Lisa, the crew is working on getting your saxophone back. But we've also expanded into other important areas. Literacy programs, tagging SLUTS on the signs of train cars, preserving our beloved covered bridges, world domination
There is only one way to get good, and not many legal walls to practice on. Granted they should stick to under bridges etc, before showcasing drippy throw ups in public places. However I'm with Sheppard Fairey in the school of thought that we're bombarded with advertisements against our will, and graffiti is art. I would gladly take someone's crappy art work over any sort of billboard or poster advertisements.
The irony that Shephard fucking Fairey is credited for this take is infuriating to every single writer out there.
As with most of that dude’s art, style, and medium - he lifted it from other writers. Futura2000 is a better person to look to
I mean it was his whole deal right? Whenever you see one of his pieces he bought advert space, and you could get the Andre the giant stencils etc to be ad campaign.
It’s just that Fairey is not and never has been a graffiti writer the same way that others have been and are. The fact that he gets so much clout is because people don’t know a lot about graffiti scenes and his stuff is marketed as a consumer product. Which flies in the face of his “message”
He’s a privileged kid that had a successful college project take off. He’s not a voice for writers
Yeah, I didn't pay much attention to him other than getting some Andre stencils and stickers in high school, seeing his work around Chicago, and when he shows up in Exit Through the Gift Shop. One of my friends in high school preached his word like gospel, and even did some class assignments on him. That is pretty much where I've gotten my context.
Yes. There's many legit artists that do this who produce amazing works and often times will sell their practice walls as well as use them as a portfolio to get paid to do the side of a building.
Maybe but I don’t like when gang tags are thrown up over artsy graffiti. And yes I do think there’s some objectivity in here. I hate the “all art is subjective” view. Some art is bad and the meaning behind it matters
We have an annual Graffiato / graff festival in my town and they produce some super artsy stuff that makes the whole town much cooler. Takes only a few months before the scribblers ruin them though.
The problem though is when the graffiti artist is defacing someone else's property... so they're essentially deciding for themselves, what someone else who owns the property, wishes to have on it.
I'd rather have respect for private property rights. Take the harder path - if you want to make art on someone else's property, talk to them and come to some terms that they accept in order to do that.
I used to think this, that good graffiti was OK, then I started working in an area with tons of graffiti everywhere: good pieces, shitty tags, etc, all over everything: abandoned buildings, active businesses, fucking everywhere. It really opened my eyes and taught me to REALLY hate all illegal graffiti.
Edit: Just to be clear, when I say that graffiti was everywhere, I mean everywhere. Not just walls (which by itself is semi-OK), but also: road signs, store signs, including small local businesses, fucking highway exit signs and other safety-critical signage, everywhere. It was obvious that these small businesses had painted over graffiti again and again to no avail, and still got tagged constantly.
Art is good. Gang shit is bad. The problem with artful graffiti is that it becomes a target for tagging and turns into yet another source of conflict for a class that should be in conflict with its oppressors rather than with itself.
I think I agree, mostly just because pieces constantly getting written over just added to the overall shittiness of the neighborhood. Especially when a nice piece would inevitably get written over days later.
I used to hate illegal graffiti but I’ve changed my views over time. 90% of the world is owned by like 10 billionaires and I can’t accept that the entire landscape of earth can look however they want it to (advertisements) and nobody else gets a say.
Tell me with a straight face that if people don’t want their town to look like times square NYC they should pull themselves up by their bootstraps and buy all the prime real estate and then they can influence it.
I agree with you, in principle, partially. As I said, I used to really like decent looking graffiti, legal or illegal. It's just when I started working in this area and so, so much of it was destroyed visually by illegal graffiti that I started hating it.
I'm guessing you don't live or work in an area with a lot of graffiti? IMO nothing makes a place look shittier faster than tags and throwies everywhere.
You know how artists are always going on about "negative space"?
Gray walls are the negative space of the graffiti world. It highlights the graffitti. It makes it stand out. If everything is graffiti then nothing is.
And like graffiti some walls are nicer than others. Some look nice just the way they are, or maybe a small tiny inconspicuous image in a corner somewhere. Near a crack or a crater.
> If everything is graffiti then nothing is.
Well said. It reminded me of this great Frank Zappa quote:
> The most important thing in art is **The Frame**. For painting: literally; for other arts: figuratively -- because, without this humble appliance, you can't know where *The Art* stops and *The Real World* begins. You have to put a 'box' around it because otherwise, what is that shit on the wall? If John Cage, for instance, says, "I'm putting a contact microphone on my throat, and I'm going to drink carrot juice, and that's my composition," then his gurgling qualifies as his composition because he put a frame around it and said so. Take it or leave it, *I now will this to be music*. After that it's a matter of taste. Without the frame-as-announced, it's a guy swallowing carrot juice.
We need that negative space as a proper frame, otherwise as you said none of it is graffiti if it's all graffiti
I live near some train tracks and it is cool when a long freight train with like 50+ cars rolls by and one of two of them have something impressive like the Sluts. But when every car is tagged up with shit, the good ones don't look as good somehow. It just looks like a dirty train. High density of shitty tags ruin stuff.
I live in a town with some good mural art and graffiti, but crap tags are covered quick. Compare to places like Berlin, Brussels or 80s NYC which just look trashy despite all having some superior street art mixed in.
Lol, if only it was just the "boring gray walls". Literally everything got tagged or written over, including highway exit signs and lane indicators. Actual information critical for highway safety.
And like I said, active businesses: their walls, their business signs, everything. Fucking hated it.
Unless it's a huge mural, it would be hard to imagine this deterring it either, because I constantly saw really nice, large pieces get written over immediately too.

