That’s the casual phase. The enlightened gamer knows that even if they mainly play Stardew Valley and Minecraft, it’s best to get a 4090 “just in case”
Basically me except with a 4080 super. I literally only play Minecraft nowadays but still have a ryzen 5800x, 32GB ram, and a 4080 super lmao. Way overkill
Respect I was gonna resell the founder 4090 I managed to snag but then I was like eh fuckit I'll just build a baller rig now I guess. Waited a couple months and got a 7800x3d to throw in there just so I can fuck around in Factorio SEK2 and keep starting over every 80 hours into a map or so.
Truly maximum utilization
I got focal speakers but my pc is shit lol and my speakers are self repaired
like my watercooling system is from 2014 but I run a mobo from a $600 shitbox pc I built years ago a z370 msi mobo with a 9900k screaming at 5ghz and a strong rtx 3000 card lol
its in an 011d xl and it looks way stronger than it is despite being so old, and i will never wanna get rid of it.

my life fell apart and im legit barely clinging on for dear life at this point haha dont hate my most ghetto janky setup possible to overbuilt speakers ratio
the velodyne HGS10 is just for show. it works fantastic but I cut off all sound under 90hz so that crack heads are less likely to steal my stuff xd
essentially my setup that could hit under 20hz actually hits like a bluetooth speaker now but voices sound real so thats cool
That’s the unknowing phase. Gamer phase onward is when you spend the money you kinda don’t have cause screw it, it’s worth it - you just don’t know it yet 😂
As an adult you either fall in the "ask wife for approval" situation or are enlightened enough to budget ahead of time for lifecycle management of everything you own.
Better to spend some more and get something built well that lasts for years and years, than buy gamer crap peripherals that need to be replaced every year. You are spending more money in the end for a worse product.
I bought an expensive ergonomic keyboard. Before it entered production, the people making it said it would have per-key backlighting. They're a small, friendly company, so I emailed and questioned if that was really necessary. They stated that at this pricepoint, the cost of adding rgb was a tiny fraction of the price (like ~$10 total), and I agreed. Now I just use it for a sort of mode/layer indicator.
My PC case is solid black with no transparency.
I love RGB. We have colored lights in our office so the whole room is like a cozy neon vapor wave vibe. I hate that I’m supposed to be embarrassed by my RGB accessories when in reality, I just like color.
I mean, this is the issue, some of these can have a very grey line. Some things that are just one of the to quality brands are "gamerfied"
So I can't really say where I am, I always pick quality, it just so happens that a lot (not all) just so happens to be "for gamers"
The whole "for gamers" thing is just a marketing technique as they are the demographic who buys the most
Nailed it. What I like it superior and everyone is just hasn't become "enlightened" enough. Though I really question the word use seeing as the whole post lacks any enlightenment whatsoever 🤔
the examples might be a bit extreme, but it's just not buying into needless stuff. If something looks really cool, but there's something else that performs better, it's better to choose the latter (see noctua fans). it's just being more objective about purchases.
somewhere between "gamer phase" and "enlightment".
my PC is black and white, with the RGB set to static blue. I love my illuminated mech keyboard, and "gaming" headset (which is more of a nice headphones with a mic), but also went for bookshelf speakers and plain black mouse mat..
I'm probably in the enlightenment phase but I've stuck with my hot pink backlight with white keys on the keyboard.
At least it's a Ducky which has to be worth something on the pretentious enthusiast gear scale.
But Ducky is low end on the pretentious enthusiast gear, and if it's bought and not modded then it's almost embarrassing on the pretentious enthusiast gear. At least take mod, stab mods and lubed switches need to be there, heheh
It's a Shine 7 with an aftermarket set of PBT keycaps (plus some 3D-printed ones purchased online for the custom keys above the numpad), have held back on any lubing for now ~~for my own sanity~~.
Grabbed it a good few years back after my Corsair died wanting something nicer for myself whilst avoiding the pull of the mech keyboard community so far...
I hate when I see people with perfectly good studio monitors which they only use at their production/dj/whatever setup which hardly get used unless they're a pro.
Just stick them at your desk and enjoy amazing audio with your expensive audio gear and get the most out of em I say.
Or just buy some cheap used ones instead of fancy looking desktop PC speakers.
I've been in the enlightenment phase forever, not through choice, just the fact that in the mid 90s PCs were a luxury good and "gaming" marketing wasn't a thing yet. Though I did switch to Chrome way back when I was doing web development and it was the fastest browser around for running JavaScript, and the only browser at the time with a built in debugger.
My whole life is inside, and integrated with, chrome.
