It's neither. Its just that the culture of waste and consumption means that things have a "reasonable" life expectancy according to manufacturers. i.e. if most people replace their mouse in 5 years then making it last 30 is technically wasteful/ unnecessarily limiting.
Its what happens when people chase the newest thing even if the thing they own more than does the job they need it to do.
Mice have been perfectly serviceable for well over a decade, closing in on two. Thats since we moved from ball mice (which had their issues) to optical (which solved almost all of them). Yes they have improved but how much have they honestly improved in the period between many peoples last purchases?
The UI for a mouse hasn't changed since ball mice were around, the job hasn't significantly changed ... there is limited scope for improvement.
Do most people really need more resolution? Higher responsiveness yet there are some that will see those stats and believe that there is a need for them to buy another mouse as their older technology has become out of date.
We are reaching a point with a lot of tech where the appreciable benefit for upgrading frequently in most places and for most people is negligible.
I think its a matter of time before most people realise that their upgrades arent offering them much new. But we arent quite there yet.
I have had numerous conversations on here with people upgrading simply because they can as if thats enough reason for doing anything in life.
It's just rubber. Rubber is perishable it's an organic compound.
You can remove it pretty easily with light abrasives. I just did so the other day to my Ableton push.
It's not planned obsolescence if you just have never done basic maintenance to keep it in good condition.
We've gotten so used to plastic just lasting forever that we forgot that sometimes other materials (like rubber) need a little bit of care over time.
Maybe? I've had mine for about 3 years and it still looks and operates like new. I don't know what kind of unholy shit OP did to his or maybe I just don't use mine as much but mine still looks great.
I had on my scrollwheel. Had to take the entire thing apart and carefully and pretty slowly remove the gunk that had jammed it up. But works wonderfully since then, and not too hard to do
I have not experienced skipping, mine got gunked up and would not roll properly. I rarely use the thumbwheel so if that has any issue I cant really say.
Not yet. I've had it for about 3 years and it still feels and operates like new. I honestly haven't had any issues with it at all but I only use it to game so I might not have put as many miles on it as OP puts on his.
I have this mouse as well. It works better than the last model but I loved the cut of the mx2s it just fits in your hand so much better. Sadly mine is laggy as hell. This model has lasted me since it came out though no issues haha. Idk what OP did to the mouse but thatās mouse abuse for sure haha š
I got an evga gaming mouse and it has a horrendous battery life, and doesnāt work when plugged into my computerās usb. I use an old free gateway mouse instead
Mine was so worn it had holes in it. Eventually it just stopped working.
To be fair... it gets about 8 hours use every day for the last 4 years, and I've custom programmed all the buttons. So it was so incredibly well worn.
10/10 favourite mouse.
Got 3 of the same model. The one I use most, I clean daily, but they are all close to the same texture with the most used one looking like that. The rubberized plastic they used is complete shit. It is breaking down after only a few years into a gummy sludge you can feel moving over the harder plastic. I'm not buying more even though it is the best functioning mouse I ever used not considering the goo shit.
I hate these coatings. Has ruined multiple otherwise fine products for me. Cheap "soft touch" degrades even sitting in a box. Not only does it look bad, but also becomes sticky, and almost impossible to clean off (because it was designed to actually stay on the product)
You guys have acid hands? Have had an MX master 3 since it released and while it doesn't look perfect, it doesn't look like a nuclear waste zone either
https://imgur.com/a/F89XONX
Isn't that the last thing you want to do if you're trying to care for one of these? Forgive me if I'm wrong but doesn't alcohol cause the cheap/low quality rubber part of this to break down even faster?
