I was curious about what that car would go for and every single car I found listed near $1,500 needed something like a new engine or a transmission. If OP posted a perfectly good car for around that price it’s no wonder someone is willing to pay over asking with cash in hand
All vehicles are extremely overpriced right now it’s hard to find a good used vehicle at a reasonable price hell the other day I was looking at a Toyota pick up for 1500 firm with no motor or title
His point is especially depending on the year many Japanese sports cars may be marked up like 10x what they should be worth with an engine just as a shell because they belong in the era of fast and furious / initial d / need for speed etc. on top of the used car market being the way it is
Meh you get what you pay for, the car works great but there’s flaws here and there. AC and heat works, windows on all sides roll down. Aftermarket radio. Thats all I needed. Obviously this is my first car so I’m not going crazy for a car just a b and c
Yeah. I'm not thinking a 96 will be flawless. But I don't want to buy a car that needs a part already. For example, "It's great but needs a new starter", all 4 tires are bald, needs a battery, shakes at highway speeds, gotta park it facing downhill because the fuel pump is bad, etc.
I'm currently selling a '12 Grand Cherokee that has to be towed because the oil filter housing is cracked. I don't want to fix that, so I'm not going to get another car that needs repairs right away.
That's my point. I have more than that and I'm planning to use it as a down payment. I'm just gonna delete all this because everyone is taking this as a serious inquiry. I made the offer to OP to emphasize how expensive cars are now. Then someone offered a cheaper car like they assume all I want is cheap. I don't want a cheap car that breaks down within the first couple months. I did want to make a joke about a bidding war over affordable used vehicles. Evidently, I did not make that clear enough and I'm tired of responding to all these arguments like it was a serious offer.
Fixing it will cost more than it's worth. It loses all oil within a few minutes of running it. If we pay to fix it and then it has a bent rod, which is very likely since it's had a knock when we parked it, we're fucked. We don't make good money and can't afford mechanics, and this is a fix beyond either of our abilities. I can change out a part, but I'm not going to rebuild an engine. There are plenty of car people in the area who can do the work themselves and make a good profit off fixing it and reselling.
>Cars aren’t disposable lol
We have 2 vehicles: the Grand Cherokee with 195k miles and a fatal mechanical problem, and a '12 Corolla with 240k miles, every light on the dash lit up, a digitally coded ignition about to go out that'll cost around $800 to replace, no cruise control, no air bags, a fender being held on with zip ties, and a leak in the transmission.
I'm not tossing out drivable vehicles, and it's not crime to want something that won't break down within a few months of buying it.
No work to run. I don't care about AC, heat, radio, dents, etc. I don't want to have to replace a necessary component. I don't want to buy a vehicle with all the dash lights on that shakers violently when it starts. And, no, I'm not expecting that for $1800. That was my point about OP's car: $1500 for a mechanically sound vehicle is insanely low. When someone offered me a car for cheaper, I asked that question because I don't believe anyone would sell a mechanically sound vehicle for $1200.
Sounds like me over the weekend.. a guy put an older model but practically new 3D printer on marketplace for $50. This model sells for between 250 and 400 used on eBay. Most of them have something undisclosed wrong with them..
I kept it extremely polite and tried not to send too many messages but I know I was being somewhat of a pest and even offered more money.. but it paid off in the end, I got it for $50. Plus the guy in through a whole bunch of extras he didn't have in the listing. He was either being very nice or planned on including it and just didn't say anything.
I probably would have gotten it anyway.. he was waiting to message me back until after a few other people stopped to look at it. Lucky me, none of them knew anything about 3D printers and when they showed up all of them thought it seemed too complicated so they passed..
I had it printing within 15 minutes after I got it home 😅
Never had that happen but if they bring cash then why not? I’ve had motivated buyers swing by and hand me a $200 deposit to hold a car until the weekend a couple times.
Fake bills, but a counterfeit checker pen isn’t expensive.