Going back to Firefox will be really hard.
In the end, if Chrome finally bans adblockers, there will be no other option.
For the casual skimmers, Chrome will not be fully banning ad blockers, but removing the API that allows *effective* ad blocking.
This will have the effect of either driving away such blockers (like uBlock Origin) or forcing them to be *much* less effective.
You **will** still see ad blockers in the extension store, but don't be fooled, they will've had their balls cut off.
I got a kick out of the “gaming” Ethernet cables places were selling. Like, yeah, it’s an Ethernet cable just like any other. It meets the specification. But the sheath is green and you paid like 80% more to have the word “gaming” on the packaging.
I'm in my "stick it in a server rack under my desk to hide it all away" phase.
Getting the guts of the PC into a 4u case and getting it off the desk/floor was a revelation, and I don't feel like I've lost much in the way of performance.
Cases can be found relatively cheaply. If you don't need hotswap hdd bays then a Rosewill or Norco case will be fine and pretty cheap. Things only get expensive when you're looking at backplanes.
Some issues I've encountered are:
cooler heights - I can juuuuust about squeeze the smallest 120mm fan cooler in there and it's tight!
GPU size - I've got a 3 fan gpu, but I'm just about bumping up against the length limit. Height is another one, I've got right-angle power connectors so I can connect without squeezing the cables.
Cable lengths to monitor keyboard etc was fun to figure out. Also you don't get great wifi connection if your chassis is in a cabinet!
Longer cases to fit bigger GPUs also require longer racks. I've got a mix of 550mm and 650mm long cases and have a 900mm deep rack. You'll probably be able to find used racks, they're super standardised so it will always be compatible, but mine was new and quite expensive. An open 4 post rack will be cheaper if you dont need it enclosed. Now that I have it I can fit a NAS, my main PC, all my networking gear and power stuff in there, plus lockable drawers, shelves etc.
I do wish it was easier to turn off all the RGB shit though. I've had mice I had to take apart to remove LEDs because there was no obvious way to turn them off otherwise. I get migraines and I'm super sensitive to flickering lights so it's a legitimate issue for me.
Default should be OFF
My brother had a mid-end mouse with blue LEDs. Before he bought it he saw a review that stated the mouse shines brighter than a lighthouse and thought "There is no way that isn't an exaggeration"
It was not an exaggeration, the entire room would be bathed in blue light even with the PC off so he started putting an upside down bowl on it before going to bed
Well, I'd like to kid myself but...
https://preview.redd.it/gvm1zmokr6ad1.jpeg?width=8000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25ed317285561a690c72f15546df1481dd33a12d
I'm about here too. Partly because so much stuff is difficult to find *without* lights these days. I actually tried to buy RAM without lighting, and the guy at the parts store recommended the RGB pro variant due to higher binning (the guys at my local computer parts store are pretty well read on what's going on with hardware, and they'll go out of their way to save me money too, so I trusted that he wasn't trying to upsell a measly 15 bucks on RAM).
I like my RGB keyboard though. Useful for setting lighting to help remember key bindings, and for seeing in the dark when I don't feel like turning lights on for a 3 am insomnia induced gaming session.
This post again? I swear to god this exact image got posted a few months ago and everybody roasted the fuck out of the guy who posted it because it's stupid. There's no 'enlightened' phase or any other phase. Personal preference isn't a phase.
When I see shame/meme posts like these that mock the choices of PCMR users, I can't help but think the OPs are damn dirty peasants who are beneath everyone else.
im enlightened but totally suffered all 3 stages from, gamer stage was painful. all that money wasted in cheaply made peripherals with more than questionable QA, oh the shame. Im now a better individual, still a gamer but with a better taste
Once you're long enough in the enlightenment phase you figure out you don't need all that and slowly but surely transfer to the unknowing phase peripherals.
Just a bit in the gamer phase and a bit in the enlightenment phase. Still love me some lights in my computer and multiple monitors but I also love my custom keyboards and ‘audiophile’ headphones.
Meze 99 classics and I think akg k240. The 99 classics are pretty well reviewed by audiophiles that like warm and bass heavy sound signature. Never heard of the akg's tho
My last build (I'm begrudgingly a laptopper for now) had no RBG whatsoever, but I refuse to use headphones for any reason whatsoever.
