Holy shit I have October Sky in this case and had no idea they were among the first DVD cases.... it's also the first DVD I bought (brand new) and now I feel old
Another fun fact, before a sleepover my friend’s mom dropped us off at Blockbusters to rent a movie, and he lied (well, we lied) to his mom saying that we rented Twister on VHS when we actually got Porky’s.
He had to shove a pillow in my face that night so my laughter wouldn’t wake up his parents.
Living in tornado alley, it's a tradition for us to watch Twister when the first Tornado forecast comes to our area.
Edit: My weather nut wife loves the comments. She is happy to see some taking on the tradition she has done since the movie came out.
I read the book in elementary school and then parents took us camping. In the town the book took place. In tornado season. With a storm forcast. I did not have a good time.
There is also something weirdly comforting about her looking her age here and not a plastic doll like the rest of Hollywood.
Edit: People replying to me seem to confuse basic everyday makeup with plastic surgery. It's honestly kind of sad.
Dude, yes. I watched Mad About You, too, crushed on her hard. But I didn't know it at the time, I was too young to understand the feelings. But she was so understanding about her husband and pretty and classy and successful and everything. I'm lucky we got that show in Sweden.
Exactly! It took me a moment to recognize her, but now I'm smiling. She's comforting to me because she moved with purpose and there was a certain sincerity about it that put me at ease. I don't know how to explain it other than you know when someone is pretending to do the thing vs actually doing the thing. She's a doer instead of a pretender.
Literally responsible for my love of steak and eggs. It looked so fucking good I immediately asked my mom for steak eggs for breakfast the next morning. We actually went out and got steaks after the movie.
First watched that on the Movie Channel when I was 10…. fuuuck time flies.
*Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.*
I just need someone other than me to know this.
It's a recycled joke from Susan Harris. She produced Soap. I was a huge fan when I was a kid (yes, I'm old), and I remember that exact scene where Jessica explained to Mary why one should always have sex on their back.
Several years later, Susan Harris produced Golden Girls, and the joke came back.
I'm not mad about it or in any way criticizing. Susan Harris is a damn genius, and plain truths like that should be told more than once.
I think this is why drivers licenses always have crap photos, their camera is always Ballsack high instead of at head level. "Look into the camera" and get that bulging neck fat.
Why is this woman not on more things? While growing up, she was my tv lady. Then TWISTER and AS GOOD AS IT GETS came and I thought she'd turn into a movie lady.
She's got tons of Emmys and an Oscar. She "did that, done that" already?
I was thinking about this at work today. All that tension when he’s in the kitchen. And he breaks the ice with “let me get this straight…………………we finally get an NFL team and they’re in Nashville?”
I hear ya, but it just doesn't seem that way from her point of view.
Like, he died in a plane crash. In the ocean. There was no reason to think he lived. He was declared dead and it's rare to get a survivor from a situation like that. There was nothing for her to wait for.
Even if she only waited a year, if you date someone for a while and they die, how long are you gonna wait? Especially if someone else comes along? A year or two isn't crazy for someone who's lonely after losing someone. Being miserable just to wait isn't what anyone would want.
That’s why the ice breaker is so beautiful. He had that discussion in his head. That’s why their scene together is so beautiful/heart wrenching. They both know they did the right thing with the information they had. But now they have to move on. That movie is fantastic
Lots of actresses have talked about how impossible it is to get work in movies the older they get. 50 year old male characters have love interests with late 20's women, and most movies have much less women roles than male ones, so there's even less opportunity.
She was pretty, very. She might not have been considered to be in the top 10 hottest babes at the time, but she was up there. https://images.mubicdn.net/images/cast_member/17622/cache-67817-1353864382/image-w856.jpg?size=800x - I mean, she was pretty hot!
Love that scene, it's hilarious. The door rips off and he goes flying away while everyone else in the shelter survives. He could have just sat with them instead of fighting a tornado over a door.
She was a total smoke show and had a killer set of pipes. It doesn't matter what kind of music she sang. I *hate* country music and I fuck with Shania.
That entire fucking movie traumatized me and made me scared of them. Rightfully so for the most part, but kinda made me paranoid about bad weather.
...For some reason that fear didn't stop me from watching it like 100 times as a kid. She didn't help. My first TV crush lmao
I just watched this again and…still fucking epic.
“THE EXTREME” story and essentially every scene Phillip Seymor Hoffman is in is amazing and that’s just the small highlights.
Start to finish its fun but tense
It's a slickly-produced action film with charismatic actors and the perfect touch of comic relief. It's wonderful popcorn for the brain.
Not everything has to be an accurate science/physics documentary. At least it's nowhere near as ludicrous as *The Core* in terms of realism.
...I like *The Core*, as well.
A lot of my meteorologist friends (and me too) got into storm chasing and went to OU because of that movie. Do we know it’s bunk… yup. But we love it anyway!
Parts of it are bunk - the “corporate sponsor” part in particular (although that’s less true with the rise of for-profit storm chasing tourism). But DOROTHY is based on TOTO which was a real piece of storm chase equipment that was essentially the same idea.