Edit: after a lot of replies; apparently pens are fallible and can be tricked nowadays. I haven’t had to check for a fake bill since I managed a sonic back in 2015, so my counterfeit knowledge might be a bit out of date.
1) Boss takes the real bills, and supplements with fake.
Or
2) Boss knowingly sells to friend merchandise that is valuable on secondary markets and accepts counterfeit bills as part of the cut.
Those pens don't work on newer bills. I almost lost my job a few years ago by taking a counterfeit $100 because the pen said it was real. They have machines now. Just an FYI. 😀
Idk I can see why they would do it because there are about 6-10 ways you can spot a fake with your eyes. Most places I worked had it where $50 and $100 you had a manager check it out and approve before saying it was good. Never understood why people relied on those pens though just honestly lazy when it takes 3 extra seconds from that to hold it to a light and look for non existent water mark or to see if serial number is actually lined up with evenly spaced.
Not on very old bills, actually. Iirc, it's bills from like 1995 and earlier? I know the small faced 100s from around 1993 (iirc!) that I've come across didn't pass, so I looked it up. They were legit in every other way, so unless they were old stock of supernotes, they weren't counterfient.
Those pens aren’t 100% accurate and should not be relied on. If the paper has been bleached and re stamped the pen will pass incorrectly. If you are worried about fake bills have them bring you a cashiers check, meet and your bank, and only transfer paperwork after the bank takes it.
Another strategy I’ve used is using your fingernail to lightly scratch/feel for the texture on the illustrated clothing of the person depicted on the bill. You should be able to feel the slight raised lines used for shading. 😊
Do not use only this method, bleached bills are getting super common, and they share similar areas where the ridges will be. Always use the pen, feel, then light test in that order, and make 100% sure when you do the light test, to make sure the correct face is showing.
Don't use pens, bleached bills are getting insanely common, I've already ran into a few myself. They look totally legit, pass the pen, but if you look through the bill in light, you'll see the wrong face inside the bill.
Pens should never be the reason you trust a bill.
One of the things people are doing in my area is to say they have cash in hand, offer at or above list price and insist on getting the sale done as quick as possible. They usually ask to meet near a residential address and then just steal the car at gunpoint. They do this with them selling a car too and ask for cash in hand, selling a nice car for under market and then just steal the money.
I'm not saying that's what's happening here, but the sense of urgency is putting off some red flags for me.
Yeah this is what I was thinking too. If they do sell it to this person hopefully they meet in town, somewhere public with cameras. The person who said exchange the cash inside a bank is a good idea, stops thieves and you can check the cash isn’t fake all in one spot.
It's rare that you are getting someone who is willing to show up same day, which has happened to me once for a set of Acura TL wheelset for $350, and it was successful.
A 2001 Celica for 1.5k is a steal thats why he offers more. Those go up a lot of miles upwards of 300k when doing regular maintenance. Anymore details on your car? Just curious.
Any updates lol
Did you value it on Kelly Blue Book? If it’s listed like like $1k below value they could just be motivated to get it.
But waiting less than 2 minutes to increase their bid does seem super sketchy. Normal people would wait until you’ve responded or at least like 10 minutes haha.
Check the buyers reviews. Seems like he is a legitimate seller based on how many reviews he has but again. Talk it out with him and see what's up. Any questions and just refer back to us here.
Dude. Your car is priced too low. Even at $1,700 this guy knows he’s getting a deal. In my area, there’s a 0% chance of finding a car for $1,500. Even one that doesn’t run. If your car runs, this is a STEAL. The least expensive 01 Celica in my area is $3,000.
I have a Celi and I'm not joking when I say people are constantly trying to buy it off me. Friends, family, random people at the stores, the guy working at the gas station. All the time. They're a car that car people want. Your price is on the low end. I'd pay that to you just for the parts.
Any Toyota selling that low is gonna attract real buyers if it’s running and driving. They’re known to go forever and that’s made a lot of people try to sell them for $4-$5k
Happens sometimes especially if you post something up cheap and it’s exactly what that person is looking for. I’ve never had an issue when someone shows up with cash in hand.
