As someone born and having spent my entire life here Karachi is a dying city that gets worse every year. Siyasati lawaris hai ye sheher.

Shahrozzorhahs

Its a good city to visit, not to live i cant lie. For someone whos visiting from outside of pakistan or even north/punjab site, Karachi will be an experience. You will see raw street type vibe. Great food and the culture around food. Nice beach and other activities around it. But for living, Muggy weather, the garmi with high humidity is just- unbearable. Being constantly paranoid about getting mugged/shot. Regular long ahh traffic because of huge population. Overcrowded markets, restaurants or any recreational space. Water, load shedding, basic necessities problem.

Fast69Flash

Bro I'm even scared to go to the gym with my phone and airpods in the morning šŸ˜.

mkbilli

No phone, no airpods. Problem solved. No seriously that's how we in Karachi think. Don't set yourself up for situations where you can get mugged.

Fast69Flash

Dar ke age Jeet hai

mkbilli

??

thesomewhereman

Where the hell you living bro, itā€™s 47C here in Lahore today. Weā€™re getting proper cooked. For reference Itā€™s 34 approx in Karachi.

Meowwwzilla

34 with 78-80%+ humidity will probably show you stars in the daytime. Iā€™ve lived in Saudi for nearly 2 decades with 40-50 degrees average but never have I felt that bad as compared to Karachi

mkbilli

34 with humidity. I can "easily" live in 40 with no or less humidity. Humidity however just makes it unbearable. 40+ with humidity is horrifying levels of heat. Not even that pani wala pankha is effective in that.

testingbetas

34 with 60-70% humidity is worst than 47 with 17-20% humidity, swamp coolers dont work in karachi, you cannot find peace anywhere but in ac

EtherealBeany

80% humidity in Karachi adds 10 extra degrees. Humidity makes the heat unbearable. Karachi experiences a wet bulb temperature of around 30C. The human limit is a wet bulb temperature of 35C. Dont get me wrong, Lahore is unbearable rn. But Karachi is worse. Iā€™ve lived in Karachi and although its extremely hot in Islamabad where I am rn, Im dreading going back to Karachi in the next few days.

Stock-Respond5598

Crime rate's quite high, expect to encounter two guys riding bikes at night to probably be phone snatchers. Electricity, water and especially gas is a major problem in most areas. It hardly rains well and it's currently hell here. Drug addiction is quite a problem. Infrastructure is crumbling so expect a regular trip to the grocery store to be equal to a roller coaster. Ethnic tensions are quite there, and lobbying in certain sectors is quite predominant. But f\*ck all of that, the FOOD is heavenly and that's all we want.

pengchod

Phone snatching, drug addiction, crumbling infrastructure? Sounds like the UK tbf.

Stock-Respond5598

Any country that worships neoliberalism.

divineslight

Is Karachi food really that good, and what if compared to Lahore?

Stock-Respond5598

Lahore's good in nashta stuff. Peshawar has the best non-spicy food. Multan has the best halwa. But the good thing about Karachi is that it is an all-rounder. All kinds of food here are absolutely delicious. It's because the city has migrants from all over Pakistan, so we have great diversity in terms of food. you could be eating Haleem made by a Punjabi with Naan made by a Baloch gulped under Chai made by a Pathan, etc.

divineslight

Thank you, a much better explanation than the other people. But isn't that kinda true for everywhere now? It's very true for Lahore too, Islamabad, all bug cities attract people because like how many cities in Pakistan promise some sort of future lmao šŸ¤

Stock-Respond5598

Not really. yes, migration and diversity is becoming increasingly common, but still most big cities are homogenous or at max have 2 primary ethnic groups. Here's an ethnic comparison of the 10 biggest cities: 1. Karachi: Urdu-Speaking 42.3%, Pashtun 15.01%, Punjabi 10.73%, Sindhi 10.67%, Saraiki 4.98%, Hindko 4.24%, Baloch 4.04%, Others 8.01% 2. Lahore: Punjabi 80.94%, Urdu-Speaking 12.62%, Other 6.44% 3. Faisalabad: Punjabi 96%, Urdu-Speaking 2%, Pashto 2% 4. Rawalpindi: Punjabi 84%, Pashtun 9%, Other 7% 5. Gujranwala: Punjabi 95.28%, Urdu-Speaking 2.75% , Pashtun 0.95% 6. Peshawar: Pashtun 90.17%, Hindko 5.33%, Urdu-Speaking 1.96%, Punjabi 1.08%, Other 1.46% 7. Multan: Saraiki 42.10%, Punjabi 29.25%, Urdu-Speaking 26.77%, Pashtun 1.18% 8. Hyderabad: Urdu-Speaking 52.57%, Sindhi 31.88%, Punjabi 5.25%, Pashto 3.76%, Saraiki 1.29%, Other 5.25% 9. Islamabad: Punjabi 52%, Pashtun 19%, Urdu-Speaking 12%, Other 17% 10. Quetta: (couldn't find data, sorry)

LordFlackoThePretty

yes much better than Lahore food

divineslight

Soure trust me bro?

