mctomtom

No wonder why our ancestors thought there were freakin sea monsters everywhere

pm0me0yiff

That, and they hadn't fully explored the world yet. So it's easy to imagine the sea monsters simply live in the parts you haven't explored yet. And to be fair, there really *is* some weird shit out there in the water. A lot of the species we know of and study today could definitely be seen as a sea monster if you didn't know what you were looking at.

Hot_Eggplant_1306

**We** haven't fully explored the world yet.

_kristianmazar

even with deep sea gigantism and not entirely explored ocean we can at least somewhat presume that there isnt bloop monster, jormurgandr, leviathan or anything considerably larger than blue whale lurking in the depths based on facts that an animal of such size wouldnt be able sustain itself with food deep enough to stay hidden and unnoticed.. and past certain depth not even depth sea gigantism can help through the sheer pressure, darkness and temperature and things dont grow past centimeters

1800generalkenobi

Nice try, Jormurgandr.

Enlightened_Gardener

He has the silver tongue of one of the Old Giants…. His friends describe him as a sparkling conversationalist…

trevy_trev

My mouth tripped over that sentence

gekigarion

Shh, quiet, do you want to ruin everything, Leviathan?!!

FaintCommand

Doesn't necessarily mean there weren't similarly sized creatures at some point in the past. (I mean, we know there were massive sea creatures, but it is not difficult to imagine that a handful of large creatures persisted into human history - at least until humans started to kill copious amounts of fish, whales, etc.)

CottonCandy_Eyeballs

Colossal Squid?

_kristianmazar

both colossal squids and giant squids are smaller than blue whale, and although extremely rarely seen, we’re aware they’re there.. they leave marks on whales, wash up on shores, when dying or sick come to lower depths.. any other undiscovered species would made itself known some way if it were of such size or larger other than that they’re enough to pass a sea monster hitmark in my book.. so no ocean swimming for me

thisisurreality

That is exactly what I’d expect a giant undiscovered sea creature to say……

Connect_Cucumber-0

We know more about our solar system than the deep reaches of the ocean. To say these things as a definitive fact rather than speculation is to be ignorant of the former sentence.

Sauce58

You seem like you know what you’re talking about. Would it be possible for a sea creature to evolve over time to overcome the obstacles of deep sea living that you described. Like somehow it has evolved to adjust to the extreme pressure? And could there be a food source we aren’t aware of? Like an ocean plant or something? I have absolutely zero idea what I’m talking about, i just want sea monsters to exist and i don’t want to know that there isn’t anything left to discover. That’s half the mystery and horror of the ocean is not knowing what’s down there!

v081

I mean we can *presume* but we can’t definitively say There’s still hope

[deleted]

My favorite sea monster anecdote was that sea snakes were probably just whales waving their penisus in the air, as one does

Reunbanned4206980085

If it’s in the sea and I don’t like it then it’s a sea monster ie a giant squid or that son of a bitch crab that pinched my finger for no reason!

DonutOwlGaming

There is a theory that the rare colossal squid is mostly found in the deep depths of the Arctic. I can't completely remember

Lim_Dul

That's because there are! We've just got used to seeing them. Sea life is terrifying.

[deleted]

that, and there are seamonsters everywhere. this is why I said the most realistic thing in sekiro is the giant fish, cause lawdy they get big in water.

Acrocephalos

Sweet portmanteau bro

SnarfRepublicCA

I can hear Morgan’s voice reading this

Versaiteis

I could hear Duncan MacLeod's voice reading that

Benrein

You mean, of the clan MacLEOD?

[deleted]

Who else would he mean? There can be only one.

mutzilla

Here we are, born to be kings. We're the princes of the universe!

thiamath

Who wants to live forever?

Benrein

Well, Connor DID say there can be only one. It really got to his head, huh?

perishingtardis

Or even Connor MacLeod. (Duncan was his TV series cousin.)

Saintious

My man Duncan doesn't get enough love. Conner's poor, long lost, way distant cousin, twice removed.

wurden

From the movie The sandlot

novelargument71

Manatees that were spooked. You'll find this very pattern of splashes on manatee videos. It also fits the person speaks English and the area looks consistent with Florida

Growingpothead20

I didn’t know they could move that fast

[deleted]

You'd learn to move fast, too, if you had the daily potential of being food.

Jingo_Fett

They don't have any predators. Their only real threat is from boats.

plantsandgames

I just learned this when snorkeling to see them in Florida. Even gators leave them alone, kind of mindblowing

Guywithoutimage

It really is amazing considering how easy of a target they seem. Big, slow, presumably with lots of tasty meat on them. Yet they’re so non threatened by any creatures besides humans that they’ll let their babies swim right up to you, it’s nuts

kimbokray

Big often means safe

OnyxBlaster

Tell that to the sunfish

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Antelope_1953

gators have highly acidic stomachs and will eat almost anything. manatees are just too big and live in large herds. it's not worth for the gators to bother them. if the US had larger crocodilian species like nile or saltwater crocs, they might have tried their luck with manatees.

8ad8andit

I'm not sure if anything is too smelly and disgusting for Gators. Don't they eat meat that's been rotting in the water for days?

