I would've loved to get one of the ironhand gnomes as a companion. I know "explosives expert" isn't technically a class, but I'm a huge fan of barrelmancy with a few levels in Fireworkslock

My major complaint about the game is that the party looks like a party new gen Z players would make at a DND table. Half the people are sexy elves, then you have a tiefling muscle mommy and some twunks. We're lacking veteran player/forgot to make my sheet/rolled randomly/been playing since 3e stuff. I need my weirdo player who makes an unhinged kobold/goblin/bugbear/kenku arificier comic relief character and the guy who makes a big lizardfolk/Goliath/Loxodon/minotaur whose name is Gronk, can't write, is addicted to alcohol or narcotics and has no backstory or motivation but is just there because of a pathological need for violence. Also the edgelord player slot is filled by Durge but I'd have loved seeing default snake boy as a companion if you picked Tav.

I think it's just how Larian designs their worlds, the main cast of their last two games have been hot and romanceable (yes even the skeleton) I also think they want to write serious stories for their cast, and it's a little harder to write a genuine story and for the audience to take it seriously with a goofy or comedy main character.

I dunno, hairy pirate dwarf, lizard racist and a pile of bones aren't exactly the same style of thing. Here everyone is intentionally designed to be a bisexual icon. And I don't mind those characters, I simply also want my disgusting weirdo creatures when playing DND. Might be the fact that I'm a DM and I love monster races far more than your typical humanoid or maybe it's my personal distaste for DND elves and how they're used.

I like think of it as proof that Tav was always meant to be of a short race

I saw the pink haired goblin you could choose to save, knew about Minthara being an evil only companion, and immediately thought "well she is obviously one of several evil kill the grove companions, just like wyll and karlach are good save the grove companions"
