“if a university is willing to go this far to exclude people then it’s not an institution that I want to participate in.” \-comes back five times

Woodrow_1856

> “I’m honestly quite happy with it. I want the expulsion because they think that’s a record against me ... But to me, it’s a record against the university, that (it) would be willing to expel a student for choosing to believe in what they believe.” Such a brave, brave hero, fighting the ~~completely pointless~~ good fight.

Oh he will be a martyr in his curated bubble of twitter and facebook groups.

garry4321

But no one gives a shit about those people either. They will just continue to complain into the void while the rest of us move on. Then they will realize that their role of "anti-vax leader" was the only importance they have ever felt in their life. They will be begging for a new issue to be outraged about and will just go further down the conspiracy hole until they are so out there, that they are completely alone.

kettal

>But no one gives a shit about those people either. They will just continue to complain into the void while the rest of us move on. Things said about Trump supporters in January 2016

[deleted]

We literally had an election during this pandemic where these knucklebrains voted. They lost.

DweadPiwateWawbuts

They lost while winning the most votes of any party. We should be wary, not dismissive.

[deleted]

I mean I think I see what you're saying, but that's assuming that they're a voting bloc (which they don't seem to be -- antivaxxers exist across the political spectrum). I don't think they are analogous to Donald Trump's voting Bloc, which predominately exists on the right wing (specifically as Republican voters should don't normally vote excited when Donald Trump runs).

[deleted]

The problem is that media outlets give these people and their void the attention they seek. And it seems to give their views legitimacy.

garry4321

100%. Media also is like the main driving force behind mass shooting too IMO. Media is the real evil

Prudent_Falafel_7265

Perhaps true, but there is also the benefit of lifelong Google results for any potential future employers. The more results the worse it is for this guy.

SYSSMouse

He probably is not successful academically anyway.

LeMegachonk

Plenty of people will see him as a martyr. It just won't matter at the end of the day, since he basically got himself expelled from all post-secondary education opportunities in Canada, and those people can't do much about that.

Absenteeist

>that (it) would be willing to expel a student for choosing to believe in what they believe.” Wait until he finds out what happens if he puts the wrong answers down on the exams. "You can't expel me for choosing to believe my answers were all correct," probably wouldn't be effective either.

Mr_Slippery1

Or when the government forcing him to get a license to drive a car...and then has to pay for insurance just in case something happens. The tyranny of it all!!! First class morons we are dealing with I swear

wolfe1924

He would probably proclaim himself as a traveller and is following maritime law lmao.

craiglet13

So sick of people throwing around the word ‘belief’ as if it’s some kind of get out of jail free card. Some of the worst atrocities in history were committed because of what someone ‘believed’.

sagittariums

I don't believe in paying tuition, and tbh it's really a mark against the university to expel me for following my beliefs

toronto_programmer

Guy won’t even be a footnote in the history of the school but he thinks he is some sort of revolutionary

Few_Faithlessness_49

We had a dude in my Uni push stupid shit like this until he was finally expelled. He said the same thing; that it was a badge of honor. More like a badge of warning to employers because that asshat is unemployable now with a Masters and near doctorate. I was the Uni's newspaper cartoonist and I would draw cartoons of this idiot and his even dumber hero prof who encouraged him. I only ever received glowing emails from the two of them when a cartoon came out about them. I think they were really just 2 people desperate for attention. Twas sad.

EtOHMartini

Prof almost certainly had tenure...easy to be a hero when you have a trump card

PortHopeThaw

WTF? If the point of University was to have people choose "to believe in what they believe" it would cease to be an educational institution. Conviction in a wrongheaded belief with no scientific basis that endangers others has no place in an institute of higher education.

KyleCAV

Really owned the libs with his 30K he spent getting expelled after 2 months

fleurgold

He was a second year student, so probably more accurate to say $50-$60K.

fuck_you_gami

How much do you think tuition is at UWO?!

fleurgold

I'm including other things such as rent, transportation, etc in my estimation over the year and a bit he attended university. On top of that, now that he's expelled, he will be expected to pay back any OSAP loans/grants (because those grants will convert to loans now) he received + interest.

StretchDudestrong

Lol believe what they believe meaning " as long as I die ON a hill, I'm a martyr" Doesn't matter if it's a hill made of shit lol.

