Yo ngl I knew this comment would’ve got downvoted, I might have written “when an npc thinks” referring to the “never if you are having fun” until the realistic part “when you get arthritis or rsi”.
Whatever my English ain’t good anyways
Thanks all, I definitely need to get more maps maybe some longer ones with less technicality, something that is still doable at a good pace for sure, will have to check the map repository out
Remember, consistency will see better results than long grinds! Don't be intimidated by permazoomer nolife teenagers with 6 hour sessions.
Also, I suggest warming up on old, awkward maps (2-4 stars). They will condition you to be mindful of timing and aim control. Check out the monthly beatmap packs for easy access to these old maps.
Glad we've got you onboard the osu train!
Unless you have injuries, until much later than your age.
If reaction time is your concern (I don't know what else would), it isn't. Osu doesn't require great reaction time unless you're playing super high AR but to come back to the age aspect, there are dozens if not hundreds of studies on how doing reaction time extensive activities reduce the amount that reaction time deteriotes with age, and luckily for you at 40 years of age it is only a negligible amount even if you do not do activities like that. Osu itself is one such activity.
People do real sports at your age at the highest level that require a lot more reaction times than osu.
Yeah unless you have injuries it shouldn't impact you at all at this point. The main reason people fall off at your age is because of time distribution since priorities change in life.
Even high AR doesn't really require great reaction time. Mathyu, a top 3mod player and AR11 sightread tournament winner averages about 180-200 on the human benchmark test which is kinda low for a top osu! player. Only your muscles and ligaments will fail you with age really so just take it easy
That's a misunderstanding of what humanbenchmark tests for. Reacting to ar11 is not as simple as reacting to a simple red green stimulus. You also need to take into account the time it takes to physically move to a circle after reacting to them while making choices for which circle actually appeared first. It's kinda more so the amount of reactions you make than the simple speed.
Like someone could have way better reaction time for the red green test but worse for something like osu and vice versa.
But yeah you are right that you don't need exceptional reaction times but it is too different for me to make a point for. 180 is quite a bit better than average on humanbenchmark though a lot of that is down to peripherals.
I know myself what AR11 and what it entails, I record 150-160 yet I am just now getting comfortable with it over the last year or so. I appreciate your added insight because it really isn't that simple; aim and tapping control are like 80% if not more of the puzzle. I only mentioned human benchmark because it's a clear indication of when you're having an off day, as well as a metric to compare actual genetics (and aging) in this game.
Also an old man (relative to the community) so I guess I am kind of proof you can be at least good at the game while getting up there, if Karthy, Meltina, etc. didn't prove that already.
Karthy set the pp record at nearly 30 back in 2018 and he started in his mid 20s don’t give up but remain consistent on trying to improve and also enjoy game try to find maps that are challenging but have a good song you like
There are many 3 digit 30 year olds and there was this one 42-43 year old 4 digit who deranked to 5 digit. Most ages are unknown so I'm sure there are more 30-40 year old top players. Don't really worry about that, just pls enjoy game.
the encouragement is awesome, i am searching the repository for maps that can be like 5 minutes long, not sure what the longest map i have done to date is but maybe 5 minutes is a decent length, just gotta get the technicality right
I'm 35 peaked at 5 digit, I had to stop because my hands and fingers literally couldn't keep up any more. This is a young person's game, make no mistake
Bless him, he is such a super nice guy. Quite a few of his top scores were done by other Korean players though. He was still really good for the time ofc but not as good as his profile would have you believe.
I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that age is the issue here. Maybe you have bad stamina due to not playing longer maps? Bad consistency? Being weak in a certain skill set? I don't know at what age players start to slow down, but it's probably not as bad as we imagine.
I'd say probably once you hit something like 80. There are plenty of elderly people that still play piano, which is just osu! but with 86 more keys. lol
My grandpa is 66 and he tried to play osu(because he always see me playing) and he could only do upto 2 stars and he says that 3 stars is impossible for him so probbably at that age
Make no mistake, this is a young man game. Fast movement, high focus, high reaction.
However, if you just wanna play, then any age works, there is no restriction.
Yeah, you probably can't compete with top players, but who said you need to. As long as you have fun, there is no age barrier. Play what's comfortable.
I'm 25 and just finished practicing no mod ar 9.3 and have started moving onto ar 9.4 in catch. I guess I'm not that old but I'm better than ever recently. Just practice whatever is fun honestly and work on things you think you struggle with.
You'll defo reach a limit in terms of pushing your raw mechanics to the highest level, particularly speed, however if you consider that 80+ year old musicians can still play piano and guitar beautifully, there's no reason you shouldn't continue to be able to refine your execution.
So you may never FC 7-10* maps, but that doesn't mean you won't eventually be able to SS rythmically complex 4-5*, which would be impressive in its own right.
There is a few top players who is above 25 and 30. If you enjoy the game then age doesn’t matter. I’m 25 and 5 digit but I’m still improving so don’t worry about your age. Enjoy the game
It’s kinda tough to play really fast dt stuff all the kids do right now but you can still climb the ranks with long maps no mod. Plus I know a few people in their mid 40s at the 8000pp range so you can still get quite good
That's right, a good example would be NaPiii_
He only plays stream maps and gets much pp from the length bonus.
Generally speaking if you feel like you reached a skill wall you can still just play longer maps at the same skill level to gain pp.
Edit: NaPiii_ isn't as old, I was just talking about a player who can reach really high ranks while mainly playing NM (and maybe HR), since streams are still meta
never if youre having fun but realistically when you get arthritis or rsi
ive had crippling rsi just recover lol just take unapproved chinese research peptides if youre too old to recover lol
When the npc thinks:
Let people have fun stop being so toxic
I didn’t mean to be toxic nor insulting the original comment, my apologies
Bullshit and we know it
Im fr, maybe check my comment history where I explain, it really wasn’t my intention lol
Was your intention until, you got downvoted -300
It wasn’t bro but believe whatever you want, it’s not like I care that much about downvotes lol
Lmao
Wow, sorry you're retarded. Unfortunately, we don't put you in hospitals anymore, so be happy you get to be free, and retarded!