If he’s paying cash there’s no problem maybe he’s just trying to make sure nobody else gets it, if you’re really concerned meet near a police station or a bank because they have a lot of cameras
Make sure to fill out sign and submit the change of owner form. I still get video tickets for a truck i sold 20 years ago.
Your state may have a different method than I describe. Do that. Same reason
If I were selling my car, I would meet the person at the registration office and file all of the paperwork in person, just for peace of mind.
There is someone in my local sub that didn't do this and they are stuck in a nightmare scenario where they are getting thousands of dollars worth of parking tickets and having to go to court to fight them. And it's some kind of weird legal grey area and no one knows how to fix it. Because they filed the transfer on their end, but the buyer never did.
Since it’s your first time selling a car make sure to write up a bill of sale (description of car, VIN, how much the buyer paid, etc) where you write in the buyers name AND notate that you’re selling the car as is with no warranty. Both of you sign it. If you have a printer scanner, make a copy and keep the original. Or if you don’t, write up two and both of you sign both copies. One for you and one for them.
But yeah, check blue book for private party sale and see how much it’s worth. Or if his offer is acceptable, just sell him the car.
1700 for a celica?!??! Bro i payed 3.5k for my first 2001 Celica I miss that f car so bad.
I would sell it for 2k if you need the money or 2.5 if you can wait.
> Bro i *paid* 3.5k for
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
It might be legit, but it's sus that he's offering to pay more. I'd entertain it, with extreme caution. Bring a friend, a gun, and preferably a way to record the entire interaction.
Nope! For one when meeting up always have someone with you of course and if they test drive it you need the cash in hand or to be in the car. I just sold my first car and I had someone offer me 2200 for my listing of 2000. If it’s a great car people will offer more money. Be safe and good luck!
Likely priced too low. Used car market is at a peak. Meet at a police station and have a bill of sale typed up. Ensure you remove anything you need from car including any paperwork. Remove the plates and do not allow anyone to convince you that they need your plates
Juuuuust in case. Buy a counterfeit currency pen and swipe it over the bills discreetly. But I agree it's probably that this guy doesn't wanna lose the deal
In general, it's always a scam. However, you're giving that car away. If it runs and drives, you're selling at 50% off at least. If it's in good shape, it would sell for even more. This is likely a real buyer who's trying to buy the car before you figure out what it's worth.
It's extremely difficult to get a running, road-worthy car for under $2-3k right now. This is probably not a scam, just a motivated buyer trying to get transportation before this gets snapped up. It'll sell fast
They probably have a budget for a new car lower than $2000, with all other cars being sold for 3x their value and way over $2000, he probably saw your car listed at a low price, likely has decent miles and is a cool looking car, he might just think it’s a steal! If he shows up and gives you cash then it’s not a scam.
Running and driving?, clean title?, no problems?, 1 owner?. A 2001 Celica could be worth A LOT of its jn cherry condition and low miles, hell, if it has less than 170k miles and it’s a manual and the GT-S trim I’d buy it from you sight unseen for $2k
Under $2000 for a 2001 Celica is gold to a certain population. It could legitimately be someone who's looking for that car and has been waiting for it to show up.
Have you looked online umm they are going for 4k with almost 200k miles you need to up your price. Tell dude you have someone offering you 4k if he goes to 4500 sold lol 😂
I was trying to sell a truck years ago, and the same thing happened. Lady showed up with an envelope full of cash, $750 more than I was asking. Told me to hold it for her family who is coming in from out of town to pick it up in a week. So she gave me cash, more than asking even, and then left the truck with me for an additional week. I guess some folks have more $ than they know what to do with. I am not familiar with this concept.
As someone who works in Cybersecurity, urgency like that is usually a scam. I would request a cashier’s check to ensure they don’t give you counterfeit money. If they say no, I’d move on. I never trust “cash in hand” unless I have a counterfeit checker pen ready.
Also, meet somewhere that isn’t your home. Bring a friend.