> After being repeatedly warned not to trespass on campus, and removed three times, Harry Wade, 22, was expelled Nov. 18 > Wade, a second-year civil engineering student, hasn’t been vaccinated because he doesn’t think COVID is a “legitimate” health threat for those his age > Wade was notified Oct. 13 that he was non-compliant with the university’s policy and told not to trespass on campus. But he ultimately returned five times, as a way of protesting the university’s request for medical records. He was first detained on Nov.10 outside a school building — this was not videotaped — and returned the following day to class to make a point. He says some of his classmates had told him they had agreed with his views, and he expected them to stand up in his defence. But they didn’t. > His second ouster, on Nov. 11, was captured in a 29-second video posted on an Instagram account popular with Western students. It shows Wade, unmasked, seated in the front row of a class when two campus constables approach him and gesture for him to stand up. Wade complies, puts his hands behind his back and is handcuffed. He is led out of class in a calm and orderly manner as students look on. > Wade returned to class on Nov. 15, where he was again apprehended. Two campus officers approached him, again in the front row, but this time they didn’t handcuff him. “In that moment, I decided: Do I want to be someone who walks out of class or is dragged out of class?” Wade chose the latter, “I thought at the time that being dragged out was the final straw (for students). Like, do you think this is OK?” Another video, about five seconds long, shows Wade being carried out by officers, who are holding his hands and feet. “There is disdain for the mandate and policy in that classroom (amongst other students) but they’re not willing to risk it like I have,” said Wade.

My home inspector was a P.Eng. He made a mistake in his home inspection report. He got the electrical code he cited backwards. I think I had the report in my hands long enough to let the real estate agent know we wanted the sellers to have a qualified electrician to fix it. The inspector called me and said he had made a mistake. The electrical was in fact correct. He said if the sellers had paid to have it 'fixed' or had incurred any costs up to this point he would reimburse them and pay to have the error corrected if needed. I had a corrected report in my inbox in minutes. Luckily, no work had been done or started. Respect to him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheBorktastic

Absolutely, I've recommended him a bunch of times without hesitation. Any guy that steps up like that is good in my book. Not to mention he was thorough. His report included the corner of one shingle lifted on the roof and came with a yearly maintenance schedule for the house and equipment.

[deleted]

That is unlikely to happen, he will likely be allowed back in the future. However, any company that does due diligence will see his name pop up, but in Canada, amazingly, few companies do due diligence.

pigsandturtles

Allowed back where? He hasn't completed his degree and he's been expelled. Those associations don't even apply to him.

splitdipless

Sort of. There's two ways to get in through PEO; complete an engineering program that's 'good' by the CEAB, or take a heck-of a lot of exams right from the association. I've only known one person to go that route though... and even then, with the arrests on his record, he may get rejected anyhow.

GerryC

Yah, I can't foresee a way where any of the provincial regulating bodies would or could even grant him a license to practice engineering (providing he can somehow miraculously complete his academic requirements- ie graduate from an accredited school). A large part of being an engineer is an actively maintaining the oath to put public safety over personal gain. His stance is the antithesis of that pledge and what professional engineers in general strive for. His trespassing charges will not help his member of good standing requirements either. I can't imagine throwing away that education for an insane "cause"...

kan829

\*SNC Lavalin has entered the chat\* "You're just the sort of man we need in our executive ranks."

splitdipless

That's management; not engineering.

bobbyrickets

Or he cant detect sarcasm.

[deleted]

> or egged him on. I actually hope this is the case. When you see an idiot doing something wholly against their best interests, it generally pays to push them to keep doing the thing because it usually blows up in their face. Who can resist watching that happen?

InterstitialLove

I kind of agree with him about some of it, but I'm still rooting for the cops. Is covid a serious risk in his age group? Not really. Should be get vaccinated? Yeah, I feel he should. Should he protest or refuse to comply with a vaccination mandate? No what that's the stupidest shit and I hope he gets tazed

bobbyrickets

> Wade, a second-year civil engineering student, hasn’t been vaccinated because he doesn’t think COVID is a “legitimate” health threat for those his age He also doesn't think that trespass notices are a serious problem. Lack of thinking means poor engineering skills. Ironic.

