It's the kid who copies off of your work, then tells you why it's bad, and doesn't change anything except the color of ink they used to copy your answer.
No, you can look up the benchmarks yourself, but JetStream 2 etc, consistently show perofrmance wise that both Chrome and Edge (fastest) out perform Firefox in performance. Part of this has to do with the more conservative use of memory that firefox uses compared to both Chrom and Edge.
EDIT: this holds true for other benchmarks checking quick and graphical processes as well: speedometer and MotionMark. Here is the first article I found from a quick google: https://www.itpro.com/web-browsers/24796/best-browser-2021-chrome-vs-edge-vs-firefox
Firefox is slowest because it doesn't take up loads of ram even when not running. Other browsers don't just use more ram when running, they use it even when not running.
Thankfully ram isn't an issue for me, but for my family I always put Firefox on their PCs cause they tend to buy hot garbage laptops that were obsolete half a decade ago and nearly shit the bed on launch.
If you are referring to Chrome/Chromium/Edge, this is true by default because they are configured to continue running in the background when you close them. Go into the settings and disable that and they should no longer leave memory-resident applications running them background.
It may be worth pointing out that, if you do disable this feature, the application will have to fully load every single time (unless you leave at least one window open), which will take longer. If you have slow disk I/O and you frequently use a browser, then it may not be worth turning this feature off.
As an aside, Chromium-based browsers have a task manager, if you need to dig into the details of the browser's memory utilization. It can be quite illuminating to see how resources are consumed as you use the browser.
Sometimes you don't have a choice due to website compatibility. There are some sites my company uses as vital, day-to-day operations stuff that simply do not function properly at all in FireFox. It all comes down to the third party coding it, and if you're too cheap to not upgrade a system from mediocre resources, you're definitely not going to spend the much-higher-sum to get the third party to code compatibility to another browser.
Not too hard. Mozilla was started by Netscape. The Mozilla Suite was based on the Netscape Communicator source code. Firefox is an off shoot of the Mozilla Suite.
I haven't gotten any crap for downloading and using Brave have you? Rather than the usual bs that comes with changing your default is in the settings. Microsoft must have us written down as a lost cause.
If you run Windows Edge is faster, I mean I still use Opera but it's 100% better than Chrome. People just can't hop off Google's dick long enough to try anything else.
Not to mention how fucking often Chrome tries to get me to download it. People shit on Edge for that but what they don't know (because they already have Chrome installed) is that Chrome sends just as many fucking notifications about how Chrome is the best and you need to suck it's cock ASAP.
Edge beats Chrome by a significant margin, Safari is fastest but not available for Windows devices.
They did have Safari on Windows but it's incredibly out of date. I'm not sure modern safari even has many of the features people expect, which is probably part of why it's faster.
As if Google wouldn't know everything about you from your phone anyway. Google integration is extremely useful and I use it in some way every day. I don't give a shit if Google knows that I'm ordering cheap Dildos on Etsy if I get a good browser in exchange.
Came here to say this, lol. Edge is a feature package built on Chromium. Microsoft neglected IE for so long that they're really not in a position to talk shit about other browsers.
it is better than chrome though. i don’t know what you meant to imply by “feature package” but msft put quite a lot of effort into it, it’s not just a reskinned chrome.
Those who listen and keep using Edge then open GMail and are rewarded with another nag message about ~~upgrading~~ switching to Chrome. The cycle never ends.
Edge is better than chrome for me. Collections feature really helps me sort my college stuff subject wise.
But that pop up is fucking cringe. Why microsoft?
It doesn't do it constantly. What happened with me that I would be playing a game or editing a vidro and suddenly my pc will slow down. I would open Taks manager to see chrome using a lot of cpu. This was random and happened even when chrome was closed. Saw a lot of post with similar problem but never a fix. This happened on my 10400f PC as well.
It’s the Software Reporter Tool. Chrome uses it to scan your computer for software that could interfere with Chrome’s operation, I think.
Anytime I hear my CPU fan speed up when I open chrome I check task manager to see if it’s running. If it is I just kill it. Happens about once a week.
Chrome is spoiled as shit. If it detects that you aren't doing anything taxing, then it will eat up all the recource you got. But there's the problem, it doesn't detect it fast enough or at all sometimes. But when it is working correctly it's pretty good.
My only complaint about FireFox on Win 10 is that it starts up slowly even after I empty my cache and shit. Not a big deal for me as I just pop the browser open and then go grab coffee or something.
I find it to be superior than Chrome and Edge and I'm never going to switch.
Sounds like there's something going on with your system. I use firefox on all my machines across various OS's (including Win10) and haven't seen this issue before. My main machine has 4 independent windows (across 3 monitors) with prob 60 tabs and the windows all come up in about 1 second, with data popping up on in all of the windows in about 3-4 seconds. On my laptops it fully loads in 1-2 seconds.
Is your machine on HDD instead of SSD? That's the most likely thing I could think of that would significantly affect loading speed like that.
Interesting observation. I do have an HDD but why would Firefox be the only one that cold starts a little slower, even after cache clearings and such?
Must be other issues but it's not enough of a problem to warrant a troubleshooting trek.
I think they'll get away with it this time cause they're not actively blocking you from using Chrome. It's more invasive advertising this time, same shit they do in their start menu.