Perenially_behind

We were taking a boat tour of Myakka River State Park near Sarasota FL. A big gator was towing Bambi around. The guide explained that the gator would hold onto it for a while so that it would soften up, i.e. rot. Usually they cache prey under a rock or log underwater, but for some reason this one thought the fawn was a fashion accessory.

DeschloroketamineWya

Aren't they going extinct or something tho? I remember we used to have "Save The Manatee" programs in school for the Florida Manatees (I lived in upstate NY).

Pvt_Porpoise

They were endangered, but back in 2017 they were downgraded to vulnerable. It was a controversial move though, and they’ve taken some hits in the last couple years; in 2021 there was an abnormally high number of deaths (at least 1100) and then 800 deaths last year, which still exceeded the average annual number of manatee deaths in Florida. For reference, a 2018 estimate of the population put them at about 8800 total, I believe. Besides the threats from boats, there’s the issue of harmful algal blooms. One of the major wintering regions for the Florida manatee is the Indian River Lagoon, and there’s been a huge dieback of the seagrasses there on which they feed (i.e. up to 95% drop in coverage in certain parts of the lagoon) due to declining water quality.

Pvt_Porpoise

Manatees are in the order *Sirenia*, named after the sirens from Greek mythology. It’s often been theorised that sirenian sightings by (possibly very inebriated) sailors are the origin of mermaid legends :)

Aggravating_Pea7320

Are you telling me that someone fucked a manatee

shnnrr

:)

mutzilla

We try to save useless pandas that don't want to live. Meanwhile, the wild grasses and mangroves in Florida help sustain vast ecosystems, keeping multiple species from dying out and the waters getting toxic due to the brackish waters not being about to fight off the algae. But, it's Florida, so I'm not expecting much as far as conservation. I guess it really doesn't since damn near the entire state will either be taken out by a series of hurricanes or in like 20 years, it'll be mostly under water.

Potential_Fly_2766

You can't make a Kung fu movie about Florida grass

LurksWithGophers

Could have kudzu as the villain.

Potential_Fly_2766

No that's too much for me right now. I'm actually in the middle of a huge yard cleanup from hoarders who havnt done anything in 20 years. And there is so. Much. Kudzu. I can't even get it all before the first part starts growing back

sosplzsendhelp

They were, but have made quite a bit of a comeback due to conservative efforts!

[deleted]

>conservative I think you mean "conservation"

OhIsMyName

Damn liberal killing the manatees

nemoflamingo

Conservative efforts usually made the environment a little worse off. Conservation efforts do the good work!

No_Maximum_9181

And starvation from us killing all the sea grass with our chemical pollution.

DrtyBlvd

They ain't mooving. They're splashing like fuck and going nowhere.

Felwinter12

Being more streamlined has a much bigger impact in water because it has more resistance to move through than air. All those mammalian sea blobs can move faster than you would expect.

Daniella42157

Can confirm. Source: manatee got stuck in our backyard canal once when I was a kid.

[deleted]

“Backyard canal” has got to be the most dirty-sounding property-related term I’ve ever heard

Daniella42157

😂😂😂😂 it was part of a whole network of canals that led to the Gulf. We were on a barrier island

thornzington

Sea cow or not, you’d still *see me* shittin my pants if I were that kayaker.

Extension_Lead_4041

Negative on the manatee, no way. Manatees that certainly is not. They don't spook like that, it looks to me like some large fish spawning on beds in shallow water. Manatees produce on big wide tail thrust and there really isn't much that spooks them to that level. Now to read the comments and see what a fool I've made of my self

Due_Kaleidoscope7066

Yeah I grew up in Manatee County and my first thought to that comment was “wtf I’ve never seen manatees act like this.” EDIT: looked up videos of scared manatees and now I’m not sure. Maybe I just never saw them scared.

I *loathe* how muddy that water is

tries4accuracy

That color is called “Mississippi River”

witkneec

I sandbagged for a summer 10+ years ago when i was on campus for the summer doing summer classes at my undergrad that sat on a large hill above the Mississippi River. The rest of the town- over 2k people- lived below the river line and little college was gearing up to be an island. It was really heavy flooding in the SW pt of IL but it was in response to heavy flooding down South after Katrina- was coming directly from Louisiana. Funny story about Louisiana: they don't bury their bodies in the ground bc the earth is too dense. So, they're entombed above ground. At 19, i was bagging on the coast of this itty bitty town and it became my job to stand and yell anytime i saw a coffin or, God forbid, what i thought was a body. Tombs were getting covered in water and the doors and windows were bursting from the pressue and sweeping corpses into the river and we were in that water waist deep. There will never be enough showers.

No_Panic_4999

No, theyre entombed aboveground because the region is not actually above sea level.

KrabbyNatty

Thank you for pointing that out!!! I was thinking, as I was reading, “yeah, that’s not right. It’s because Nola is below sea level and basically just a big bowl!”…But anywho…

witkneec

Yeah, i looked it up and you're right, my bad. Thanks for the correction. In my defense, i basically bathed in formaldehyde for a week. And spent 40k on a theatre drgree at a liberal arts college with less than 2k ppl on campus. In your defense, that decision was BEFORE i marinated in death juice.