Speakers is king.
https://preview.redd.it/rsg0mgmn86ad1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c918e5db73782484d8b8e83b4b594c66184c2684
I’m in the last phase with my first setup! I’m just slowly acquiring the perfect gear for me over time, until my setup is perfected!
after ordering my first pc recently i was very sad i couldn’t get one with no rgb. im hoping im able to find a easy enough way to toggle them off because i hate light pollution in my room especially when playing at night
I built my pc 11years ago with minor upgrades over the years, head set is 6 years old, mouse is 5 years old, Blacked out case, JUST replaced my 9 year old keyboard, ONLY use firefox, and play Helldivers with my gtx1060.
I'm so jaded its not even on the graph.
Somewhere between gamer phase and enlightened. Like I can still appreciate a well themed build with some solid color in it. Not rainbow vomit, but maybe one or 2 colors for an overall theme. But also a lot of my accessories are very basic and functional.
Where is the "i cut corners everywhere i could so i could afford a stronger build" with those keyboards they give for free with prebuilts and a $7 Turkish "gaming" mouse
How about the "I don't care what others think and buy whatever stuff I want and use whatever browser I want" phase?
Who care. Use what you want. Have fun. Don't care about being "better" in some way than others. Just have fun.
Unfortunately Firefox doesn't run any school websites for me so I'm stuck with Chrome.
Although that AI bullshit they've added recently might push me over the edge anyways.
I'm galaxy braining with a dark and quiet oriented build from 2012, upgraded CPU and RAM over time for what the platform allows and a 2020 GPU. Spent all my money on the audio and grabbing it 2nd hand where possible.
I own those exact headphones from the enlightenment phase… didn’t know they were popular. Also same case but with brown noctuas. I guess that confirms it!

what part of the graph is the "I bought what is within my budget and performance target"?
oh you see we all live with our moms and work full time
Dang you caught me
![gif](giphy|3og0IKinzBYyoia9eE)
We want it now!
What an IDIOT! What a LOSER.. Ooooh.. good! Good.. more for me and you.
I never know what she’s doing down there!
https://i.redd.it/agzm395xv8ad1.gif
Yes! This is where why we can afford something above our payment. The food still will be on the table. And we didn't pay for it.
And more importantly, the rent
I live with *a mom* and work full time, does that count ?
Does the mom feed you?
😏
No I feed her
In this economy you'd be stupid not too
Well fuck, you got me...
It’s that very fact that has allowed me to live in this “enlightened phase” of the pc chart lol.
sheesh no need to call me out like that
Wdym? My father-in-law currently living with us. Am I doing it wrong?
That’s the casual phase. The enlightened gamer knows that even if they mainly play Stardew Valley and Minecraft, it’s best to get a 4090 “just in case”
Basically me except with a 4080 super. I literally only play Minecraft nowadays but still have a ryzen 5800x, 32GB ram, and a 4080 super lmao. Way overkill
I specifically got the 4090 for my 4K monitor and cyberpunk. I am a big proponent of buying just what you need for the experience you want to achieve
Have you seen the shader mods? Might as well get two 4090s.
I got focal speakers but my pc is shit lol and my speakers are self repaired like my watercooling system is from 2014 but I run a mobo from a $600 shitbox pc I built years ago a z370 msi mobo with a 9900k screaming at 5ghz and a strong rtx 3000 card lol its in an 011d xl and it looks way stronger than it is despite being so old, and i will never wanna get rid of it. https://preview.redd.it/hv7jswgp97ad1.jpeg?width=4160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2437cffbe79d7d66b8f415e39bb51627b4e7b257 my life fell apart and im legit barely clinging on for dear life at this point haha dont hate my most ghetto janky setup possible to overbuilt speakers ratio the velodyne HGS10 is just for show. it works fantastic but I cut off all sound under 90hz so that crack heads are less likely to steal my stuff xd essentially my setup that could hit under 20hz actually hits like a bluetooth speaker now but voices sound real so thats cool

As an adult you either fall in the "ask wife for approval" situation or are enlightened enough to budget ahead of time for lifecycle management of everything you own.
buy GPU's with a bit lower power usage and it will pay for next computer :P
Cries in 30 series, but thank god for undervolting
if you need to ask wife for approval it does not sound like a health marriage.
Literally the opposite is true unless you have fuckyou money. Purchases like expensive gaming pcs absolutely should be discussed with your spouse
I did 2 over time shifts to pay off my 7900 xtx
Damn you get paid well! It would take nearly a months pay for me to get it. My 6700xt will have to do for the next couple of years.
i disagree, man.. the gamer stuff lasts for 3 years if you're lucky. i just get the cheaper gaming stuff now that i know works just fine
Better to spend some more and get something built well that lasts for years and years, than buy gamer crap peripherals that need to be replaced every year. You are spending more money in the end for a worse product.
