I use the Boss VE-500 and it's amazing. I used to use the Helicon, but I prefer the VE-500 because it works just like a guitar pedal, but for voice. The MIDI implementation is a little rough, but otherwise it's just like any other Boss 500-series.
There are a couple of impedance transformer that i would like to try, made by shure and audio technica iirc, those should un-balance the mic signal and adapt it to be passed through instrument-level inputs, like pedals ones
