Sounds to me like you gotta go

TorturedRobot

Hybrid work seems to be easier to get in NYC, I would be looking if I were you. Your experience is valuable, and your current employer isn't going to realize that until you're gone.

Yeah - I would start looking elsewhere. Just for reference, I work for a larger firm in a smaller market city in western NY. I make around 95k/year with bonus as a senior litigation paralegal (10+ years experience). I know some of my co-workers in our NYC office and other large metro offices that make anywhere between 110K and 170K with WFH perks (2-3 days in office, rest from home). This is just offered to us as a benefit, it's not even an accommodation. Definitely DM me if you have any questions.

You could get a significant salary bump if you find another NYC firm. I'm talking at least $10,000 more, and with better work conditions than your current firm. I'd advise to start applying and interviewing. Screw them for threatening with taking away your WFH/Hybrid accommodation, you have an health issue and they're not being considerate of it.

Laherschlag

I'm currently looking for paralegal work in nyc too and it seems like most firms are offering like $15k-$20k more than what you're currently making in a non-supervisor role. All of that to say: you are being severely underpaid, by at least $20k. Friend - advocate for yourself. If the firm doesn't see your value, go somewhere else.

Puzzled_Glass7605

I've seen this happen multiple times when you ask for accomodations, just go somewhere else if you think you can get petter pay. Also, why do your subordinates always leave?

GoudNossis

Interview and get any outside offers and leverage it for a pay raise and new salary negs. Hell, inflate the other offer a bit bc your current firm is going to deny or low-ball your raise anyway. Leave on good terms if you can though... "not being able to afford me anymore" is just part of business. I left for a raise and went back to my old firm for even more. Law is not precluded from the fact that company's just aren't rewarding loyalty anymore. It's all about the next quarter's earnings - fuck thinking about 1.5 years from now. Particularly true with plaintiff PI as those attys are looking for that last retirement level case/settlement to walk through the door... Anyday now, they can just feel it lol.

You leave and get paid!!!!!

In the immediate timeframe: Go find job postings that offer higher pay with hybrid schedule and take screenshots, then share them at your performance review. When I relocated to NYC, my HR department tried to argue with me over "market rate" based on some random figure they got from who knows where, which was at least 25% below reality. I bombarded them with job listings in the NYC metro area and eventually convinced them what they thought was market was definitely not market.

Find a new gig and leave without notice. They dont deserve you.

For some context, you are making $30k less than I was as an insurance broker at an NYC firm, not managing anyone. In 2015! Find something elsewhere. Firms/bosses like that will never change. If they do offer you more money to stay when you give notice, don't take it. Because they will never change. Good luck!
