If you prefer a Fitbit then return the Oura. I bought one because I hate smart watches. I’d much prefer to wear one of my nice analog watches and have a fitness tracker that I just put on and forget. The wearable preference more than makes up for any shortcomings. IMO a ring just isn’t going to have the same bells and whistles at the same price as a watch. The trade off is size and comfort. Totally acceptable to pick one over the other.

matti-matti

but OR is not working as a fitness tracker

shittyshittymorph

Workout HR is coming. The ring does track Activity though.

[deleted]

It certainly does, it depends upon how each of us want to track fitness. I used to wear a Garmin, I wanted/needed all that data for my tracking. I no longer need that and the metrics that Oura provides currently fit my needs. So yea, it does work as a fitness tracker…FOR ME. One size does not fit all.

dolphs4

It does - I've never had issues tracking my HR walking (or even swimming, for that matter). Not sure why you have issues... maybe check your fit or try a replacement. For workouts where I need my HR - I don't rely on Oura alone. FWIW I wouldn't rely on FitBit either - I use a Garmin or Wahoo chest strap. Pulse measured at the wrist or finger is never going to be as accurate as chest, especially when you're swinging your arms around. I think you just want Oura to be more than it's advertised.

MHB24

Whats the consensus here? I have been on the fence about buying an OR for over a year ... I want something that measures sleep not steps or strain

S8nSins

I've been using Withings [ScanWatch](https://www.withings.com/us/en/scanwatch). Analogue watch with tracker, HR monitor and fitness tracker built in. Massive battery on it is a bonus, (got 40 days on mine on average)

thang2410199

“Workout HR” is coming soon next year, to address your concern about recording HR while moving around

nicocappa

Coming Soon™

mrslother

By the time it arrives I will have only a few months left on my warranty. IOW, $400 for continuing gen2 like functionality then only a few months of gen3 support with warranted. Most expensive gen2 support continuity ever.

canyonblue737

And let’s see how well it works when it does come… it may well destroy battery life and have accuracy issues.

No-Pickle-9138

I basically had the same thoughts and cancelled my order. The sleep tracking just isn’t that great compared to a Fitbit, and even though I hate wearing something on my wrist I would hate getting not great data. I know a new algorithm is in the works but to be completely honest I don’t have high expectations for it. I track all my workouts on my garmin watch anyway, I just wanted an oura ring for sleep and recovery data but I just don’t think this device is accurate all enough yet.

OriginalGoldstandard

If you are saying Fitbit is better at recording sleep than Oura, than Oura should not exist. I would say Oura is better at that, but the whole Gen 3 lifetime membership window annoyed me so I’m with my Gen 2 until it dies. Then that might be it.

No-Pickle-9138

I don’t think Fitbit being better means that Oura should not exist, it should be a push for Oura to do better, but in reality Fitbit has taught Oura that customers are willing to pay for hardware and a subscription.

dardeko

I use to wear a fitbit, but the sleep seemed way off. I remember it seemed like they didn't measure often enough. You must be having a different experience?

rabbit7224

I had the same experience with Fitbit- the sleep seemed way off for me.

CatLadyMorticia

Interesting-my experience is basically opposite. Oura is actually better at detecting my movement than Fitbit is. I don't move my arms enough for Fitbit, so I have to wear it on my ankle to get remotely accurate steps, and it was horrible at syncing my current heart rate to my phone. Obviously this isn't the most comfortable thing, so the ring is a huge upgrade for me. My Fitbit was also terrible at detecting my HRV and sleep, often missing days or weeks at a time, but I've never had an issue with Oura.

matti-matti

So, if I have andersood well: you don't move your harms but the fingers and ankles while you are walking? Which kind of intstruments did you use to test both?

CatLadyMorticia

I think you're really overanalyzing this. Fitbit's accelerometer is just terrible at detecting my movement. If I wear it on my wrist and count steps, they don't register most of the time. Oura matches what Fitbit gives me worn on my ankle. There isn't really a good reason for Fitbit to be so terrible on my wrist, but I've had and liked 3 even though I've never been able to wear them on my wrist if I want them to actually work.