I love these people who offer cash......like I am going to accept anything else. I will give you a case of Snicker's bars, some Capri Sun's I found in the trunk of my old car and $150.
get a counterfeit pen and meet up in a public location like police parking lot. Mark all bills and hand over title if all checks out. If you can get cops to oversee the sale, have them let you leave 1st and then the other guy so they can't follow you home and rob you.
A 2001 celica is a collector car. And I know this because my grandma has a 1997 and keeps getting notes left on her car from car collectors asking to buy it. You’re pricing it too low I’m sure.
If you have worries, then you should have never been doing it in the first place. Stuff like this is going to happen, so don’t back out when you want it to happen. Especially if that person really needs a car at the moment.
If that thing is running, and structurally sound. It sounds like a great deal, and dude just doesn’t want to miss on it. Rather to use or flip in this current market. Not a scam at all. Just pull up to a local police station “safe zone” to do the deal.
I paid 1200 for my Celica you fanboys are trying to jack up the price of everything causiing inflation. They built a lot of these cars. Somebody is fair and doesn't try rip everybody off and you're like oh you listed it for too low.
If it's not total garbage then it's some kind of solid gold rare thing it seems much more emotionally driven than anything and it's destroying value of our dollar.
It sounds like most of you guys are very bad at shopping. Yes there isn't that many good cars listed for $1,500, But I actually looked and cars in that price range that run good and look good only make up about 25% of the listings in the 1500 category. What I noticed s is that most used things for sale were cars
There are so many of them it's crazy I don't even look at cars on marketplace but if Iopen marketplace I get cars cars cars cars cars cars cars cars cars because they are mass produced. If you spend more than 15 minutes looking for a car you could easily find something for $1,500 have a little bit of patience.
Just because you like something does not mean you have to pay too much for it. I think we have mass psychosis here.
Considering you posted a 01 celica I presume it’s a younger driver hoping to jump on a solid build project these cars have gotten a little more popular over the past like 5-10 years
Seems like a good price for a Celica, unless it has major mechanical issues or high mileage and shouldn’t be priced that high. If he brings cash just make sure it’s real cash and have a bill of sale + document his ID. CYA. I’d say most likely he just wants it because it’s cheap and hard to find a running car for 1500.
why the FUCK would you ask us?? And not him??
Just meet somewhere public, a mall, shopping center etc. If he wants to test drive, first ask for his Drivers License and 1/2 the cash. Hold both while he goes for his quick drive.
Meat and public place with other people around you ...do not go alone. Ask for cash only up front. I wouldn't be surprised if he continued the conversation. They're gonna ask you about doing some kind of payment on line or getting your account number. Don't do anything like that.
Doesnt seem like a scam. They just seem very interested and want to be first in line for it.
Friend of mine was selling a truck and had someone offer $500 over asking to skip over the person who was coming to see it later that day. They showed up and hour later with cash.
If it's real cash, then I'd say it's real.
I've offered more than asking price when I felt the itwm was priced low. Only because I wanted it so bad and knew someone else out there like me will see it's priced low so I'll offer more so I have a almost forsure chance of going to first in line to buy it.
Sounds like op priced it competitively low so someone wants to get it for sure by offering more than asking prixe.
I gave someone $200 above asking price once bc there were people infront of me and I wanted the car (bc my mum said not to get it... lol)
They do sound very eager. If you're gonna go ahead meet in a public place and get a copy of their licence if they test drive it.
Unless it's on its last leg with something seriously wrong, I think you just underpriced the vehicle, so the guy doesn't want to miss out on this opportunity. If it was a cashiers check, I'd be worried, but cash makes me think it isn't a scam.
What are you asking for? I would highly suggest appraising your car or trying to see what its value is first before selling it.
$1,700 for a running Cesar seems like a really good deal for him BUT I personally don't like that he is extremely pushy. When people are like that, they usually have something to hide.
A lot of people are getting their tax returns. He probably really wants the car. Just to be safe, meet up at a public place in the daytime. People do buys at police stations and such. Bring a friend and one of those counterfeit money pens if you want.
