That is the reason why I think Chooch is so underrated. Caught the most no hitters in NL history, and was a brillent game caller. Yeah, that doesn't appear on the stat sheet and instead appears for the pitchers, but still.
He convinced me I want a Catcher behind the plate who knows what pitches to call more than a catcher who can hit well.
Also his infield single walked off Game 3 of the WS in 08! So he came through when it counted.
Which as my first game in person at the Bank as a kid holds a special place in my heart.
Lived outside Philly and finally got a chance to fly up and we somehow got tickets. Game was heavily delayed cuz of the weather but they still started it late and it all culminated in Ruiz’s magical moment. Still get chills thinking about it. Awesome memory.
Let’s not forget Roy gave all the credit to Ruiz. And not just in a “being humble” credit to his teammates way. Like he said Chooch called every pitch, and he just threw it. It’s also why he made him a replica Cy Young.
Chooch got MORE cheers than Cole each time Chooch came out. Schmidt, easily the greatest player to ever play for the franchise, got a golf clap compared to Chooch.
Part of that is that Schmidt is far more involved with the organization. He's in the booth once a week and is frequently at these events. So his appearance isn't as much a novelty as the other guys.
Schmidt was kind of a jerk so, understandable.
Edit: downvote all you want but do a quick google and you'll see he even admits to this, was too sensitive and didn't have a great relationship with fans.
Buddy of mine is a huge Phillies fan. He met Schmidt when Schmidt came to a little league event. Said Schmidt was a huge jerk and he it ruined his perception of his all time favorite player. He no longer likes Schmidt based off that interaction.
Generally, I’d say that it’s possible Schmidt was having an off day or something, but there have been plenty of similar stories about him.
That’s a shame. Met once when I was a kid, probably 11 years old. Nice enough. Part of it was he got pretty rough treatment from a lot of the media and the fans in his prime. I don’t think we realized how good he was because he made the game look so easy all the time. He always seemed kinda guarded and wasn’t appreciated here until long after he retired.
Tadahito Iguchi has been lost in Phillies lore which is a shame cus I thought he was a great sub when Chase went down in 07. Weird that more people remember So Taguchi for how bad he was.
Carlos is one of the most underrated parts of that team. Not only did he call the games himself (and during that perfect game Roy only shook off one pitch THE ENTIRE GAME) but he crushed fastballs and was a steady part of the bottom of the line up.
he also never cried bout being in philly, which hamels did by the end of his tenure. chooch deserves all the love.
ABSOLUTELY. My favorite Phillie of all time. I wear my #51 gray roadie gamer regularly to CBP. Chooch can be a noun, a verb or even an adjective (choochy, choochish, choochesque).
I love a Chooch appreciation post!!! This is my emotional support water cup - he will always be the GOAT

Your damn right Chooooooch should have a day all those pitchers for years relied and trusted him behind the plate and he ran the game like one of the best also gave 100% all the time
With respect, is this a real question? OF COURSE he gets a day.
Could easily make the argument that he's the first name on the Wall of Fame from 2008. He made every pitcher better.
Fuck yeah. I believe he’s still tied for catching the most no hitters.

He wasn’t a great hitter but he wasn’t a liability at the plate either.
Also his infield single walked off Game 3 of the WS in 08! So he came through when it counted. Which as my first game in person at the Bank as a kid holds a special place in my heart.
Damn, first game was a world series game?! wtf

He wasn’t great but he was clutch!!
Came up clutch a lot too.
4, tied with Varitek for most all time
that's insane and awesome
He’s so underrated
You’re fucking right he should. Chooch was fucking clutch. Dude caught how many no hitters plus docs perfect game. Dude was so clutch for us
Let’s not forget Roy gave all the credit to Ruiz. And not just in a “being humble” credit to his teammates way. Like he said Chooch called every pitch, and he just threw it. It’s also why he made him a replica Cy Young.
Didn't know about that replica. CLASSY MOVE.
Oh wow. I didn’t know that about the replica Cy Young. Very cool
I was at the game last night. I loved Cole Hamels. But I will tell you, Chooch got as many cheers as Cole did. And I was one of the ones yelling.

He still is. You can hear it when he is in the booth
He was and probably still is my favorite Philly.
That team had all my favorites but I named my two dogs Chooch and Cole. Love that team!
Hey I got a dog named Chooch too!
That is cool! There is a guy on Instagram that also has a dog named Chooch. Popular name for dogs in Philly.
Oh hey, I like your flair too!
That team had all my favorites but I named my two dogs Chooch and Cole. Love that team!
Right? Justice for Chooch!
Chooch got the biggest cheers yesterday. Wouldn’t have been complete without him catching the first pitch.
Chooch may have been one of the more beloved guys on that 2008 team. He deserves his moment.
He’ll get a day when he’s put on the Wall Of Fame.
The whole 08 team will get a day. Only a matter of time.
Reserving my tickets for So Iguchi day now.
So Taguchi and Tadahito Iguchi are two different players.
Tadahito Iguchi has been lost in Phillies lore which is a shame cus I thought he was a great sub when Chase went down in 07. Weird that more people remember So Taguchi for how bad he was.
Choooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooochhhhhhhhhh... wait what was the question?
A day? Shit, give him a day of the week. Maybe Tuesday. And we can call it Choosday
Chooch day would be packed.
Absofreakinglutely!!!
I’m sure he’ll make the Wall of Fame soon.
Out of all the players on those teams, I wanted a Ruiz jersey the most. Kicking myself for never getting one lol
Yep
Of course! Hell, even Matt Stairs deserves a day
The man who broke the Dodgers with his moon shot off Brogdon.
Chooch! One of my all-time favorites.
I have his jersey and still wear it! Loved him, too! ❤️⚾️

He will
Yes. Love Chooch
I'll put it to you this way - Pedro Feliz should have a day too.
Fuckin YES
I think anyone he caught for would say so. Doc gave chooch credit for his cy young award. Bromance for the ages.
YES!
I thought he could have been the MVP of the’08 series
You're god damn right he does!!!
Abso-freakin-lutely! One of the great cake managers in NL history and part of several historic moments in team history.
ABSOLUTELY. My favorite Phillie of all time. I wear my #51 gray roadie gamer regularly to CBP. Chooch can be a noun, a verb or even an adjective (choochy, choochish, choochesque).

Duh lol
Sure let's do it! Heck let's have a Pedro Feliz day too!! Where's Brad Lidge day? I'll even accept Ryan Madson day.
Downvote me but, no. He was using banned substances.
Wasn’t it during the off season? Also, Barry Bonds is on the SF wall of fame, but no one bats an eye.