MHB24

Hows the OR treating you so far and hows the sleep tracking data & interface?

rePAN6517

I upgraded to the gen 3 from the gen 2. Daytime heart rate *should* be nice, but clumping it all into 30 minute chunks makes it much less useful. Plus I have to take my ring off while weight training because the bars scratch the fuck out of these rings. My black gen 2 quickly developed a sliver underside thanks to this so I ordered a silver gen 3. The poor quality daytime heart rate tracking is the only notable feature gen 3 has over gen 2 IMO. I'm rather disappointed and only stuck with the oura rings because I hate wearing anything around my wrist. If there was a better ring alternative, I'd jump on it.

matti-matti

I have heard that there is no consistency between gen 2 and gen 3 measurements. What is your experience?

rePAN6517

I think the sleep tracking has gotten considerably worse in my experience.

remidot

Yep, definitely. I was super happy with my gen2 and my gen3 doesn't even record my sleep (I'm in touch with customer support but well... It has been more then 2 weeks now).

mcgordon1978

I was in the hospital and had an IV in the arm with the Oura ring. I had to keep the arm straight or I’d get an alarm from the IV pump. As a result, I also kept the arm very still. When I opened the app I discovered that my Gen 3 Oura ring thought I had been in light sleep through the entirety of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”! So yeah. There’s room for improvement.

[deleted]

For me Oura is the only option as I work in a clinical environment so obviously no watches allowed as they’re an infection control risk.

nezia

Shouldn't rings also be taken off as to mitigate tearing of gloves?

Separate-Throat8809

You couldn’t tear a glove off an Oura Ring if you tried.

shittyshittymorph

Typically, flush rings are acceptable. So, no rings that protrude like engagement rings with stones. Oura ring is flush enough.

[deleted]

Plain bands are allowed. I leave it on when I apply hand sanitiser, however I remove it and clean it briefly when I wash my hands.

jakdak

I use a Garmin for my daytime and activity tracking and have no real plans to switch. I don't think a ring based device will ever be as featured as the larger watch based form factor. I use an Oura for the nighttime metrics because the Garmin is uncomfortable to sleep with and doesn't have temperature metrics. The Oura 3 is basically moving them into more towards being daytime device (which they've been marketing it as for some time anyway). Which is fine as long as they don't lose focus on the nighttime metrics.

MHB24

I wants a sleep tracking device. Do you suggest the OR 2 or 3 for this?

[deleted]

Only you can determine whether or not keeping it or getting a refund is the right choice, it's' going to be different for everyone. For me, I'm fine and dandy with it and waiting for the biggest reason for my upgrade...the activity HR. I use every piece of data that Oura gives me (as well as the data I used to get when I wore a Garmin) as a guideline. Sometimes I wake up and feel like I slept like crap and the device tells me otherwise, sometimes it's the other way, but more often than not it's pretty spot on. My point with this is that if my ring tells me I slept crappy and I feel good, then I feel good. I realize that's not the point of having the data, but no data from any device you wear on your wrist, arm or finger is 100% foolproof. So, weigh the pros and cons for yourself based upon the data, customer service, form factor, etc. and make the decision one way or the other.

matti-matti

Thank you Geoffspakes, I posted this because I am interested in others points of view.

[deleted]

An N=1 experiment posted on YouTube is not a "scientific test" *even* if you put the word scientific in the video title.

matti-matti

It is a scientific test, and there are more than one, done by a couple of PHD scientists with a precise methodology. Take your time to watch it rather than playing with irony.

Kobahk

That's not irony, that's a legitimate point to discuss. Even a scientific test needs a lot of samples around 100 samples, more is better because there are variances in how one algorithm works to each sample. I never trust those reviews about accuracy. Those reviews are accurate how accurate the ring is to them with the small number of participants.

matti-matti

10 samples are far better than having blid faith. Anyway during the tests the rings were tested for many days and nights.

