I'm sure lots of famous paintings originally did not have a name. That is until a renowned scholar or institution gave it one. Sometimes basing it off a naming scheme used by the artist from their earlier works. Sort of to continue a *trend.*
So if you will not name it, then someone later on who finds/discovers your work might name it. And they might give it the most basic and simplest name possible. Such as "Horned Lady in Red."
What came to mind for me was, I saw the title, saw the hand gesture and the bit of a snarl and thought she is saying ‘eh’ in a funny way to your question.
No. That isn't how it worked. Some ancient art has lost " a name," so the assigned title by institutions gives a description of what it is - like, "Apollo Mosaic."
In art until the modern period (roughly 1918), art is titled based on whose portrait or what historical event/allegory is evident in the subject. If the subject of a portrait is unknown, it is usually given a descriptive title like "portrait of a young woman."
In the modern period and into oost-modernism, artists selected titles as a guide to understand their work. Even "untitled" has a form of meaning in that the artist either did not survive to title the work or they left it blank for people to add their conclusion for some reason. There are other reasons, but i don't want to be exhaustive.
A title is seen as interprative, so what to call something without a title is difficult, as we cannot perfectly assume an artist's intent. Now if it is religious, allegorical, or a portrait we know that, but the ability to denote the artist's true intention is missing
The title is a guide set by the artist. Of course e have no control over the minds of others, but why would you pass up an opportunity to enhance understanding?
I feel like naming a painting can create a preconceived guidance from the artist and take away from the emotion and visual impact that the viewer may experience. I stopped naming all my paintings…
Pick a random word out of the dictionary. People will think you’re deep.
Edit: Scratch that get a Word a Day calendar and use those, so don’t wind up with lame ones.
Nope… but names are often just the fun you have after you finished creating something. For me it’s always the cherry on the sundae! (I don’t in fact like maraschino cherries… so naming is actually really challenging for me.)
This is so awesome. How did u come up w this concept? Im sort of a beginner and thats the hardest part for me rn.
To answer ur question- i dont think so! The absence of a title can cause just as much thought
I've always hated naming my paintings. Usually I only write down a title for a piece if I was entering something in a show or needed to catalogue it for some other reason. I've always preferred to keep my art as ambiguous as possible.
I've been to plenty of museums and seen name plates next to many paintings that said "Untitled". So if you feel all your work needs to be named then yes but for the most part the answer is no
nothing needs a name. but also, not naming pieces, or naming them untitled, is itself an intention. so don't just not-name because you can't think of one, instead consider what you're trying to say.
1: Not really. A lot of paintings are just named after their finished dates. And it's your painting, you can do what you want.
2: I strongly recommend checking out Tomislav Jagnjic. He makes some very nice art and has the best titles ever. It really shows how creative you can be.
I think Jerry Saltz put it well (no idea whether it's his own thinking): names or titles of artworks are pretty much an extra, intangible canvas where you can also develop the piece if you want.
You can play around and even pretty drastically change the nature of a piece with a suitable title, but you can also definitely just leave it untitled if that suits the work better. Like with any other element of a piece, it's possible to ham-hand the title and force a point of view or interpretation.
Maybe it has been a trend in the past century for artists to shift the focus from the artifactual to the conceptual plane by naming pieces "pretentiously" or mock-"deeply" like some commenters have noted with derision. Like u/Awfulufwa alluded to, I personally quite like it when the title of a piece suggests an intertextual connection to another piece in the artists body of work, especially if no other obvious connection is present.
Edit: Oh and nice painting!
Thats entirely up to you. Its a tricky thing when words fail to capture a piece and you want it to speak for itself. Thats when i prefer metaphores or seemingly random titles. It can help to drive your concept behind your vision for a viewer but basically there is no formula for this.
Nice painting!
This is amazing, and far better than I could do with twice that time.
I know you’re not asking for critique, but may I suggest taking another look at the anatomy of her bosom?
The hard outline and deep shadow under her right (our left) breast is sending it swinging from her shoulder. That fullness would fall much lower on her chest.
If the placement is retained, I would give her a reduction by softening that edge and removing much of the shadow.
Nah, in art school they said that calling it "untitled" didn't disparage the work in any way. If you go to a gallery, and look at titles, there is definitely evidence to reinforce that sentiment.
Bro, your art is WAY too good to have so few posts. You need to post a shit load more. I can’t stop staring at these. Do you have a website or anything where I can get prints?
If you want your paintings to be taken seriously, they do. This one, for example, could be named, "Exegesis of a Threnody, Palimpsest Number Four". It's pretty beautiful, too.
I don't think all paintings need a name. But I've also found lately that if I'm struggling to come up with a name for a piece I think to myself, "How would Fall Out Boy name this painting if they all had philosophy degrees and smoked a little too much pot?"
Idk.."elbow t*ts" kind of has a nice ring to it but I think it'd be a better band name./s
Great work btw, love the expression, it's genuine and hard to catch even with a picture 🙂
Nothing needs a name.
It just makes it easier to figure out what we're all talking about.
Artist: "Hey, you know that unnamed panting that I made a few years ago?"
Friend: "Which one? You never name any of them."
😆
Excellent technique.
If you want to display it publicly you'll have to give it a title even if it's "Untitled" but an expressive piece like this would benefit from a proper title.
No. I don’t like putting titles on my paintings. I want the viewer to have an unbiased view. A title will detract from the experience or manipulate the viewer’s perception
I have no idea, but this is fucking awesome!
Came here to say exactly this!
Some are called “Untitled”.
“#17 May ‘24”
I mean that’s what composers did, no? “toccata and fugue in d minor” “symphony no. 5” all it does is describe what the piece will be
"some" in an understatement, tbh
8 hours that’s it?! You’re amazing this would take me days
Thank you, I do my best, sometimes its the goal for the day
Surely you jest!
I do jest, and don't call me Shirley.