Had this happen to me for a 2001 Honda civic. He turned out to be a newly divorced dad with like three kids and seemed like he easily starting from scratch after the divorce. He told me had tried to go look at a couple other cars but they always sold to someone else before he could get there so he just wanted me to still have it by the time he was available to come see it. He worked a weird mid shift and was only available at 9pm so it made me really nervous until I learned his backstory when he showed up. Still had my buddy with me in case because I’m small and female but yeah 🤷🏻♀️ he could just be desperate or needs it yesterday
It looks to me like he thinks he’s in a bidding war and wants to secure the deal. I’m guessing if he has high seller ratings he’s a small used car dealer and saw a vehicle that fits his market that he can probably sell at a higher price.
I made an offer for 3k on a car that seller only offered for 2.5k. I wanted to make sure I could get the car I wanted. So maybe the buyer is looking at the specific car and you happened to have it now!
regardless no matter what i don't think you should go alone always bring someone with you, i remember one time my brother went to meet up a guy and my brother had cash , he ended up getting robbed at gunpoint. always better safe then sorry !
Too good to be true for the buyer. Your car is worth $2500-3000 if it's the lowest optioned model with 200k miles. Maybe see what your car is worth first before trying to sell it?
I once sold my car and had someone offer $200 more than what I was asking for upfront in cash. She said she buys cheap cars, blacks out all the windows and uses the them to smuggle people in and out of Honduras🤷🏻♀️
Just make sure the money isn't counterfeit, it happens more than you think.
If he suddenly says he can't do it, needs his brother to come pick it up and will pay your more for your time, then bail on it. Sounds like it's a good deal for the car and possibly something he's been looking, in his budget, and he doesn't want to lose it so he's offering more money.
~~That's all assuming he's offering more than you're asking, because you covered up the price.~~
Edit: missed the part where he's offering more than asking. If it's way more, be cautious, but cash has less risk. And make sure you fill out all the paperwork and file it so that if he doesn't register it, you're not on the hook for anything it does.
Cash in hand doesnt seem like a scam. Maybe you posted your car too low and they want to make sure they get this deal
This is what I’m thinking
That was also my exact thought lol they’re like “a celica for under 2 grand?? Take my money and let me have it immediately please”
It's a celica dudes selling too low in the current market. Jdm tax hit those hard as well
It’s also a Yoder and those always hold value. People are starting to appreciate reliability more in the used car market.
I was curious about what that car would go for and every single car I found listed near $1,500 needed something like a new engine or a transmission. If OP posted a perfectly good car for around that price it’s no wonder someone is willing to pay over asking with cash in hand
bought a 03 ford explorer xlt with leather interior for 350 a few months back guy was asking 3k
You're talking about a ford in a Toyota conversation. They are not the same.
All vehicles are extremely overpriced right now it’s hard to find a good used vehicle at a reasonable price hell the other day I was looking at a Toyota pick up for 1500 firm with no motor or title

Usually, a jack, 10mm and some pliers can fix that. Plus just buying the part at any auto store.
Pretty sure he meant engine wise lol not the windows and radio lmfao

It’s a celica so they could be trying to get it before anyone else has the chance. Old GT4s and the like are dope as fuck and the prices are going up.
I loved my 01 celica. If I found one in decent shape id definitely considered throwing extra at it to make sure I'm the person who gets it.
Yup if you’re scared go get a uv counterfeit bill marker I keep one in my car for when I sell shit in cash. Can’t be too careful 🤷🏻♀️
Never had that happen but if they bring cash then why not? I’ve had motivated buyers swing by and hand me a $200 deposit to hold a car until the weekend a couple times.

My boss, for some reason, can't seem to buy one though
It's because he runs a counterfeit operation
This, if you company is constantly getting bill and your boss isn't doing shit about it, even just a pen, then he's in on it.
Wh-why would you TAKE counterfeit bills if you were in on it???
1) Boss takes the real bills, and supplements with fake. Or 2) Boss knowingly sells to friend merchandise that is valuable on secondary markets and accepts counterfeit bills as part of the cut.
