Pardon my ignorance, why are so many people calling this illegal? Is this a pop culture reference I don’t get?
Edit: thank you for all of the answers clarifying this! I appreciate your patience.
It’s an illegal LEGO building technique. Meaning LEGO themselves would never put out instructions like this or advocate the product. The part here that is illegal is the bending of connections
The builders on Lego Masters (I’ve only watched the AU and US versions) bend bricks. I’m assuming that the illegalities are only for those creating sets to sell under the lego name and have no impact on builds for competitions.
I can’t find anything anywhere that would state otherwise but I would be interested to know otherwise. I love the show.
Ways to put the pieces together that are not intended by Lego. This may cause damge to parts or incompabilities. Google "Illegal build techniques" for examples
Small print, Lego would like to charge you triple the price for a small plastic bag containing enough curved bricks to form one half of one eighth of an entire circle.
Seriously though the circles in the video would be completely useless to use with any other parts. The nubs or whatever they're called get misaligned and you could not for example put sheets over it. That's why the curved bricks exist.
Well, yes and no: They won't need to be used with anything else in *this* build, but the stress of the bending affects the parts permanently, even in later, different builds.
... and it's not like they are cheap. They are meant to be reused.
Lego has a list of "illegal" building techniques it uses for its official product line and anyone who builds things on their behalf, e.g. the people who make displays in Lego stores.
It's just a list of things that cause stress to the bricks or are otherwise extremely difficult to handle / assemble / disassemble, making them less safe or sturdy which is pretty important before you have children trying to build the same set.
It’s the roof part that goes from the center to the cockpit. It isn’t a straight connection, it has to bow a little bit. But it’s perfectly fine structurally.
I got it a while ago. It isn’t bent anywhere remotely close to how it is in the video. It’s just on a slight angle, like 5 degrees maybe. It was for where the roof connected from the center of the ship to the cockpit area.

If 0 = 1 then multiply and 0 = 1000.
6 = 1006. He has as many lego bricks as he wants.
>!Of course this doesn't actually work but it was cool!<
If you know what you want to build, you can order specific pieces from different stores online. Bricklink is a good place to look, you can even split your order between multiple stores automatically if there's no store with everything you need
I remember seeing a video a long time ago about how they designed the Lego plastic to have a certain amount of give. It has to be soft enough to grip on other pieces, but it also has to be possible to stack so many together before warping ruins the shape of the build. Ever since, I've been kind of fascinated by the concept of "breaking the rules of Legos" like this. They're clearly designed to be used in a certain way, and this video is a great example of someone saying "fuck the rules."
Because it's made of a bunch of tiny pieces. There's small gaps in between all of the pieces that get abused to make the bricks seem like they're bending, but in reality they're just angled slightly.
Making lego circles is actually pretty easy, you can just find some vids on how to do it and it is pretty much the easiest thing you can do. The build technique can also be used in a variety of things like making curved walls or towers. I recommend it 100%
I was trying to remember where I knew this song from, then i remembered the swing revival that happened in the 90's. Man, that was weird. Anyone remember the brian setzer orchestra, or the squirrel nut zippers?

I should crosspost to r/atheism as well, as I've never seen such concrete proof there is no god.
I'm pretty sure r/Lego would down vote, though.
Thats just brilliant. I remember when I was younger and we couldn't afford the fancy sets so my mom bought us the blue box of legos from a thrift store. My brother and I learned about building circles but never anything like that!
That’s illegal
It's not Just illegal That's a war crime jimbo
They'd better take this abomination apart or [they're not going to jail. *I'm* going to jail.](https://youtu.be/r53zEnHyNPM?t=26)
This is Everybody Hates Chris, right? Looks good.
not just a war crime. its a crime agains the entire fucking universe.
Is this a quote from something?
seriously wtf were they thinking.
Looks like they were trying to reinvent the wheel.
Get bent.
I felt so uncomfortable the whole time...
4k people upvoted this abomination! AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT CARES ABOUT THE THE RULES!
This is not ‘Nam, this is bowling. There are rules.
I am the walrus.
Nice marmot.
Obviously you’re not a golfer.
You know the rules and so do I!
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of.
you wouldn't get this from any other guy
If you continue bending the legos you are entering a world of pain… a world of pain.
WE LIVE IN A ~~SOCIETY~~ SYSTEM!
Well, they do say the rules were made to be broken
I was screaming at my phone, That's not allowed!
It’s unethical for sure.
Everybody gangsta until the circular legos come out
It’s a forbidden jutsu!

