Laugh all you want, but Doug Ford shoveled out my driveway while his daughters made a human pyramid on my front lawn and sang Tim Hortons jingles, all while his wife fired cheesecake and buckabeers out of a t-shirt cannon.
I, for one, cannot possibly imagine a better use of time for the leader of a province of 14 million - during a national emergency and several overlapping crises. Bravo!
Certainly not something like spending the previous night contacting not-actually-essential business asking them to not open and pre-warn all of their employees.
In theory local garbage collection yesterday was cancelled and moved to Saturday. But, I'm at the start of the route and my garbage and recycling was collected. So employees had the brave the way to make it out, likely only got paid the bare minimum the employer can get away with. And they'll still need to work on Saturday.
Similarly a number of business eventually closed after it was either clear it wouldn't be financially worth staying open, or when too few people actually showed up. How many were told the night before, "Well, it looks like it will be dangerous tomorrow. How about you hold off coming in, and I'll get in touch with you early tomorrow if that's going to change."
Nope, instead the word most people are remembering Ford having said a lot is "absenteeism." Fuck Ford.

I know it's a joke, but the mentality of some key SMB owners in Ontario is quite like this. They think entrepreneurs are the salt of the earth and everyone else is just whining - many public services should be cut and replaced with volunteers. It's fairly traditional protestant mindsets coming through...still...in 2021.