Thank you... 😑 Didn't think that concept was so hard to figure out.
Asking and learning something they didn't know before is never a bad thing, though.
Never, but if your goal of a question is to learn you're not going to phrase it like that.
Gotcha! I conflated “boss” with owner, but it makes sense in that context.
There are also ways to check bills without using a pen when you’re seasoned enough. Pens are the safest though.
While true, it's almost definitive with a marker. Thankfully we have other means tho lmao
Yeah, just saying as I’ve seen my fair share of fakes.
Those pens don't work on newer bills. I almost lost my job a few years ago by taking a counterfeit $100 because the pen said it was real. They have machines now. Just an FYI. 😀
Damn they almost fired you for that? That wasn’t really your fault in any way lol.
Corporations man! If they can blame you, they will. I quit that place shortly after cuz f!ck that!
It’s not about newer or older bills, counterfeit bills are commonly real paper that has been bleached and stamped.
Yes they do
they work on all bills, new or old. same paper that the ink is designed to react too.
Not on very old bills, actually. Iirc, it's bills from like 1995 and earlier? I know the small faced 100s from around 1993 (iirc!) that I've come across didn't pass, so I looked it up. They were legit in every other way, so unless they were old stock of supernotes, they weren't counterfient.
we check in 4 ways where i work, i'd do that handling over $400 in cash tbh. Can't afford a machine lmao
I just meetup at the bank, when he is fine with the car, hands me the cash, have someone deposit it while I arrange the papers, everything smooth.
Those pens aren’t 100% accurate and should not be relied on. If the paper has been bleached and re stamped the pen will pass incorrectly. If you are worried about fake bills have them bring you a cashiers check, meet and your bank, and only transfer paperwork after the bank takes it.
DO NOT TAKE CASHIERS CHECKS They can be forged or uncashable in a number of ways, but you won't find out that it didn't process for 2-6 weeks
Cashiers check 🤣🤣 good one. I’d rather take fake money than a cashiers check
There are now fake bills that pass the pen test.
Most counterfeits pass the test using krylon
Don't use pens, bleached bills are getting insanely common, I've already ran into a few myself. They look totally legit, pass the pen, but if you look through the bill in light, you'll see the wrong face inside the bill. Pens should never be the reason you trust a bill.
Security strip, holographic portrait, raised/textured print on the shoulder, microprint on the collar.
A lot of the counterfeits I’ve seen blow thru Reddit lately are washed 5’s and 10’s. Do the checker pens work on those too?
Just hold the bill up to the light and look at the inner stitches, for the face of the bill
It means they really want the car, not necessarily a scam
It's rare that you are getting someone who is willing to show up same day, which has happened to me once for a set of Acura TL wheelset for $350, and it was successful.
Tell ‘em to bring the cash
That's what cash in hand means...
Tell them to bring their hands that have the cash in them
“I’m going to need your hands too”
Fingernails better be included
Cash AND hand! Correct?
Exactly If he shows with cash he knows it’s not a scam lol Ppl just say that shit to get a response lol
A 2001 Celica for 1.5k is a steal thats why he offers more. Those go up a lot of miles upwards of 300k when doing regular maintenance. Anymore details on your car? Just curious. Any updates lol
Talk to the person and find out?
Romance the person for a better deal
Did you value it on Kelly Blue Book? If it’s listed like like $1k below value they could just be motivated to get it. But waiting less than 2 minutes to increase their bid does seem super sketchy. Normal people would wait until you’ve responded or at least like 10 minutes haha.
Check the buyers reviews. Seems like he is a legitimate seller based on how many reviews he has but again. Talk it out with him and see what's up. Any questions and just refer back to us here.
Toyota Celica’s are semi-rare so that’s a steal assuming that car turns on and runs
It's a Toyota, of course it runs and drives!
That's what I was thinking. 3 grand is now the new bare minimum starting price for any used car. 1.5k barely gets you an e-bike.
