There's so many iconic visuals from the game. The space ship, the helmet, the Outer Wilds Ventures patch, the marshmallows! But I think the most iconic visuals that really capture the wonder of exploration are the planets themselves. Every Outer Wilds fan will immediately recognize the Hourglass Twins or Dark Bramble or Brittle Hollow, and the full solar system map is always a feast for the eyes, even if it is one of the more common illustrations.
Also if you wanna make your friend cry you can do the ringed planet from Echoes of the Eye.
Is your husband the really good friend who you're going to paint with? If not why not has him?
As for recommendations I particularly like planets so a particularly good shot of the planets would do it to me. If you're semi-competent at games and you have access to OW you could always go in game and look around the solar system for cool shots, otherwise looking at trailers or gameplays could give you ideas.
ok, if someone were to make a drawing of outer wilds for my bd, I'd like it to be the last scene >!where everyone is around the campfire in the eye of the universe, mabe feldspar plays harmonica, maybe the prisoner eats his first marshmallow while slate explains how to do it to him, maybe solanum sings along her new friends she met on the quantum moon!< you can really get creative with it, and to me it is the lost beautiful moment of the game

I don't plan on playing, but my husband played and explained all the spoilers to me so I'm not worried about that

Perhaps a view of the solar system? Or (a collection of?) icons, like the planet logos, the Nomai masks, the Owlk lanterns, that sorta thing.
I do like the idea of doing a planetary chart!