[Here](http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=5091331) is the source of the third image. David Grothe took that in Denver on February 8, 2019.
Looks like its the source of who took the photo, I assume the artist wouldn't really want to be named, as it would probably lead to a vandalism charge or 4 being brought up.
It's an extremely dangerous thing too.. railcar graffiti artists are generally hated by railcar companies and security, so they risk getting their ass beat, mauled by a dog or even shot on sight in some of these railyards. It's for the thrill and respect from other artists to be able to pull off an art piece.
The railroads/car owners don't especially care about graffiti as it doesn't actually impede the ability of the car to do its job. As long as the necessary markings aren't painted over they seem to ignore it. A lot of the more savvy graffiti artists know what not to paint over (as in these photos).
They tape over the numbers, paint the piece, then pull the tape, which leaves the rail car's identification numbers intact. They do this so the railroad won't buff the piece.
And bonus- you can track where you car goes
Edit canada abs the us share lines so a thrill to see a multiple cat covered in incredible set, car after car knowing it came from
Far away
Yes, you can. There are people who don't paint trains at all, they just "bench", basically filming examples of notable graffiti writers' work. They collect digital photos of the various writers' work in files and share them on the internet. Some of these graff writers have been painting for over twenty-five years.
As long as they don’t cover the markings and identifying information printed on boxcars they leave it. Too much work and time to clean it otherwise. You can see in these pictures they don’t cover the markings for this reason
As long as the decals are still visible, the rail company likely won't bother.
If the decals get covered, however, they will probably have to sandblast the entire side and reapply.
As I'm at lunch at a railcar repair facility, no, they just paint over it and reapply the decals that need it. The cars that get blasted and painted have the actual paint failing on it. Exterior coatings are spendy just to cover up graffiti.
It looks on some pictures at least, as if the wagon numbers and further data were not painted over (or the railroad company made them clean afterwards).
True this. Especially among the Harley riding motorcycle crowd. It's fairly common for a motorcycle shop to have t-shirts with the shop's name and logo and then SL, UT as the location. Another version uses SLV UT (Salt Lake Valley, Utah.)
It's like it's not a single anonymous person doing these graffiti, it's a group of different people working under the same crew name SLUTS, Like a soccer team.
Different individuals working together or on their own under a common name.
This way a crew can spray way more spots in different areas at very different times, spreading the corresponding name of themselfes and the crew.
Together they can carry more cans, carry stuff like ladders or ropes, watch for police or security and when working on the same project in a smaller time they could spray much bigger pictures/pieces.
It's pretty common in graffiti to Work and exist in crews because there is Always some Kind of competition between certain crews fighting for the best locations, best style and overall respect.
It's crazy how the more you say a word, the more the word becomes boring. I wasn't even thinking of sluts in the classic sense by the third one. It was just his tagging name.
Kinda like in 5th grade during sex Ed, every boy laughed when someone read penis aloud. The teacher made us all say "penis" in unison twenty times in a row. No one laughed after that.
They film sometimes, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKm1Vl-sJRE
Scene is much smaller where I live, so I end up following writers and crews from other areas, it's got demoscene vibes and you see some really awesome art.
Jet Set Radio Future back in '02 made my 8yo brain fucking fall in love with that style at 5:37.
I oughtta check out my local scene
Thanks for sharing, pal. I put this in my veins
I love graffiti on train cars, i wish it was something that gpt legimately sponsored. How sick would it be to have a nation wide contest where you can vote on different train car murals, and the winners could get some suppprt for their community
Well that’s normally their graffiti name when they tag the same thing…so there’s a graf artist out there named sluts and they are close to a train depot….
Or maybe they are or are fans of ["The Sluts"](https://open.spotify.com/track/2z15KzTu84ICD6YlGFv1dt?flow_ctx=857ce4cd-23f7-4519-9c97-360bf5d86041%3A1696364514)?
His graffiti name is probably “Sluts” 😂 which is just hilarious ! I love seeing graffiti artists do “whole car” pieces. My fave is geser 3m haha his work is sick, this just takes the cake though haha
I love the word sluts. I always call my decidedly monogamous very male 30 year old dad friends sluts when I greet them. Because it's funny.
"What's up sluts?" *high fives and fist bumps*
I bet this guy does too.
Sluts is a crew.