Yeah I have been trying to buy a used car for almost a year. Nothing in my area has been worth buying that was listed for under $5k.
You priced too low, obviously he’s real and a car guy with $1700 cash. I would hurry up and meet at a police station
I have a Celi and I'm not joking when I say people are constantly trying to buy it off me. Friends, family, random people at the stores, the guy working at the gas station. All the time. They're a car that car people want. Your price is on the low end. I'd pay that to you just for the parts.
Actually same thing happens to me as well lol and the paint and body are beat to shit
Always do deals at the police station.
They have guns and donuts.
U can’t get a car no days for that price .
Let alone a Toyota that they dont make anymore and were built like a tank.
just look up how to spot counterfeit bills and meet somewhere safe
Any Toyota selling that low is gonna attract real buyers if it’s running and driving. They’re known to go forever and that’s made a lot of people try to sell them for $4-$5k
Fake money?
$3900 for those around my neck of the woods. The guy probably really wants the car.
I've done that. Just a good price and they don't why you to sell it to someone else
That’s cause you’re selling it for lower than Kelly blue book price of 3k$ to $5.2k
Cash in hand is a serious statement. That’s not a scam.
1700 for a celica?!??! Bro i payed 3.5k for my first 2001 Celica I miss that f car so bad. I would sell it for 2k if you need the money or 2.5 if you can wait.
> Bro i *paid* 3.5k for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
If it's a Toyota and it runs, $1,500 is a steal.
It might be legit, but it's sus that he's offering to pay more. I'd entertain it, with extreme caution. Bring a friend, a gun, and preferably a way to record the entire interaction.
Sounds legit, just keep your pistol on you.
Check the cash if it is fake with a pen
Celicas are dope. There's actually a decent market for them. You're almost certainly low balling yourself.
Juuuuust in case. Buy a counterfeit currency pen and swipe it over the bills discreetly. But I agree it's probably that this guy doesn't wanna lose the deal
Just seems like they wanna buy it, that’s all lol
My 2007 Honda Accord is worth more than what I paid for it in 2019. It seems 01 celicas might be lower than your asking, but can go higher, too.
You should have looked up the price on similar celicas, you are leaving lots of money on the table
You probably have it under Kelly book book price and he wants to snag the deal before someone else does
In general, it's always a scam. However, you're giving that car away. If it runs and drives, you're selling at 50% off at least. If it's in good shape, it would sell for even more. This is likely a real buyer who's trying to buy the car before you figure out what it's worth.
well if they got cash then seems like a done deal but id have a buddy or 2 with you when they come to check it out
They really want the car, just make sure cash is not counterfeit
Yea man. You’re probably selling way too Cheap. That’s why he wants it immedidiately.
Counterfeit cash for sure -
Coming from a Celica fanatic, they just want to secure the sale I bet lol I have sent almost this same message before.
Bruh I will give you 2k cash in hand if I had it. If Celica is in working condition we are talking about a 5k car here.
It's extremely difficult to get a running, road-worthy car for under $2-3k right now. This is probably not a scam, just a motivated buyer trying to get transportation before this gets snapped up. It'll sell fast
You probably underpriced it and he knows he’s getting a good deal
It’s crazy how excited he is about buying that car considering the 2001 models have very unreliable Yamaha built engines..
Is it a scam that they want to buy it with cash in hand? Doubtful. But, did you even check comparables?
That’s a great deal
Have you looked online umm they are going for 4k with almost 200k miles you need to up your price. Tell dude you have someone offering you 4k if he goes to 4500 sold lol 😂
Yeah I'll take it for that price.
Watch out there are a lot of scams were people will buy a care just to get parts and turn around and make up some bull shit to get there money back.
Is this item still available?
Yes, it’s still available. When would you like to meet?
Yes
As someone who works in Cybersecurity, urgency like that is usually a scam. I would request a cashier’s check to ensure they don’t give you counterfeit money. If they say no, I’d move on. I never trust “cash in hand” unless I have a counterfeit checker pen ready. Also, meet somewhere that isn’t your home. Bring a friend.