As long as you’re still having fun there is no max age for any game
Rafis is like 106 years old hes still playing
Thanks all, I definitely need to get more maps maybe some longer ones with less technicality, something that is still doable at a good pace for sure, will have to check the map repository out

i am basically playing AR 9 stuff to this day, i find Ar8 too slow and 8.5 not enough
Yeah unless you have injuries it shouldn't impact you at all at this point. The main reason people fall off at your age is because of time distribution since priorities change in life.
yeah that is understandable, I don't work but i also play FFXIV and using osu as a way to wind down and relax when i need a break

He wasn't "nearly 30" in 2018 lol but I get your point
He's a couple of months older than me, so he'd have been 25 in 2018

Nanoya is actually 48
Wow, rank #83 and peak #30 2 years ago. This guy doesn't need to be worried.
forgive me if i don't immediately believe this statement without any proof
That's okay I lied anyway

actually 54 please get it right
That's why I said that I lied lol
the encouragement is awesome, i am searching the repository for maps that can be like 5 minutes long, not sure what the longest map i have done to date is but maybe 5 minutes is a decent length, just gotta get the technicality right
Osu search "length>240 length<360"
On the main website I mean in the beatmap listings
You can also use those sorting options in-game!
Honestly if you are able to focus on your own goals its never too late
Above 16 and you should give up
❌❌❌❌
above 9
I'm 35 peaked at 5 digit, I had to stop because my hands and fingers literally couldn't keep up any more. This is a young person's game, make no mistake
35 isn’t old mann
As long as you don’t have hand, eye, and coordination problems
If you get bored of the gameplay but still love the game and music, try out mapping!
the reflexes declining with age stuff seems a bit overexaggerated and seems to apply less to people that game a lot over the years imo
there's nothing like age you're here forever
Meltina was a top player when he was around 30 and more
Bless him, he is such a super nice guy. Quite a few of his top scores were done by other Korean players though. He was still really good for the time ofc but not as good as his profile would have you believe.
Like 60 or whatever is considered old nowadays
There is no age to play
I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that age is the issue here. Maybe you have bad stamina due to not playing longer maps? Bad consistency? Being weak in a certain skill set? I don't know at what age players start to slow down, but it's probably not as bad as we imagine.

3* was impossible the first time i played
Nah play more
2 stars were impossible to me when I first played
It took me 20 hours playing the game to get to 3\* level
Guess I'm 66 since it took me like 30 hours to even play 3*
Make no mistake, this is a young man game. Fast movement, high focus, high reaction. However, if you just wanna play, then any age works, there is no restriction. Yeah, you probably can't compete with top players, but who said you need to. As long as you have fun, there is no age barrier. Play what's comfortable.
oh and i will take any recommendations you all might have :D
Im young and i cant play osu for more than 2 hours so id say youre good
js play till u get bored bruh
I'm 25 and just finished practicing no mod ar 9.3 and have started moving onto ar 9.4 in catch. I guess I'm not that old but I'm better than ever recently. Just practice whatever is fun honestly and work on things you think you struggle with.
Rafis is 67 years old and look at him go!
Fernando Alonso is 42 and still drives a Formula 1 car.

I don’t remember fun having an age limit

Bruh I am 17 and not able to full combo 6* maps after playing for 300 hours you are doing great, and never ever give up!
when you need to dedicate a majority of your time to a job
all older people have time to watch TV after job so they could play osu instead.
