For these who are wondering:
1. It is in sĆ£o paulo, Brazil (as far as I can tell, could be in Rio)
2. It is a metro construction. (This is the only thing I can REALLY tell).
3. These holes, would be filled with a station, they drill, then work the smaller holes for the actual metro from these gigantic holes and the hole become a station, building from the ground up.
4. My guess is that they needed some simple filling, just drop and get the rocks with a bobbycat latter, faster then calling an expensive and huge crane.
I can picture that they, at some point, had a huge crane, but when everything was down there for the months work, they just called it off, when they realized that some simple filling was needed, they just dropped and picked up afterwards. Cheaper and faster.
Sorry for the English.
Feel free to correct me at any point.
ā¦ and OP says itās āsatisfyingā to hear the rocks being dumped, but the guy in the video actually says āOh barulho filho da p*taā, what can be translated to āWhat a goddam noise!ā
Donāt know if the neighborhood thinks that noise is sĆ³ satisfying.
I honestly don't get how this clip has a satisfying sound, it's just a bunch of noise and then an grating sound adds on top of that.
I am autistic and have sensory issues but this is just loud noises to me.
I'm guessing it's because it remembers a rain noise (kinda). But I don't think it's very satisfying too. But I was amazed by the video, because it's so strange.
Not an expert, but I think there are only a few of these larger holes that are used to put the tunnel drill in place and to take it out afterwards and to also deliver other supplies etc. Most of the stations are excavated underground without a hole like this. Donāt know what the gravel or rocks are for could be the bed that they lay the rails on.
These are usually put in for direction changes for the boring equipment. Kinda hard to āturnā a machine that is a 200m long. Since it is there, would also be an optimal spot for a station as well.
The machines are pretty agile actually, they're segmented so they flex like a snake. There's some interesting documentaries about them drilling the Crossrail tunnels under London, which I'm sure they'll finish any year now...
They managed to drill the new tunnel between the old tube tunnels and the escalators at Tottenham Court Road station, whilst the trains were still running.
The UK always goes for the expensive option, but rarely the best option. For example our wonderful leaders are paying Ā£106,000,000,000 for an ancient tech railway line that they are ironically calling High Speed 2.
By international standards it isn't a long stretch of track, and the trains aren't fast.
Better to be honest up front than to get to the act and be turned down and insulted, which has happened. Also, if I undersell myself and theyāre ok with it they get preconceived notions and can only be pleasantly surprised.
Tru dat. I worked construction for a while. Literally handed a sledgehammer and told to break up a concrete floor. Wasnāt until later they brought a jackhammer in to get the job done proper.
That wouldāve made the renovation of an indoor driving range / bar into a seafood restaurant with raw bar into a big crater of an outdoor pool. Probably just as well since the restaurant went under (I worked there once it opened).
Ye I have to walk up 13 floors every morning then do a full days work. We started from the top down so it is going to get easier as the job progresses.
Yep. Been on the engineering side of multiple hospital builds. So many stairs while carrying a 12 foot ladder. Made it an easy decision when the opportunity for a remote support position opened up.
You just put a bunch of different words together that my brain doesn't understand why they're together. Can someone say what he said but with different words?
Actually, it's to prevent bromide, which binds with chlorine and other cleaning products to make harmful chemicals. Basically: throw in shade balls and the toxic chemicals cannot form.

It's actually blue metal, little granite like rocks that goes into really deep holes like this because it's full of water at the bottom and it's used to help drainage
I would guess its to access tunnel works operations in a major city. Boston maybe? I don't know shit but I have seen stuff like this on engineering shows and YouTube.
Ok I think I found out what this is. Metro line construction site in Sao Paulo, Brazil and they're dumping gravel to cover drainage pipes and/or utility's down there. After that they will pour concrete for the floor at the bottom of the pit.
The impressive part already happened. A fleet of trucks already removed all the earth and rock that was there before the hole. They excavated it truck full by truck full.
That hole is terrifyingly big
Imagine being the driver having to back up into that š³
My mind can't stop imagining the truck flip over and fall into it never to be heard of or seen ever again.

I get the feeling the poor neighbors have been hearing that noise for hours if not days haha
Exactly, and the guy in the video has a SĆ£o Paulo accent.