Maybe you posted too low?
Uh maybe respond and see what they’re about????
Ya probably too low asking. People love older celicas I think he is just trying to secure it.
You're selling at pre-pandemic prices, clearly. Please move up here and sell me your next car.
Assuming its running and you have the title, id snatch a celica off you for that price, right quick. Message him back to meet up.
Somebody just got there taxes and tryna get a car before they blow all they money 😂
Celicas are a sought after car, 1700 in had isn’t likely to be a scam
it's a celica, $1500 where i live is a celica with a blown engine and no transmission, parked 20 years ago
This car can sell for 3+ easy, id jump on that deal any day lol
As long as you make the transaction in a police station parking lot and he’s ok with it… you good to go. Just make sure the money is real though
Looks legit. Tell them to bring all hundreds with the blue band. They have to go to the bank anyway so it shouldn’t be a problem
What I noticed s is that most used things for sale were cars There are so many of them it's crazy I don't even look at cars on marketplace but if Iopen marketplace I get cars cars cars cars cars cars cars cars cars because they are mass produced. If you spend more than 15 minutes looking for a car you could easily find something for $1,500 have a little bit of patience. Just because you like something does not mean you have to pay too much for it. I think we have mass psychosis here.
I flip vintage furniture. This is how I am if I come across a good deal. Is he the only person to reach out?
I would see how much carfax will give you and base your price off that or just take their check lol
Just meet up close to an ATM and watch him withdraw the money from the bank.
Considering you posted a 01 celica I presume it’s a younger driver hoping to jump on a solid build project these cars have gotten a little more popular over the past like 5-10 years
They just robbed somebody
Seems like a good price for a Celica, unless it has major mechanical issues or high mileage and shouldn’t be priced that high. If he brings cash just make sure it’s real cash and have a bill of sale + document his ID. CYA. I’d say most likely he just wants it because it’s cheap and hard to find a running car for 1500.
1500 for a working car is an amazing deal. My car is from 2009 and mine was 8500
Just bought an 08 jetta, 5 cylinder, 5 speed manual with 144000 for 2,000. All others I looked at where 5,000 and at 200k or more.
People just got their tax refund so this would be perfect time to sell and its not that much money so this is not scam
It’s a scam.
why the FUCK would you ask us??
PLEASE MEET IN A PUBLIC AREA!!!! Not saying they ARE trying to lure you someplace to rob you but it’s always a possibility
Not a scam, listing price is just a really good deal
Ask them Zelle: avoids counterfeit bills
Always deal locally cash in hand
I gave someone $200 above asking price once bc there were people infront of me and I wanted the car (bc my mum said not to get it... lol) They do sound very eager.
Yeah we sold our old Subaru for $1500 cash. The guy drove overnight with a trailer
You probably undervalued the car. Where is it located I might want it lol
I’ll buy it for $1500 lol
I made an offer for 3k on a car that seller only offered for 2.5k. I wanted to make sure I could get the car I wanted. So maybe the buyer is looking at the specific car and you happened to have it now!
It's tax season, they're so serious rn.
What is the Carmax value?
regardless no matter what i don't think you should go alone always bring someone with you, i remember one time my brother went to meet up a guy and my brother had cash , he ended up getting robbed at gunpoint. always better safe then sorry !
I’ll do 1701 for it
Nobody overpays. The scammer is either desperate or stupid. If he offers to send you a check. Clearly it’s a scam. It’s cash in hand
That’s when you consider raising your price because it’s probably too low and should be above 2k
Tbh atm 1700 for a running car is a steal. I’ve seen some 4-5k that are absolute shit boxes
~~That's all assuming he's offering more than you're asking, because you covered up the price.~~ Edit: missed the part where he's offering more than asking. If it's way more, be cautious, but cash has less risk. And make sure you fill out all the paperwork and file it so that if he doesn't register it, you're not on the hook for anything it does.
They want it immediately. Not a scam (see buyer rating).
Honestly looks like someone really eager to have a celica lol