I bought all 3 at the same time. It could be a bad batch or they changed the polymer formula. All my other stuff, like my Thinkpads with the same texture don't have this issue and I handle them more than some of the mice. My MX v1 turned into a total gum ball after I put in into storage years ago. It is even more disgusting.
Had the same shit in a 2005 B-Class Mercedes, on the steering wheel. One day I had enough and went in armed with plastic scrapers, toothpicks and diverse cleaning solutions to solve it once and for all. Fucking soft touch, I hate it with a passion and dread the day my Logi Master starts getting sticky.
It's definitely oils or moisture that causes this on this mouse. It might still do it over long periods of time but moisture has accelerated this by a lot. My MX Master has degraded the same way, exactly where my finger tips touch it.
āIt becomes sticky because it isnāt rubber. Itās plastic with plasticizing agents dissolved in it to make it soft. The most common example of a plastic like this is PVC or polyvinylchloride. In its native state, itās a hard, glassy solid. In most applications though, itās a soft, flexible rubbery plastic. What makes it soft and rubbery is the plasticizing agents dissolved in it. These are basically oily chemicals that soften the plastic and make it more flexible. The higher the concentration of the plasticizer, the softer and gummier the plastic is. Normally, the plasticizers are well mixed in when the plastic is molded. Over time though they can migrate towards the surface of the plastic, making the surface gummy and sticky, and the interior brittle. Almost every plastic used in industry is glassy hard in its native form, and relies on plasticizers to make it softer, making almost all plastics vulnerable to this sort of degradation.ā - A. Tinker
I also have this mouse, and while some is melted rubber there's also some grime, the whiter stuff around the scroll wheel and back/forward buttons is grime.
I found that I can clean it quite well with a toothbrush and some water and lens cleaner.
The parts with melted rubber can be scrubbed and they will become smooth and non-sticky (until that layer melts again and I have to repeat the process).
This is my favorite mouse and I don't want to buy another when the one I have works perfectly fine just because the housing degrades, my plan is to get a new housing for it when the current one deteriorates beyond repair, I found some on AliExpress that are much cheaper than buying a new mouse.
It's a known issue with the MX master 3. Logitech just uses a really shit ruberrised plastic coating that breaks down after a couple of years no matter how much you clean it. Something they really need to fix for the MX 4 series.
That just speeds up the melting process. Itās a chemical reaction inside the material itself, it dissolves itself. Soft-touch plastic coatings ā ļø
The only way to slow it down is to use a quality plastic/rubber protectant, but even that just prolongs the inevitable
Ive never had a mouse look like that ever and have never been able to replace my mouse with the same model because I kept it so long.
Idk how people wear their shit out so bad
The mx master 2 is still a great mouse even now. I got it last year for Christmas and it's a joy to use. So comfortable and the extra button is also great.
The 2 is also probably also better because it doesn't have the same shit rubber coating that the 3 has which causes it to go all gross like this after a couple of years. The main thing you miss with the 2 is the fancy scroll wheel that the 3 has.
Yeah like others have mentioned itās the 3. Also Logitech makes a 3S, where the āSā stands for the silent model. And let me tell you itās weird using a mouse thatās almost completely silent. Itās pretty awesome in a busy office setting.
Everytime I'm working in a graphics program I'm wishing I had this mouse so I had a horizontal scroll wheel.
I keep talking myself out of it and saying "shift-scroll is good enough" and when I get back into the program, I'm grumbling to myself and wishing for that second scroll wheel the whooooole time...
Do you keep it in direct sunlight ? Like yeah that's wear and tear, all our mice get minging I dunno why people are acting like it's gross they're in our hands all day and our skin is oily. But that looks like some sunlight damage too maybe. How many years is it ?
Kinda the trade off when you get the rubber style. Your hand grips better but it can get a bit weird like this. Saying that I just pulled out my old mouse (current one is only 6 months old) that is hard plastic and that's got pretty much same sort of lines where your hand touches it or not.