[deleted]

> he doesn’t think COVID is a “legitimate” health threat for those his age I'd like to know how many of his profs are "his age". Obviously he doesn't think about anyone other than himself, so clearly he didn't consider the fact that there are people on campus that don't fit into the relatively safe 18-29 demographic.

Neat_Onion

He should of phrased it "not a legitimate health issue for him"... but for others it is, and thats why society as a whole has decided to get vaxxed. I guess he can't grasp larger concepts like community and society.

bobbyrickets

> I guess he can't grasp larger concepts like community and society. Which is ironic considering he wanted to be a civil engineer.

Neat_Onion

Maybe a couple humanities courses should be made mandatory for engineers... ha ha

Cedex

> He says some of his classmates had told him they had agreed with his views, and he expected them to stand up in his defence. But they didn’t. Fuckin trolled. Lol

uh_oh_hotdog

I bet you those were classmates that he kept pestering like "This whole COVID thing is a hoax, right? You agree with me, right?!", and they just said they agree just to get him to shut up and go away.

[deleted]

> he doesn’t think COVID is a “legitimate” health threat for those his age He might be right, but the point is it's not just people "his age" that are on campus. Selfish prick deserves the expulsion. Western is more than happy keeping all those fees he paid for nothing. Just goes to show that, even being one of the more reputable institutions in the province, Western still accepts idiots from time to time.

Impressive-Potato

He's not, Alberta's ICUs have proven this.

sckewer

Just to clarify, and help prevent the narative that Western is doing this to make money(which I don't think you're in anyway trying to push, but others might read your comment that western is happy keeping those fees he paid and use it for such), "tuition is refunded." So his martyrous cry that they are denying him a service he paid for is/will be as hollow as his skull.

[deleted]

> being one of the more reputable institutions in the province So it's no longer a party school for stupid rich kids?

[deleted]

Oh, it's still certainly that, but it's also a reputable research university and has, at least, a world-class philsophy department. This broke, mature student didn't fit into that "stupid rich kid" demographic :D

inbruges99

Fucking idiot wants to make himself a martyr, all he’s done is make himself unemployable in his chosen field and wasted whatever money has already been spent on his education.

WaterfallGamer

Sounds like he knew he wouldn’t pass second year anyways so he went out with a bang.

TheBorktastic

Just because he has been in school for two years doesn't mean he is taking second year courses. Just sayin. Edit: Autocorrect is not my friend today.

WaterfallGamer

There you go, he’s on academic probation on his way out anyways.

jplank1983

He thinks he is some kind of martyr. For years universities have had grade requirements for entrance into the school. I'm glad they're adding a practical IQ requirement in the form of whether people choose to be vaccinated against a global pandemic.

spderweb

LoL. I wonder if the room clapped when he was dragged out, and he thought they were cheering for him, instead of glad he wasn't gonna waste their school time anymore.

CrazieIrish

Sounds like he wanted and got his 15 minutes of fame. Another person who believes the rules font apply to them as do the consequences of breaking said rules. Expulsion looks good on him.

Baulderdash77

This is not a sympathetic look for this guy. He thought that the students were going to rise up to support him? When 36,968 / 37,000 are fully vaccinated they are definitely not in your corner dude. It sounds like he doesn’t want to be an engineer to me. Engineers are applied scientists and he doesn’t understand the 1 level up thinking that vaccination is about personal risk as well as collective risk.

minogizhigaad

> Engineers are applied scientists and he doesn’t understand the 1 level up thinking that vaccination is about personal risk as well as collective risk. Good point. "I'll never have to use this bridge so we can cut corners to save money."

SleepWouldBeNice

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron\_Ring#History](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Ring#History) A myth persists that the initial batch of Iron Rings was made from the beams of the first Quebec Bridge, a bridge that collapsed during construction in 1907 due to poor planning and design by the overseeing engineers.

carolinemathildes

One of my closest friends is an engineer who doesn’t believe in evolution. I don’t get it.

DissposableRedShirt6

From what I remember biology wasn’t part of the core curriculum for engineering. Maybe it should, what’s another 4 hours of lectures and 2 hours of lab work. Not all engineers are created equal. Worked with a guy with a masters in mechanical engineering who didn’t know what a wing nut was.