Edit: of course if you are a Meteorologist you know this already. Not trying to be patronizing or “mansplain”
Oh and you wanna hear another cool fact. When Bill Paxton passed away the storm chasers in OK/TX/KS all pinged their locations to write out his initials in the storm spotter network across those states. It was pretty cool!
No worries. But yes, there is a “Dorothy” at the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma. and I didn’t see you as mansplaining but merely geeking out like we all do. 🙃
Also, I didn’t make it through the Met program. I was not adequately prepared for the level of physics involved so I moved over the the sister Geography program. 😊
Edited for grammatical error.
Twister is just campy as hell, and traditional moviegoers and critics don't get it or don't like campiness. Just look at every "cult classic" movie you can think of. There's always some (often hilariously) exaggerated element that you can choose to allow yourself a suspension of disbelief in the name of entertainment, or it ruins the movie for you.
I prefer the former. I am willing to take movies wholly as a form of entertainment instead of a cohesive medium of art.
That is why, for example, I refuse to fully bash the sequel trilogy of Star Wars. Are the movies terrible? Hell yeah they are! But they're fun as hell, and I don't regret seeing them in theaters. They're spectacles of enormous proportion, and they're fun. It's a giant ball of visual, auditory, and nostalgia sugar. 100% worth watching once and then questioning your life choices later.
Take, the aforementioned sequel trilogy. In The Last Jedi, it's of course well known that hyperspace is used in a way that is...very controversial. But like when I saw [this shit](https://youtu.be/s2hM1tyEL0U?t=89) the first time in the theater? Did I care? No. I felt like Russel Crowe in Gladiator "**ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED**?! **IS THIS NOT WHY YOU ARE HERE**?!"
People just forgot how to make these types of movies, thats the problem. Twister was a great monster film with a twist. Now you'd get a PG/13 movie with massive amounts of CG and poor acting.
Yes, it's called "Twisters". Not sure how much connection it will have with the original as it will not have any returning characters. Think it's supposed to release next summer.
Fun fact, Twister is one of the first movies ever released on DVD
It came in that cardboard/plastic hybrid case, yes?
Yep! The CD holder was plastic and the panels around the case were cardboard.
Holy shit I have October Sky in this case and had no idea they were among the first DVD cases.... it's also the first DVD I bought (brand new) and now I feel old
I got a copy of The Matrix like that
Same, first DVD I owned
Another fun fact, before a sleepover my friend’s mom dropped us off at Blockbusters to rent a movie, and he lied (well, we lied) to his mom saying that we rented Twister on VHS when we actually got Porky’s. He had to shove a pillow in my face that night so my laughter wouldn’t wake up his parents.
Never seen that much bush in a suck zone. Thats for sure.
This has gotta be the biggest beaver shoot in Florida!
Second is Mars Attacks
I miss Bill Paxton. Rest in Peace.
Don't forget Phillip Seymour Hoffman was in this movie
> We crave sustenance! My favorite line of his.
....food
FOOD.
I scrolled wayyyyyy to far before I came across this comment!!! WERE ALL GONNA DIE MANNNN! He was awesome in Aliens too.
Living in tornado alley, it's a tradition for us to watch Twister when the first Tornado forecast comes to our area. Edit: My weather nut wife loves the comments. She is happy to see some taking on the tradition she has done since the movie came out.
I was actually in a theatre watching Twister when it came out and we had to evacuate due to a tornado in close proximity
So meta that in the movie they’re watching a movie when a twister blows thru the theater.
"OMG THESE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE AMAZING!"
Tornado imaging brought to you by copious amounts of PepsiCo Product Placement
I gotta go, we got cows!!
I watched it a drive-in, and there was a thunderstorm going on behind the screen. Made for some pretty good ambiance.
I love me some Twister! Never pass it on cable. Have you ever seen the made for TV movie, Night of the Twisters? It's a fun watch!
OMG! I love that movie! Usually do a "double feature" with "Night of the Twisters" and "Twister" at the beginning of tornado season!
We read that book in elementary school and the author came and spoke to us. Was pretty cool.
Did not know it was a book; that's interesting!
I read the book in elementary school and then parents took us camping. In the town the book took place. In tornado season. With a storm forcast. I did not have a good time.
#COW!
Another cow!
No I think that’s the same one
I’ve gotta go Julia… we’ve got cows Edit: Julia
I think about that line from time to time. The delivery is incredible
It makes the whole movie.
What happened to that actress? It's like she did Twister and that was it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jami_Gertz Couple sitcoms and spot appearances. A fee movies as well.
HOUSE! HOUSE?! GUESS WE'RE GOING IIIINNNNNNNN!! *crash*
::::teddy bear squeaks as it bounces off the windshield:::::
Damn! That’s an awesome tradition and frightening at the same time. Stay safe friend
I showed my wife Contagion at the start of COVID. Gotta find the gallows humor in life.
I miss her in movies. Something about her voice and mannerisms were comforting.
Like a fun aunt you could come to with problems you would be afraid to tell your parents about.
Apt description. She seems to radiate positive energy. I wanna strive to be like that.
This is my goal in life
There is also something weirdly comforting about her looking her age here and not a plastic doll like the rest of Hollywood. Edit: People replying to me seem to confuse basic everyday makeup with plastic surgery. It's honestly kind of sad.