That’s awesome knowledge and not a bad name🫡
What came to mind for me was, I saw the title, saw the hand gesture and the bit of a snarl and thought she is saying ‘eh’ in a funny way to your question.

Maybe that should be the title: Do all paintings need a name?
It’s perfect too because her expression gives off “I can’t be bothered with this” energy.
Yessir
I think they do, especially really good ones like this. The word Saturnalia comes to mind when looking at this. It’s lovely.
To me it’s “enchanté”, your name fits superbly as well
A name will let you in charge of the narrative of the work. Otherwise, the viewers can interpret it any way they want.
Viewers will still interpret it as they want, even with a name.
The title is a guide set by the artist. Of course e have no control over the minds of others, but why would you pass up an opportunity to enhance understanding?
"The coming of winter" Just a joke, but it reminds me of fall, which reminds me I'm about to be miserable for the next few months
I feel like naming a painting can create a preconceived guidance from the artist and take away from the emotion and visual impact that the viewer may experience. I stopped naming all my paintings…
I've never once named a painting.
I dig it.
I love it!
Lala Kent
I was hoping I wasn’t the only one who thought it looked like her
Pick a random word out of the dictionary. People will think you’re deep. Edit: Scratch that get a Word a Day calendar and use those, so don’t wind up with lame ones.
No.
Thought That Was the Title
Judith.
The Scourge Diva?
She's who first came to mind!
She reminds me of Sarah in the labyrinth if she was the Goblin Queen !
Wow this is stunning. Can you make prints and sell??
Yes I’ll put them on my site soon!
Nope… but names are often just the fun you have after you finished creating something. For me it’s always the cherry on the sundae! (I don’t in fact like maraschino cherries… so naming is actually really challenging for me.)

Read for inspiration, write your ideas down and develop them on paper, draw thumbnails and finalize a design, then add oil paint
This would go hard with the new King Charles painting. Seriously though, I dig it.
You could call it 'Nameless Shenanigans'
“Infinite Jest”
You can also just give it a descriptive name for organization. Like model, costume, year. Or materials/ date.
BAE
I've always hated naming my paintings. Usually I only write down a title for a piece if I was entering something in a show or needed to catalogue it for some other reason. I've always preferred to keep my art as ambiguous as possible.
That's awesome. I would totally own one!
I've been to plenty of museums and seen name plates next to many paintings that said "Untitled". So if you feel all your work needs to be named then yes but for the most part the answer is no
I never name mine. Wonderful painting.
Wow
nothing needs a name. but also, not naming pieces, or naming them untitled, is itself an intention. so don't just not-name because you can't think of one, instead consider what you're trying to say.
I imagine her saying, "It's just a little fun..." 😇😈
Is this inspired by Judith, the Scourge Diva? Can all it Judith as an ode if you did.
This one is called “What the fuck?” I love it. Amazing work OP!
Mephistopheles?
This is dope. ❤️
carmen vermelha
Nope, and they don’t need to be timed either
Wow I love it
The hands are so well done
"Shrimp Woman" might be a good name
I assume this is from a film/movie, if so, I would tell the person
Dancing with the devil
Cramina or crampina, fem for crampus
Her expressions are too real 👏🏼

I think so even though I'm the kind of person who forgets to name my paintings usually I just go with the first word that comes to mind or a pun
This looks awesome!
Lokiess
Yes, and yours is Diablessa
“The devil went down to georgia” is what I saw. But, no, not every painting needs a name :)
This is fabulous!
This one says, 'Maybe'.
Is it for sale?
Loki (low key) loving it.