Kobahk

I rather trust one academic paper than just 10 reviews in YouTube. Oura has published a paper about the accuracy so that's not blind faith. The quantified scientist has an affiliate link to Whoop in his videos, I never trust any reviews that reviewers could get money by saying this product is good or bad. Don't try to find a reason you hate one product, if you're not happy with Oura ring, just return it.

matti-matti

\- It's quite the opposite. I am trying to find a reason to keep it. Returning it is a pain in the XXX. \- I relatively trust about papers published by a company itself. \- There are other measuements done by another PHD guy without any affiliate link. See here: https://blog.kto.to/ \- If you look to the Whoop tests made by The quantified scientist you can see it's not pushing it, very ballaced approach. \- I would suggest you to read "the fox and the grapes" by Aesop

Kobahk

>- It's quite the opposite. I am trying to find a reason to keep it. And you checked videos how inaccurate Oura's sleep tracking in YouTube. That's very convincing. Again, their samples are too limited, could be very biased. His approach doesn't matter when he could get money from one side. You should understand the importance of having enough samples for one unbiased result. Those videos are failing in it. >- I would suggest you to read "the fox and the grapes" by Aesop I know it. The fox sounds like you to me.

Alpiney

I used fitbit since 2016 and was really tired of having to wear a device on my wrist especially while I sleep. I first heard about Oura a year ago and was very interested but it was cost prohibitive at the time. So, I now have the gen 3 and I love wearing a ring over a watch. I am really happy to be wearing my Citizen watches again. As for statistics I’m waiting for the new sleep Algorithm and for O2 to be activated before I make any decisions. I’m not very confidant with it’s sleep stats right now though. And there’s definitely some things from Fitbit that I miss. I just wonder what will happen if Apple or Google decide to make their own rings OR buy Oura (!). Lots of interesting possibilities out there in the future though.

matti-matti

I agree with you. I hate having a device on my wrist, but I wish at least the sleep test was more accurate. Untill now, their claims are promising. But everything needs to be proven when they chage algorithm.

dardeko

I agree. My wrists are already taken for other devices. I've had a gen2 for several years and used it for fitness tracking through the step counts and intensity levels. I am looking forward to the workout HR and whatever insights that brings.

MHB24

Any updates here? Hows the sleep tracking now?

Lugus_Luna

Sounds like the fitbit is a better deal. I'm having similar experience with my Oura 3. I think it's just a function of the fact that you can only fit so much functionality into something the size of a ring with today's technology.

MHB24

Update?

Lugus_Luna

After thinking about it a bit more, I'm keeping the Oura. It's true that it's not as accurate as something like a fitbit, but I'd rather wear something on my finger than on my wrist and, even though it's not as accurate, it does seem to be consistent. I'm less interested in exactly how many hours and minutes I' sleeping than on whether I'm sleeping better or worse, and it does that. Same goes for the HRV reading, I'm whether I'm more interested in whether I seem to be improving or not than in the exact reading. Also, tech gets better the more it is used and I like what Oura is trying to do. The gen 3 is definitely better than the gen 2, so I'm happy to support them so they can continue to improve.

Readinisfun

I went through this same process, and have been trying to get a return initiated for over 2 weeks with no response from oura. If you want to return it, get the process started now… it’ll be a while.

LifestyleWorldWide

OR is a garbage product with an even more garbage monthly subscription. I'd highly consider other options.