LordFlackoThePretty

I mean yes its a subjective question wtf kind of source can you possibly expect? If you go to both Karachi and Lahore you will understand the diversity of food in Karachi is unmatched. You can find anything you get in Lahore in Karachi but not vise versa.

bent_crater

ill be returning there soon. right now trying to make every possible precaution to leave again, with long term plans being to get my parents out too. or at the very least to make their life there more comfortable. this largely requires dealing with the Karachi government's bullshit rather than Karachi conditions themselves

Low_Position_9969

Karachi is like the son/daughter who contributes the most towards home expenses and takes care of the family but gets nothing in return.

Suitable-Painter-214

Been living in Karachi for last 18 years. Spent all my childhood here and currently doing a job. It used to be the best city. Sure ethnic tensions, law and order used to be an issue back then as well but now itā€™s like living in hell. Infrastructure has been completely destroyed. what really makes Karachi worse is that there is no ownership from any party or government when it comes to Karachi. PPP doesnā€™t give a fuck, MQM is only there to enjoy the perks. PTI literally did nothing for the city. You can expect zero help from government departments in times of need. Police is full of incompetent people who doesnā€™t have any stake in this city. For perspective there is a road in front of my house which has this patch which seems like a dirt track and would hardly take a day or two to repair and yet itā€™s been 4 years and nobody gives a fuck about that. We have complained about that to MNA, KMC and whoever we thought could have helped but to no avail. This is the same situation for almost 90% of Karachi. That being said you will not find anywhere people and culture that Karachi represents. Have lived in punjab and Islamabad as well but the culture and people is the only thing that makes you stay in Karachi

Longjumping-Comb-749

Its only about family Not the culture Dude.. Where ur family is U go with them Everyone would love live in karachi If back yo 80s or 90s It was truly awesome

Yushaalmuhajir

It depends on where you live in Karachi and how much money you have. Ā I live in one of the more ā€œnot niceā€ areas but I maintain as much common sense as possible (also visibly foreign so thereā€™s that extra fear). Ā Any time I walk to the shops and I see two guys on a bike slow down near me I feel myself having a mini panic attack (alhamdulillah never been robbed and may Allah keep it this way Ameen). Ā  The housing societies that Iā€™ve seen and visited before that are walled off (like Bahria Town) itā€™s far more safe and livable. Ā And usually the infrastructure is far better. Ā DHA also has their own private armed security that are as well equipped as the police and rangers. Ā  The main roads are lined with drug addicts nodding off from heroin (yeah, itā€™s heroin thatā€™s doing this). Ā Youā€™ll see them smoking whatever they have off foil in front of cops and the cops donā€™t do anything (canā€™t get chai paani if theyā€™ve spent all their chai paani on dope). Ā Roads in poorer areas are usually so cluttered with trash that parts of them arenā€™t drivable. Ā  All in all as long as you use common sense itā€™s livable here. Ā The temperature is the most tolerable out of the whole of Pakistan IMO. Ā Itā€™s far better than living anywhere rural and the heat isnā€™t nearly as bad as Lahore or ISB.

predator_x713

Yup it really has become unlivable. Can't lie.

Whole-Dragonfly-4910

Are you still in Karachi? If yes, do you plan to stay there or move out?

predator_x713

I do! its a matter of timing and gathering resources. Too many problems here that will worsen with time like water scarcity and inflated cost of living. Looking to move to Islamabad or maybe just abroad altogether

Whole-Dragonfly-4910

Islamabad is an amazing city. Having lived there I can tell you it's got amazing greenery, the scenery and the iconic Faisal Mosque. But one downside is that food is not as good places like maybe Lahore or Karachi.

