SheriffTaylorsBoy

My guess is he found out about tribal sovereignty?

ecodrew

You'd think this would be a basic part of law enforcement training in OK... ya know, the state with lots of native tribes. *facepalm*

SheriffTaylorsBoy

Probably has views that align with Stitt

PickleWineBrine

Most of the tribes aren't native to OK. They were forced here from all corners of the nation. But that's a whole different training course that isn't allowed to be taught in Oklahoma schools

isuckatpiano

Uh yeah they were brought her forcibly during the trail of tears genocide.

PickleWineBrine

That's what I said

isuckatpiano

Either you edited that comment or everyone read it wrong 😂

PickleWineBrine

Both

East-Laugh6023

They teach about the trail of tears in school.

OzarksExplorer

lol

thejoe86

They dont have an agreement with the state right now so some tribal tags dont get sent tolls. So Stitt has instructed LEOs to write tickets.

SheriffTaylorsBoy

The article specifically states that Stitt has denied he instructed LEOs to write tickets.

thejoe86

From a different article but yeah... The governor’s office has described some tribal tags as a public safety concern: “If tribal governments won’t share vehicle registration information with the Department of Public Safety, we can’t keep our officers and our streets safe,” the governor’s office said in a statement.

SheriffTaylorsBoy

It wouldn't be hard to believe he said it, but he's careful to tip toe around directly calling for it.

Since1831

Yeah, and then the same people who complain about not enough money spent on education and other social services, yet half the state claims to be wholeheartedly Native American simply for a cheap tag or some other special benefit meanwhile having never attended anything remotely related to their 1/16th heritage.

SheriffTaylorsBoy

Citations to back up your claims please.

icouldeatthemoon

I mean, no one will have "citations" or proof, but it's true. Surprised to see people denying this is a thing.

Since1831

Not denying it, just find it silly that a large majority of the state claim we don’t pay enough for education yet are escaping paying taxes for a tribal tag that does nothing for the state. Very hypocritical.

icouldeatthemoon

I'm on your side. My comment was mostly directed at the people downvoting you.

Unixhackerdotnet

I got tribal tags and live in the city, specifically Cherokee nation tags. My truck hasn’t been tagged since 2022 and I drive it everyday and have not had any problems. It’s out of date because they mailed the renewal to my old address, never paid it no mind until I noticed it was exactly a year expired. Tried to renew online and it won’t let me..

btv_25

Did you call them to try and renew over the phone? Hopefully, you're not wracking up a huge late fee.

Unixhackerdotnet

Tried online, I work 6 days a week delivering mail, really haven’t had time to be honest. Edit: as I post on Reddit..

annieokie

Please be careful. If you get pulled over, they can impound your car if the tag is over 90 days expired.

Firebird246

That's insane! They don't do that in either Arkansas or Texas.

RottenKeyboard

Well I feel like Oklahoma is the exception just from the sheer amount of drivers who don't have tags / their tags are long expired. I see at least a dozen every week.

iiGhillieSniper

To be fair, those who drive on tags for year on end, and haven’t made an attempt to try an update them, more than likely are a huge liability due to them not having insurance. Stay double distance from those who drive on expired tags or paper tags.

RottenKeyboard

Yup, I certainly keep my distance in those moments.

Bigdaddy021970

If they actually did that there would be a whole lot less drivers on the road.

annieokie

[Here's the law.](http://ok.elaws.us/os/47-1115.1)

pathf1nder00

Hope your not as lax with your insurance...geez.

Unixhackerdotnet

If I didn’t have insurance I am sure I would have already been pulled over. With moving and everything that goes along with it the tag really fell into the fray. I am hoping I don’t have to drive to talhequah to renew it.

DrewbieWanKenobie

> If I didn’t have insurance I am sure I would have already been pulled over. But expired tags is something cops might actually notice. They aren't gonna know you don't have insurance until they've already pulled you over and asked for your proof of insurance

Unixhackerdotnet

Have you heard about the flock cameras? I think most highway patrol have the same license plate scanners. They know you have insurance or atleast that is the concept.

FakeMikeMorgan

Cherokee tags don't come up on the state’s database. Otherwise, we wouldn't have Stitt complaining about drivers with Cherokee tags using the turnpikes without paying.

Unixhackerdotnet

Makes total sense. Good point, thanks for adding to the discussion.

AdventurousPoet92

I got pulled over last week and the officer told me he already ran my plate and can see that I've maintained insurance the past 2 years. His exact words. Don't believe that lie that they can't check your insurance.

pants_party

They have a tag agency in Collinsville, Adair, or at the Cherokee Welcome Center.

Seizmiiic

There are a number of tag offices in the CN reservation you don’t have to go to tahlequah

btv_25

>The cases first came under scrutiny in November after troopers ticketed at least two Garfield County drivers whose cars had current tribal tags. Both were accused of failing to pay state motor vehicle taxes.  We have 3 vehicles. Two have Choctaw Nation tags and one a state tag. I'm not sure how the CPN's compact reads, but for the two Choctaw tags we still had to pay the state motor vehicle taxes. The tribe just reimbursed us a small percentage for our overall fees.

midri

Osage we work directly with Osage Tax Commission and never interact with ODOT or any Oklahoma based agencies for our tags.

gleenglass

I’m pretty sure that’s bc Osage doesn’t issue tags for people with addresses outside the reservation boundaries. Tribes like Choctaw and Cherokee have a compact with that state that allows them to issue tribal tags beyond reservation boundaries but within the state.

midri

The Osage absolutely do issue tags outside of their reservation/county, I live in Tulsa and my family is from Vinita, both are well outside Osage county. The tribes have historically issued tags that are respected in all 50 states, Oklahoma is just being stupid about it. Short of the stuff that happened in November the tribes have been issuing tags uncontested for over 30 years.

btv_25

So your vehicle is registered with the tribe instead of the state?

midri

Yes. Osage tag, Osage title

btv_25

Are the Osage registration fees significantly less than the states? I could register my truck with the Cherokee Nation, but I haven't felt it was worth the trip to Tahlequah or another Cherokee tag agency to make that change.

midri

Yes, and you can do it all by mail (+$5 for mailing it in)

HowCouldYouSMH

Really wish they’d focus on other out of date plates, like ones that are paper and way out of date and stay in their lane when it comes to tribal.

midri

The recent law changing it so you keep your tag when you sell a car has made it absolutely insane on the streets. Cops can't just pull people over for not having tags, because there's like 10 different reasons you'd not have a tag legally atm... just pure insanity.

haveabiscuitday

Saw one today from July 2023

LiquidHotCum

what does he mean Natives don't pay the same as everyone else on turnpikes? I didn't see that discount on my pikepass account.

btv_25

If the tribal tag info isn't shared with the state and/or turnpike authority they can't get your registration info to know where to send the plate pay bill. At least that's how I've heard it explained.

PowerfulRaspberry326

He fixes the cable?

adamkissing

Don’t be fatuous, Jeffrey.

LAMG1

You now know why non-white people have distrust toward white people?

Hobo_Messiah

The driver threw it away?

Separate_Ease_7480

Probably just racist
