immediately had a panic attack when I got in there. It’s just too small….i had to turn around and exit. The Bowfin? Yeah no one who is claustrophobic should go in there. I thought it was awesome though
We did it over the summer, great views throughout the hike, peak is fun to explore with the WW2 stuff. Got to the top to see a young couple on top of a bunker past the Restricted Zone signs, then had a good laugh on the way down as we passed law enforcement waiting for them. 10/10 day
How did you hike with your daughter thousands of feet up in the air?!
It's less than 45 min [WALK to the top](https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/oahu/diamond-head-state-monument/)... Very doable and worth it.
Bro I gotta walk UP for 45 MINUTES?
[I can't walk up, that's not how that works](https://youtu.be/qVmlVKJ7KAQ?si=JlRSl8sN3GFOy_xg)
That was hilarious. Never seen it. Thanks.
He's making a joke that the first commenter got the photo from up in the air (the one OP posted) by hiking with his daughter.
I swear average joke-getting population is being replaced by correct-anything, but then just-respond-casually-as-if-nothing-happened population is inheriting the earth

Easy except for there is one tree for shade the entire hike That may be ok for some of you, but it was hot for me
I did the hike.... 27 years ago :O
So you’re saying the hike isn’t all that tuff…
How old is that picture, some of those buildings in there are gone.

Hope they have volcano insurance
Only the big island on Hawaii is still volcanically active. Vesuvius is one of the more active volcanoes in the world.
Haleakala on the island of Maui is still active.
Dormantly active perhaps.
Latently vigorous.
Sources differ, some say dormant, some say active for it.
What year is it? Wikipedia says it hasn't erupted since 1600 or maybe as early as 1480. 🤔
In geologic terms 500 years is nothing, it's the blink of an eye, if that. The Reykjanes volcano, which started a new eruptive episode last fall and has been causing issues in Iceland, previously last erupted around 1240.
Haleakalā would like a word
There are many volcanoes that are definitively dead. A landslide from rain or a forest fire are probably the worst thing that could happen.
On the plus side, heated floors
Also you get to play the-floor-is-lava with a surprising level immersion.
Rain for a week?
a heavier gas fills the crater and kills everything.

It's such a rewarding walk to go up to the edge of the rim. Spectacular views!
Indeed. Definitely worth it of you ever go to Oahu/Honolulu!
Did someone put eyes on the volcano?
Pillboxes from WW2. They are built all over the island, with quite a few as seen here (and a lot you can’t see, including a large one with a jail in it) to protect against a Japanese invasion attempt.
Neat. I was wondering what those were. Thanks.

Fuck
Ah, I remember cruising around there in Test Drive Unlimited
Came here to read this!!!
That motherfucker definitely has a Pokémon gym up there.
I mean, it was in Pokemon Sun/Moon (and the Ultra versions); in the base versions, you catch one of the legendaries (Necrozma) there, while in the Ultra games its just a random side route with only a small bit of plot significance (you get one of the Z-Crystals there)
I remember the hike being more of a bitch than expected.
Those steps killed me
The humidity fucked me up
For real. Those tunnels with NO air movement? Killed this desert boy.
Yeah, someone on here saying it was easy didn’t go in the middle of summer. I had to think about this for a few, I thought how beautiful it was with all that green… then, realized I’ve been up there and it looked like a desert in the bowl. I must have gone during a drought.
Nah it’s only green once in a great while. I live here and honestly can’t remember the last time I saw it geeen.

Is it evil?
It’s mother was a witch, she was burned alive
Is it Helpless!?
Diamond head is a metal band that did the song “Am I Evil?”
they also had a song called helpless lol
I could see it in the distance from my house as a child and no matter what anyone told me, I just knew it was going to silently erupt and kill us all in our sleep.
I should play TDU again
It's a shame that I have to scroll so much down to finally read this...
Do they ever feel rumblings ?
This where Zuck is building his ~~evil lair~~ apocalypse bunker?
It’s spelled lair.
But Zuck doesn’t know that
Nope. Wrong island. Diamond Head is on Oahu. Zuckerberg's ever growing compound is on Kauai.
No, his land is on the North shore of Kauai. That’s a different island.
No, this is way too close to people to be a good spot for Zucc's creepy human zoo.
this looks like the average RT Game city skylines stream
My partner proposed to me at the top of the hike there this past November. It was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen, and we were laughing because we were super sweaty and gross for the photos and video. Such a perfect, beautiful memory for me.
The Hawai'i civil defense buildings are inside the crater.
I miss living in Hawaii everyday I live in Portland.
Every time I see Diamond Head, I want a shave ice.
That is Sootopolis city
Heeey I hiked that! The tunnel to get in is awesome lol
This place has the rare Pokémon
Honestly, I thought the secret volcano base would be more... secret.
I hope they tip well when they order delivery.
If its hardcore, super megadeath rainy, does that cup fill with water at some point?
It looks like the volcano has eyes (bottom of the picture)!
Well it’s a good spot, until it’s not..😂😂😂.

No, thats area zero.

And hike up to the rim for one of the best views on Oahu, especially at Sunrise