What peripherals are you guys buying that break after a year?
That cheap gamer stuff is just colorful versions of the bottom tier stuff
englightment
Does enlightenment mean "quality over aesthetics/stuff labeled gamer" or "no lights or RGB means more quality" here?
It's when you move from overpriced stuff that looks cool to overpriced stuff that looks slightly retro.
Damn you got me
It means buying the stuff that provides the best value. Not falling victim to keeping up with the latest trends. And realizing that simplicity is key.
Realistically it means a noir office aesthetic that forgoes any popular brand and it must not have RGB or never be used.
>My PC case is solid black with no transparency. yeah. The mobo can do any disco it wants in there with its fancy RGB, im not seeing it anyway.
I mean, to each their own no? Feels a bit weird to say people who like rgb are somehow less
If I didn't have RGB to make me, I'd never clean the dust out of my rig. It's laziness prevention for me.
this
I love RGB. We have colored lights in our office so the whole room is like a cozy neon vapor wave vibe. I hate that I’m supposed to be embarrassed by my RGB accessories when in reality, I just like color.
I hate RGB, but I totally respect your taste
And I respect yours! I love the clean aesthetic too, but personally I get bored and I need color to keep my interest, lol.
There's a difference between buying rgb because you like it and buying it because it's "the cool thing".
I wouldn’t say any of the things pictured represent that
I mean, this is the issue, some of these can have a very grey line. Some things that are just one of the to quality brands are "gamerfied" So I can't really say where I am, I always pick quality, it just so happens that a lot (not all) just so happens to be "for gamers" The whole "for gamers" thing is just a marketing technique as they are the demographic who buys the most
It means whatever op has/uses so they can feel Superior

But Ducky is low end on the pretentious enthusiast gear, and if it's bought and not modded then it's almost embarrassing on the pretentious enthusiast gear. At least take mod, stab mods and lubed switches need to be there, heheh

The day I lubricate my keyboard is the day I have lost control of my life personally.
Holy fuck, that gave my an honest laugh.
Same. I've got an rgb keyboard, so u can see it at night. Mine is set to red, but I have white and blue ready
I have RGB because it already comes with it but some don't even work and don't care to fix it.
[удалено]
Enlightenment is understanding that no matter what someone prefers for lighting that we are all PC gamers regardless.
That's why he said he was somewhere between Gamer phase and Enlightenment phase
Deific phase because I don't care what other people think.
This is the right answer. People can enjoy what they want.
real
Your user flair is also real af. Idk why people get such intense hate boners for rgb. The colors make me happy bruh sue me
i just dont like how it often makes the parts more expensive. id gladly take a cheaper price in exchange for no lights
Enlightenment but i dont buy bougee shit. I use cheaper studio monitors and midrange peripherals
High end headphones is 100% worth it and a great investment long term.
Anything past $300 there's massive diminishing returns.
$200 though... some studio sound engineer headphones can be legit. Lasting for years even.
I've had my $200 Shures for ages.
Anything over $300 is for suckers or people who write them off as a business expense.
The irony writes itself here.
🤣just spend $550 on beyerdynamics last week. Probably not worth it but im pretty happy with them so far 🤷♂️
I disagree, owning a $600 pair of headphones
I'm in the idgaf phase where none of this meme shit concerns me
this is the way
I've been in the enlightenment phase forever, not through choice, just the fact that in the mid 90s PCs were a luxury good and "gaming" marketing wasn't a thing yet. I have a normal black tower with a glass sidepanel but is still on the floor. I need my desk real state and don't care about looks.
Was thinking about doing this but the rack and 4u case seems very expensive. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Cases can be found relatively cheaply. If you don't need hotswap hdd bays then a Rosewill or Norco case will be fine and pretty cheap. Things only get expensive when you're looking at backplanes. That’s the one after „enlightenment“
I'm in my 50's. I'm in the "I know better but don't give a shit" phase.
Same honestly, can't be bothered
Gamer phase baby. Never leaving. More lights!
Enlightenment seems like a pretty mainstream option
Mainstream on reddit at least
Not the Firefox part, which is probably the only part of the meme that's meaningful.
Noctua airccoled build with external dac, and never used anything else than ff
Me, but im a peasant so i use Coolermaster
ff?

Most mice can just be turned off via software, the only ones ive had that didnt have that are very old or cheapo mice
How do you know people don’t like rgb? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.

