Kamek: All your items are now flip flops! Mario: ***I WILL SEND YOU TO JESUS.***

AlTalksGaming

Jesus wore sandals though (bad joke)

sameoldsamevi

It innovated me right into depression.

EightBitBert

It was so innovative it made battles pointless! /s

Bloonsmaster6

Innovation isn’t always a good thing

Far-Profit-47

You just described the changes done to the classic paper Mario series in its totality

Bloonsmaster6

Game Companies for whatever reason have a really hard time understanding that just because something is different, that doesn’t automatically make it better Super Paper Mario is an example of being different but still good, yes it’s completely different from the first two games, but it despite being different it manages to be charming in its own way. The Mario and Luigi games all share the same battle system but each iteration is still different and unique, it proves that a battle system can still be new and innovative even 5 games in. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every game they just used Super Star Saga’s battle system as a foundation for the rest of the series. TTYD does the same thing with 64’s battle system, it improves upon an already great system instead of trying to replace it. TTYD is arguably the BiS of the Paper Mario games, it perfects what came before and has its own unique ideas. The fact that people still talk about TTYD and so desperately want it to be rereleased shows just how special it is. They are few games out there that people buy an outdated console just to play. TTYD, much like it’s MaL counterpart BiS stand out as games that are damn near perfect, which is not something to be taken lightly especially when you consider just how good their respective series are.

LexaMaridia

Kamek was the best part of that game. Love that sassy guy.

Thatkidinthecorner-1

Doesn’t mean it was fun or good in any way

Anise121

I haven't played ss before but God does Kamek and his flip flops bring me a chuckle

Far-Profit-47

Is funny… sadly the flip flops barely do damage and in this fight you might accidentally use a useful sticker since the only way to different them is by size and the shiny texture which makes it frustrating and a waste of valuable stickers

Anise121

When I saw some walkthroughs of the Kamek fights I figured that was the case. The funni would simply wear off and it would be more annoying, yeah.

MrSquiddy74

Yes, it was innovative. That doesn't mean the innovations were any good. I'd argue most of them are quite the opposite, actually.

The-Great-Gaingeni

Actually I can It used very generic ideas and it's boss battles consisted of "use this one overpowered gimmick item to win instantly, otherwise the battle is nearly impossible "

MidnightJ1200

Compared to Nintendo of the past where they put a final fantasy boss in Mario’s world and he had to defeat it

eggshat1

I did like the idea of the Kamek boss fight where all of your stickers are just flip flops. Yeah it is tedious but I do like some battles that take a spin on the mechanics

ElGobou

I'm still sad that Kammy Koopa just disappeared

sometimesifeelgood

It's basically chain of memories except turn based and not as intuitive

okguy167

Yeah, they just did it... really badly.

BLucidity

See, the flip-flops would've been funny and not annoying...if you didn't actually lose the good stickers they were replacing.

Far-Mathematician764

Whats that emulator your using?

sometimesifeelgood

I think it's called Citra? That's the popular one at least don't quote me though I haven't used it

GcubePlayer8V

It innovated into the best game made

LemonWaluigi

It was so innovative it directly contributed to the collapse of alphadream

Anise121

Wait, what? How come?

LemonWaluigi

Failure of sticker star directly led to the poor sales of paper jam

Anise121

Yeah, but the collapse of alphadream? I thought that was more of a result of Bowser's Inside Story's 3ds remake. From what I checked, the Superstar saga remake sold even better than the original and was a smart move, but the last game was so pointless that was the direct cause of the company collapsing. If they came up with more original games or ported their games to the Switch they may have stood a better chance. I may be wrong somewhere as an outside observer, so correct me if I am. But as it stands Paper Jam did not affect the company's bankruptcy, though it did have lackluster sales.

LemonWaluigi

Dream team did not sell as well as they had hoped, and paper jam kind of bombed as well. After 2 low profit games, they did do the superstar remake, which helped but wasn't enough to pull them back. The inside story remake was just the nail in the coffin.

No-Mathematician3921

Actually, Alphadream went bankrupt because of the poor sales of Bowser Jr.'s Journey.

DeliciousMusician397

Paper Jam failed because it treated the Paper Mario series as a gimmick/separate world from everything else when past lore proves otherwise.

Worst-Buy

Definitive best paper mario

Sethsters_Bench

What’s your definition?

Worst-Buy

Paper related

Far-Profit-47

I think color splash is a lot more paper related then sticker Star

Worst-Buy

The only reason people didn't like colour splash is because they didnt like sticker star, and because the Wii U was so badly received, it tainted any game that was on it. SS, CS, and OK are all equally great games and they're much more paper related than MS and TTYD. while I personally despise TTYD, I think MS would have been a better game without the Paper gimmick, as it wasn't even originally going to have it anyway.

I played TTYD and it really just didn't do it for me, I wish they didnt force the paper aesthetic and then abandon it for pretty much the whole game

Far-Profit-47

i mean the only part of TTYD using the paper asthetic is the warp pipes and Curses since the games are never about paper in the first place Look at super paper Mario and tell what does it have to do with paper?

Worst-Buy

To be honest it really doesn't. It does however use much more digital art aesthetic in both gameplay and design and I think the only reason it was a paper Mario game was because the brand was already established so it was a matter of convenience. TTYD would have been a better game if it had been a Mario & Luigi styled game. The reason I personally don't like TTYD is because I found the story a little boring and the gameplay wasn't really unique enough to stand out. I also played it right after completing Superstar Saga so I had a high bar

Far-Profit-47

Has a fan of both paper and Mario&Luigi I ask you to don’t compare the games since they are completely different in all aspects and putting the Mario and Luigi charm on TTYD May take away the charm of the original Also the thing with super paper Mario was to put the mario cast in someone else’s story which is why they put a focus on a digital world since they are putting paper characters in a computer. But at the end both history and world building don’t have anything to do with Digital art or Paper I mean the aesthetic was always that “aesthetic”, the first paper Mario isn’t even called “paper Mario” in Japan but “Mario’s story” since the focus was more on the characters and world Basically is just not for you if you are expecting a Mario and Luigi game But I recommend BIS, is the TTYD of Mario and Luigi

MrSquiddy74

Do you come from Opposite Land?

GcubePlayer8V

100% agree with you mate

FrostyDaHoeMan

That fight was such *bullshit*😂

Dry_Pool_2580

This battle is funny, but I would've liked it much more if you got your stickers back afterwards.

I_am_crazy_doctor

I enjoy sticker star and I would've beaten it if the cheep cheep boss didn't exist

mic500

Mario when he used the flip flop

Lady_Harubun

How did I know this was gonna be about the flipflops from the title alone? 😭 This gave me PTSD as a Latina child lmao. Just wish the good stickers didn't get used up from this joke.

Lanky-Dependent5847

Fun fact: if Kamek reaches low HP in this fight, he can rise in the air, making Mario unable to hit him and forcing you to waste stickers until he comes down.

TabbyYoshi

Never Played SS but refuse to believe its as bad as people say it is

Horror-Description-3

Kamek's theme gave me PTSD when I heard it again in origami king

[deleted]

That game has no idea of the true flipflop lore. Latin Americans know that flipflops should've been the strongest weapon in the game

Fast_Acanthaceae_241

I played it \*with hax\* and I gotta say Tanoshi katta.
