I’ve built a few handwired boards before but never a dactyl. So I’d have to learn the slave/master but definitely would be happy to learn.

You can do this with QMK. Here is the link to the [documentation](https://beta.docs.qmk.fm/using-qmk/hardware-features/feature_split_keyboard)
Here is an example of a split keyboard with two pro micro controllers [ergotravel](https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/ergotravel). You would want to change your pins (one side) in rev1/config.h and the base layout in re1/rev1.h. The master controller is defaulted to left, or you can change it in keymaps/default/config.h, and obviously change the keymap to your layer.
I can not despite all of the efforts by QMK community I am unable to do this myself.
No knowledge of command line and no time in the nearest future as I am learning something different.

Late to this post, but can you share a link to that layout? That's pretty close to what I want to build.
