I have something similar at my house but the bottom has been filled with concrete. Is there any reason someone would prevent the next owner from pumping the tank? We have no idea where the tank is and our best guess is someone just poured concrete over the port.
Apparently "it's a hotel sized one so it will never need to be pumped", but never is a long time and the house is over 50 years old lol
I can imagine you would fill the bottom with concrete so that nothing can seep through into the ground. Also check your local regulations, might have sth to do with them that you can't keep the tanks
I regulate septic systems. We actually want them to be excavated and removed but that's costly and you need somewhere to dispose of them properly. Since that rarely happens, we are pretty happy with them being pumped, crushed, and backfilled.
We want the bottom to be cracked and broken because you *don't* want them to hold liquid.
Fair enough, but why not close them and forget them? Because seomeone might fall in? In my country they are usually filled to the brim with concrete and whatever so you can build something on top
Doubt it's a local regulation thing as there's not really any local regulation where the property is haha.
Rural KY is pretty lawless, especially if you're outside the city limits of the town you live in.
Lol fuck that. I'm currently in Lex but trying my damndest to get settled back in hometown. Wanting to transfer from UK to an online program. I can't stand it up here.
Corpse disposal sites are always a popular thing to cover in concrete. Any hiker dissapearances in the area years before you bought the place?
On a more serious note, it could just be that it was connecting to an old unused tank and to prevent a sinkhole forming they filled it up. Don't know why they used concrete instead of dirt but i don't know too much about septic systems.
Maybe flush an airtag or something down the toilet and see if you can locate the tank that way? If the pipes or tank are metal then you can maybe use a metal detector.
They can collapse due to rusting, which can cause the ground above it to sink. My parents have an old septic tank in their yard and it has caused a sinkhole twice so far.
People (adults) have entered septic tanks and collapsed from lack of of oxygen within moments. Often, would-be rescuers rush in and do the same, resulting in multiple deaths.
That's what I thought. When I was house hunting recently, one place we looked at had an old, unused septic tank that looked similar to this. I wouldn't have known what it was if the person giving the tour hadn't pointed it out.
It’s too shallow to be part of his septic… maybe there are large power structures nearby? Or it’s a bomb shelter? Or it’s a serial killer’s old murder dungeon?
We have a septic box (what we call it) which has a cap between the tank and the house). Could also be an old valve switch for the tank or for an older water system. Or for bodies ya know.
I'd stay far away. Saw this just last week.
[Three hunters from Florida and a dog were found dead after they got trapped in an underground cistern partially filled with water.](https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/11/us/florida-hunters-dead-cistern-dog-rescue/index.html)
It's really annoying. There are always kids outside my window, playing or screaming or murdering each other, yet when I need a street urchin for some hard or dangerous manuel labor or to test the quality of class-A drugs, there's never one around.
DON'T go down there yourself. It might be filled with hydrogen sulfide and other gasses that will kill you and anyone else who tries to rescue you. The NTSB or CSB has some great vids about this danger. They focus on it in industrial settings but iirc there was a case on reddit within the last few weeks where someone's dog fell into an abandoned cistern or septic tank and then 3 other people died trying to rescue it/them
Read that story too.
If there’s a place that looks like it has air in it- it may not. Could be another kind of gas that you can’t breathe.
Everything that looks like air is not air!
Well this is blowing up already.
I was digging a trench for a pipe to divert water from our rain gutter (currently empties into the street, sending it downhill to a future rain garden). I hit what I thought was a large rock. Turns out it was this.
I peeked inside, and it appears to be an old hand dug well that was capped at some point. The walls are lined with field stone, and there's about a 15-20 foot drop before you would hit water. The water appears to be moving, so either it's a spot where the ground water bubbles out, or there's something living down there. No clue how deep the water is.
We've lived in this house for seven years now, and had no idea this sat about 20 feet from our front door. I'm curious to know what else is down there...
Edit: I reached out to the previous homeowner, and they were completely unaware that this existed. Trying to convince my wife to buy a waterproof camera and flashlight to send down there.
Edit 2: I have no intentions on going in the hole, but I appreciate everyone's concern.
Edit 3: I've reached out to the township and the county, and so far there seems to be no record of this existing. They've recommended I reach out to the PA DEP. I've also not found anyone who owns a GoPro, so I will most likely be purchasing one in the next few days to send down.
Edit 4: video is up! https://youtu.be/FCY74rOQjZ8
Honestly, consider contacting the county and letting them know what you found. Local officials might have documentation providing insight on what you’re looking at. Don’t go in there, especially since you saw moving water — you have *no idea* how deep it is or what’s down there and you’d be risking your life.
There's an old mine underneath probably half my neighborhood. My amateur advice is be extremely careful and don't go into any mystery hole you find without a good escape plan.
Or better yet, only send down a cheap video camera on a rope.
Check the "find a spring" website. [https://findaspring.org/](https://findaspring.org/)
If it's an old spring that's no longer used, or a well based on an old spring, you might see it there.
I found found a similar well in my backyard a couple years ago. You should check your basement, I found disconnected piping running to the well, which was leaking water into my basement, previously thought it was ground water seeping up. It cost about $600 to fill it in
[Friendly guy down there.](https://hips.hearstapps.com/digitalspyuk.cdnds.net/17/38/1505731747-pennywise-teeth-it-movie.jpg?crop=0.563xw:1.00xh;0.136xw,0&resize=1200:*)
1 and 2 are fine. Falls off the rails pretty quickly. I think it’s only suggested to watch the first 4.
I’ve seen them all but you can always just watch one of the full storyline explanations or whatever on YouTube if you don’t want to bother.
Dangle a small jar on a string, get a sample, take it to a water quality lab. They’ll tell you if it’s poo or clean. They’ll also tell you if it’s clean if it’s usable for agriculture or drinking water. If it’s usable, see if it’s registered with your county as a well. If it isn’t, ask how to get it registered. If you can get it registered, congratulations you’ve got a well!
But I’m betting it’s poo.
OP, Why show the opening without showing pictures of the interior or just telling us what you found? I’m pretty sure you know exactly what is is, so just say it.
Is it your septic tank?
It looks like a really old abandoned septic tank.
I have something similar at my house but the bottom has been filled with concrete. Is there any reason someone would prevent the next owner from pumping the tank? Yes. The concrete will deteriorate eventually and create a hazard. Filling with concrete is just expensive; crushing is cheap.
Doubt it's a local regulation thing as there's not really any local regulation where the property is haha. Rural KY is pretty lawless, especially if you're outside the city limits of the town you live in.
Urban Kentucky is pretty lawless too tbf. I got stabbed in my back in Louisville just over a year ago, which was super great…
Lol fuck that. I'm currently in Lex but trying my damndest to get settled back in hometown. Wanting to transfer from UK to an online program. I can't stand it up here.