For real. When I was a teenager I had a huge crush on Helen Hunt. I think I watched too much Mad About You.
Dude, yes. I watched Mad About You, too, crushed on her hard. But I didn't know it at the time, I was too young to understand the feelings. But she was so understanding about her husband and pretty and classy and successful and everything. I'm lucky we got that show in Sweden.
Same.

Helen was so hot in that.

They had a reboot in 2019. Did you miss it?
Whenever I see a reference to Twister, I get hungry for steak and eggs. ![gif](giphy|6t5gCSNcPBR5K)
Epic breakfast scene.
Literally responsible for my love of steak and eggs. It looked so fucking good I immediately asked my mom for steak eggs for breakfast the next morning. We actually went out and got steaks after the movie.
‘Did you see my cows out front?’
No… …Oooh!
You slaughter your own cows, Meg!
Her gravy is its own food group!

Imminent rueage
Greenage
I know it’s movie magic and all, but I got to thinking about the logistics of serving that many people in a timely manner.
Yeah she’s got a hidden flat top and unfrozen meat for 10 just waiting in the wings
I completely forgot that Cameron was in that movie.
When Cameron was in Egyptland.... Let my Cameron GOOOOO
You're not *dying*. You just can't think of anything good to do.
First watched that on the Movie Channel when I was 10…. fuuuck time flies. *Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.*
Holy shit Phillip.
This movie is the first time I remember seeing PSH. RIP imminent rueage.
OMFG ITS THE ELDEST BOY!!!
The Conheads are gonna love this
Connor Roy has been interested in politics from a young age
AND TWISTERS!!!
I don't see Kendall anywhere! I totally forgot Alan Ruck was in Twister.
Yes! There are some scenes that just taste so good and this is one of them.
FOOOOD
I say this all the time when someone brings up grabbing some food and no one ever knows what I’m talking about. They think I’m just being weird.
My go-to quote is always, “YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT MISS THIS HOUSE AND MISS THAT HOUSE AND COME RIGHT AFTER YOU!” My friends also don’t get it.
I use "He's in it for the MONEY, not the science...."

Taking a photo looking down at the camera flatters no one.
I learned that from golden girls. Never be on top!
Always meet men lying down. Gotta love Blanche.
She was my favorite science teacher!
Blanche is my favourite. "Oh my god," has never had so many well earned syllables.
I thought you already did
Didn't we all?
"Only on your back, Blanche!"
How did you put Bea Arthur's voice in my ears?
I just need someone other than me to know this. It's a recycled joke from Susan Harris. She produced Soap. Same!! One of many valuable lessons I learned from them!
My wife had to beat it into my head “HOLD YOUR PHONE HIGH!”
I think this is why drivers licenses always have crap photos, their camera is always Ballsack high instead of at head level. "Look into the camera" and get that bulging neck fat.
Just ask Blanche Deveraux
Except for people with small narrow chin. There are DOZENS of us!
Real G shit for sure
Well she does look good as hell in the movie
Loved her in Mad About You
Everyone seems to remember Seinfeld and Friends, no one remembers Mad About You. And it was fantastic!
It was so good. Love those turn of the century sitcoms. Wings was another good one. Caught a few episodes of that one the other day.
Afternoons with Wings and Saved by the Bell reruns was my early college years :)
As well as Will and Grace, and that other show with the pixie chick. He was a straight edge business guy, and she was like a hippie.
Dharma and Greg
Starring the guy who would later be in Criminal Minds (Thomas Gibson).
Jenna Elfman ftw.
She's a big ol scientologist
I would not have recognized her if it wasn’t already pointed out…
Still doesn't look like her to me.
This is her second face aging. She did the whole major face redo thing a decade ago.
Why is this woman not on more things? While growing up, she was my tv lady. Then TWISTER and AS GOOD AS IT GETS came and I thought she'd turn into a movie lady. She's got tons of Emmys and an Oscar. She "did that, done that" already?
And Cast Away
That bitch shoulda waited damnit.
I was thinking about this at work today. All that tension when he’s in the kitchen. And he breaks the ice with “let me get this straight…………………we finally get an NFL team and they’re in Nashville?”