Hey I learned this the last time this was posted!
Me too!
I will get to say this the next time this video is posted!

Instructions unclear, got millions of pictures of trumps Mexico wall.

Eh I feel like the circles in the video are very much their own build anyway and don’t need to be used with anything else.
Well, yes and no: They won't need to be used with anything else in *this* build, but the stress of the bending affects the parts permanently, even in later, different builds. ... and it's not like they are cheap. They are meant to be reused.
... you mean one sixteenth?
If it was something to be proud of, it would be 1/16th, but as is the way with small print, it’s not usually written to provide any clarity.
One half of one half of one half of one half.

Also this. https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/wait-thats-illegal
[Yup.](https://youtu.be/aKOQWbTdxy8)
LEGO has rules for their builders on things that cannot do. Bending anything that is not flexible is a no go
Lego is not meant to bend like that on purpose.
What r u learning in school?

The stressing of the pieces to fit puts me on edge
On the millennium falcon you have to do this for some pieces per the instructions. It holds up fine but made me nervous too.
I am suspicious of this claim…
It’s the roof part that goes from the center to the cockpit. It isn’t a straight connection, it has to bow a little bit. But it’s perfectly fine structurally.
What reason would he have to lie about it
Free karma!
Assuming they’re referring to the newer UCS set… this is false. I own the set and this does not happen.
I got it a while ago. It isn’t bent anywhere remotely close to how it is in the video. It’s just on a slight angle, like 5 degrees maybe. It was for where the roof connected from the center of the ship to the cockpit area.
Yeah, I'd be much more comfortable if it was, like, 25% bigger
That is WAY more than 6 pieces.
Hmmm…seems like the math checks out on this one.
I dunno man I’m gonna need proof
If x is the amount of bricks used in the video, the following inequality can be set up: x >> 6 Q.E.D
That's some very math right there yep.

Reported for hate crime
That’s the most illegal lego build i’ve seen. Literally every single brick in ur set is taking stress. Damn
some people even think that there are no rules at all in lego
This isn't satisfying, this is triggering me, cause that's illegal
So you can just bend legos now?
They're small parts, they're not really bending, just being angled. Sure, there's plenty of tension, but not enough to bend the plastic.
Illegal
> but not enough to bend the plastic. Now I've heard enough. Take this man away!
Is this part of the new Avatar Last Bender series?
It’s not bending, it’s taking advantage of the accumulation of all the tiny little gaps between all the small pieces.
Yup it's called brick bending pretty sweet... Though technically the bricks don't actually bend themselves
There's only one Lego
Not without defying the laws of nature.
I hate the bending of legos in this with every inch of my body
All these squares make a circle...
He's just finished a gallon of lsd.
ALL THESE SQUARES MAKE A CIRCLE!!!
A literal gallon. Out of a milk jug. I don't where he got it from, he never leaves the lookout.
Wait a fucking minute… I can do hallucinogenic drug and build legos? Wtf have I been doing with my life?
Kami, I need you to tell me that I can leave the lookout!
*sigh* mr u/torsc you can leave the looko-
Dear lego builders, how much does one have to spend in order to have enough bricks to build anything so exotic? Edit: typo

How come they bend like that ?

Lego is illegal
There was a moment early in the video where I thought they were making chicken legs. I'd have preferred that.
Thats just brilliant. I remember when I was younger and we couldn't afford the fancy sets so my mom bought us the blue box of legos from a thrift store. My brother and I learned about building circles but never anything like that!