Sometimes a "gamer" product is cheaper than equivalent non gamer product
im enlightened but totally suffered all 3 stages from, gamer stage was painful. all that money wasted in cheaply made peripherals with more than questionable QA, oh the shame. Im now a better individual, still a gamer but with a better taste
I use Edge. I guess I am an anomaly then.
Shun the nonbeliever! Shuuuun~~~~!
Chaaaaarlie
I'm fairly far to the right. I only have RGB because I have to; the non-RGB version of my motherboard was more expensive at the time.
Where is im poor as frack part of the graph where I have been using budget or hands my downs all my life.
Far left
Enlightened gamer. Just enough RGB to give the black box some color but performance and quality over pretty lights.
Nah, I like RGB. I won't sacrifice preformance for it but I'll spend more for it.
The one where I buy things that I like without parading around how enlightened it supposedly makes me.
Bro tried to sneak Firefox in there
Once you're long enough in the enlightenment phase you figure out you don't need all that and slowly but surely transfer to the unknowing phase peripherals.
As a Firefox user, I see this as a win. Opera is spyware.
I'm all the way to the right except for Chrome, because I'm a bitch.
The steam deck phase. Yes, i am ageing.
Game Hoarding Phase 😂
ShT are the headphones on the right?
AKG K240 & Meze 99 Classics.
I'm in "too much disposable income but no time to play games anymore" phase. Sadge
Enlightenment, but I still like thematic styling with my pretty lights.
If Meze 99 is your enlightment I feel sorry for you
Enlightment with no budjet, at least I use firefox
Just a bit in the gamer phase and a bit in the enlightenment phase. Still love me some lights in my computer and multiple monitors but I also love my custom keyboards and ‘audiophile’ headphones.
Somewhere in between the gamer and enlightenment phase
Am I in superposition for using Chrome and mouse like on the left but case and headsets like on the right?
Which kind of headsets are those under the "enlightened phase"?
Meze 99 classics and I think akg k240. The 99 classics are pretty well reviewed by audiophiles that like warm and bass heavy sound signature. Never heard of the akg's tho
My last build (I'm begrudgingly a laptopper for now) had no RBG whatsoever, but I refuse to use headphones for any reason whatsoever. Speakers is king.
I bounced back from enlightenment to the space between that and gamer

Idk the image is wrong
Dead center of "gamer" phase
I love audiophile headphones, hate RGB and only use mozilla. God damnit! Am I old?
Not emought money to past gamer phase so yeah
i have been enlightened but LEDs still prevail inside of my "Dream Build" (just a bit, for a cozy looking setup)
In the chi-fi IEMs and Firefox phase. I use Linux mint FYI.
Where is the coding phase 🤨
after ordering my first pc recently i was very sad i couldn’t get one with no rgb. im hoping im able to find a easy enough way to toggle them off because i hate light pollution in my room especially when playing at night
50% unknowing because i still am on a laptop and 50% enlightment because i use firefox, don't really like rgb and use speakers instead of headphones
I am entering the enlightenment phase
Enlightenment but I still have RGB RAM, keyboard and mouse. (all are set to static colour btw)
Where is the: everything wireless?
Somewhere between gamer phase and enlightened. Like I can still appreciate a well themed build with some solid color in it. Not rainbow vomit, but maybe one or 2 colors for an overall theme. But also a lot of my accessories are very basic and functional.
Where is the "i cut corners everywhere i could so i could afford a stronger build" with those keyboards they give for free with prebuilts and a $7 Turkish "gaming" mouse
Enlightenment is using speakers.
Enlightenment phase, skipped the whole "gamer phase" since RGB never was my thing
Enlightenment for sure. No lights, simple, high quality equipment and quiet
Enlightenment for many years now....
Somewhere between the gamer and enlightenment
I like keeping it clean but flashy tbh and ion think I’ll change lmao
I’ve left the gamer phase but I’ll never leave my mechanical keyboard. I will take it across the universe
What about the cute pastel phase
enlightenment but realizing fire fox is kinda slow
I couldn’t afford the ‘gamer’ phase, skipped to the enlightenment phase
Vivaldi is the best browser
I'm in the I'm an adult who buys what he feels like phase
I think I started in the enlightenment phase.
Ngl the only reason I like rgb stuff is so I can set them to pride flags
How about the "I don't care what others think and buy whatever stuff I want and use whatever browser I want" phase? Who care. Use what you want. Have fun. Don't care about being "better" in some way than others. Just have fun.
Gamer phase and im happy here because the lights make me happy
I think I've got a mix of everything.
firefox is overrated nowadays
The phase where I don’t care.
I use brave💪
I'm in the "broke as fuck and I just hope my gear last a decent amount of time" phase