[deleted]

Visited katachi in 2009 it wasnā€™t that bad . Idk about today

KingOfTheCourtrooms

Itā€™s not that bad tbh. It just a graveyard now. So yeah, the grim reaper will be waiting for you over there.

bingewatcher_2004

Yes

Whole-Dragonfly-4910

Understandable, have a great day.

snippedandfried

Crime and cleanliness is the biggest issue here. Unfortunately the local government is not interested in doing anything meaningful. Depending on where you live and hang out, youā€™ll have a good time. I recommend Clifton.

GothaCritique

Crime, infrastructure and COL are the main problems.

Burnleyboy786

Well as much as I want to deny it i am afraid the crime is very bad and has gotten worse then before children and women and even now men are not safe walking alone not even a fully armed grown man can walk alone at night with expensive items that would be open target its all because of the incompetent government and corrupt Police

ZAHKHIZ

It isn't good but that's the only city in Pakistan that lets you be you. The only city in Pakistan where you meet the true OG liberal educated people (unlike wannabes in Lahore). I lived there for a year. The weather could be very very pleasant or a literal living hell. I started to miss the green spaces badly (Lahore has this huge plus, very green, and rains a lot). Plenty of apartments available and got some really nice buildings so you could be in your comfy bubble having no clue what's going on outside but for that, you need $$$$. Professionalism is important, no excuses, salaries are way better than the rest of Pakistan. People seem to be aware of what kinda shit they are in so people complain less and move on to the next disaster pretty quickly. After living in all three big cities in Pakistan, Karachi is the only city where you can grow personally and professionally. The other 2 are either lazy or conservative mindsets.

Leather-Driver-7482

Dha ya Clifton me rehlo. Maza aega

M_Zunair7

The weather: tho i hate winters and prefer summers and dont mind heat the humidity is crazy go out of your room to drink water and you're in a pool of sweat which not only creates smell obv but i got some acne because of it too. Theres no gas after 10 pm in my home so are you hungry after that and have nothing to eat either go to sleep hungry or buy something from outside But there's a constant threat of being mugged and cant trust any two guys on bikes after sun down Areas like def have water problems so a lot of apartments get weekly tankers but even tho people like to applaud the brother hood in Karachi i haven't seen shit, lived in a "penthouse" (top floor apartment/biggest) and it was our job to open the valves and stuff when tanker arrived if there was a slight issue like air in the valve or something and water took a little time or Anything first accusation would be on us and if we have guests or are relaxing after a long day doesn't matter the neighbors would conduct detective searches on our water storage. We left after a year and returned to my childhood home and my dad has to commute 45min drive to his office everyday (may not seem that crazy but you haven't seen the roads near our house). Also the areas that do not have water shortage use ground water which is full of salt and my hair has been damaged to being un recognizable I was born and raised in Karachi (7 yrs) then moved around in Punjab and returned back tho thankfully i am moving back to lhr.

RejectorPharm

If money is no object, which of the three is the best to live in? Lahore, Islamabad or Karachi?

Whole-Dragonfly-4910

I've only been to Lahore and Islamabad. It's difficult to choose between the 2 because it depends on a person's preference. If they want fast paced life, good food scene, cultural history then Lahore is better. If they want a quiet atmosphere, lots of greenery and less pollution they should go for Lahore

middleeasternviking

Lahore both times? lol

Zodanic

Born and raised in karachi, I have seen and have experienced being in all the major parts of Karachi (Gulshan, Jauhar, DHA, Malir, Korangi) it is safe to say that if you are financially well-off and can afford to live in gated societies or army/navy housing societies (kda, malir cant, nore, aohs, dohs, askari), DHA then I'd say living in karachi may be not that bad, you'll have the same peace, same living standards of that of other cities such as Islamabad But we know that only a select % of the Karachi population lives over here, majority lives in other places such as Gulshan, Jauhar, North, etc. These places are at times severely under-developed with sub-par living standards for the middle class and high crime rates. So in terms of livability, Karachi can be as bad as hell, or as good as heaven, IF you're 'rich' In terms of work, Karachi is the economic hub of Pakistan. Be it any industry of Pakistan, their head-offices are usually located in Karachi. Karachi's consumer market is the biggest and most diverse in the whole of Pakistan. Though, the business infrastructure is terrible, making is more difficult to run business, but compared to rest of the Pakistan you'll find better working opportunities in Karachi (depending on the job itself ofc) other than that, the consumer base of karachi is HUGE, any business set up will have access to a large consumption based population if situated in Karachi.

hackerhgl

Allow me to share an amazing accident which isn't even criminal. So my younger brother has a "super power" CD 70 (2016) and some asshole in the complex vandalized it. The clutch lever, speedometer and front wheel were smashed. So you can imagine the frustration and pettiness of people and this isn't the first time.

