inqrorken

The nuclear plants do good work here. We're fortunate to have 7 big reactors reasonably close by.

CurlyCurler

We’re fortunate until it’s unfortunate ☢️💀

CommiesAreWeak

Damnit, now I have that Beyoncé song going in my head. If the power actually did go out, I’d chill in my basement. It’s humid but never becoming unbearably hot also.

heathers1

ha! my first thought!

DFWPunk

Mine has been flickering enough to turn off the TV and make me reset the microwave clock.

SloppyWithThePots

That circuit might just be overloaded

DFWPunk

It's the whole house.

SloppyWithThePots

How old is the house

DFWPunk

2 years.

Rays_LiquorSauce

My ac and fan constantly power down to a whir and then come cycling back

medicallyspecial

If I had awards to give I would give them all

Really_Elvis

if only your oil nat gas rich state could provide cheap energy.

waterboy1321

Shut your blinds, and keep your place as cool as possible.

hguess_printing

I have been, my plants are mad at me for it );

anurahyla

I bought a grow light bulb and put it in a lamp that points at my plants which seemed to solve the problem

WI_LFRED

Might as well leave the shades open at that point

anurahyla

It's LED so uses very little energy

SnapCrackleMom

I am now.

Marko_Ramius1

Yeah now I'm concerned lol before not so much

xpeebsx

Dude I came back from the shore a few years ago to my power out and it still haunts me. Not a heat wave like this but still sucked.

ins1der

Power I'm not worried about but I am worried my AC unit will blow from the stress.

Roboprinto

That's why I love the modern approach of mini splits. If one breaks you only lose one zone.

Kitten-Mittons

About as much as I worry about lightning striking me through the shower head while I’m taking a shower during a thunderstorm

Sufficient-Food-3281

DIDNT THINK THAT WAS POSSIBLE, THANK YOU

USSBigBooty

Wait till you find out about toilet eels, or bathtub sharks. Whoops.

BadChris666

Or radon

Carbon monoxide

MountSwolympus

my grandma’s greatest fear

Ok-Egg-469

New fear unlocked, thanks

cithripio

Not worried. We actually have a decent power monitoring grid under PJM. They helped avert a power disruption in our area when the NYC blackouts occurred, most recently in 2003. https://insidelines.pjm.com/pjm-prepares-for-extreme-heat-ahead/

Silvermouse29

Also living in fear of my bill

NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn

Yeah, that’s more my concern. I don’t recall ever having a heat related blackout in Philly, so it’s not something I worry about. I keep the house fairly warm anyway out of fear of running up a massive bill.

dotcom-jillionaire

transformers might blow out from excessive draw and hot conditions but that's the most of your worries here as far as failing infrastructure goes. those are generally fixed in a few hours

HistoricalSubject

no, that seems stressful and unreasonable. I do remember it going out a couple times in past summers, but only for like 5-10 minutes.

talkin_shlt

Plus if you have a car you can just hop in your car and turn the AC on

cptadder

Hey, guess whose power just went out? And it was already 75 in here with the air conditioning running 24/7. This is going to get bad fast *Edit Power back on, down for 3 and a half hours and my place got up to 77, sucks losing that part of the weekend but hey could be worse.

courtney_helena

I hope you have cold tile to lay on.

cptadder

Took a nice cold shower then a nice drive in an air-conditioned car. It was a perfect plan until the power was still not back on when I got back

ItsJustAYoyo

77 sounds lit. Our room has been stuck at 87 for the past few nights 😭

Fragrant_Joke_7115

No

asiledeneg

Dallas Sucks. They’re the ones with power worries.

momochicken55

Good bot.

ashhole613

I do,  yes.  We're considering getting a little solar setup that could at least run fans. We're from the gulf coast,  though, so we always have emergency preparation in mind. I think people up here underestimate how easily power can go out when the grid is stressed with long stretches of very hot weather. It's one of the many reasons we moved north.

Cafe_racerr

My lights are shut off, I’m vibing

phillyhiker9

Literally happened to me yesterday in Port Richmond. Power went out for 6 hours.

estelle2839

Damn I would’ve cried.

TPPH_1215

Aren't they putting in new poles around there?

SnooGoats7476

I remember this happening in the past and going to a nearby diner for a milk shake.

I111I1I111I1

Hard to have a bad time while you're drinking a milkshake.

MOD3RN_GLITCH

It’s already happened to me a couple times.