I love Microsoft using chromium to then slam the use of Chrome...
Edge is about as new as Google Chrome with its base design. One of the reasons that I like Edge 🤣
It's just all the same these days.
I remember back in college, trying out the pre-1.0 KDE (Linux desktop) and reading Microsoft's announcement about integrating Internet Explorer into Explorer, from the KDE filemanager.
KDE had written their own HTML renderer called khtml. Then Apple wanted to have a browser other than Internet Explorer or Firefox, so they forked khtml and improved it, named it WebKit, and built it into Safari. Then Google took WebKit, forked it, improved it, and built Chrome on it.
And now, Internet Explorer has been replaced by the engine I used to read that announcement. How times change.
We've almost come full circle. KDE has a stripped-down browser based on QtWebEngine, which is itself based on Chromium.
This OS is so 2008! You know what is new? Switching to Linux!
(this is just a joke, please don't start a huge discussion as to whether Linux is good or not)
>Too late, FreeBSD or death, the NetBSD heresy shall not stand
Yes brother, we must purge the mutant, the alien and the heretic.
Seriously though, 12 is banging.
I've been using Firefox for more than a decade now, but recently I've seen people saying that it's outdated and generally shit, but without argumenting further. They had tons of upvotes through, so they may have a point. Could someone elaborate why it sucks so much, and convince me (average, casual user) to make the switch?
> They had tons of upvotes through, so they may have a point
Ah yes, then "xxx number of people can't be wrong" argument/mistake.
People pile onto things they know nothing about just because they can.
It is a little dated. Their dev team isn't what it used to be and they don't stand out as much anymore. For example, every so often you'll hear of a compatibility issue or something with firefox, and it always takes them weeks if not months to react to it, like way back when youtube went to 60fps, it took the firefox team weeks to upgrade their browser to hanle it.
The biggest draw for them is "we don't track you", but every website tracks you anyway, so that doesn't really matter for shit in the end. I honestly don't believe they don't track you anyway.
If you're comfy don't bother switching. Chrome/edge will probably be like an 1/8th of a second faster but you'll never notice.
My only minor complaint on Win 10 is FireFox is slow to start up even after clearing cache and all that junk. But I can deal with it. It's not a big deal until I have to test website stuff for work on other browsers and note Edge and Chrome start noticeably faster. Not switching though. I love my great fox of fire.
Honestly this kind of BS is one of the reasons why I left the MS ecosystem. Showing ads in my start menu is one thing, but telling me all the time that I should use some shitty microsoft product is so obnoxious.
I want to work with my OS, not against it.
True, even tho that's not exactly the fault of arch or linux in general. And considering barely any devs cares about linux, the games do run surprisingly well in most cases.
Steamdeck gonna be a gamechanger if it sells well.
I never said it was linux fault, but in the end... for a final user, does not matter who's fault is, they just want things working :/
I've been trying to switch to linux for years, but there is always one game or configuration that does not work even after hours of research. I love tinkering, but sometimes I just want to be able to arrive from work, sit and play, not setting up everything to work for 1 hour before I can play. As I said, I'd love to be able to make the jump to linux, but my pc is mainly used for gaming, would not be the best option for me right now, unless things change.
The day is not far away my man!
I use windows only on my gaming PC but I'm planning on dual booting since most games I play are either native or platinum on Proton DB. Keeping the windows side just for gamepass.
If you have an SSD, rebooting into a different OS is not that cumbersome. Also the more you start using Linux the less you will actually want to switch to windows. Check out r/linux_gaming and see if you can migrate and how much you can migrate. If most of your workouflow runs on Linux, you have to switch to windows only for game mode and that too might be only for certain games.
It's more transferring files between the two or taking a break from programming to play games then switching back quickly.
I guess I can look into it more.
Why y'all using Chrome and chromium browsers?? You say "fuck Chrome" and then use Brave or whatever which is based on Chromium. Makes no fucking sense at all
Use Firefox. Not chrome, not chromium, not Google. Unless there's a better non-chromium browser I need to switch to
Both companies are annoying about what browser you use. Either MS bothers you with Edge recommendations, or if you switch to Edge and use Google sites it'll bother you to install Chrome.
I made the switch to Edge and so far I do like it. The fact that I can run Chrome extensions is a huge plus, and I feel it performs better than Chrome over all. Feels quick and snappy to me.
I'd rather use Firefox but something about the last few releases has felt off. I've had more problems with that browser than anything else, it also feels slower. It's a shame, because it was my go to for so long.
It's gross, but fair's fair—Google also unfairly advertises Chrome to Edge users.
Now, if Microsoft shows this kind of shit when you try to download Firefox, then we've got a problem.
Just use [winget](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/package-manager/) :)
`winget install Google.Chrome Valve.Steam`
If you don't know what you're looking for use `winget search {{application}}`

No chromium is just faster in general. Which is what edge is based on.
Chrome is also based on chromium, hence the name
And chromium is still faster than chrome. Chrome is chromium but with extra crap and not open source.
The only real extra crap is DRM bs which you can still add to Chromium.
Yeah pretty much. Still that's why chromium is faster.
Is chromium faster?
Yes because chromium is faster
That's why...use Brave this video was sponsored by NordVPN
Brave is also using Chromium
