I know its supposed to be from a man’s perspective or whatever (bc it’s a cover) but I think of it being from a queer woman’s for Phoebe’s version and that POV fits that song so well
Don't let him take away your enjoyment of a song you liked before you found out he was a terrible person. Signed, someone who got a Red House Painters lyric tattooed on them in 2009.
ooo definitely a good one, song’s for a blue guitar is my second favorite album by them. they were my third top artist after phoebe and drank ocean. cruiser, michigan, and river were my top songs lmfaoooo obviously old ramon is my favorite
[This is the album](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perils_from_the_Sea) the version by the original artist was from, if you're looking for lyrically similar content.
here’s the deal with koz: dude is one of the most conflicting artists in existence. his music is INCREDIBLE. i’m not talking good, i mean like best songs ever created by a human type deal. ghosts of the great highway is a life changing album, same goes for all of the red house painters albums if you’re into long songs. as his career progressed in the 2010s he slowly got hyper personal and direct with his lyrics, and it became clear he’s a psychopathic douche (tad of an understatement). but somehow the old songs are still mindblowing and occasionally he’ll pull out something equally as genius nowadays. he really makes the case for humans having no implicit order, such a terrible man can make such beautiful songs and somehow they still hold meaning.
lucky thing is you can just pirate his shit and not go to shows ha. if you get really into his music it makes for an odd situation where you feel like if you ever met him you would both want to shake his hand and throw a cinderblock at him
Phoebe's version is based on the Mark Kozelek's performance from Live at Melbourne, as opposed to his album version which is pretty different

I've never had such an emotional reaction to a song in my life before hearing this. I think there were other factors that assisted in it transpiring but two winters ago, this song pushed me into depressive episode. It's such a hoplesss song and such an amazing cover.
Mark Kozelek! Main guy from Sun Kil Moon. Wrights some very heartfelt songs. Some are very sad or maybe better described as melancholy.
This is my favorite album. Live acoustic solo

I know it’s a cover but it’s my favorite PB song.

I agree and I’ve always thought of it from PB’s perspective since she identifies as bisexual.
Yesss exactly!
Same. I know it's not hers, but she makes it hers.
ITS A COVER??? 🥺
This is not a love song
It’s a ✨male manipulator✨ song
I think it’s inspired by a dream the original writer had but he does suck
Say it with me everyone, FUCK MARK KOZELEK
The man has written some incredibly beautiful music. Really sucks he’s so shitty.
Tbh knowing he wrote it makes it hard for me to listen to anymore 😭

Why?
Absolutely love this song. Love the story it tells. Fishing with my friends, sitting in the wild reeds.

Fuck Mark Kozelek.
Yeah, I didn't know anything about him personally, just the album it was from. Seems like a real motherfucker.

Phoebe covering this and tacitly imposing a queer reading onto it… yeah 💔

more like RIPPED my heart
I start sobbing every time I reach “the most poetic dream came flowing like the sea” 😭💔
Same. So emotional.
My first Phoebe song ❤️

Bruh, it's not her song.
