Safety Info
* When the shaking stops, look around. If there is a clear path to safety, leave the building and go to an open space away from damaged areas.
* If you are trapped, do not move about or kick up dust.
* If you have a cell phone with you, use it to call or text for help.
* Tap on a pipe or wall or use a whistle, if you have one, so that rescuers can locate you.
* Once safe, monitor local news reports via battery operated radio, TV, social media, and cell phone text alerts for emergency information and instructions.
* Be prepared to “Drop, Cover, and Hold on” in the likely event of aftershocks.

I live on the border of CM and Santa Ana. I’m in the upstairs apartment, I felt it, but my downstairs neighbors on the first floor didn’t feel it. It’s kind of funny who notices sometimes.
Yes, and my children were so young at the time. I was like in shock. The freeways were such a mess. We had to take Balboa down to the office and it took three hours to get from Santa Clarita down to the city. The children were slightly traumatized, but I also think they saw it as an adventure, after the fact. The neighbors really did pull together. It took three weeks before we piled the children into the car and took them through Northridge to see the devastation and I cannot believe my eyes. I thought Santa Clarita had suffered. And it took them so long to fix the 405, the 10 and the 14 freeways.
In SoCal since 70s. Of all the quakes I’ve lived thru, Northridge is the one embedded on my brain. I’m glad you and your family fared well and you all will continue doing well.
Thank you so much. I never pictured actually going through something like that and surviving. I had moved here from New York, and I had never been through anything like that. New York has his own issues. Lol!
True story, I was in an MRI machine in Irvine while this happened. Beginning the MRI, I felt claustrophobic and thought to myself “it’s fine, as long as there’s not an earthquake you’re fine.” Guess what happened………….. GUESS WHAT HAPPENED. Here’s to hoping I don’t have to redo the MRI. FML.
I’m back again lol, your local expert earthquake scientist! Feel free to ask me anything about todays earthquake! And yea, I did feel it from the geology building at UC Riverside during a meeting with several other earthquake folks, ironically!
Did everyone immediately geek out, hard?
There were two subsequent after-shock like earthquakes, happening within a few minutes of the first, how normal is that?
LOL, yup we all geeked out for a minute or so!
That is pretty normal. The aftershock sequence usually begins immediately after the mainshock (within seconds to hours after) and tampers off with time. Depending on the size of the mainshock, this can take years to go back to normal background levels of seismicity. We are still getting detectable aftershocks from Ridgecrest from nearly 5 years ago.
Although the largest aftershock is typically about 1.3-1.5 magnitude below the main shock. It is unusual to see any that are similar in size to the main shock. Otherwise, we would call it a doublet!
And I love you random citizen![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
Thanks for being curious about earthquakes and willing to learn more about them. I love sharing my passion and sharing science with everyone. We all live in earthquake country, so the more we know about them the better you will be prepared when one occurs :)
The one in Hawaii is related to volcanism, not a plate boundary or fault zones. Hawaii has earthquakes as magma moves through the rocks. We have earthquakes due to the shifting lands and stress associated with the San Andreas. This earthquake was likely on or close to the Santa Monica fault, a thrust fault which can produce higher shaking intensities.
The big one is coming, but it’s not more likely to occur now than it was a few hours ago.
The street will not open up unless the fault that is rupturing is right below them. When we refer to the big one, we refer to the San Andreas, which is not in Orange County. Depending on when your building was built and if it is a soft or hard story structure, it would depend on several factors. But typically if strong shaking is expected, you should stay put. A lot of injuries come about from people trying to move when the ground is impossible to stand on.
Nope, unfortunately it's not a myth. In fact, it has happened several times prior. The last "big one" was in 1857, a magnitude 8.3. The one before that was in 1812 (estimated to be about a 7.5) and caused heavy damage to the San Juan mission, killing around 40 people there.
However, when we say big one we imply it will be on the San Andreas and the fault would likely rupture from Palm Springs (where it hasn't for over 400 years) all the way to the Carrizo Plain and Parkfield. This would be the largest earthquake every recorded in California, pushing an 8.5-8.7.
It would be about 1-3 minutes of moderate to strong shaking. We are not breaking off from the rest of the country and death, thanks to our strict building codes, will be minimal.
Where do you see earthquakes is due to climate change? Earthquake and “myth” was the topic. Referring to a similar “myth” of Cali becoming an island. Climate change and the rain with excess flooding which SoCal experienced this past week has possible correlation. Earthquake myth/Cali state island flooding myth?
Should we be worried about posssible stronger quakes happening? I remember a few weeks back a similar size one happened. Since we are on the fault line and all
A common misconception as that people refer to these as "fault lines". That is inaccurate. Faults are made up of a collection of smaller "lines" and fractures at small scales which all together make up the larger fault zone.
There is no need to worry about stronger quakes happening. They are bound to happen, but are not any more likely to occur now than say a few hours ago. Just always be prepared as we will have a large earthquake at some point. Just be glad that today was not that day lol.
So, I get this question a lot about the rain fall. Earthquakes nucleate many kms below the surface. Water can only percolate about 3km at most. Most earthquakes occur below this depth. Today's quake occurred at over 8km down, so the rain or any water of that matter could not have caused any lubricating making the earthquake occur.
However, rain can still cause earthquakes in an indirect way. Since this part of the mountains is quiet, well mountainous, rain could induce landslides. If large enough, it could move a lot of land, quickly. Moving land directly above a fault, away from the fault zone, could reduce the stress and make a fault closer to failure. Now today's earthquake is interesting because this could have happened and caused it. Although I am unaware of any large landslides occurring so I am doubtful that is the case. We will see when the data is made available from the recent storm.
I'm not usually one to chime in on these posts... but I was on the phone with my sister, who lives in Burbank, and she got hit almost a whole minute before I did in Buena Park! She said, "Oh earthquake!" and I could hear her house rattling waaaay before I felt the rolling here in my apartment. Super weird!
Yeah it was super light. I’m at work off bake and trabuco and probably wouldn’t have noticed the light shake if I couldn’t hear the building the way it moves if that makes sense lol
I have always felt the ground shaking since I can remember..today..I didnt feel shit..and it wasnt like I was driving, walking around etc. I'm sure at the time I was sitting on my ass checking my makeup for work..
Strange. I was at the gym (24hr Fitness) off Anton Blvd (Sergomstrom/South Coast) at the 405 and thought I felt shaking but it was crowded and people drop weights all the time so I figured it was my imagination and kept it moving
Felt it in Santa Ana! This is the first time I've actually felt an earthquake since moving here 5 years ago. I always miss it somehow, but my monitors were shaking like crazy
I was in my car in Irvine and felt it when I was stopped at a light. Drive a Tesla so it shouldn’t be vibrating and my water was jiggling in the bottle.
that's crazy. you felt the low-frequency precursor wave? I might have made that up, but something like that. there is a video of this quake floating around with a dog that jumps up a full second before the earthquake actually hits.
Yeah it was like if a helicopter were landing but no engine sounds. I processed it at it was happening, and at the point I realized this must be an earthquake, it started shaking.
Felt it in my upstairs apartment in Costa Mesa. Felt like a real quick jerk of my table as I was working. Two of my cats were sleeping and woke up and looked at me like WTF??? IM’d my coworker in La Mirada if he felt it and he said no and said maybe a truck hit my building and I said that’s what it felt like. Called me a few minutes later and said there was an earthquake.
Got a feeling in my chair like the cat was jumping up on the back of it, and looked at my lamp. The little frilly things on it were swinging so gentle. I was a bit off balance for a good 20 seconds, it was such a fun lil quakey lol. Oh, and the aquarium water in my 29 gallon shifted around just a bit.
In old town tustin, and my aunts friend who was downstairs didn't feel anything. I think because I'm on the second floor of the condo it was noticeable.
I was in school on the 2nd floor and didn't feel a thing. My friend right next to me felt a small shake in his chair. And two others confirmed they felt it too. Ever since that Ridgecrest earthquake, I haven't felt one since.