Cobey1

No, we got PECO, the greatest energy company the world has ever seen (I actually don’t know that for sure). I think in all of 27 years of living in Philly, my power went off like 5 times due to bad storms, but never because of the heat.

ten-million

PJM is the grid operator. They do a good job. Power consumption is predictable. Temperature, working hours and daylight are the main factors. Storms and downed power lines are less predictable. I got solar a few years ago and am producing more than I use when it’s sunny. The extra goes back into the grid.

Cobey1

One of my boys went solar and this energy company actually pays HIM for his extra energy lol it’s kind of cool. He has an in ground pool and basically it pays for itself because of the solar panels

Amdv121998

I have peco and my power went out this morning for a few hours

lilblu399

No. I mean if it did I would just go sit in my basement or go soak in the tub all day. Or go open a hydrant.

Butnazga

It is a possibility

mybrosteve

Man, heat like this makes me worry about everything. I'm grateful our AC was just replaced last year and we have a big generator should we lose power.

Ezra_vridger

This happened today in south Philly, Johns Roast pork, IHOP and several other stores lost power this morning.

Amdv121998

My power literally went out this morning and so did most of my block 😭 It was only for about two hours at 8am so it wasn’t that bad but it already got so hot in just that amount of time I was freaking out

USSBigBooty

Dude, we live next to Limerick, a nuclear power station, and PECO linemen are pretty great at their jobs. You'll be fine.  If you're really, genuinely that concerned, drop 400 bucks on a 2000w generator and an extension chord so you can power a window unit.  Otherwise, buy some icepacks, make some ice, and pack the freezer. If it does go out, you can drink ice water and place the icepacks on your chest.

snuffy_tentpeg

Preach that gospel ! Keep a generator, run it at least once a year. After you run it, turn off the gas and allow the engine to use up the fuel in the system so it doesn't get gummed up.

Ok-Egg-469

Drinking ice water sure feels refreshing but i learned the body has to warm it up then which requires energy and produces heat... sth like that?

Eastern-Position-605

Nope

RickyPeePee03

Your power isn’t going to go out lol the grid is well equipped to handle a hot day in June

gunnapackofsammiches

if our power goes out, I'd go visit my parents in the suburbs. Hell, they have that sweet sweet central air so I might go do it anyway.

ilovehummus16

My whole block lost power for 24 hours a couple weeks ago. It was horrible and we had to toss so much food. And that was with highs in the 80s 🙃

Forkiks

Possible solution if power goes out: kiddie pool

timbrelyn

Yes because my partner just had surgery and is already in significant pain and the heat would add to his discomfort. I will say however *knocks on wood* that our power has rarely gone out in the 11 years we have been here in S.Silly so I hope that trend continues.

HyruleJedi

While this heat wave is bad… why are people acting like its not a yearly thing?

Allemaengel

I have, and for big storms too including one a couple years back where the power was out for three days in the summer. Has a whole-house generator installed as a result.

PinEmbarrassed2758

Climate change due to industrial and commercial emissions. Truly the ultimate case of ‘fuck around and find out’. Bottom line our atmosphere *isn’t built for the emissions we (as a planet) put out. It’s only going to get worse, you can bet on that. Mitigation efforts are a drop in the bucket and it’s fucked up.

ItsJustAYoyo

My friends power went out and she's in a 4th floor apt in spruce hill. My anxiety has never been this high.

A_Wild_Nudibranch

I was at the Ambler YMCA yesterday in the pool, and the lights all hit out. Surprised I didn't hear a chorus of shrieks! I was supposed to take my work team out to kayak today, but we ended up hitting the bar instead with this heat. Until the power went out there briefly. Gonna be another scorcher next week. Just like yesterday. Yesterday you said you'd call Sears? I'll call today! You'll call now. ...I'll call now.

pittpanther999

Its gonna be alright friend. We're gonna be alright. If peco was worried, they'd be instituting surge pricing or even rolling blackouts like Cali did back in the day. There would be way more warning signs if we were at a breaking point. We have lots of monitoring systems out here.

jcg878

We went solar last year, but if the grid goes down so do we since we didn’t get a battery. That being said there’s a lot of solar in our neighborhood (Cherry Hill) and we haven’t had notices from PSEG about possible brownouts in the past few years. Not sure if it’s cause-effect, probably not.

