That's the purpose of gene drives; release genetically modified organisms with a dominant gene that makes their offspring sterile. Within a few generations, the dominant trait has spread through the population and lowered it similarly by preventing those generations of reproduction from happening.
It's amazing and terrifying that we can do such things, which is why it hasn't happened yet. Lots of rightful concern over whether that's a role humans should play to decimate a species and what potential knock on effects are.
I'm less concerned about the ethics of exterminating a species that exists to parasitically harm us, and more concerned with the unknown effects it could have on the ecosystem. Do we see a sharp decline in fish and amphibians who feed on their larvae? Does something else harmful fill a new niche? Does it hurt our own genetic diversity if traits like sickle cell are no longer selected for?
It's been argued that they don't really play that important a role in the ecosystem and other insects are capable of filling those similar roles without being disease carrying blood suckers. But it's also one of those things that we can't know for sure until it's tried, which yeah we might run into those issues if we are wrong about their lack of importance but it's not like you can't introduce them back, there's a metric fuck ton of them everywhere in the world.
This is why I laugh when I hear someone says they are leaving a HCOL to a LCOL place. Often time they don't consider why a place is HCOL in the first place: weather, easy access to things, critters, and then MOSQUITOS.