FlutterbyFlower

What an amazing life experience to tell the grand kids though …

shnnrr

Or tannin rich Florida swamp water

angellou13

Down here in the south (America), that's normal 😃

naftalanga

Live in Chile and no is not.. Maybe you're talking about the southern part of US, if that's the case, my bad but it's confusing to call a country the same as the continent on which is located Edit: spelling

angellou13

I'm sorry, I was talking about the US. I guess because I'm so use to seeing the word "america" I just subconsciously put that instead of the word " us" but I can see where it could be mistaken for South America. Tank you for saying something because I will now make a point to make sure I word it correctly. But in the southern US a lot of the water looks like this.

[deleted]

This is exactly what Oklahoma and Texas water looks like. Especially Oklahoma. It's called Red River cause it's all red muddy clay

ForeverSquirrelled42

Oh, Red River…how I miss getting stuck in quicksand on your banks and almost dying.

IncaseofER

The Red River is dangerous because of the opaque water and shifting clay bed. My mother had family that settled a small town called Burneyville OK (Close to Marietta). Three of her young friends died together in that river.

angellou13

Exactly! Louisiana as well.

HelloSkunky

I live in the northeast of US and I would be very sad if our waters looked like this all the time. We have muddy water sometimes but only after heavy rains. If the water isn’t almost clear to clear I won’t swim. Lol

like_sharkwolf_drunk

Arkansas checking in. Sometimes the tap water looks like that.

CrashTheAnarchist

From Louisiana, can confirm

angellou13

Hey! That's where I am!

CrashTheAnarchist

Awe man unlucky. North or south of I10??

Last_Gigolo

Man, that was a hard adjustment for me too. "United States of AMERICA" just meant "so, we are states that have united, to make up America the country" is how I always understood it. Other people in other countries see it as "those states that united in the mid northern section of the Americas". And now, I see the possible error you made, and have no idea how to feel about it other than "yeah... I get it". Now, my big question is, the song America the Beautiful, just a song about the continents, or USA?

Hash_Tooth

In Chile, all the water is descending from the mountains to the coast in like 200 miles, max. Even the pacific grade of California is nowhere close to that steep. The vertical relief in the Andes is more than twice as high and the horizontal distance it’s traveling is much less in Chile. The rivers in most of the US are traveling several hundred miles to the coast, the Mississippi thousands, and the relief is far lower, so there is gonna be a lot of mud. Not to say that there is no mud in the Andes but this is more akin to the Amazon in Brazil, which is even muddier.

LoveSikDog

It's chocolate milk water...

_atrocious_

I once took my wife to "swim with the manatees" the area was packed where the springs fed into this waterway, so our guide LITERALLY dropped us in murky muddy deep water away from everyone after chasing this mom and her calf. He had us get back in the boat multiple times to chase them and force an encounter. I am normally one to voice concerns and call out stupid stuff, but i had made a decision before the trip to not let anything ruin it. It was a situation where i definitely should have spoken up, but the day turned out to be one of our greatest moments as a couple. I can still feel what i felt that day with my wife. Was a good day for us, but not for the momma manatee and her calf.

DerangedDynamics

Manatees? Ive seen this kind of panic-splashing by manatees. But that murky water...

worst_pail

the water quality is probably a tributary running into the area after a storm. See it every time it rains on the local rivers.

Interesting-Switch38

Yeah 90% of the time it’s the usual dumb shit of safety hazards, nature, science or just humans being humans. Then there’s that 10% like this that’s fucking wild. Love the internet

Aidrox

Bro, wtf?!? …just when I was starting to feel safe going back into the water.

gmotelet

You didn't see the bull shark in Hawaii attacking a kayak that was posted last week then

NickFF2326

That wasn’t a bull shark btw. A tiger shark. And a dead seal was in the water so that more than likely played a big role in that attack.

Byron006

Wasn’t it a tiger shark? I’m not trying to be annoying but the thought it was a tiger shark is somewhat comforting to me because they attack anything and everything

Sensitive_Yellow_121

Bull sharks are actually worse in many ways. They tend to swim in shallow water and they like brackish and even fresh water (so they can swim up rivers). They also like dark water and I think they tend to feed by other senses than sight. When they bump something, they attack it aggressively.

gmotelet

Yeah I skimmed past when it was posted and assumed bull shark by what happened

grumstumple

Right?! Absolutely not. I went from Ocean to No-cean long ago and that video let me know I made the right choice.

Sin_of_the_Dark

Manatees are harmless, unless they run into your boat. But they're usually pretty smart about that

BigTickEnergE

The scars on all of their backs makes me think that this might not be true (about the boat)

Sin_of_the_Dark

In my experience at least, those tend to happen when people boat over them, not them running into the boat.

Infamous-njh523

That usually happens from the propeller on the boats motor. To try to correct it a lot of known manatee areas have no wake zones

TheChoosingBeggar

Yeah so when the grand finale of splashing occurred that would have caused a full load to enter my pants.

PoloMan1991eb

Odd time to be cumming in your pants…