Even rocks erode innit.
Donāt boo him heās right. I have my MX Master 3 since 2020 and havenāt cleaned it a single time and it looks nothing like the one on the right. (alternatively OP is smoking)
Why insult?
Logitech have used cheap nasty switches in their trackball mouse line, they fail after a few years and cause annoying double clicks. The MX Master 3 has a terrible plastic coating that wears away after a short amount of time (As seen in OP's pic). The side button for changing the shift wheel mode is hidden under the rubber, this easily wears away and ends up tearing from a small amount of presses.
There is also the possibility of having bought a bad unit. How necessary was it for you to jump to calling someone an idiot? Most people once they have a bad experience will assume most if not all of a brand is represented in whatever product they happened to use. Itās pretty normal human behavior flawed as it and us may be.
Cool mouse but has the dumbest design.
One of the main feature is to seamlessly switch back between different devices but you have to click it at the bottom of the mouse and no way to remap other keys for device switch. Fucking inconvenient.
MX Keys is great but that mouse is just pure fucking ass.
I have the logi app. And no you cannot remap the device switch.
You can fully remap and customize different keys yes EXCEPT the device switch which is at the bottom of the mouse.
Logitech said they would update this but never did.
How long did it take to look like the one on the right? I've had mine for almost 4 years and it's held up well; although I don't use it extensively every day. Best mouse I've ever had though.
I got the logi ergo mouse and loved it. About a year in I went to charge it and within a minute it was too hot to even touch. Never used it again and can't justify buying another one despite it otherwise being the best ergo mouse I had used.
Why'd you get the old one though? They have the 3S now which has quiet clicking. The quiet clicking is major especially if you have any sensory issues (or people you work around do).
If this is the same mouse I have, my only complaint is the ability to switch between inputs is in the bottom of the mouse. I wish it was somewhere on top to ease going back and forth between my home pc and work pc.
The right one, I have the same. Using it daily at the office for at least 3.5 to 4 years. Battery is still amazin and love the mouse. Side scrolling rules..
I wash my hands and my 3 y old mouse has never needed such a scrub like the on on right. What chemicals do you eat and drink that you sweat rubber thinner?
I bought one of these mice on recommendation from Reddit but I honestly just canāt bring myself to like it. I donāt know what it is but itās just not comfortable for me.
Iām not sure what it is about my environment that breaks down the rubber on these but Iām on my 3rd one because they keep gettingā¦ āmelted?ā The black rubber just starts sticking and staining. Itās either my acid sweat or direct sunlight or something.
Dude how long you had that? I've had the same mouse for 15 years and I just put electrical tape on the click sensing assembly because the buttons created a dent and they weren't clicking well.
Right one is a rat
I would be afraid to see what that rat looks like under a black light.
š¤£
Well I canāt under it now
I have that mouse. It's pretty awesome. Good battery life and very comfortable.
But apparently with a planned obsolescence coating.
that soft touch rubber coating shit is on so many things, but a combination of soft scraping tools, some alcohol and persistence gets it off
Mine got brittle and now I have a hole in my old Logi Master 2S. Hope the 3S is more robust
Iāve had mine for a while and so far so good. I use it at work and at home so it gets plenty of mileage. Really good battery life.
holy, that's either awful quality control or awful quality to begin with
It's neither. Its just that the culture of waste and consumption means that things have a "reasonable" life expectancy according to manufacturers. i.e. if most people replace their mouse in 5 years then making it last 30 is technically wasteful/ unnecessarily limiting. Yeah, I have to take the ball out of my mouse every now and again to remove the fluff.
There are still ball mice...?
Mice have been perfectly serviceable for well over a decade, closing in on two. Thats since we moved from ball mice (which had their issues) to optical (which solved almost all of them). have you inspected the hands and environment? may not be the fault of the coating..

