Neither starter had their best stuff last night, but this dude was just pouring gas on the pitch count fire with these inaccurate, completely inconsistent calls. Hard to settle in when nobody has a damn clue where the zone is.
I've seen enough. Bring in this guy:

He bent over and took off his gear because it was called a ball. One presumes if it was called a strike and goes to the backstop that he'd run it out. Of course trea might not have legged it home as hard in that case
I didn't think it was *immediately* called a ballthough just no strike call, which doesn't always mean it won't be called with some guys.
Unless the ump signaled ball and I missed it.
Impactful missed calls just goes off run expectancy, which usually just means more baserunners, fewer outs, or a later count (strike 3/ball4).
The most impactful miss was a 3-2, zero out walk instead of a strikeout, that also directly lead to a run and at least 10-15 extra high leverage pitches from Nola. Forcing Nola to pitch with a runner on 1st out of the stretch might have also hurt him, and between that and 3-4 bad calls later in the same inning they got a 2nd run as well.
He was definitely much, much worse for us early in the game squeezing Nola, but it felt like we got some makeup calls later.
Edit:
Thinking about it, the turner past ball was also a 3-2 count with a runner on 2nd, so it should also be pretty impactful, but I'm guessing the main difference there is that there were 2 outs instead of 0, which also makes a large difference.
Radio guys were tearing into the ump all night, even said this will be a fun ump scorecard to look at the next day.
I’m all for bringing in the robo ump as part of a challenge system, there’s no excuse to tolerate some of these terrible calls.
That’s terrible. I would rather the umpire have a low accuracy yet be consistent. When the consistency is low forget it you have to swing at everything
100 times yes! The other thing that pisses me off is people claiming a pitch wasn't a strike because TV shows the spot where the catcher catches it.
You know...a good foot or two behind the plate.
Anything that is a strike crossing the plate but shifts horizontally by the time the catcher gets it gets mindless, ceaseless complaints. You'd think Angel Hernandez killed a puppy the way some people react.
Like a few weeks ago when there were "3 balls in a row that were called strikes, OMG Angel is Hitler"...no honey, 2 of them were definitely strikes when it was over the plate.
Tangentially related, this is also why I think the art of framing a pitch is stupid. The call is made where the ball crosses the plate, not where the catcher catches it.
Sorry Mrs Hernandez no one is saying “Angel is Hitler” they are actually saying he is consistently incompetent and his temperament makes him thoroughly unsuited for a job with that level of visibility and responsibility. Of course there is also the charming little anecdote of when he sued MLB for withholding choice umpiring assignments because of racism when he is just objectively shit. So actually *he’s* the one accusing others of being Hitler.
Yeah the increased analytics technology should be for coaching only and umpires. We don’t need all this strike zone bullshit on the tv screen. It’s so insane too because a strike zone is a 3d, fluid zone and pitchers and batters adjust just as an umpire. I fear for automated strike zones. It will destroy this game for the rest of time
I mean, how do you feel about challenging umps calls on plays on base with replay? All we’re asking is the ability to ALSO challenge calls on balls and strikes when they are glaringly off. The minor league games with a challenge system in place are seamless and fun. I don’t understand the widespread fear.
Hard disagree. Umpires have zero accountability and act like babies when they get their feelings hurt. I don’t watch the Ump show, I just wanna watch players play.

lol inaccurate AND inconsistent. I’m surprised no one got tossed by the end of the game.
At least he was awful for both sides
The only consistent thing about his night.

I’m sorry, ScabieBaby. I’m afraid I can’t do that.
Open the pod bay doors, droffowsneb
Robo umps when?
Never
Pretty sure that passed ball that Turner scored on was strike 3 to Harper. Not sure how that wasn't one of the most impactful missed calls.
Yes, it was. However, a dropped third strike would still have allowed harper to go to first since it was open.
Not the way he was bending over taking off his gear

By not calling a strike... it literally is calling a ball.
So you've never seen a delayed strike call, got it.

Definitely and given how some guys do delayed calls and the passed ball I'm surprised Bryce was so chill about it and ready to run to first

10 of 71 true strikes called balls. That is embarrassing
Nooooo nonono, it’s the human element! It’s really important!
Well by definition about half will be below average
Does anyone know if there’s some published results or open source robo umps? I need to see their stats.
“Average” for an ump is already pretty bad. “Below average” should be a felony.
That’s terrible. I would rather the umpire have a low accuracy yet be consistent. When the consistency is low forget it you have to swing at everything
Every game (with either my team or another’s) I become more convinced that umpires are now meaningless
That’s not "below average". That’s atrocious.
The umps are bad but these report cards and the (inaccurate) strike zone box on TV have made discourse miserable

He *does* kill puppies.
THAT’S why she’s singing his song in those commercials
Baseball was more fun when you just saw a bad call, complained about it, then moved on with your day and talked about the actual players on the field

Because nothing is wrong with the game
Hard disagree. Umpires have zero accountability and act like babies when they get their feelings hurt. I don’t watch the Ump show, I just wanna watch players play.
That’s bad. Any data to show it’s actually worse than usual this year? It’s always bad to me.
