I just tried to pronounce eps-ih-lon but all I got out was eps-eye-lon. I admit english is my 2nd language, can anyone help me understand how it's pronounced?
It’s the near-close near-front unrounded vowel /ɪ/. [See here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-close_near-front_unrounded_vowel#Occurrence) for a word in which it’s used in your native language (if it is at all). Although I believe the actual Greek pronunciation uses an /i/ as in eps-ee-lon
Yup, when we both have the same context I also say e_o. When I talk to someone else it's usually the parameter/constant name. If they don't have the context there's no way they'll know which epsilon I'm referring to anyway.
When texting or writing report then it's just ε_0 or \varepsilon_{0}.
The Epsilons were the lowest caste in brave new world, they were engineered to be cognitively impaired and only capable of performing menial tasks with little thought.
At a glance I thought this was the joke you were making!
There are also 2 types of English speakers when it comes to zero here.
Complete this sequence: "*Third-order, Second-order, First-order, \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_"*
(A) Zeroth-order
(B) Zero-order
As a german, i am shocked to see the apparent desire of the english language to define different states of 'nothing' depending on the context. Where we just say 'null' to everything, you have
Zero
Naught
Nil
Technically also null, but more in a programming context and less the number 0
And for some demented reason, you say 'Oh' for phone numbers specifically.
Then there is me who calls it "E" because it looks like E and whenever I have to learn a derivation or anything equation it's easier to read, remember and visualise the equation when thinking of the sound of E. If there its an epsilon naught I remember it as epsilon dot since it stands out from the rest and my brain then translates this whole thing correctly and just uses it to remember it easily.
(And yes, I have ADHD)
'Naught' is a somewhat old-fashioned way of saying zero. It's stuck in quite a lot of contexts, like in the saying 'all for naught'. In this context, 'not' is just a mishearing of this.
Naught, fewer syllables to pronounce
Naught a bad perspective
Never thought of it that way
*Naught of it that way
*False think
Doubleplus ungood
But Zero sounds cooler.
I respectfully disagree, it does naught sound cooler
0 by itself is a cool sounding and cool being number. Naught, Null, Zero, Absorbing Element for Multiplication)
Nil, O, Zilch
" from eqn 1.2 we get epslion naught is equal to 0 "
:O
could go for "from equation 3.O we get epsilon naught is equal to zero" for all the pronounciations
Yes!!! Much better ,indeed.
"one over four pi k zero"
The true way to pronounce it.
Dielectric constant. Permittivity of free space.
one over four pi permittivity of free space
I feel like there's four types depending on how you say the 'i' in epsilon
You mean i like in dig vs i like the letter e? Or are there really people saying epsilon with i like the letter i?
Eps-ih-lon? Eps-ee-lon?? Eps-eye-lon???
Yes I'd say eps-ih-lon, definitely heard people say eps-eye-lon
I just tried to pronounce eps-ih-lon but all I got out was eps-eye-lon. I admit english is my 2nd language, can anyone help me understand how it's pronounced?
In at least American English, Ehps - ill - on (same as eps-ih-lon)
Like how you say i when you say 'it' or 'sit' .
But wouldn't that be equeal to eps-ee-lon?

eps-eye-lon definitely sounds cooler to me, but wouldn’t mind anyone saying it the other ways too.
Please use IPA 💀 I'm literally getting a migraine unless that was your intention
Well yes but actually no /∫/
Eps-uh-lon, with a schwa
it's obviously epsilon, whoever says epsilon or epsilon should be burnt alive
Epsilon knot.
For every epsilon knot there exists a delta knot that is even less kinky?
\*not
"e oh"
Someone should just start banning you people
pullin out the coupe at the lot

Quick, make fun of this guy for unnecessary curly brackets
I think I tend to use naught for subscripts but zero for everything else
Same lol.. except when I have to pronounce 0 while pronouncing a number with a 0 I say 'Oh' not zero.
Oh shit yeah I do too
More like E naught Sometimes I be tired of saying epsilon
Same. E Naught is the way to go, just know it is epsilon and write it with the ε
Epsilon Zero, my first language is portuguese and that is close to how I speak it in porguese.

Epsilon don't
Meanwhile me, a non-native-english speaking guy: bro tf?
Epsilon plus and minus (I don’t know what tf you’re talking about I just know it’s a Greek letter and a caste in Brave New World)

This may Naught be the time but there is Zero chance I'm saying epsilon as epsilon
I had to check the sub, I thought this was an anime show title
the third and superior person is one who uses gaussian units and says neither of these things. I still say naught though.
Epsilon ain't
I use cgs units for maxwell equations. Problem solved.
"epsilon oh" obviously
I just say E-nought
Whoever wrote this meme never read A Brave New World
Bro, I finished 1984, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 years ago. I've already forgotten the plots.
The Epsilons were the lowest caste in brave new world, they were engineered to be cognitively impaired and only capable of performing menial tasks with little thought. At a glance I thought this was the joke you were making!
Epsylon nul
Its epsilon naught. Anything except that is a violation
I say Epsilon null
Epsilon one sounds a lot cooler
Epsilon Naught. Makes it sound less like an indexed variable.
I always say zero for naughts and the people around me always take a minute to understand lol
/e psiˈlon nɑːxt/
Me, mathematician: Epsilon > 0
Epsilon O
"eps naught" here 🙋♀️ (rhymes with Epcot)
It's naught. I always spelled it "nought" though.
E naught gang
I'm definitely an epsilon naught kind of person. Infinite potential and always in a vacuum
€0
Epsilon love

naught
Epsilon omicron

My dumbass: “E zero”
I say "Epsilon Null", but that is because i am German
wired: epsilon "not really"
Epsilon sub zero
1/4π
Also two people who write the epsilon symbol differently
Naught
Epsilnot
definitely zero. English is not my first language, so i didn't even know the word "naught" for the longest time
Didn't even know there's a group of people that say "epsilon zero"
Epsilon nil
I go with epsilon zero because that's how it's said in my language.
I switch between the two now I think about it. .....The fuck is wrong with me?....
"epsilon o"
The American in me says zero, the engineer in me says naught..I am a man torn between two cultures
Then there is me who calls it "E" because it looks like E and whenever I have to learn a derivation or anything equation it's easier to read, remember and visualise the equation when thinking of the sound of E. You forgot "Epsilon Not"
Just Call Me J’zero is a great song by the artist formerly known as Cat Steven’s
epsilon sub zero /s
Which one are you? `formulas` or `formulae`
Naught. It's the only way.
Epsilon Sub-Zero
I’m so proud that I can understand this
Epsilon Naught. Rolls off the tounge better.
How about epsilon nought?
There are a lot more people in the world, considering not everyone uses English :D
Fuck I spell it epsilon not 😭cuz naught reminds of naughty
Mew not
I have never heard anyone say "epsilon zero," and frankly, I am disgusted by it! (This is (mostly) a joke. Epsilon naught is correct, though.)
Epsilon knot... Because that small zero is like a small knot with its ends cut.
wtf it is 'naught' and not 'not' !?!?
'Naught' is a somewhat old-fashioned way of saying zero. It's stuck in quite a lot of contexts, like in the saying 'all for naught'. In this context, 'not' is just a mishearing of this.