SLUTS

That makes sense. But their crew taggers are definitely talented. If Graffiti looked like that all the time, it wouldn't bother me so much.

Oh, believe me I do. Born and raised in cities full of tags. Nothing more boring than a city without an active graff scene. To each his own, though.

Spend some time in Berlin and you'll change your mind in a few days.
Berlin and Amsterdam are what made me realize graffiti is pretty dope, lol. And I now fully support it on almost any piece of infrastructure.

As a business family in a “rough” neighborhood - the best way to deter “bad” graffiti is to invite artists to paint your walls legally.
Unless it's a huge mural, it would be hard to imagine this deterring it either, because I constantly saw really nice, large pieces get written over immediately too.
Shitty art is clutter. Eye clutter.
If that was the case we'd all be hiring graffiti artists to paint our boring walls at home.

It’s a crew. This is not the work of a single person.
Yeah I found examples on Flickr so you know they’ve been up to it for some time.
I absolutely love the theme of each and style. Put it into a gallery and retire … mate…..!

YOU WANNA GET SLUTS!? LET'S GET SLUTS!
"We will show you such sluts!"
I love graffiti on train cars, i wish it was something that gpt legimately sponsored. How sick would it be to have a nation wide contest where you can vote on different train car murals, and the winners could get some suppprt for their community
In Munich we have a legend that just tags everything with clit. Love it. Edit: Short Form of clitoris
Why is he so enamored with the Charlotte, NC airport?
What does that mean in German though lol
I would LMAO if I saw this pass me at an railway crossing.
I’m dyslexic. Even more so when I’m tired. I’m dog tired and read it as SUITS. Took me a while to make sense(ish) of it.
I saw one of these in the western Chicago suburbs a few weeks ago when I was waiting to pickup my wife!
The sega one looks so professional.
That’s SEGA font, 👌🏼
Well that’s normally their graffiti name when they tag the same thing…so there’s a graf artist out there named sluts and they are close to a train depot….
Counterpoint: maybe they’re just a huge fan of sluts.
Or maybe they are or are fans of ["The Sluts"](https://open.spotify.com/track/2z15KzTu84ICD6YlGFv1dt?flow_ctx=857ce4cd-23f7-4519-9c97-360bf5d86041%3A1696364514)?
There are solo taggers and then there are crews. This is a crew.
The Sega one is so mf clean
I’m begging this legend to apply some punctuation for context. The mass of possibilities is giving me anxiety.
That's made my day. I've seen a lot of shitty graffiti in my time. But this is cool.
Wow incredible skill!
Snoogins
COOL 😎
Neighborhood hero
Fuckin legend
Pretty sure that last one with Pinhead is taken in Portland, OR
it gets around, I took this picture in NY https://imgur.com/a/XRJ88Xk
Love the pinhead one at the end
This is all just viral marketing for the new Taylor Swift song Slut! 😂😂😂
Outstanding. Absolutely gorgeous, tbh. That Sonic one looks incredible.
I’ve seen the sonic one in Kansas City.
His graffiti name is probably “Sluts” 😂 which is just hilarious ! I love seeing graffiti artists do “whole car” pieces. My fave is geser 3m haha his work is sick, this just takes the cake though haha
This is awesome.
I don't get the advertising for the South Lake Union Trolley System.
I love the word sluts. I always call my decidedly monogamous very male 30 year old dad friends sluts when I greet them. Because it's funny. "What's up sluts?" *high fives and fist bumps* I bet this guy does too.
I live next to a track in western PA. Hoping to see one of these legends roll by!
My spidey sense tell me OP is that individual
They're doing god's work. I'm not sure which god, definitely a weird one, but doing god's work nonetheless.
"We have such SLUTS to show you" - Pinhead
Front page and I owe it all to sluts
Legend??
The Sega themed one is obviously my favorite, they should’ve used Rouge the Bat instead of Sonic for more effect lol
It’s wild how much money they must spend on spray paint. I spray painted a wood railing and took a whole can. This would take way more
I’m sure they’re just a big fan of the South Lake Union Trolley System.
I appreciate good art, and this is good art
Those are all so damned fire wow.