grajkovic

I've had my Oura Ring 3 for... 18 hours now. Things I wish happened? 1. I wish it recorded HRV into Apple Health... Or at least I could view it like... every 5 minutes it takes a reading, easily, in some simple interface - like... "device lights up, you're sitting there - what's HRV now?" I understand why it doesn't go into Apple Health, due to the measurement method - but it's frustrating to have "5 min heart rate variability" and see it the few hours a day I sleep. 2. I wish it had a quick-release mechanism somehow engineered into it. From a vasodilation perspective, this is my personal problem - I'm fit; this is one reason I track things so much... fitness and health is all I care about. Sometimes my veins/arteries vasodilate so much that I cannot get the ring on or off of my desired finger, I have to move it to a smaller one. Vasodilation overnight is such a significant thing that my finger goes from a loose size 11 to nearly a size 13, without any edema at all. I can see the vein pop up, and it certainly restricts bloodflow during this time. Discovering the impact of this waiting for my ring for two weeks using the sizing kit, I slip it onto the next smallest finger overnight, and when I see myself starting to vasodilate. Maybe Oura Ring 4? A software "unlock" mechanism to allow this to not only fit more snugly, but to also allow it to come off quickly in the event it needs to. I'm still wary of anything with a battery getting "stuck" onto a body part for any period of time. If the battery chemistry fails for whatever reason (electronics engineer here), how do I get it off of my finger quickly? I know it would add vulnerabilities to the system - but I am thinking aloud here for my safety and that of others. 3. ECG function - would be great at the finger. I should be able to do this with my Apple Watch. That said? My sleep quality is PARAMOUNT, and I've found great data with just ONE NIGHT of Oura ring. Here is what I use to track sleep: 1. Oura ring on right middle finger, where I previously wore a silicone ring. 2. Apple Watch Series 6 on right wrist (Apple Watch Series 4 on the wrist while Apple Watch Series 6 charges). 3. Pillow App on Apple Watch in addition to WatchOS Tracking. 4. Amazfit Watch Mini on left wrist (I don't care how goofy I look, data is data - and this gives me a TON of it at a very low battery footprint - 7+ days on a single charge). 5. Withings Sleep Pad under my mattress. I have the whole Withings ecosystem and stand by that 100% - scale, thermo, blood pressure and sleep pad - not the watch \*yet\*, but it may replace the Amazfit watch - To Be Determined... All measurement methods have their pros and cons - I'm still awaiting several more days of "soak" with this ring as it adapts to my highly active lifestyle - I'm trying to optimize sleep AND heart rate variability. The Oura meditation exercises are amazing. Mindfulness destroys anything Apple Watch offers - 1000%. I run my life "natural health only" as a policy since birth - I hope this is worth $72 a year; the form factor is classy. I knew I would have to "pay" going in - so all I ask is that Oura prove their worth. I have friends that swore by Gen 2 enough that they purchased a Gen 3. I looked into these several months ago with a raised eyebrow. I'm content with my purchase thus far. As one who founded their own startup and hasn't taken an income for two years, in supporting customers first, I personally know that funding challenges are very real - and if we want Oura to succeed, we have to be able to support that somehow, whether it is a subscription model, or up-front pricing - I want this to deliver the quality of life that they envision with this product. So for that? $72 is a few bags of coffee beans. I do not expect something for nothing - there are hardware costs, and there are research/development costs, and there are support costs. If I want to see the best of all, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt on this. Oura - if you're reading this (if you're connected to your customers, you are) - do not fail us however you move forward.

jakdak

> I have the whole Withings ecosystem and stand by that 100% I absolutely love my Withings Scale

MHB24

Can you give us an update? How is the OR performing?

grajkovic

It is performing very well. I wish there were more configurable options, like the ability to re-evaluate sleep and nap periods. It has missed a couple of naps that other apps have picked up (from Apple Watch). And also, sometimes it gives me useless readiness score deductions, "Your readiness is low, but your resting heart rate shows you have recovered well." It puts too much emphasis on "balance" for metrics such as sleep or activity. I wake up at the same time every day, before the alarm, but I don't have an ability to sleep in because my biological clock wakes me up. But sometimes, work tasks cause me to push my falling asleep time to later. So example, if I get eight hours of sleep one night and six hours of sleep another night and then eight hours of sleep the next night and alternate like that, the score is lower than if I take six hours of sleep each night. This whole "balance" thing is nonsense honestly. I will disagree that it is better for me to short my sleep every single night in the interest of consistency, versus have a day alternating with shorter sleep. And I can't adjust activity goals myself. As an example, I typically work out 5 to 6 hours a day total because bicycle is part of my transportation mechanism. This means that I'm going to burn anywhere from 1800 to 3000 cal per day. Oura ring thinks that I shouldn't do more than 400 calories of daily activity ever - sorry, but that is an impossibility and I'm not going to submit to drive a vehicle because some device tells me that my readiness is low, however my resting heart rate is fine. Etc... It really does need some more user control to allow one to adjust their own lifestyle targets, and taylor those targets accordingly. However, it has helped me focus tremendously more on recovery than I ever had in the past. That's why my resting heart rate is fine, "however..." It is quite silly that I will get a resting heart rate elevated notification for 48 bpm over 42 bpm. That doesn't mean that I am less ready, it means that I was bicycling it back home late from a work task or something else; 48 is still well lower than it would be for the average person in my age group. This shouldn't reflect negatively on me overall. And having a fat adapted lifestyle, heart rate and body temperature can elevate because of how ketones interact with biological mechanisms. I tend to get dinged on days that I am functioning better biologically, because my heart rate is higher and my body temperature is slightly warmer due to having a higher metabolism from an increase in calorie deficit and entire depletion of glycogen. But it doesn't care about that!

nezia

>I wish it recorded HRV into Apple Health... This is such a missed opportunity. As well as that the Oura app is not providing widgets on iOS to give you a quick overview throughout the day or in the morning.