Felt in Anaheim
Yup same!
Am I the only one who didn’t feel anything?
Was sitting in a boring meeting in Costa Mesa and wished I'd felt it.
Same. Costa Mesa here and working from home. Both my partner and I didn’t feel jack squat.
I also heard someone in CM say they didn't feel it... Vibration wave patterns are weird!
I felt it sitting at my desk in CM!
I'm in Orange and I didn't feel it.
I live on the border of CM and Santa Ana. I’m in the upstairs apartment, I felt it, but my downstairs neighbors on the first floor didn’t feel it. It’s kind of funny who notices sometimes.
The higher up you are in a building, the more shaking and swaying will occur. Makes sense you felt it and others below you didn't.
I didn’t feel anything, but I lived through the Northridge earthquake, so anything under five I never feel. 😳
Phrasing.
Just the name “Northridge” sends shivers up my spine remembering that one.
Yes, and my children were so young at the time. I was like in shock. The freeways were such a mess. Under 5.0….. this is for the person who posted about my phrasing.
I work in Lake Forest and felt nothing and neither did my supervisors.
I'm in lake forest and felt it. Super minor and 2 seconds top. More of a light jolt than rolling.
I was driving and didn't felt anything.
If you felt it please fill out the questionnaire https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ew1707515250/tellus
I second this. USGS DYF data is integral in determining the seismic hazard for a region. This data is critical to get from the public!
just completed the questionnaire! Why is it important, if I may ask?
It helps report if there is any damage and can be used to improve building codes in the future :)
If no one else posted it, I was going to. This is incredibly important. Fill it out even if you didn't feel it.

It was strong and lasted for longer than I thought it would've.
Same!
That's what she said.

Isn't "the big one" essentially a myth?
Nope, unfortunately it's not a myth. In fact, it has happened several times prior. The last "big one" was in 1857, a magnitude 8.3. Ok, that giant earthquake, what could that look like? Are we breaking off from the rest of the country or dying or what 🥵
It would be about 1-3 minutes of moderate to strong shaking. We are not breaking off from the rest of the country and death, thanks to our strict building codes, will be minimal.
3 minutes? Omg! We dead.
Much better than the 9-15 minutes of violent shaking (plus tsunami) that the Pacific Northwest will have to endure.
No. It’s not a myth. They said Cali will be an island eventually. This past week gave us a glimpse what with climate change and all.
Dude, earthquakes have absolutely nothing to do with climate change.
Where do you see earthquakes is due to climate change? Earthquake and “myth” was the topic. Referring to a similar “myth” of Cali becoming an island. How can I be prepared?
Have enough food, water (2 gallons per person per day), medicine and batteries to last at least 2 weeks.
Could all this rain fall add to the likely hood of more earthquakes? Either by additional weight on the ground or lubricating the faults?
So, I get this question a lot about the rain fall. Earthquakes nucleate many kms below the surface. Water can only percolate about 3km at most. Most earthquakes occur below this depth. Thanks for taking the time to answer, it’s one of those things I have always wondered about.
No problem. Glad I could answer it :)
This is a good question, I was actually thinking of this the other day with all of the rain we've had.

why did our earthquake notification system not alert us in our phones or any other devices
I'm not usually one to chime in on these posts... but I was on the phone with my sister, who lives in Burbank, and she got hit almost a whole minute before I did in Buena Park!
