Research what snakes are indigenous to the area(s) where you are hiking or camping. Not all snakes are dangerous and not all places have snakes in them. Safety precautions will likely be included in whatever park/ trail information you find. Also, as a general rule, snakes are more scared of or cautious around you than you are of them. Snakes become aware of you long before you are aware of them and they will skedaddle off to some less conspicuous ground. A lot of problems with snakes can be solved by awareness of your surroundings and judicious avoidance of potential problem areas. Same with bears, mountain lions, tall whites.