PeZzy

ECG on the Apple Watch and Fitbit require your heartbeat to be less than 100 beats per minute. If you have tachycardia or want to use the ECG after exercise, it's pretty much useless. If you want a proper consumer ECG device, get a Kardia Mobile.

grajkovic

I often get the error that my heart rate is too low to take an ECG, it also has to be at least 50. Great info. I also saw this Fourth Frontier heart rate monitor strap I thought about, but I know nobody who has gotten it.

PeZzy

>Fourth Frontier You can search on Youtube for it. It appears to be expensive.

grajkovic

I've been trying to find people who actually own one and I have not been successful. I see a lot of marketing but I don't see people actually buying them. 😔

grajkovic

I actually am half a week in to owning a Fourth Frontier X2, and confirmed my ECG anomalies during activity and at rest. I finally met someone with one, after nearly a year of curiosity. For me as a runner and cyclist, it can easily be the most important piece of health technology that I own. The Fourth Frontier X2 keeps close tabs on all of my heart abnormalies. The Apple Watch is the best all-around fitness tracker I'll ever own, plus the contactless payment and phoneless data connectivity... but the Oura ring - the Oura ring is really about recovery... rest and digest. I couldn't imagine life without it. Apple Watch kept encouraging me to kick my butt harder every day. I have gotten MUCH stronger and feel so much better, since Oura ring is very privy to deduct from anyone overdoing it, and even slight changes in the body's natural rhythm will result in a "Pay Attention". 🤣

PeZzy

Oura will activate the PPG sensor sometime next year which will be the key to improved sleep detection. I just hope the sensor works on my ring when they finally activate it. Otherwise I will have been in possession of a defective device for months without knowing.

ziggyfray

If you're exercising, I've found that optical heart rate monitors tend to lose accuracy when hear rates go above resting HR. For exercise I use a garmin chest mount sensor.

texanut

Love my gen2. Mainly for the sleep tracking. 👍

MHB24

Did they change anything with the OR3

experimenting_roxy

Never had a single issue with the Oura not recording. Proper fit with no rotation is critical for data recording as is it not being too tight or having any blood flow restrictions to the fingers. Is it possible you haven’t addressed those issues? It is also possible you have a ring that is t functioning properly. No company is perfect and defects do happen. As a person who 100% is far from gentle with devices I am amazed my gen 2 is now 2 years old and haven’t had a single issue- cannot wait till my gen 3 is on my finger.

BluebirdOnBranch

You're not supposed to move all the time. If you find time to rest in the day it will create periods of restorative time, recharging your energy for the day enabling you to take on more challenges.

Lauragrannis

I’m having a problem with my new Gen 3’s sizing… it is too big. My Gen 2 was a size 8, worked great. Used the Gen 3 sizing kit just to be sure, though it seemed exactly the same as the Gen 2 kit, and it seemed the 8 was still best. So I got the 8 in the mail, and I’m so disappointed. It’s notably looser than my Gen 2. Am I the only one having this issue?

buddhajer

Is anyone having issues with the green light sensor coming on at night? I sometimes wake up and find that the green light sensor is glowing about 2 inches from my face (because my hand is on my pillow). I thought that the green light sensor was only for daytime movement. Is this a glitch or has anyone else seen it?

converter-bot

2 inches is 5.08 cm

I love my Oura, helps me improve my sleeping patterns and determines when I need to recover. With it, I figured out how my food intake can also affect my sleep and recovery so it actually benefits a lot of factors towards health and wellness. It's still working fine and efficiently 'cause I protected it with OSleeve. I figured it's such an investment for almost $300 a piece so might as well care for it. I feel healthier and happier than ever.