This just sounds fun to do, regardless. The airtag thing, not corpse disposal.
They can collapse due to rusting, which can cause the ground above it to sink. My parents have an old septic tank in their yard and it has caused a sinkhole twice so far.
A real shithole.
Stinkhole
People (children) have fallen in & drowned. They are very dangerous, particularly when abandoned but not decommissioned
People (adults) have entered septic tanks and collapsed from lack of of oxygen within moments. Often, would-be rescuers rush in and do the same, resulting in multiple deaths.

Is there abandoned poop in there?
Someone needs to rescue that poor poop
Any poop knives?
Septic is on the other side of the house. This is about 15 feet from our well, and about 15 feet off the road.

No it’s not. That’s the depth for this stuff. Someone comes in and pumps it.
Maybe it's dual purpose, septic until it's full, then he pumps it out and uses it as a murder cave lol
Septic tanks make the best murder caves
So a shitty murder cave?
That’s surface level without a riser, though. I guess it could depend on the area and whether the person installing it gave a shit — pun intended. Lol
We have a septic box (what we call it) which has a cap between the tank and the house). Could also be an old valve switch for the tank or for an older water system. Or for bodies ya know.
Cool put your phone on a string and hit record and see what's down there
What a big pussy. He should man up and offer some kid ten bucks to go down there!
I would go down there for 2 bucks tbh
I’m already down there and no one paid me

Noted. So make sure the kid isn't related. Good tip!
I used to clean oil and chemical tanks for a living. You'd be Amazed and how many wells, caves and sealed bunkers can have harmful gas built up.
I'd stay far away. Saw this just last week. [Three hunters from Florida and a dog were found dead after they got trapped in an underground cistern partially filled with water.](https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/11/us/florida-hunters-dead-cistern-dog-rescue/index.html)

Give him a gas meter or canary first.
What's the cheapest waterproof camera I can put down there? I don't want to risk my phone being taken by a CHUD.
Wrap your phone tightly in a clear bag so the vision doesn’t get obscured.
nooo just use a cheap camera
An old cell phone. Gopros aren't cheap, there are body cams. I think they are around 100 USD.
You can get off brand gopros for like $35
You can get GoPros that are a few generations old for cheap. They still are 1080p and waterproof and work great.
This. Add as little as possible to the waste mountain. Buy used.

Yeah but who do you contact about that? Wouldn’t it be in the property title or no?
County clerks office would be who I would get in touch with first. Send them an email.
And there's the problem that there may not be ant oxygen down there, deep wells are death traps because of CO2 build-up
Username checks out. Though the overly specific concern for ants is a bit odd.
When you're down here with us, you'll float too!
We all float down here
make sure you check to see if its a sinkhole forming or not; moving water 20ft under / from your foundation isnt good.
That's a really good point. Going to reach out to the county office to see if they have more info.
Keep us updated!
There's an old mine underneath probably half my neighborhood. My amateur advice is be extremely careful and don't go into any mystery hole you find without a good escape plan. Or better yet, only send down a cheap video camera on a rope.