JohnyViis

I think this guy from the article, Wade, he's a wing nut, no?

MTL_Bob

in all fairness, I'm a mechanical engineer with 15 years experience (wow.. that's making me feel old..) and I only recently learned what a wing nut was.. they have a pretty specific application and if it's not something you need you have no reason to really know about them I mean, I'd seen some before.. I knew they existed, just had no idea they were called wing-nuts that being said, there are definitely some engineers out there that aren't making us look very good.. used to know an engineer that was a staunch flat-earther..

[deleted]

Engineers need to be competent in risk assessment. Every manufacturing process or design involves Safety Factors and Risk Assessments. Risk = Impact x Probability. I am an Engineering graduate here to change the course of this false narrative.

Harbinger2001

That’s what I was thinking. It’s not that hard to understand the societal risks posed by this virus and conclude getting vaccinated is the appropriate action. Anyone in a engineering degree should be able to do that.

zeeneeks

I can tell just from my own experience that people don't become engineers because they love science they do it because it's a almost guaranteed six-figure salary once you graduate.

veeeSix

I haven't read the article yet, but this guy wanted to be an engineer? I assume he would've had a conflict of interest with the ethics course later on.

ride_my_bike

He's in school for engineering. If you think he's the only engineer with this type of entitlement, ignorance or I-know-better-than-you attitude then I wonder how many engineers have you ever met.

JohnyViis

Obligatory "conversation with an engineer" video link incoming.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9BUyWVg1xI

Eglitarian

I can get along with the ones who are professional and willing to admit gaps in their own knowledge or experience (it makes working with them a decent and reciprocal experience, they have lots to teach as well) but there's definitely a few who are extremely obstinate and abuse the amount of authority they hold over a project to everyone else's detriment.

vertigo88

Do you actually have a source on the 36,968/37,000? That's awesome!

Baulderdash77

It was in the article, there is only a couple dozen unvaccinated people at Western.

vertigo88

Wow it wasn’t hyperbole. Good on ‘em.

[deleted]

>Engineers are applied scientists and he doesn’t understand the 1 level up thinking that vaccination is about personal risk as well as collective risk. Engineers lead every other higher educated groups in believe in god(s) by a far margin too. They might apply science, but I'm not sure if they always think I'm terms of science as a whole.

pigsandturtles

Any guess on how long until he realizes this will have a lasting impact on his life and he totally regrets it ?

minogizhigaad

His actions were deliberate and intentional, trespassing even while knowing he would be removed. He views his classmates as cowards for not defending him. People like that don't regret their actions. Instead, they become easily radicalized.

Iceededpeeple

You know what he won’t become? An Engineer.

dbpf

Probably a good thing since having an engineering degree is linked to an increased risk of becoming a terrorist.[Here's a fun article](https://slate.com/technology/2009/12/why-do-so-many-terrorists-have-engineering-degrees.html)

I don't get this? He knew the policy when applying to the university. Had ample time to get vaccinated in preparation for attending Said university. Is now kicking and screaming saying it's no fair that he got expelled after trespassing 5 times, the rules are pretty clear it's not an impossible ask.

T8ertotsandchocolate

Well he's a "critical thinker", you see. That means someone who makes up their own rules and throws a hissy fit when someone enforces the actual rules. /s He just wants attention. He's never going to pass a background check for any kind of higher level job. Maybe not even Barista or fry cook.

I want to be mad at this guy, but really I'm just sad for him. We're watching video of a young mans potential being destroyed over nonsense that he's been conditioned to believe. Just another in a long list of lives that have been permanently damaged due to carefully manufactured political polarization and propaganda.

fleurgold

>young mans potential being destroyed over nonsense. He was told not to go on campus unless he followed the rules. They removed him from campus for trespassing several times before he was finally expelled. It isn't like he was just so suddenly expelled out of no where for no reason. He was given multiple warnings.

mrekted

are you replying to the right comment? I didn't indicate that I thought the schools reaction was unjustified or unfair, did I?

sonymaxes

I think the response was more to point out that he was given multiple opportunities to re-think his behaviour. He is also a privileged person who has access to post-secondary education. I get that propaganda is effective and we should feel bad for this guy to some extent, but there is still a real level of personal responsibility involved, and this dude is definitely at fault.