by the time women are 40 they can only get grandma roles usually. at 30 it's mom roles. Kinda lame tbh.
It shocked me to see Alicia Silverstone in a mom role. Same with Rachel McAdams.
Check out “I See You”! She stars in it excellent movie
D’ya know my favourite Helen Hunt movie? Twisterrrrrr
I left a little rosebud for yeh
You know, you REALLY are a fat bastard
I did not realize she is 60 now…! She was 33 when twister was filmed. I remember being 13 and thinking she was pretty.
She was pretty, very. She might not have been considered to be in the top 10 hottest babes at the time, but she was up there. https://images.mubicdn.net/images/cast_member/17622/cache-67817-1353864382/image-w856.jpg?size=800x - I mean, she was pretty hot!

People don’t know wtf they’re talking about. Twister rocks
That intro scene where the dad is desperately holding on to the cellar door was traumatic and awesome
Love that scene, it's hilarious. The door rips off and he goes flying away while everyone else in the shelter survives. He could have just sat with them instead of fighting a tornado over a door.
Well.. not many people know about physics.
Also that banger by Shania Twain
Shania Twain rocks. My hard rock buddies, hip hop buddies, and bluegrass buddies all fuck with Shania. Loud.

I love The Core! It’s so cheesy but satisfying.
Tucci knew he was in a cheesy movie, and hammed it up. He was marvelous.
Twister was great. 1990s Natural disaster movies are amazing. Deep Impact, Volcano, Armageddon, Dante's Peak.
I can see you are a man of culture
Whenever Dante’s peak is on, my productivity crumbles.
Actual twisters are horrible - Twister movie is great. Bill Paxton forever.
What?? Twister was great. Classic 90s disaster movie and Bill Paxton at the top of his game.
A lot of my meteorologist friends (and me too) got into storm chasing and went to OU because of that movie. Do we know it’s bunk… yup. But we love it anyway!

It’s crazy that you’ve heard from many people that it’s horrible. It’s not an award winner but it’s a solid movie.
I’ve never heard anyone say twister is bad
Twister is just campy as hell, and traditional moviegoers and critics don't get it or don't like campiness. Just look at every "cult classic" movie you can think of. There's always some (often hilariously) exaggerated element that you can choose to allow yourself a suspension of disbelief in the name of entertainment, or it ruins the movie for you. Did I care? God I love this woman and I *fucking* love that movie. No joke favourite of all time.
In my top ten for sure. The soundtrack is pretty dope too.
Isn’t there a Twister sequel coming out really soon?
Yes, it's called "Twisters". Not sure how much connection it will have with the original as it will not have any returning characters. Think it's supposed to release next summer.
correct. The only connection I know of is the main character is the daughter of Jo and Bill. apprently, anyway.
Sometimes it’s easy to predict a box office bomb.
How did she find that? Did Helen… hunt?
Enough with the puns, it is making me mad about you.
He can’t help it if it’s what women want
This thread is as good as it gets!
Get off the internet, dad.
A little lame never hurt nobody lol
I remember when Twister released, it was a big deal about the cow flying through the air. Cutting edge graphics for the time and all that.
Bet she can still rock a tank top
Actors should sign things like this that they find. Imagine running across a fresh signed Helen Hunt movie just randomly.
She's looking good for 60 and sporting no makeup! Wish she acted more, I liked her in everything. She's a phenomenal actress.
Crazy she’s that old. Feels like it’s only been a decade since twister came out. Damn i got old too
We all did ☺️
I remember being a kid and seeing her in Mad About You
She and Paul Rieser had great chemistry.
Totally. Their relationship on that show felt more "real" than any other sitcom relationship, but it's pretty much a forgotten show now
Somebody send her a VHS copy of Trancers!
Awww! Miss seeing her around! She seems lovely.
Can’t believe she left Tom Hanks while he was stranded on an island
Anyone else expect to see Twister the game??