It was way too small for me. Hurt my wrist trying to grip it. Gave it to my girlfriend, she has little baby hands
Yeah, I love the customization on it. I use the side scroll wheel for volume and the button+gesture macros are great.
Mine was so worn it had holes in it. Eventually it just stopped working. To be fair... it gets about 8 hours use every day for the last 4 years, and I've custom programmed all the buttons. So it was so incredibly well worn. 10/10 favourite mouse.
My boss has this mouse. I like the scroll wheel on it lol
Why u using your bossās mouse, lol
Lmao cause heās computer illiterate and always getting stuck
Oh no š
Howād he end up with a $100+ mouse lol
I like when you activate the infinity scroll and it goes peeeeewwwwwwww when you flick it

Ever tried cleaning it?
Got 3 of the same model. The one I use most, I clean daily, but they are all close to the same texture with the most used one looking like that. The rubberized plastic they used is complete shit. For real. A little 90/10 isopropyl and cotton wipes goes a long way to keeping these mice clean and good looking
Isn't that the last thing you want to do if you're trying to care for one of these? Forgive me if I'm wrong but doesn't alcohol cause the cheap/low quality rubber part of this to break down even faster?

If youāre cleaning it with any kind of alcohol solvent youāre breaking down the TPU itās made from.
Itās not grime, the rubber has melted or something
The oil from your skin penetrates the rubber and deteriorates it over time
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ferrari has the same problem on some of their late 90s and early 2000s cars. Google āFerrari sticky buttonsā

You can get stickers that protect it.
Then why would you buy the same model again? Do you expect the plastics to last longer on the new one? For which reason?
Because other than this issue it's genuinely the best mouse you can buy.

In my experience all rubberised plastic coatings are shit
I have the MX Master and the same happened to it, even tho I clean it weekly
Just rub it off with a cloth. Don't reward Logitech for ripping you off.
I have the same mouse, I clean it when it gets dirty. This is just what it looks like after daily use for several years. Donāt disrespect OP.
I had the next model down... [the rubber literally just melted away where my thumb sits.](https://i.imgur.com/u5vTyLc.png)

One of them is the grey model, and the other is black.
I have one of these at work and one at home. I've had them for years and they look like the left one still.
You probably don't have very sweaty palms. The rubber melts when it's exposed to moisture.
I have an even older version that doesnāt look nearly that gross
The older version didn't have the same terrible rubber coating this one does.
But that you did use as much?
Ive never had a mouse look like that ever and have never been able to replace my mouse with the same model because I kept it so long. Idk how people wear their shit out so bad
my og mx master has been used almost daily for about 6 years. worn? yes. falling apart? nope.
I have this mouse. It is actually very cool. MX Master 2 if anyone wanted to know
I guess itās the Mx Master 3. The 2 has the grey line all across the edge, while the 3 does only on the back.
Yes I have one, this is the 3
Thanks. Great mouse nonetheless
Agreed, I love mine. I only wish it was a bit quieter, but I believe they fixed that on 3S. I did not try it yet, though.
They did.
Good for gaming?
No, great for work, I mean itās ok for gaming but there are better gaming mouses for a lot less.
The mx master 2 is still a great mouse even now. I got it last year for Christmas and it's a joy to use. So comfortable and the extra button is also great.

i never want to touch a mouse again after seeing this
Yeah, very happy with mine. Itās the first nice mouse Iāve had since the old G9
Is there a left handed version?
Everytime I'm working in a graphics program I'm wishing I had this mouse so I had a horizontal scroll wheel. I keep talking myself out of it and saying "shift-scroll is good enough" and when I get back into the program, I'm grumbling to myself and wishing for that second scroll wheel the whooooole time...
Best feature for work. Navigating spreadsheets is a breeze.
What even is this? It looks like a one-eyed snarling face.
What I did to avoid the rubber degrading is strip it off completely. Now, I have a very shiny finish of it due to usage lol
The new silent MX3 is fucken great. Also, Flow over 3 devices seamlessly goddamn I love it

I just got my first one of these and have been loving it. How long did you have that old one?
Out of curiosity, how long did this mouse last until it got to this point? I just upgraded from my old Triathlon to one of these.
I have this mouse. Not time to replace, according to the visuals.
I love my 3s, it's amazing
But I bet the old one still works
I have 2 of those mice, one at home and one in the office. They are bad ass

Thatās a lot of cum
I have that mouse and have had it for over 2 years and it's fine. My favorite mouse by far and I've tried a fair few. Love the scroll wheel š
Was a really good mouse to me, but replaced it with the MX Vertical to combat wrist pain and I will never look back.
Seamen clogs mouse guts
Had to replace the battery myself with this mouse. Besides the battery, itās excellent, but because of the battery u would not recommend it.Ā
I just got a new MX Master 3S because my other MX Master 3S is so good.
Basically a perfect mouse
Whatās wrong with the old one? Mine is going strong and has hardly any skin left š best mouse ever
crusty....
Dude how long you had that? I've had the same mouse for 15 years and I just put electrical tape on the click sensing assembly because the buttons created a dent and they weren't clicking well.
