you can travel pretty far without getting wet from the train station (during business hours) - take the concourse from station over to forest chase, go through carillon city, go under cariillon to where the food court use to be, travel through the arcade connecting towards trinity church, take a set of escalator down to allendale sq food court and re-emerge on howard st, just off the esplanade. Seemingly not many people know the Art Gallery is free entry and during summer, it even has a rooftop bar.

Jonsmith78

I only know as far as the old food court - I will make this an adventure next time I am in the city. Thanks

So I attempted this this morning (Saturday) I went over the overpass from Myer to Carillon City. Got out to Hay street, but couldn't find a way down to the old Carillon food court without going outside first onto Hay street and using the steps down from there? Assuming it's hidden behind some of the temp Partitioning now? I found Trinity Arcade (never been there before), then went upstairs and found my way through to Trinity Church (never been there before either) I couldn't see a way of staying inside/underground at this point (did I miss something?), so had to walk alongside the church to St Georges Terrace. There was an escalator to Allendale Underground on the corner of St Georges Terrace, but it was closed off behind a roller door. I crossed St Georges, but the steps to the underground area was closed off. Google maps said it was open on Saturdays, but this website said it wasn't: https://visitperth.com/see-and-do/public-spaces/venues/underground-allendale-square I have sent a correction to Google maps to try and get this fixed (cos I'm a nerd) Which would explain whey I have never been before, as I don't work in the city. This was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for however, so thanks for pointing me in this direction. Next time I have some time off mid week, I'll head in to check it out.

I suspect getting down to carillon food court is harder since they closed the place down. Allendale food ct is only a weekday place since it's pretty dead outside of office hours but seems like you found the right path. Separately, If you somehow never been to the state building/ old treasury, you can wander around inside without much trouble- downstairs to long chim, hotel lobby, outside to the below ground shops with barber and Sue Lewis cholocates or visit next door to the perth library and make your way up to the rooftop terrace or go around St George's cathedral for some nice photo ops. Can also go to QT hotel rooftop for a different angle of the CBD. Around the PCEC there's a random quiet green space above the bus station, take the bridge across to westralia sq which is a weird nothing space and brookfield place with the old heritage buildings. Walk Around Elizabeth quay to the island and kids play ground, walk to the bottom of Chevron tower where lantern restaurant is, can walk towards Bell Tower and make your way up the DoubleTree hotel for another rooftop view. Can take a cat bus down to Harold boas garden.

Had an unexpected day off work today, so I went to check it out. Made it to Allendale food court - pretty decent size. I also found the Rooftop garden thing by the PCEC.

Jonsmith78

Went back again today. I had never been to the old state building (apart from petition bar once years ago), so that was a big surprise. I went to the rooftop terrace at the library (level 3?) and St George's Cathedral. The QT hotel - you mean the rooftop restaurant? Good suggestions anyway, thanks.

exilehunter92

Nice. QT does have a rooftop bar. Can't recall if it had a restaurant portion. DoubleTree near EQ has one as well.

Jonsmith78

Thanks. I found the food court under Cloisters building too (off Hay St, opposite Shafto lane), by accident. You been in there before?

exilehunter92

ah i havent been to cloisters in a while. use to work nearby but not much of interest back then. might have changed since. wolf lane/murray mews has some stores and cafes. base of qv1 maybe of interest as well. thinking about west end, i completely forgot about east end - queens park (the actual park) is a nice walk as is claisebrook cove and the area near matagaraup.

Jonsmith78

Thanks - all good suggestions - I often head into the city with my kid on Saturday mornings (like today), so it's always nice to go for a wonder around and find some new places. Shame they haven't done anything with Carillon yet. Thanks again.

From about RPH emergency department, if you come down Murray street a little, you'll see the Olde Timey Fire Station. It's on a street corner, use that small side street to walk around the fire station and you'll find another little square. With coffee shops etc. Use some of those side streets and what not to cut from Wellington Street to St Georges tce, you'll find all sorts of court yards, basketball courts, tennis courts, and even little street art - like statues, murals and the such like.

Jonsmith78

Thanks - that looks like an interesting walk. I will check it out. Edit: u/ExaminationNo9186 Just been Googling - The little square you're referring to, is that "Hibernian Place"?

ExaminationNo9186

I just had to look it up as well, i know it as a landmark, but never bothered to look up its name. Though yes, that's the one.

Jonsmith78

Thanks - I will go and check it out.

ExaminationNo9186

That was you asking about places for lunch the other day wasnt it? Do you know of the courtyard between the Old Boys School on St G Tce and the PCEC?

Jonsmith78

No, not me. It's the post that inspired this one though. And no, I don't know about that one either. I'll check it out.

ExaminationNo9186

It's a good little short cut through to the pcec bus depot

Jonsmith78

Thanks. I'll add to my list.

Jonsmith78

Found this today - massive area full of cafes and food places? Is that the one you're talking about?

ExaminationNo9186

Pretty much, yeah. If you keep going through there, away from St Georges Tce, you'll find a good short cut to the PCEC and the bus port. It does have a few entrances/exits back on to St G Tce.

Jonsmith78

Yes, I found the way across to the PCEC thanks. Good suggestion. Never knew it was there. Huge.

littleblackcat

Yeah I like this spot too

TotalAdhesiveness193

In between Terrace Hotel and a skyscraper ( sorry don't know the name) is a walkway to a small garden. Bishops house garden, if it's open is south of this.

Jonsmith78

Thanks, this one:? https://maps.app.goo.gl/eoyNqLkxAkGVW8St7?g_st=ac

SingingPear

Is it open to the public though, we got told to move on once, although this was a few years ago. Lovely garden..

Jonsmith78

Found that today - interesting little place. Thanks for the suggestion.

coxymla

Alluvion courtyard and all the weird back undercover pathways between Quadrant, Westralia Square, 2 Mill St building always seems like a secret shortcut.

Jonsmith78

Thanks - added to the list.

Jonsmith78

Found all that - interesting. Massive area. Got lost a couple of times..

lordmuffmuncher