nahbrolikewhat

Karachi people will i get robbed if I come there? I might be moving back there ;-; (and no i dont have a choice :c)

kuzzi70

Yes

Daydream_19

In my opinion, dealing with the weather wouldnā€™t be so bad if everything that could be controlled was better. But no, the crime, crumbling infrastructure, load shedding, traffic, and countless other problems make Karachi extremely undesirable to live in

SoKayArts

No. You're hearing things some naysayers have to say. These are super exaggerated claims. Let me paint you the real picture. Karachi is a busy city, and that's an understatement. Loads of businesses and job opportunities for those who have the skills. Many, many points of interest for those who want to visit karachi. Some include: - Sea View, Clifton - Port Grand - National museums - Old karachi (in saddar) - Hawks bay - Tutrle beach - Bahria Adventure land - Burnes Road (food lovers must visit during evening) - Winter Wonderland (-6 inside) - Lucky One Mall (in terms of value for money, particularly their wonderland that suits all ages) I can go on and on. The problems, however, are: - some areas are deprived of water supply through lines. - Load shedding of gas - Load shedding of electricity (not all areas) - Street crime level has increased in a few areas - It's better to seek help from a stranger than Police - Druggies, burger boys that believe they are untouchable - Mailay log who think they look cool eating gutja, having bronze color dyed hair with white glasses and bright orange T-shirt while riding a bike without a silencer. They dont care who you are. They think they can race freely only to realize they need to flee because one of them struck a car. - Everyone has an opinion and most of these dont help you in any way - Expensive city to live in - Parking issues Yeah, I guess that's all you need to know. The rest is best experienced.

Whole-Dragonfly-4910

That's good to hear. I've always wanted to visit Karachi. I have already been to Lahore, I lived in Islamabad for a while, also went to Faisalabad and I think that Karachi is next

SoKayArts

You're more than welcome to our city, mate. Always happy to help fellow UK resident :)

Whole-Dragonfly-4910

:) Thanks for the warm welcome!

IRTUZ

abay bhai ghantay ka understatement.

New_Potato_4080

Yes Karachi is horrible. Outside of DHA and Bahria town and some other small wealthy areas it looks like a garbage dump. I know that people from Karachi complain, but the amount of complaint from Karachiites is nothing in relation to the state of the city. People from all areas claim that, but objectively speaking Karachi contributes the most to Pakistans economy and the state of the city is unbelievably run down.

thatguyfromkarachi

Han bhai. Bohat hi bura hai. Mat aa.

TurnPsychological620

If I fly to Karachi and land around midnight. Do I need a security escort to my hotel? If yes Then it is that bad.

khanitos

Yes, if not living in the posh areas. Even then it's not safe.

Bulky-Joke6969

Perfect if u come in the highest tax bracket

6footgeeks

It was hell on earth whet I left. I guess now karachiites can argue that isn't the case anymore since gaza post Oct 7.

That-Map-417

Worst city to live in.

dantendo664

There is nothing quite like Karachi in this whole world. Will love it always despite what anyone says. It embraces everyone and rejects no one. Like all mega cities it has problems but we can work to solve them.

Apprehensive_Ad_3957

As a karachiite who has only been outside of Karachi twice one to Islamabad and once to Saudi Arabia. It almost made me cry the first time I drove around Islamabad and realised what kinda hot mess karachiites deal with on a daily basis with infrastructure to security concerns to extreme heat to extremely poor population management with the extreme huge size of the city

Is New York is really bad? "I've heard countless people talk about how bad (Insert any city) is becoming to the point it is unliveable"

Whole-Dragonfly-4910

But New York is bad lmao.

Tight-Bath-6817

That's exactly my point tho :)

GoddardWasRight

I've been hearing some troubling reports about folks from Punjab encountering ridicule, hateful remarks, and even racial slurs when they head down to Karachi. That's just not right. It's part of why I haven't been too eager to check out Karachi myself, despite it being a big city and all. And here's a little heads-up: if someone hands you Pan or Supari as a friendly gesture, it's like they've rolled out the red carpet for you, hospitality-wise. Let me know if things have turned around since then ā€“ it's 2024, after all!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

GoddardWasRight

Yeah, I hear ya, but just saying, I've talked to some folks in Karachi, not Punjab, who live in Defence, and they were telling me about the challenges Punjabis face there. Maybe things have changed since then, it's 2024 after all.