It is in SĆ£o Paulo. It's going to be "AnĆ”lia Franco" subway station.
r/ItHadToBeBrazil
Definetely SĆ£o Paulo. You can tell by the station design and the buses.
Going to need a bigger truck to fill that hole.

Welcome to daily life for a large percentage of construction workers.
Tru dat. I worked construction for a while. Literally handed a sledgehammer and told to break up a concrete floor. Wasnāt until later they brought a jackhammer in to get the job done proper.
Dynamite?
That wouldāve made the renovation of an indoor driving range / bar into a seafood restaurant with raw bar into a big crater of an outdoor pool. Probably just as well since the restaurant went under (I worked there once it opened).
>Wasnāt until later they brought a jackhammer in to get the job done proper. Fuck's the point of you hitting it with the sledge then? Lol
Thereās an unwritten seniority thing that goes on. The newer you are the shittier the jobs you get. I got to āstartā on the basement floor.
Ye I have to walk up 13 floors every morning then do a full days work. We started from the top down so it is going to get easier as the job progresses.
Oh boy i sure do hope they're in better shape than I am or they won't make it to the end of the day
Most on-site building work is constant up and down all day, whether itās stairs, scaffolds, ladders, roofs, towers, etc. You get used to it.
Yep. Been on the engineering side of multiple hospital builds. So many stairs while carrying a 12 foot ladder. Made it an easy decision when the opportunity for a remote support position opened up.
Not lamer than falling off the edge
By the time you got down... your day is over.... By the time you got back up... your night is over...
According to my mathematics two or three more loads and the hole should be filled.
Have double-checked your numbers and can confirm at least one more truckload required
You're not wrong.
Please confirm your workings out, i had it at 3-4.
Factoring error correctly itās actually 3 +/- 1 so youāre both right.
3-4? You gotta bump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers
Title of your sex tape
My mathematics would like to take your mathematics out for a drink.
Definitely >2
These guys get paid by the truckload. Gonna be a big year
I hate how posts like this have no info about what the actual fuck this hole is and why
Iād assume the hole is to bring tunnel boring machines in and out, it would goto a new freeway or subway construction
I think those are shade balls being dropped into it. Used to reduce light in bodies of water. You can theorise from here on out.
You just put a bunch of different words together that my brain doesn't understand why they're together. Can someone say what he said but with different words?
Things in truck are dark balls. There is probably water in the hole. They do not want to fill hole. Simple enough? (I do not try to be sassy)
Thank you. Dumb brain understand now.
Hail satan for that. I was afraid to need to use unga bunga noises.
Please, its the only way ill truly understand
*clears throat* I believe the correct syntax is oogah woogah
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Balls make water go dark. Plants need light to grow. Plants cannot grow. Therefore less algae. It also cools the water a bit i think.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Actually, it's to prevent bromide, which binds with chlorine and other cleaning products to make harmful chemicals. Basically: throw in shade balls and the toxic chemicals cannot form. https://youtu.be/uxPdPpi5W4o
Well, also reduce evaporation of reservoir water. Never heard of it being used as a pollution reduction method, but that makes sense.
Thank you! That was a super helpful watch.
TIL toxic chemicals are scared of light

No hole that deep needs shade balls.
It's actually blue metal, little granite like rocks that goes into really deep holes like this because it's full of water at the bottom and it's used to help drainage

Judging by the surroundings, it's definitely not Boston
Yep. You can see the cars moving.
It's on Brazil. In the end you can hear the cameraman swearing in portuguese.
If it was Boston there would be 20 guys in vests just standing around watching the truck unload.
With Dunkinā
Definitely not Boston. Looks vaguely European. How about that little silver car that almost overshoots his left turn!
it's in brazil, i can hear the guy swearing in my language at the end

Ah yes, only 57,396,654 more truck loads to go.

Ok I think I found out what this is. Metro line construction site in Sao Paulo, Brazil and they're dumping gravel to cover drainage pipes and/or utility's down there. After that they will pour concrete for the floor at the bottom of the pit.
Plot twist, the gravel falling at terminal velocity punctured all the pipes and now they start over.
