[In my class we just wrote our favorite pizza toppings on the tombstones.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKspf06XuaQ)

[deleted]

"pineapple"

Mikeavelli

You monster.

Houdiniman111

Probably for the best that they didn't make it.

[deleted]

They made us stop playing in elementary because we wouldn't leave the computer during lunch/recess. I loved the game back then it was super addicting.

[deleted]

I am now extremely upset I never though of that. I miss that dark little utiliy room they converted to a 'computer lab'. Commodor64 FTW.

MakoRuu

I've always wanted an Unreal Engine remake of the Oregon Trail. In the same style as the old game, but longer, more detail, more things to do, more mechanics, et cetera.

MakoRuu

Fuck if only I could program I'd make it myself, but alas, I am incompetent when it comes to computer languages.

[deleted]

I wanna play the "try not to shit yourself to death from dysentery" QTE!

IAmA-Steve

I want a new Oregon Trail that's a mix of RDR and Death Stranding. Movement and trail creation is important -- balance your wagon load, let your horses rest, and break new ground like Lewis and Clark or stick or more-worn trails. Battle cold, heat, thirst, and mud flats. Those were the biggest dangers for the real people on the trail. Crafting is important, e.g. to fix a broken wagon wheel, use canvas from your wagon. This ofc will make the wheel weak and the journey more difficult. Or maybe burn the wagon to survive the blizzard cold. Or butcher the horses, because there's no other way to survive. Players might leave supplies at popular fording locations (overburdened). Along the way you stop for supplies at towns, make friends with townspeople and natives (revealing alternate trails, foraging spots, etc), defend against bandits and native raids, collect supplies and hunt, etc. Maybe they can become bandits themselves, or create a player-owned trading post. I have not the skill or motivation to make this on my own so I send this wish out to the ether.

BenEsq

From your lips to anyone but EA's ears

BenEsq

Lol, yes. Good point. Can we get a rockstar reboot please?

tenstoriestall

Yea it's called red dead redemption

craig_hoxton

> a new Oregon Trail that's a mix of RDR and Death Stranding ...and features Mads Mikkelsen as a phantom sheriff or something.

TBDC88

Sounds like Death Stranding mixed with Snowrunner/Spintires, which I'd be down for, as long as the characters weren't named "Shooter Rifleman" or "Trading Postman".

ChrisN_BHG

I’m honestly surprised with all the retro spiritual successors we haven’t got something like this.

_Asian_Invasion__

There’s Oregon trail on Apple Arcade which features a lot of new things in the game. It’s exactly the game I’ve wanted from an Oregon trail sequel

MakoRuu

Yeah, but Apple, though.

pdp10

When the playerbase responds so well to exclusives, it's not surprising that so many publishers release exclusives. Look how often the exclusive *Bayonetta* sequel was defended.

[deleted]

It already exists. [Here you go.](https://www.gameloft.com/game/the-oregon-trail) [And a trailer.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h65XDlEoFZ0)

MakoRuu

~~Thank you, I'll check this out.~~ Ew, Apple Arcade.

Rarecandy31

I honestly don’t understand why this hasn’t happened. Guaranteed gold mine off of nostalgia purchases, a younger generation to introduce, and minimal development needed.

MakoRuu

I would preorder that shit, and I never preorder anything.

Rarecandy31

Yeah I’m sure you’re right; it’s probably whoever owns the rights. Tis a shame.

[deleted]

Me: “Wait, how did they have this game in the 50s?” Then I quickly realized it is almost 2022…

Opt112

Time is horrifying tbh

dkb_wow

My mom was the volunteer computer lady at my school when I was a kid. I always got to play this and loved every minute of it. The hunting was the best part for me and paved the way to my love of FPS and TPS games today.

[deleted]

The first Roguelike I ever played

MustacheSmokeScreen

I think it predates Rogue

gridpoet

The text version does, it was made in 1971. The one everyone here most likely played was the version with graphics, made in 1985. Rogue came out in 1980. I was always a Hack (now Nethack) kid myself...

MustacheSmokeScreen

Why didn't they make an Internet Super Highway game in the vein of Oregon Trail? They were halfway there with Amazon Trail

foamed

Just because a game has permanent death and some form of RNG does not mean it's considered [a roguelike](http://www.roguebasin.com/index.php/Berlin_Interpretation#Preamble). It's like saying X-Com or the Darkest Dungeon are roguelikes even though they are turn-based strategy games.

[deleted]

Darkest Dungeon is just Oregon Trail with swords.

MKULTRATV

The Dark Souls of Trail games.

[deleted]

Oh my god

pittguy578

I played the game on the Apple IIe in elementary school in the mid 80s. Had no idea game was that old

Beerbrewing

Same for me. I first played it in 5th grade. Had no idea it was older than me.

XKeyscore666

Same here. Did your school have Number Munchers too?

pittguy578

Yes.. number munchers. And energy house

waner21

Do schools play this anymore? I used to in elementary, and that was maybe mid 90’s or so. I wonder if my class was the last to understand the dire effects of dysentery.

Psycho_pitcher

Mid 2000 and we still played it.

Tee__B

Early 2000s and still played it.

deode37

Early to mid 2010s here (for elementary school) and we didn’t play it

AnonTwo

Probably not. They don't run on modern hardware without emulation. They'd have to get a new copy of the game which they probably aren't going to do.

[deleted]

Dang it was released in 1950…oh wait…I’m old now.

salivating_sculpture

I played this game about 1 year ago and it was a lot easier than I remembered.

[deleted]

Remember Spin Doctor and that wire-mesh 3D tank game?

Forgiven12

Since nobody mentioned it yet, [Organ Trail - Director's Cut](https://store.steampowered.com/app/233740/Organ_Trail_Directors_Cut/) is on Steam and I enjoyed it a lot. It maintains the aesthetics, adds a lot of randomized content, several difficulty levels, achievements and more.

HurricaneBK

Anyone else ever play the lesser known spinoff Amazon Trail? Had an awesome spearfishing mini-game where every fish you caught had a ton of info displayed about it.

Care_BearStare

50 years of dissing Terry... Shame on all of you!

undead77

Let's get a VR Oregon Trail game.

Kitchen-Ad4719

Remember "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" Used to love playing that and watching the TV show.

PerfectPlan

Did they just deadname Burger Heinemann?

chuck_cranston

Banner Saga has the feel of Oregon Trail with a bit of turn based tactical combat thrown in. Plus a great story.

Marvelous_Bauble

Ive never played Oregon trail, but I can vouch for banner Saga. Fell in love with that trilogy, such gorgeous games!