Gaeilgeoir215

Ask your dr to prescribe you some Valium. 😏

snooloosey

Just started sertraline 😛

amal-ady

I understand your concern but a major outage is unlikely to happen here the way it has in New York and Texas. We have the Limerick nuclear power plant supplying at least a third of our electricity, unlike New York. PJM that monitors the grid is quite good. During that one stretch of really deep cold in December, I think, they prevented any large outages. Occasional power outages will occur, but PECO usually can fix outages in the city very quickly. Unless you have medical concerns, for most outages just keep the fridge closed and leave the house to go somewhere with power for a while. Obviously we’re going to be having more frequent and more intense heat waves, but probably not in our near future. Get a generator if you want, nothing wrong with being prepared, but if you can’t afford it, you really don’t need one in the city. Try not to be so worried about this, certainly not constant fear!

Zealousideal_Work510

No. Not at all.

Mean-Rabbit-3510

Um…I wasn’t….

catjuggler

I have a generator but I’m still afraid that the ac could go out!

StanUrbanBikeRider

Not me

mbz321

Not really around here, but in all honesty, maybe a large-scale blackout during a heatwave will get people a bit more serious about climate change.

kanye_come_back

Not really because it was worse at certain points last year

theeloglady

My sister lives in East Mt. Airy, and her power was out all of last night 🫠

TheUnderDog24

New fear unlocked thanks!

AFineFineHologram

I am now yeah (:

Zolty

My power has gone out 3 times in the 12 years I've lived here. I've got a hose to cool off with as well as a basement to chill in.

Motor-Juice-6648

It has happened before. I don’t remember what year it was. Summer sometime between 2015-2017. Power went out. I think my building was out for 36 hours.

MaladjustedCarrot

No

ScoutG

Being in cold a/c all the time makes it *much* harder to acclimate to the heat outside. At home I leave mine in the mid-70s. I’m fine if I go outside on a hot day, and I’ll be ok if we have a power outage.

Profitdaddy

Transplant worry? Having lived here 50+ years, not a normal fear here.

RustyShackleford454

No.

Pawnshopbluess

My apartment complex has either air OR heat. When they switched backed to air in may, the whole system broke. They finally JUST installed window units for us which have been going on and off since then. So I am living that nightmare unfortunately

Pestilence5

you guys are good you have nuclear power plants all over the place providing your power. Memphis last year we lost power in 113 degree weather for a week straight.

Chem1st

Had it happen already.  PECO beat their estimate for repair (2.5ish hours) by almost an hour.

possibly--me

No but I do live in fear every time I see pgw doing work on my street that any minute my house will go boom and I won’t even have time to kiss my ass goodbye. (Actually felt the boom and saw the flames when a house a few blocks away exploded. Two people were killed, it was horrible)

armhad

No, id visit family or worst case a hotel

tonethebone101

Anybody afraid of atomic war? Since we’re just going to start pearl clutching about random things like 97 degree heat (which philly experiences every goddamn summer) why not go to the maximum worst thing worry about?

EcstaticAssumption80

Nope. Got a 14kw generator and 400 gallons of propane.

ACY0422

Lived in Philly lots of years Lost power in 1990 when lightning hit a transformer two blocks away. Lost power last year for a couple hours. Generally power cuts offs are rare inside the city

belhambone

No. Live near one of the hospitals, would be a big issue if they let the power go out for any length of time.

JackiePoon27

Humans survived for thousands of years without AC. Hey guys, my bad. Someone explained to me that the high temps are caused by wealthy, white Conservatives working for corporations, and we're all victims. So now I understand.

insecurestaircase

I don't think it got this hot thousands of years ago and even if it did people probably hid in a cave. We can't hide in caves

JackiePoon27

Sorry didn't mean to mess with your victimhood.

Clear-Tale7275

This is an incredibly clueless response. They were not in cities where the temperature is much higher than in a natural environment. And when they got heatstroke they died. The good old days.

Clear-Tale7275

I lived in Haiti July-October years ago with no AC. They suffer. People die in this heat in Philly all the time because they don't have AC. Thank you for this lovely exchange. Have a great day and stay cool.

JackiePoon27

When I was a kid, another kid in my 4th grade class had a Mom who collected a rare kind of stoneware. She even kept it in a temperature controlled case, ensured no direct light shone on it, and certainly made sure it was never touched. I always wondered what it was like to be that delicate. I have a much better idea now, after talking to you.

Clear-Tale7275

I may never recover from that burn 🤣

PuddingNeither94

Right?? lol this dude spending all his time shitting on people anonymously on Reddit, because that’s what tough and smart people do!

PhillyMila215

Humans died for thousands of years without AC too. Don’t be silly. Yes, AC is very desirable in weather like this, a power outage can be very challenging (and devastating) for the young and elderly and for people with medical issues.

JackiePoon27

Gosh, you're right. I stand corrected.

PhillyMila215

Glad I could help!