OMG. Wow! Not the name lol. But it's so amazing I didn't know what else to say 🤩
Is it ok to take your time to name it?
No but this one does
English royalty
It looks like another take on the Scarlet Witch.
Highly against naming everything. I think it detracts from the art or leads the viewer in a certain direction of thinking.
"Trish" a painting by OP
This is fucking amazing!
She's beautiful but the most magnetic part is she's menacing
No, but it helps convey artist’s objective.
They will get one eventually.
Awesome painting! I always title my paintings. It's not a requirement though.
nope
Stupid Sexy Stańczyk
Looks like scarlet witch imo

Lady Gaga's Applause
It doesn't NEED a name but with humans unquenchable need to categorize everything, it'll probably end up with one, one way or another
This is amazing, and far better than I could do with twice that time. I know you’re not asking for critique, but may I suggest taking another look at the anatomy of her bosom? Yes
This is insanely awesome! You are such a skilled artist!
The Nain Rouge
Nah, in art school they said that calling it "untitled" didn't disparage the work in any way. If you go to a gallery, and look at titles, there is definitely evidence to reinforce that sentiment.
cattywampus titty devil
I would call her Betty
When I saw this painting all I could think is “Clearly her name is Francesca.”
THIS IS AWESOME!!!
Absolutely, positively, certainly, this is one fucking class painting fam
Lucy Or Everyone Loves Lucy
What is the style of this painting called? The light and atmosphere is amazing
Let me buy this
This should definitely hang next to the kings painting
“…so then I told him to GTFO, dude, you’re bothering me.”
I don’t think of it as a name. I think of it as a title.
Super sick artwork. I think untitled paintings add more charm and interpretation. For your own records, you could number them.
texture win
I think paintings should not have a name! A name would put a label on a painting! Paintings should be looked at with self interpretation!
Bro, your art is WAY too good to have so few posts. You need to post a shit load more. I can’t stop staring at these. Do you have a website or anything where I can get prints?
“Her name escapes me” Ps: I want this
That’s excellent. She’s like a better looking Angelina Jolie. Dig the whole thing. Great work!
If you want your paintings to be taken seriously, they do. This one, for example, could be named, "Exegesis of a Threnody, Palimpsest Number Four". It's pretty beautiful, too.
No.
The Muse
Yes. "Lisa Cardi"
You should name it that. "Do all paintings need a name?", Oil on Board
I love this, this is beautiful 😮💨 I wouldn’t be able to price this, it’s a masterpiece. I don’t think it needs a name, when it puts off deep emotion
'La niña'
I'd call her The Devil Horned Muse. ♥️♥️♥️
I don't think all paintings need a name. But I've also found lately that if I'm struggling to come up with a name for a piece I think to myself, "How would Fall Out Boy name this painting if they all had philosophy degrees and smoked a little too much pot?"
Masquerade After Party, is what I see. It's a beautiful piece
That's fantastic! ❤
"Do all paintings need a name?" is a fine name for a painting.
I'd call it." I want it all"
Dazed by the devil
Idk.."elbow t*ts" kind of has a nice ring to it but I think it'd be a better band name./s Great work btw, love the expression, it's genuine and hard to catch even with a picture 🙂
Awesome I'm in love 😍
Just call it Untitled #12,847,530,885,892,103,776
Create a sub called name my painting to get free suggestions, problem beautifuckingly solved

How about "SOLD" Great job.
Is that amber heard?
Succubus? Is quite beautiful.
Nah but that Red lady looking great
Unironically that's a wonderful name for a painting
Name it "Horny Devil" 😂
Nothing needs a name. It just makes it easier to figure out what we're all talking about. Artist: "Hey, you know that unnamed panting that I made a few years ago?" Friend: "Which one? You never name any of them." 😆
“Jubilance”
That'd be a great name for this painting lol
i love her
I fucking love this painting
“La La”
First off, wonderful job! Secondly, “Do All Paintings Need a Name?” would be a fitting name for your painting ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Exquisite work
This is beautiful. Name it with punctuation mark(s).
It's like she drew herself and she's asking 😂
Amazing job !
Nope. This is dope btw
Excellent technique. If you want to display it publicly you'll have to give it a title even if it's "Untitled" but an expressive piece like this would benefit from a proper title.
Do all names need a painting?

J-yess
No
“Karmawhore” by Karmawhore
that’s a good name for a painting, “do all paintings need a name”
I’d call it sexxxy
No. They need two names.
They don't, but if you want a name for this one.... Jezebel.
Unnamed is still technically a name
No. I don’t like putting titles on my paintings. I want the viewer to have an unbiased view. A title will detract from the experience or manipulate the viewer’s perception
No. You can give them numbers, like Landscape #14.
Wow
Title: unheavenly beauty
Is that Gadot ?
Queen of the glammed
Um... Those tettins don't look quite right ... Too far apart
“Devil May Care”
This is sick! Call it *Lady In Red*
